The meteorological requirements for satellite methods of observing, sensing and communication are here considered in the context of the World Weather Watch and the associated Global Atmospheric Research Programme (GARP). The World Weather Watch (www), adopted unanimously by the 122 member states of the World Meteorological Organization in May 1967, is being planned as a permanent operational system of improved meteorological observations, communications, and data-processing facilities aimed at enhancing our understanding of the global circulation of the atmosphere and producing weather forecasts of greater reliability and range.
