The relationship between inoculum density of Verticillium dahliae in soil and disease development was studied in 10 commercial artichoke fields. Inoculum density of V. dahliae varied between 2.2 and 34.2 microsclerotia (ms) g–1 of soil near planting. Artichoke plants were monitored for disease at the beginning and the end of each growing season. There was a significant correlation, which was best described by negative exponential models, between inoculum density and disease incidence, symptom severity, and recovery of the pathogen from the plants. Inoculum densities ranging from 5 to 9 ms g–1 of soil were associated with a mean percentage of infected plants of about 50%. Additionally, three fields were monitored in two consecutive growing seasons to evaluate the population dynamics of V. dahliae microsclerotia in soil and disease development. Numbers of microsclerotia per gram of soil decreased significantly by the end of the first growing season but slightly increased at the end of the second growing season. In these fields, symptom severity was greatest during the second growing season when high percentages of infected plants also were recorded.

The relationship between inoculum density (number of microsclerotia per gram of air-dried soil) of Verticillium dahliae at the time of planting and the severity and incidence of root discoloration of horseradish at harvest was investigated in a 2-year study conducted in the greenhouse, microplots, and commercial production fields. The objective of the study was to develop a disease-forecast system that would assist growers in assessing the risk of the disease before planting horseradish in a particular field. Significant correlations were observed between inoculum density and severity and incidence of root discoloration in the greenhouse and microplots, although the form of the relationship varied with trials from linear to quadratic and negative exponential. No correlation was found between inoculum density of V. dahliae and severity and incidence of root discoloration in commercial production fields. In some fields with low inoculum densities, high ratings of severity and incidence of root discoloration were observed even with the partially resistant cultivar 769A. Conversely, in other fields with high inoculum densities, low ratings of severity and incidence of discolored roots were observed even with the susceptible cultivar 647A. These results suggest that a disease-forecast system based solely on inoculum densities of V. dahliae would be unreliable under field conditions when the other factors affecting the inoculum density-disease relationships cannot be controlled. Knowing the amount of initial inoculum may, however, save growers from planting horseradish in highly infested fields, but it would not guarantee a disease-free crop in fields with low levels of infestation.

The relationship between pre-flowering climatic conditions and sugary disease incidence was quantified in grain and forage sorghum genotypes at two sowing periods (mid November and mid December). The trials were carried out over the 2001/02 and 2002/03 growing seasons, in Lages, Santa Catarina State. Four commercial male-fertile sorghum hybrids (BR 600-forrage, BR 700-grain, BR 701-forage/silage and BR 800-forage) and one male-sterile inbred line (BR 001-A) were evaluated. When each genotype reached the flowering stage, 50 panicles were marked and sprayed with a suspension of Claviceps africana (1,000 spores mL-1). Air temperature, humidity and rainfall were recorded through out the growing cycle. Low temperatures three to four weeks prior to flowering, increased susceptibility. At both sowing periods, average night temperatures lower than 15°C during the critical period of pre-flowering turned the fertile hybrids as susceptible as the male-sterile inbred to ergot infection. The tested hybrids differed in their ability to tolerate pre-flowering cold stress. Seed set in uninoculated heads under pollination bags was also reduced, suggesting that increased susceptibility to sugary disease was the result of low temperature induced sterility.

An experiment was conducted in microplots which were artificially infested with a defoliating isolate of Verticillium dahliae using seven different treatments of inoculum densities ranging from 0 to 10 microsclerotia per gram of soil (ppg). The experiment was conducted in Andalucía (southern Spain), and the susceptible Spanish olive cv. Picual was used to determine the relationship between pathogen inoculum density and the progress of Verticillium wilt of olive (VWO). The inoculum, produced on a sodium pectate cellophane medium, was found to efficiently infect olive trees. Symptoms first appeared 30 weeks after the trees were transplanted into infested soil. Periods of increasing disease incidence in the following seasons and years were mainly during spring and autumn, particularly in the second year after planting. Olive trees exhibited a high susceptibility to the defoliating pathotype of the pathogen, even at very low inoculum levels; in fact, diseased plants were encountered throughout the experiment regardless of the inoculum density treatment. Inoculum densities greater than 3 ppg in the soil resulted in final disease incidence greater than 50% for the trees after 2.5 years. Therefore, these inoculum densities must be considered very high for olive trees. There were no differences in final disease incidence, mean symptom severity, or area under the disease progress curve between plots infested with 10 or 3.33 ppg, whereas other treatments exhibited lower values for each of these disease parameters. The temporal variations of disease incidence and severity were highly correlated for the higher inoculum density treatments, with r2 values ranging from 0.92 to 0.84 for disease incidence and from 0.93 to 0.88 for severity. However, r2 was slightly lower for the treatments involving lower inoculum densities of the pathogen in microplots. The slopes of the linear regression curves were statistically different for nearly all the inoculum density treatments. Positive correlation was found between the initial inoculum density and final disease incidence values after the study period that was accurately explained by mathematical models. The results suggest that susceptible olive cultivars should not be planted in soils infested with virulent defoliating pathotypes of V. dahliae. Results also clarify that inoculum density levels obtained from field soil analyses can be used for establishing a risk prediction system with a view to controlling VWO in olive tree plantations.

SummaryField experiments were carried out in the early and late growing seasons in the rainforest zone of Nigeria to find out the relationship between lodging, morphological characters and yield of maize.Morphological characters associated with lodging were plant height, ear height and length of basal internode. There was a negative correlation between lodging and yield. Much of the lodging recorded, especially in the early growing season, was due to weak stems. Earliness, diameter of stem and leaf area had no relationship with lodging.

In 2014, Ceratocystis fimbriata, causal agent of black rot in sweetpotato, reemerged and inflicted large financial losses on growers in the United States. Black rot continues to damage sweetpotatoes and has become a priority to the industry since then. In contrast, little is known about the biology of C. fimbriata and the epidemiology of sweetpotato black rot. In this study, effects of environmental factors such as inoculum density, RH, and temperature on sweetpotato black rot were determined. Cured sweetpotatoes were wounded with a toothpick to simulate puncture wounds, inoculated with different spore suspensions (inoculum density) (104, 105, or 106 spores/ml), and incubated under different RH (85.53, 94.09, or 97.01%) and temperature (13, 18, 23, 29, or 35°C) for 21 days. In a separate experiment, five root wounding types (cuts, punctures, abrasions, end breaks, and macerating bruises) were compared. All wounded roots were subsequently soaked in a 103 spores/ml suspension and incubated at 100% RH and 23°C for 21 days. This study found 29 and 23°C to be the optimal temperature for black rot disease development and sporulation, respectively. No pathogen growth was observed at 13 and 35°C. Increased inoculum density significantly (P < 0.0001) increased disease incidence, but increasing RH had an effect only on sporulation area. All wound types resulted in increased disease incidence and sporulation as early as 7 days postinoculation. Our results highlight the importance of characterizing factors that affect disease development for achieving successful disease management strategies. Findings from this study will be used to improve disease management for sweetpotato black rot by suggesting tighter regulation of curing and storage conditions and better postharvest handling of sweetpotato roots to avoid unnecessary wounding.

The effectiveness of shade intensity and time of day in which irrigation was applied were tested for control of anthracnose symptoms caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Penz. & Sacc. on container-grown Euonymus fortunei (Turcz.) Hand.-Mazz. `Canadale Gold', `Emerald 'n Gold', and `Emerald Gaiety' during the 2002 and 2003 growing seasons. Rooted cuttings in 3.8 L containers were placed in 0% (full sun), 63%, 73%, or 80% shade at Park Hill, Okla., in 2002 and 2003 and at Stillwater, Okla., in 2002. Overhead irrigation was used to irrigate one-half of the plants in each cultivar and shade treatment in the morning and the other one-half during the afternoon. At both sites, disease damage ratings were inversely related to shade intensity throughout each growing season. Disease incidence was usually lower on afternoon irrigated plants than on morning irrigated plants. `Canadale Gold' typically had the most anthracnose symptoms followed by `Emerald 'n Gold'. `Emerald Gaiety' had the least symptoms regardless of shade intensity or irrigation time.

Population dynamics of a meso-hygrophilous helicoid Bradybaena fruticum was studied in SW Poland at two localities with similar habitat but different climatic conditions. Unexpectedly, at the submontane site in Szczytna the growth appeared to be significantly faster than in the lowland site (Wrocław), where the weather conditions varied widely during the whole growing season. In Szczytna the average growth rate was 0.26 whorl/month; 0.36 whorl/month in the fast phase (juveniles from hatching till 5.0 whorls), and 0.07 whorl/month in the slow phase (snails with 5.1 whorls till lip formation). During the whole growing season, the average increment was 4.5 whorls, whereas the maximum was 5.45 whorls. In Wrocław the average growth rate was 0.05 whorl/month; 0.1 whorl/month in the fast phase, and only 0.01 whorl/month in the slow phase. The average growth of juveniles, estimated during two growing seasons, equalled 3.8 whorls; the maximum recorded value was 4.75 whorls. In the winter there was hardly any growth. In earlier studies it was found that at higher altitude the growth rate seems to decrease and therefore appears to be correlated with the thermal regime of the locality. In this study it was established that the weather patterns, like months with drought or occasional flooding, are likely to influence the population dynamics in the lowland population.

Control of muscadine diseases is necessary to minimize yield loss and is especially important for highest quality if the berries are to be marketed fresh. Throughout the 1998 growing season, vines of five muscadine cultivars (`Noble', `Summit', `Cowart', `Higgins', and `Carlos') were treated under a systematic disease control spray program; four fungicides registered for use on grapes were applied sequentially at 10- to 20-day intervals from early bloom until just before harvest. Control plants received no fungicide. The objectives of the study were to determine the effects of the spray schedule on foliage and berry diseases and to study the relationship between disease incidence and resveratrol content of the berries. Resveratrol is a phytoalexin and has been favorably implicated in cardiovascular disease and certain cancer processes. Foliar diseases were rated visually twice during the season. Berry disease ratings were made at harvest. All fungal foliage and berry diseases were significantly reduced by the fungicide treatments. Resveratrol concentrations were determined separately on berry skins, seed and pulp/juice by GC/MS. Overall, resveratrol levels in berry skins from unsprayed vines were much higher than those of sprayed vines. Concentrations varied by cultivar and within cultivar by treatment. The relationship of skin concentration and total disease score or scores of specific diseases has not been established. Seed resveratrol concentrations differed by cultivar but were not affected by the fungicide treatments. Mean concentration of seed was lower than that of skins. Accumulation of resveratrol in juice/pulp was much lower than in skins and seeds.
