The paper deals with safety of transport from the point of view of an important social problem, which are accidents at railroad (including tramway) and road level crossings, which means compatibility of rail and road vehicles crash. The scale of such accidents can be very wide. Regarding the statistics and frequency of accidents particularly at railway level crossings and tramway level crossings, a collision simulating the collision of a tram and passenger car was experimentally carried out. The experiment took place at the site of testing laboratory of Rail Vehicles Research Institute in Cerhenice. The experiment was conducted with a passenger car Škoda Superb of the first generation that was exposed to two collisions from both sides. Firstly by the impactor for tram headstock tests and secondly by the tram headstock itself. Both the impactor and the headstock were placed on the experimental vehicle for tests of passive safety of rail vehicles. Various speeds were chosen so that the passenger car could be used for two subsequent experiments without the influence on properties of skeleton´s supporting structure.

This little book is the most comprehensive treatise on all of the aspects of tracheotomy the reviewer has yet come across. Its bibliography alone comprises 293 references. It deals with nearly every type of ventilatory distress, and in addition to a standard section on the classic indications for tracheotomy from the mechanical point of view, it approaches the problem from the physiologic viewpoint with an up-to-date discussion of the syndrome of secretional ventilatory obstruction. After a very complete and interesting historical review of this ancient operative procedure, the author tabulates in various forms a series of 310 tracheotomies performed on 300 patients at the Brooke Army Hospital, Fort Sam Houston, Texas from 1947 to 1955.

We introduce a new method for modeling rating (utility) functions which employs techniques from fuzzy set theory. The main idea is to build a hierarchical model, called a fuzzy operator tree (FOT), by recursively decomposing a rating criterion into sub-criteria, and to combine the evaluations of these sub-criteria by means of suitable aggregation operators. Apart from the model conception itself, we propose an evolutionary method for model calibration that fits the parameters of an FOT to exemplary ratings. The possibility to adapt an FOT to a given set of data makes the approach also interesting from a machine learning point of view. The performance of the approach is evaluated by means of a suitable experimental study.

The aim of this research was to identify students' preconceptions concerning statistical association in contingency tables. An experimental study was carried out with 213 preuniversity students, and it was based on students' responses to a written questionnaire including 2 × 2, 2 × 3, and 3 × 3 contingency tables. In this article, the students' judgments of association and solution strategies are compared with the findings of previous psychological research on 2 × 2 contingency tables. We also present an original classification of students' strategies, from a mathematical point of view. Correspondence analysis is used to show the effect of item task variables on students' strategies. Finally, we include a qualitative analysis of the strategies of 51 students, which has served to characterize three misconceptions concerning statistical association.

The partially infilled frames are considered vulnerable in terms of captive column effect for the events of earthquakes. Many reinforced concrete buildings have been affected due to captive column effects. Experimental study has been done to verify the captive column effect and its failure modes for partially infilled frames and the results have been compared with the ones obtained for a bare frame subjected to lateral loading. The results of experimental study have also been compared with some analytical results and the verification of equivalent strut width proposed by one of the authors has been done. From the experimental point of view, it is understandable that due to lateral loading to partially infilled frames, the damage pattern is diagonal and the failure of column occurs at the column-wall joint at the upper side of the wall. It is also seen that for fifty percent partially infilled frames, the stiffness of bare frame is enhanced slightly, however, the failure in the column during lateral loading indicates that the columns are subjected to high shear due to the presence of partial infill.

Abstract In various publications we have previously shown that in many cases it is advantageous to consider jellies as formed of a polymerized colloidal substance, the length of the molecular chains being easily changed according to the conditions of the system and unlike one another at all times in a single sample. These chains retain free affinities at their extremities to which can be linked so-called solvating groups arising from the solvent or from soluble substances contained in the jelly. The present work refutes the interpretation given to recent experiments on the vapor pressure of jellies and confirms in certain new ways this constitution. (1) The experiments of Stamberger on the vapor pressure of rubber jellies and their consistency before and after a prolonged mastication do not support the Harries hypothesis on the stability of the rubber molecule, but merely show that the theory of true liquid solutions is not applicable to jellies. (2) Based on the idea that polymerization changes with solvation, it is easily shown that the relative swelling in a solvent and in its saturated vapor are not contradictory with the principles of thermodynamics, as it would seem, but on the contrary proceed normally and could have been predicted. (3) In the study by Scott on the slow but unlimited swelling of rubber beyond the saturation point, this author has come to assume that swelling is a double phenomenon, which confirms our point of view. (4) The experimental study of the contraction of rubber during swelling shows that this effect does not change its sign at any moment and that consequently the change of sign of the heat evolved in this same process has a cause distinct from that of the initial swelling; perhaps it is to be attributed to the chemical phenomenon of solvation.

The present study aims at analyzing the polysemy of the English preposition in from the cognitive linguistic (CL) point of view using Evans' and Tyler's approach (2003). The perplexity faced by Iraqi second language learners (L2) due to the multi-usages of this preposition has motivated the researcher to conduct this study. Seventy-six second year university students participated in this experimental study. The data of the pre-test and post-test were analyzed by SPSS statistical editor. The results have shown the following: First, a progress of more than (0.05≤) has been detected as far as students' understanding of the multiple usages of the preposition in is concerned. Second, the results of the questionnaire have shown a prominent positive change in the students' attitude toward CL approach. Third, the main source of difficulty has been shown to be attributed to the diversity in the semantics of the preposition in. Fourth, CL as an approach has proven its effectiveness in accurately comprehending the semantics of the English preposition in.
