Asymptomatic low-density Plasmodium infection during non-transmission season: a community-based cross-sectional study in two districts of North Eastern Region, India

Abstract Background Malaria elimination requires targeting asymptomatic and low-density Plasmodium infections that largely remain undetected. Therefore we conducted a cross-sectional study to estimate the burden of asymptomatic and low-density Plasmodium infection using conventional and molecular diagnostics. Methods A total of 9118 participants, irrespective of age and sex, were screened for malaria using rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), microscopy and polymerase chain reaction. Results Among the participants, 707 presented with symptoms and 8411 without symptoms, of which Plasmodium was present in 15.6% (110/707) and 8.1% (681/8411), respectively. Low-density infection was found in 5.1% (145/2818) of participants and 8327 of 9118 were Plasmodium negative. Endemicity was propotional to asymptomatic infections (high endemicity 11.1% [404/3633] vs low endemicity 5.8% [277/4778]; odds ratio [OR] 2.0 [95% confidence interval {CI} 1.7 to 2.4]) but inversely related to low-density infection (high endemicity 3.7% [57/1545] vs low endemicity 6.9% [88/1273]; OR 1.9 [95% CI 1.4 to 2.7]). The spleen rate in children 2–9 y of age was 17.9% (602/3368) and the enlarged spleen index was 1.6. Children between 8 and 14 y showed higher odds for asymptomatic (adjusted OR [aOR] 1.75 [95% CI 1.4 to 2.2]) and low-density infections (aOR 0.63 [95% CI 0.4 to 1.0)] than adults. Conclusions The prevalence of asymptomatic and low-density Plasmodium infection undermines the usefulness of standard diagnostic tools used by health agencies. This necessitates deploying molecular tools in areas where malaria microscopy/RDTs indicate a dearth of infection.

A cross sectional study was conducted to estimate the prevalence and identify possible risk factors (season, sex) of Schistosoma in three north-eastern districts of Bangladesh namely Mymensingh, Sunamganj, Kishoreganj. Mesenteric sample of cattle from different slaughter houses were collected and examined for helminths which were identified as Schistosoma on accordance with Soulbsy, 1965. Total 67 (55.83%) out of 120 randomly selected samples were found positive for schistosomiasis. Cattle of Kishoreganj were mostly infected (67.50%), followed by Sunamganj (55.00%) and Mymensingh (45.00%). Regarding seasonal prevalence, samples collected during winter (63.33%) were more infected than summer (48.33%). Moreover, 58.69% of male and 46.42% of female were found infected. In conclusion, relatively high prevalence was recorded in the study areas based on the results obtained. Hence, control measures against schistosomiasis must be designed. Res. Agric., Livest. BACKGROUND Hypothyroidism is the second most common endocrinopathy next to diabetes mellitus (DM). Hypothyroidism is associated with increased cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. Cardiovascular complications are some of the most profound, reproducible and reversible clinical findings associated with thyroid disease1 . Hence this study was undertaken to assess the cardiac dysfunction among patients with hypothyroidism by electrocardiogram (ECG) and echocardiogram (ECHO) so as to provide a proper treatment guideline even among milder cases. METHODS This was a cross sectional study carried among 50 new patients of hypothyroidism who presented to Navodaya Hospital, Raichur during 2015 to 2017. They were clinically evaluated and underwent relevant investigations, including thyroid profile estimation, cardiac evaluation using ECG and 2D ECHO. RESULTS Most cases fell in the age group of 31 - 40 years. There was an overall female preponderance (76 %) over all age groups with mean age of 42.02 years. Goiter was found in 8 % of patients, bradycardia and hypertension was seen in 30 % and 22 % respectively. Central nervous system (CNS) examination revealed delayed ankle jerk in 40 % followed by hoarseness of voice in 38 % of patients. Lipid analysis showed increase of total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), triglycerides (TGL) and decrease of highdensity lipoprotein (HDL). Normal ECG was found in 26 % of patients. Bradycardia was most common finding seen in 30 % (15) of patients. 24 % (12) of patients exhibited low voltage complexes. While, 46 % cases showed normal ECHO findings. 24 % of cases presented with pericardial effusion. 18 % cases presented with diastolic dysfunction among which majority were mild. None of the cases had severe diastolic dysfunction. Only a meagre 10 % cases showed intraventricular septum (IVS) thickness. CONCLUSIONS Pericardial effusion was seen among 24 % of patients while diastolic dysfunction was seen in 18 % patients. Abstract Background The current study aims to know the prevalence, effects and types of bullying at primary schools of Riyadh city for both male and female. Methods Male and female students at primary schools in Riyadh city are targeted using Cross-sectional study method. 517 students are included in this study 55.3% are female and 44.7% are male. Riyadh primary schools were divided into five groups according to geographic region North, South, East, West and Middle. The surveys were conducted after the approval of school's principals. In order to get an accurate response, the survey was distributed to student in classrooms in papers. Results 517 students participated in the study. Out of four regions the proportion from the Southern region were the highest at 187 (36.2%). The levels of bullying and victimization was low. Compared to female students, male students showed statistically significant higher bullying and victimization rates. Compared to the five regions in Riyadh city the bullying and victimization rate is highest in the Eastern region, and lower in the southern region. Conclusion The study shows that the levels of bullying and victimization at Riyadh's primary schools was low. Furthermore, research studies about bullying and victimization prevalence rates are not enough and need more researches to improve the intervention and prevent the side effect of it.
