This article examines four questions that address the issue of music's perceived role in the process of education. These questions are: Why should music be part of the education of all children? What is the role of music in personal/educational development? How do the goals of music education align with those of general education? How can we justify the role of music in education in ways others understand? The article first considers the two assumptions underlying the argument for making music part of child education: that music contributes something unique and essential to human life, and this “something” cannot be achieved without formal instruction. It then explores the distinctions between education and training, the difference between educating in and educating through music, and whether formal schooling is itself educational. It also discusses advocacy as a strategy used by music educators to persuade others of the importance and integrity of current practices and argues that music education must be as concerned with changing itself as it is with winning the support of others.

Juvenile firesetting and bomb making (JFSB) represents an important international issue in several disciplines (e.g., education, law enforcement, fire service, social services, and clinical forensic psychology). An examination of policies, laws, and attitudes revolving around JFSB behaviors, reveals startling knowledge gaps that create significant detrimental impacts on public safety. These same concerns reinforce the primacy of broad general education and training for psychologists in this area. This article reviews critical training factors with respect to JFSB that should be included in the training of all psychologists working with youth, public safety, and community mental health and exposing trainees to interdisciplinary experiences that are vital to provision of clinical forensic services needed in these cases. One section speaks to the educational relevance of developing diagnostic (DSM-5 Quadrant) and culturally responsive intervention skills. Additionally, this article discusses the role of practicums and advanced practicums, through which exposure to the many clinical forensic contours of JFSB cases, function as a proficient training platform. Finally, the article draws conclusions and offers future directions for education and training.

I took office as Chair of the United Kingdom Council for Music Education and Training at what I hope will be viewed in later years as one of the most significant times of change in the history of music education in this country. I express this in terms of hope since I am sincere in my wish that music educators should not have to adapt to and survive such radical changes again in the foreseeable future. Time will tell.

This article analyzes representations of modern youth about social success, the factors of social success and the role of socio-pedagogical support in the development of the social success of young people; on the correlation of age and success, success and support; about the impact of social success on the level of human life; about the readiness of youth to accompany other people. The sample size was one hundred and twenty young people between the ages of fourteen and thirty who are studying in General education organizations, professional educational organizations, and educational organizations of higher education in the Yaroslavl region. To study the social perceptions of modern young people, the author's questionnaire was used, and to control the results, individual conversations and the method of focus groups were used. The survey was conducted in writing on an individual basis, indirectly, using the Internet service "Google forms". The link to the survey was posted on the public pages of educational and public organizations in the social network "in contact". Differences are shown in the content of social representations of success as a socio-psychological phenomenon, and in their interpretation by the study participants. It is established that socially successful young people tend to perceive success not only as a result of their own actions, but also as a result of support by family members or teachers, while their peers who consider themselves unsuccessful tend to exaggerate the role of circumstances, including support, in the development of their own social success. Indicators of the presence of socio-pedagogical support in the life of people who are socially successful are higher in percentage than those who are unsuccessful. Most of the study participants note that the most effective development of social success of young people occurs in the conditions of accompanying this process.

This chapter addresses what might appear to be disparate themes: evaluation as ranking; ongoing colonial processes that in order to maintain their force are dependent on an internalization of hierarchies of who counts as human; and structures of formal schooling as processes of subjectification that produce docile, obedient subjects. The intention is to generate “thoughts of the outside” by taking seriously the rejection of evaluation practices and associated priorities of authorized schooling by young people pursuing music learning in “abject spaces.” These young people, often labeled as “at risk” within the school system, not only reject the label but also reject the role of schooling in preparing them to become part of dominant social, political, and economic structures that they experience as hostile and oppressive. By exploring the fault lines made visible by looking from the outside at existing dominant educational frameworks, the chapter seeks to highlight structural relations of power that are not as easily seen from within dominant locations. Specifically, it illustrates how the large amount of mental space taken up with the discipline of ranking can constrain imaginative possibilities, leave learners with a potential lack of resilience when notions of the self are tied to external validation, keep them focused on obedience to existing systems, and keep them engrossed in individual accomplishments and therefore less likely to notice contradictions between claimed conditions of equality and actual material conditions for differently situated populations.

This chapter acknowledges the growth of jazz ensembles in instrumental music education and the value of preparing future music educators to teach jazz. It situates jazz pedagogy in an authentic, experiential framework, emphasizing the important role of the rhythm section and what it means to be culturally literate through improvisation. Topics such as jazz theory, swing feel, and jazz styles are examined. The chapter also discusses a paradigm shift in the conceptualization of music education, whereby an interpreter-performer perspective is replaced by a creator-performer perspective. Musicians’ roles as composers and improvisers in the jazz idiom suggest learning this art form is relevant for developing creative performers who may then be able to participate in a variety of other musical cultures.

To avoid cultural appropriation, music educators need to take the time to explore the source culture and approach the traditions of others in a respectful manner so the people and musics studied are neither demeaned nor exploited. Students can be part of this exploration and share what they learn from their research with the class.

Arts and culture teachers often are ill-equipped to meet the requirements of school music programmes. They labour especially to accommodate the diverse musical preferences of learners. This discussion accordingly describes the implementation of a once-off rap programme at an inner-city secondary school in Pretoria. It shows the programme evolving fitfully into a remarkably effective synergy between a teacher (trained as a church organist), the formal schooling system, school learners as well as community musicians. However, this synergy was dependent on the teacher relinquishing her cultural and musical preferences in favour of a popular music programme linked to the social experiences of learners. The successful unfolding of this programme demanded that the teacher surrender the conventional status of omniscient, authoritative educator in accordance with the principles of learner-centered approaches. The role of the teacher consequently became that of project coordinator and facilitator, while the needs, goals and actions of learners were central to, and motivated experiential and reflective group learning. Learners applied theoretical knowledge in musical creation and performance, continuously assessed their progress, and redefined their objectives as required. The consequent development by them of a combination of communicative, cognitive, emotional and social skills reveals the value in music education of oral processes of learning, as well as the role of community musicians. It also underscores the value of the school as formal setting of social interaction and education, as well as the indispensable – if redefined – role of the educator.
