Consumer diet estimation with biotracer-based mixing models provides valuable information about trophic interactions and the dynamics of complex ecosystems. Here, we assessed the performance of four Bayesian and three numerical optimization-based diet estimation methods for estimating the diet composition of herbivorous zooplankton using consumer fatty acid (FA) profiles and resource library consisting of the results of homogeneous diet feeding experiments. The method performance was evaluated in terms of absolute errors, central probability interval checks, the success in identifying the primary resource in the diet, and the ability to detect the absence of resources in the diet. Despite occasional large inconsistencies, all the methods were able to identify the primary resource most of the time. The numerical optimization method QFASA using χ 2 (QFASA-CS) or Kullback–Leibler (QFASA-KL) distance measures had the smallest absolute errors, most frequently found the primary resource, and adequately detected the absence of resources. While the Bayesian methods usually performed well, some of the methods produced ambiguous results and some had much longer computing times than QFASA. Therefore, we recommend using QFASA-CS or QFASA-KL. Our systematic tests showed that FA models can be used to accurately estimate complex dietary mixtures in herbivorous zooplankton. This article is part of the theme issue ‘The next horizons for lipids as ‘trophic biomarkers': evidence and significance of consumer modification of dietary fatty acids'.

Abstract In this paper we discuss applications of the numerical optimization methods for nonsmooth optimization, developed in [IK1] for the variational formulation of image restoration problems involving bounded variation type energy criterion. The Uzawa’s algorithm, first order augmented Lagrangian methods and Newton-like update using the active set strategy are described.

A multiobjective optimization method for a dual-mode microwave applicator is proposed. Dual-modality means that microwaves are used apart from the treatment, and also for the monitoring of the microwave ablation intervention. (1) The use of computational models to develop and improve microwave ablation applicator geometries is essential for further advances in this field. (2) Numerical electromagnetic–thermal coupled simulation models are used to analyze the performance of the dual-mode applicator in liver tissue; the sensitivity evaluation of the dual-mode applicator’s sensing mode constrains the set of optimal solutions. (3) Three Pareto-optimal design parameter sets are derived that are optimal in terms of applicator efficiency as well as volume and sphericity of the ablation zone. The resulting designs of the dual-mode applicator provide a suitable sensitivity to distinguish between healthy and tumorous liver tissue. (4) The optimized designs are presented and numerically characterized. An improvement on the performance of previously proposed dual-mode applicator designs is achieved. The multiphysical simulation model of electromagnetic and thermal properties of the applicator is applicable for future comprehensive design procedures.

Structural designs of complex buildings and infrastructures have long been based on engineering experience and a trial-and-error approach. The structural performance is checked each time when a design is determined. An alternative strategy based on numerical optimization techniques can provide engineers an effective and efficient design approach. To achieve an optimal design, a finite element (FE) program is employed to calculate structural responses including forces and deformations. A gradient-based or gradient-free optimization method can be integrated with the FE program to guide the design iterations, until certain convergence criteria are met. Due to the iterative nature of the numerical optimization, a user programming is required to repeatedly access and modify input data and to collect output data of the FE program. In this study, an approximation method was developed so that the structural responses could be expressed as approximate functions, and that the accuracy of the functions could be adaptively improved. In the method, the FE program was not required to be directly looped in the optimization iterations. As a practical illustrative example, a 3D reinforced concrete building structure was optimized. The proposed method worked very well and optimal designs were found to reduce the torsional responses of the building.

Abstract A hybrid-type expert system is developed for supporting the initial design process of marine power plants. Firstly, discussion is given generally to understand design process in the view point of applying the AI technique effectively to design. Based on the result of the discussion, a hybrid-type expert CAD system with coupling the AI technique and the numerical optimization method is developed. In the system, the design knowledge is represented in the production rules, and the data of machineries consisting the plant are described by the frame-type representation. Through the system execution, it is ascertained that the system is effective not only as the design tool assisting designers but also as the tool instructing inexperienced designers.

In this study, a numerical optimization method is proposed to achieve the near-field focusing of square arrays and circular arrays. This method introduced the frequency diversity array (FDA) approach to change the initial amplitude and working frequency. By adjusting the working state of each antenna, the field distribution on any plane can be artificially controlled. To analyze the FDA, a mathematical model for the FDA has been built and the model has been optimized by a numerical algorithm. The results of two different kinds of arrays are verified by numerical methods and full-wave simulation.

In contrast to birds, bats are possibly limited in their capacity to use body fat as an energy source for long migrations. Here, we studied the fuel choice of migratory Pipistrellus nathusii (approximate weight: 8 g) by analysing the stable carbon isotope ratio ( δ 13 C V-PDB ) of breath and potential energy sources. Breath δ 13 C V-PDB was intermediate between δ 13 C V-PDB of insect prey and adipocyte triacylglycerols, suggesting a mixed-fuel use of P. nathusii during autumn migration. To clarify the origin of oxidized fatty acids, we performed feeding experiments with captive P. nathusii . After an insect diet, bat breath was enriched in 13 C relative to the bulk and fat portion of insects, but not deviating from the non-fat portion of insects, suggesting that bats oxidized exogenous proteins and carbohydrates, but not exogenous fatty acids. A feeding experiment with 13 C-labelled substrates confirmed these findings. In conclusion, migratory P. nathusii oxidized dietary proteins directly from insects captured en route in combination with endogenous fatty acids from adipocytes, and replenished their body reserves by routing dietary fatty acids to their body reserves.

This paper proposes a novel optimization method that allows a reduction in the pollutant emission of diesel engines during transient operation. The key idea is to synthesize optimal actuator commands using reliable models of the engine system and powerful numerical optimization methods. The engine model includes a mean-value engine model for the dynamics of the gas paths, including the turbocharger of the fuel injection, and of the torque generation. The pollutant formation is modeled using an extended quasi-static modeling approach. The optimization substantially changes the input signals, such that the engine model is enabled to extrapolate all relevant outputs beyond the regular operating area. A feedforward controller for the injected fuel mass is used to eliminate the nonlinear path constraints during the optimization. The model is validated using experimental data obtained on a transient engine test bench. A direct single shooting method is found to be most effective for the numerical optimization. The results show a significant potential for reducing the pollutant emissions during transient operation of the engine. The optimized input trajectories derived assist the design of sophisticated engine control systems.

The rear characteristic angles of the passenger car in this study were defined as the inclination angle of rear window and the bottom inclination angle of aft based on the MIRA model. The numerical optimization method was used to analyze the influence of combined variation of two angles on the external flow field and the CD of the passenger car, in which we combined genetic algorithm with the CFD simulation to reduce aerodynamic drag by seeking the relatively optimal combination of two parameters above. The study reveals that when the combination of the inclination angle of rear window and bottom inclination angle of aft is 25oand 0.067o, the total pressure and streamline distribution in the flow fields of the MIRA model are improved greatly and the CD is reduced compared with the worst combination. This conclusion will have profound guiding significance in the aerodynamic design of the rear styling and shape of a car.
