In the Higgs mechanism, mediators of the weak force acquire masses by interacting with the Higgs condensate, leading to a vector boson mass matrix. On the other hand, a rigid body accelerated through an inviscid, incompressible and irrotational fluid feels an opposing force linearly related to its acceleration, via an added-mass tensor. We uncover a striking physical analogy between the two effects and propose a dictionary relating them. The correspondence turns the gauge Lie algebra into the space of directions in which the body can move, encodes the pattern of gauge symmetry breaking in the shape of an associated body and relates symmetries of the body to those of the scalar vacuum manifold. The new viewpoint is illustrated with numerous examples, and raises interesting questions, notably on the fluid analogues of the broken symmetry and Higgs particle, and the field-theoretic analogue of the added mass of a composite body.

We study the dynamics and locomotion of a neutrally-buoyant deformable body that can undergo finite shape deformations and is immersed in a perfect and incompressible fluid. We model the body as a constrained Cosserat beam, more precisely, a Kirchhoff beam, and we derive the equations governing its motion in potential flow where the ambient fluid is accounted for using the added mass effect. We show that the submerged beam can undergo net locomotion due to applied torsional loading on its centerline.

A formulation is proposed of Abelian chiral gauge theory which is invariant with respect to a gauge symmetry and admits both fermion and vector-boson mass terms, without invoking the Higgs mechanism. The issues of unitarity and renormalizability are discussed, and a lattice chiral regularization free from the problem of fermion-species doubling is constructed and compared with others.

Abstract A search is presented for a Higgs boson that is produced via vector boson fusion and that decays to an undetected particle and an isolated photon. The search is performed by the CMS collaboration at the LHC, using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 130 fb−1, recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016–2018. No significant excess of events above the expectation from the standard model background is found. The results are interpreted in the context of a theoretical model in which the undetected particle is a massless dark photon. An upper limit is set on the product of the cross section for production via vector boson fusion and the branching fraction for such a Higgs boson decay, as a function of the Higgs boson mass. For a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, assuming the standard model production rates, the observed (expected) 95% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction is 3.5 (2.8)%. This is the first search for such decays in the vector boson fusion channel. Combination with a previous search for Higgs bosons produced in association with a Z boson results in an observed (expected) upper limit on the branching fraction of 2.9 (2.1)% at 95% confidence level.

Abstract We consider the generation of neutrino masses via a singly-charged scalar singlet. Under general assumptions we identify two distinct structures for the neutrino mass matrix. This yields a constraint for the antisymmetric Yukawa coupling of the singly-charged scalar singlet to two left-handed lepton doublets, irrespective of how the breaking of lepton-number conservation is achieved. The constraint disfavours large hierarchies among the Yukawa couplings. We study the implications for the phenomenology of lepton-flavour universality, measurements of the W-boson mass, flavour violation in the charged-lepton sector and decays of the singly-charged scalar singlet. We also discuss the parameter space that can address the Cabibbo Angle Anomaly.

In this paper, the reduction in the natural frequencies of a pump-turbine impeller prototype when submerged in water has been investigated. The impeller, with a diameter of 2.870m belongs to a pump-turbine unit with a power of around 100MW. To analyze the influence of the added mass, both experimental tests and numerical simulations have been carried out. The experiment has been performed in air and in water. From the frequency response functions the modal characteristics such as natural frequencies and mode shapes have been obtained. A numerical simulation using FEM (Finite Elements Model) was done using the same boundary conditions as in the experiment (impeller in air and surrounded by a mass of water). The modal behaviour has also been calculated. The numerical results were compared with the available experimental results. The comparison shows a good agreement in the natural frequency values both in air and in water. The reduction in frequency due to the added mass effect of surrounding fluid has been calculated. The physics of this phenomenon due to the fluid structure interaction has been investigated from the analysis of the mode-shapes.

Static and rotordynamic coefficients are measured for a rocker-pivot, tilting-pad journal bearing (TPJB) with 50 and 60% offset pads in a load-between-pad (LBP) configuration. The bearing uses leading-edge-groove direct lubrication and has the following characteristics: 5-pads, 101.6 mm (4.0 in) nominal diameter,0.0814 -0.0837 mm (0.0032–0.0033 in) radial bearing clearance, 0.25 to 0.27 preload, and 60.325 mm (2.375 in) axial pad length. Tests were performed on a floating bearing test rig with unit loads from 0 to 3101 kPa (450 psi) and speeds from 7 to 16 krpm. Dynamic tests were conducted over a range of frequencies (20 to 320 Hz) to obtain complex dynamic stiffness coefficients as functions of excitation frequency. For most test conditions, the real dynamic stiffness functions were well fitted with a quadratic function with respect to frequency. This curve fit allowed for the stiffness frequency dependency to be captured by including an added mass matrix [M] to a conventional [K][C] model, yielding a frequency independent [K][C][M] model. The imaginary dynamic stiffness coefficients increased linearly with frequency, producing frequency-independent direct damping coefficients. Direct stiffness coefficients were larger for the 60% offset bearing at light unit loads. At high loads, the 50% offset configuration had a larger stiffness in the loaded direction, while the unloaded direct stiffness was approximately the same for both pivot offsets. Cross-coupled stiffness coefficients were positive and significantly smaller than direct stiffness coefficients. Negative direct added-mass coefficients were obtained for both offsets, especially in the unloaded direction. Cross-coupled added-mass coefficients are generally positive and of the same sign. Direct damping coefficients were mostly independent of load and speed, showing no appreciable difference between pivot offsets. Cross-coupled damping coefficients had the same sign and were much smaller than direct coefficients. Measured static eccentricities suggested cross coupling stiffness exists for both pivot offsets, agreeing with dynamic measurements. Static stiffness measurements showed good agreement with the loaded, direct dynamic stiffness coefficients.

In his preceding memoirs, the author has shown that two very dissimilar types of structure present themselves among Foraminifera, one characterized by its simplicity, the other by its complexity. In the former, of which Orbitolites, Orbiculina and Alveolina are typical examples, the calcareous skeleton does not present any definite indications of organization, but seems to have been formed by the simple calcification of a portion of the homogeneous sarcode-body of the animal; that sarcode-body is but very imperfectly divided into segments, the communications between the cavities occupied by these segments being very free and irregular; the form of the segments themselves, and the mode of their connexion, are alike inconstant; and even the plan of growth, on which the character of the organism as a whole depends, though preserving a general uniformity, is by no means invariably maintained. In the latter, to which Cycloclypeus and Heterostegina belong, the calcareous skeleton is found to present a very definite and elaborate organization. The several segments of the body are so completely separated from each other, that they remain connected only by delicate threads of sarcode. Each segment thus isolated has its own proper calcareous envelope, which seems to be moulded (as it were) upon it; and this envelope or shell is perforated with minute parallel tubuli closely resembling those of dentine, except in the absence of bifurcation; the partition-walls between adjacent segments are consequently double, and are strengthened by an intermediate calcareous deposit, which is traversed by a system of inosculating passages that seems properly to belong to it. The form of the segments, their mode of communication, and consequently the general plan of growth, have a very considerable degree of constancy; and altogether the tendency is strongly manifested in this type to the greater individualization of the parts of the composite body, which in the preceding must be looked upon rather as constituting one aggregate whole. In the present memoir this contrast is fully carried out by a detailed comparison of two characteristic examples from these types respectively, each of them having its own features of peculiar interest.

There is a force peak at the beginning of each stroke during the insect flight, this force peak contributes a lot to the total aerodynamic force. To build a man made insect inspired man-made micro aero vehicle, this force need to be considered in the aero force model, and this model should as simple as possible in order to be used in feedback real-time control. Here we presented a simplified model to take the medium added mass effect of the wing into account. Simulated results show a high force peak at the beginning of each stroke and are quite similar to the measured forces on the physical wing model which were carried out by Dickinson et.al.

The unsteady inviscid force on cylinders and spheres in subcritical compressible flow is investigated. In the limit of incompressible flow, the unsteady inviscid force on a cylinder or sphere is the so-called added-mass force that is proportional to the product of the mass displaced by the body and the instantaneous acceleration. In compressible flow, the finite acoustic propagation speed means that the unsteady inviscid force arising from an instantaneously applied constant acceleration develops gradually and reaches steady values only for non-dimensional times c ∞ t / R ≳10, where c ∞ is the freestream speed of sound and R is the radius of the cylinder or sphere. In this limit, an effective added-mass coefficient may be defined. The main conclusion of our study is that the freestream Mach number has a pronounced effect on both the peak value of the unsteady force and the effective added-mass coefficient. At a freestream Mach number of 0.5, the effective added-mass coefficient is about twice as large as the incompressible value for the sphere. Coupled with an impulsive acceleration, the unsteady inviscid force in compressible flow can be more than four times larger than that predicted from incompressible theory. Furthermore, the effect of the ratio of specific heats on the unsteady force becomes more pronounced as the Mach number increases.
