In 1914 at the Battle of Tanga, the Indian troops performed badly because of inadequate training and hardware. After Tanga, mainly dispersed small actions rather than decisive great battles characterized the campaign in East Africa. Sporadic small-unit actions resulted in mostly battalion-size engagements, rather than mass infantry armies colliding with each other within a confined space as in France. Bush fighting required skirmishing, sniping, ambush, reconnaissance patrol, and so on—tactical forms in which the Indian infantry, who were veterans of North-West Frontier fighting, were well acquainted. However, ‘raw’ sepoys required some time to adopt this specialized form of combat technique. From mid-1917 onwards, material superiority and adoption of proper techniques of bush warfare by the British and Indian troops enabled them to keep the Germans on the run.

An investigation has been made into the distribution and bionomics of Ornithodoros moubata (Murr.) in East Africa in relation to the incidence of relapsing fever, and a survey has been made of the infestation in over 4,600 African huts, together with the temperature and relative humidity conditions.In Kenya Colony, relapsing fever is endemic in the high rainfall areas of Meru, Nyeri and Taita Districts. These habitats are cool and wet with a mean microhabitat temperature of 71°F. and a relative humidity of 86 per cent. Tick infestations were relatively sparse and were rare in the hot and dry climate of Embu District, the base of the Taita Hills and generally over all such country in Kenya.In Tanganyika Territory, relapsing fever is widespread, and the most striking difference was the relatively much greater abundance of the tick, especially in the dry central areas. It is pointed out that although relapsing fever is most prevalent in the north-west, endemicity is at a lower level than in Kenya, and decreases towards the south-east, indicating that the degree of incidence of the disease does not conform with that of the vector.In the Digo District, south of Mombasa on the Kenya coast, ticks showed a reversal in their choice of microclimate from those in the cool highlands and were numerous in hot, moist conditions. The incidence of the disease was very low.O. moubata was widespread in the Usambara Mountain area of Tanganyika. Ticks were most numerous in the cool, wet conditions above 4,000 ft., but were also abundant in the hot, moist foothills and plains, whereas they were absent in hot and dry country at the base of the Taita Hills in Kenya 80 miles to the north.As humidity appeared to be a foremost factor affecting the distribution of O. moubata it was not possible to evaluate clearly the effects of temperature. It is suggested that all the conflicting evidence of the relationship of the tick populations to microclimate and the incidence of relapsing fever may be explained only by introducing a hypothesis of biological variation in the tick itself. It is shown that there are two peaks of greatest abundance, at relative humidities of 86 and 67 to 68 per cent. respectively, and it is suggested that these two peaks represent the distribution of two hypothetical hut-haunting biological forms.An examination of the blood-meals from pooled catches by the precipitin test showed that in the cool and wet habitats of the Kenya highlands and the north-west of Tanganyika, 94 per cent. of the recognisable feeds were on man and only 2 per cent. on fowls. In the hot and moist habitats of Digo and the low-lying area between Digo and the Usambara Mountains, 18 per cent. were on man and 78 per cent. on fowl. In the mainly warm and moist habitats of the Usambara Mountains and the area bordering the south-east of Lake Victoria, 73 per cent. were on man and 22 per cent. on fowls.It is therefore suggested that there are two biological forms of O. moubata found in huts, one feeding on man and the other feeding on fowls. The former is found in huts at high altitudes in areas having a cool and wet climate; it is essentially a human parasite showing a marked preference for the blood of man while ignoring the presence of fowls however numerous or available. It occurs in greatest abundance at a relative humidity of about 86 per cent. It is found at relatively low temperatures from 67° to 75°F. It is absent in areas where the microclimate is consistently over 90 per cent. R.H. and may not occur where it is consistently lower than about 74 per cent.The form that feeds on fowls appears to possess a tolerance to a wide range of temperature and R.H., occurring in greatest abundance at 67 to 68 per cent. R.H. It is found at temperatures from 68° to 87°F. It is more resistant to starvation than the form that feeds on man.

The kingdom of Buganda, which extends over some seventeen thousand square miles of very fertile country to the north-west of Lake Victoria, was the original nucleus of the British Protectorate to which it has given its name. It was, indeed, the first firm base which the British possessed in the interior of East Africa, and it provided the model, and to a large extent the personnel, for the administration of the surrounding areas. Buganda was also the first part of as East Africa in which Christian teaching took root, and the centre from which Christian beliefs were diffused among a wide range of heathen tribes. The Baganda were the first people in the region to become literate, and the first to take part, with any degree of willingness and success, in the cultivation of exportable crops.

After recovery from his alarming accident at Bagamoyo at the end of 1889, Emin Pasha decided to enter the German service in East Africa. At the beginning of 1890 he was appointed the leader of an expedition into the interior of the continent. Part of Emin's instructions read as follows:In accordance with instructions received by me from the Imperial Chancellor, and the arrangement made with Your Excellency, I have the honour to give you the following directions with regard to the mission undertaken by you:(I) Your Excellency is to secure on behalf of Germany the territories situated south of and along the Victoria Nyanza Lake, from Kavirondo and the countries between Victoria Nyanza and Tanganyika up to the Muta Nzige and Albert Nyanza, so as to frustrate England's attempts at gaining an influence. I consider that the extension of the line from Kilimanjaro and the Kavirondo Bay to the north west, up to the frontier of the Congo State, constitutes the Anglo-German frontier. Any extension warranted by the circumstances of the sphere of influence just described would be regarded by me as redounding to Your Excellency's special merit.

Recent archaeological research conducted west of Lake Turkana, Kenya has shed new light on the prehistory of eastern Cushitic and Nilotic speakers in East Africa. The Namoratunga cemetery and rock art sites, dated to about 300 B.C., are clearly related to the prehistory of Eastern Cushitic speakers. The newly defined Turkwell cultural tradition, dated to the first millenniuma.d., is associated with eastern Nilotic prehistory. Lopoy, a large lakeside fishing and pastoralist settlement, is discussed in terms of eastern Nilotic prehistory. The archaeological data agrees with the independent findings of historical linguistics.

The Dampier Sub-basin shows many faults oblique to the basin axis. Previous explanations for this range from syn-rift transfer systems through to deep seated wrenching.Multiple rift episodes, with differing stress directions, occur in the area's history, each utilising the pre-existing fault patterns. As basement is difficult to interpret beneath thick sedimentary cover, the initial architecture is interpreted from the tectonic setting.The sub-basin lies adjacent to the Archean Pilbara Craton, a stable crustal block surrounded by ancient mobile belts. The East Africa rift system has also formed in a Craton margin setting. In East Africa earthquake data and detailed seismic interpretation show the rift utilises faults within the mobile belt systems.In the Dampier area, the three different extension vectors combined with the pre-rift fabric and the East Africa analogue, are used to build an alternate model for the basin genesis. Permo-Carboniferous extension sets up a rift system partitioned by the Precambrian fabric. Jurassic extension reactivates these faults but with oblique slip and dip slip movement caused by the new extension direction. This oblique slip causes complex branching arrays of new faults within the cover section. A third extension vector in the Cretaceous subsequently modifies the fabric. The Dampier Sub-basin is seen as a complex failed rift utilising a Precambrian tectonic fabric. The structural inheritance of the pre-rift fabric by each rift episode has affected the geometry of hydrocarbon-bearing structures of the sub-basin.

A transplantable carcinoma was established in North West Sprague Dawley (NWSD) rats by use of X-irradiation by Engle and Spencer. The tumor was passaged through 63 generations over a period of 32 months. The original tumor, an adenocarcinoma, changed into an undifferentiated carcinoma following the 19th transplant. The tumor grew well in NWSD rats of either sex at various ages. It was invariably fatal, causing death of the host within 15 to 35 days following transplantation.Tumor, thymus, spleen, and plasma from 7 rats receiving transplants of tumor at 3 to 9 weeks of age were examined with an electron microscope at intervals of 8, 15, 22 and 30 days after transplantation. Four normal control rats of the same age were also examined. The tissues were fixed in glutaraldehyde, postfixed in osmium tetroxide and embedded in Epon. The plasma was separated from heparanized blood and processed as previously described for the tissue specimens. Sections were stained with uranyl acetate followed by lead citrate and examined with an RCA EMU-3G electron microscope.

Structure information of high precision can be extracted from intentsity details in convergent beam patterns like the one reproduced in Fig 1. From low order reflections for small unit cell crystals,bonding charges, ionicities and atomic parameters can be derived, (Zuo, Spence and O’Keefe, 1988; Zuo, Spence and Høier 1989; Gjønnes, Matsuhata and Taftø, 1989) , but extension to larger unit cell ma seem difficult. The disks must then be reduced in order to avoid overlap calculations will become more complex and intensity features often less distinct Several avenues may be then explored: increased computational effort in order to handle the necessary many-parameter dynamical calculations; use of zone axis intensities at symmetry positions within the CBED disks, as in Figure 2 measurement of integrated intensity across K-line segments. In the last case measurable quantities which are well defined also from a theoretical viewpoint can be related to a two-beam like expression for the intensity profile:With as an effective Fourier potential equated to a gap at the dispersion surface, this intensity can be integrated across the line, with kinematical and dynamical limits proportional to and at low and high thickness respctively (Blackman, 1939).

The electron microscope has evolved to the level where it is now straightforward to record highresolution images from thin samples (t∼10 to 20nm) that are directly interpretable in terms of atomic arrangements. Whilst recorded images necessarily represent two-dimensional projections of the structure, many defects such as dislocations and interfaces may be linear or planar in nature and thus might be expected to be amenable to detailed characterization. In this review, we briefly consider the recent significant progress that has been made in quantitative defect analysis using the high-resolution electron microscope and then discuss some drawbacks to the technique as well as potential scope for further improvements. Surveys of defect modelling for some small-unit-cell materials and interfaces have recently been published, and reference should be made to other papers in this symposium for further examples.The technique of structure imaging originated in the early '70s with observations of large-unit-cell block oxides.

Oreochromis mossambicus is currently receiving much attention as a candidater species for aquaculture programs within Southern Africa. This has stimulated interest in its breeding cycle as well as the morphological characteristics of the gonads. Limited information is available on SEM and TEM observations of the male gonads. It is known that the testis of O. mossambicus is a paired, intra-abdominal structure of the lobular type, although further details of its characteristics are not known. Current investigations have shown that spermatids reach full maturity some two months after the female becomes gravid. Throughout the year, the testes contain spermatids at various stages of development although spermiogenesis appears to be maximal during November when spawning occurs. This paper describes the morphological and ultrastructural characteristics of the testes and spermatids.Specimens of this fish were collected at Syferkuil Dam, 8 km north- west of the University of the North over a twelve month period, sacrificed and the testes excised.
