The characteristics of the intergenic spacer rDNAs (IGS rDNAs) ofOesophagostomum dentatumandO. quadrispinulatumisolated from pigs in different geographical locations in Mainland China were determined, and the phylogenetic relationships of the two species were reconstructed using the IGS rDNA sequences. The organization of the IGS rDNA sequences was similar to their organization in other eukaryotes. The 28S-18S IGS rDNA sequences of bothO. dentatumandO. quadrispinulatumwere found to have variable lengths, that is, 759–762 bp and 937–1128 bp, respectively. All of the sequences contained direct repeats and inverted repeats. The length polymorphisms were related to the different numbers and organization of repetitive elements. Different types and numbers of repeats were found between the two pig nodule species, and two IGS structures were found withinO. quadrispinulatum. Phylogenetic analysis showed that allO. dentatumisolates were clustered into one clade, butO. quadrispinulatumisolates from different origins were grouped into two distinct clusters. These results suggested independent species and the existence of genotypes or subspecies within pig nodule worms. Different types and numbers of repeats and IGS rDNA structures could serve as potential markers for differentiating these two species of pig nodule worms.

The genus Metadinium includes ophryoscolecid ciliates, with two retractile ciliary zones in the anterior body portion, two broad skeletal plates, a lobed macronucleus and two contractile vacuoles. Species belonging to this genus were recorded in several geographical locations and in different host species. However, they were mostly described based on a single ciliatological technique, and until now, there is only one description of the infraciliary pattern in Metadinium ciliates (Metadinium medium). The present study performs the morphological and infraciliature characterization of four species belonging to Metadinium: M. esalqum, M. minorum, M. rotundatum and M. ypsilon; and presents taxonomic notes on the genus. The oral infraciliature in these four Metadinium species corresponds to the Diplodinium-type, pattern shared with genera Diplodinium, Diploplastron, Eudiplodinium, Eremoplastron and Polyplastron. A brief review conducted highlights the difficulty of delimiting Metadinium species due to the morphological similarity among them.

ABSTRACT Fifty-one pulsed-field gel electrophoresis types and 17 Tn1546 variants were identified among 101 Enterococcus faecium isolates recovered in three distant Portuguese hospitals. Intra- and interhospital dissemination of specific strains and Tn1546 types was detected, which might largely contribute to the endemicity of vancomycin-resistant E. faecium in Portuguese hospitals, as happened previously in other geographical locations.

Abstract. Radiosonde observations (RAOBs) have provided the only long-term global in situ temperature measurements in the troposphere and lower stratosphere since 1958. In this study, we use consistently reprocessed Global Positioning System (GPS) radio occultation (RO) temperature data derived from COSMIC and Metop-A/GRAS missions from 2006 to 2014 to characterize the inter-seasonal and inter-annual variability of temperature biases in the lower stratosphere for different sensor types. The results show that the RAOB temperature biases for different RAOB sensor types are mainly owing to i) uncorrected solar zenith angle dependent errors, and ii) change of radiation correction. The mean daytime temperature difference (ΔT) for Vaisala RS92 is equal to 0.18 K in Australia, 0.20 K in Germany, 0.10 K in Canada, 0.13 K in England, and 0.33 K in Brazil. The mean daytime ΔT is equal to −0.06 K for Sippican, 0.71 K for VIZ-B2, 0.66 K for AVK-MRZ, and 0.18 K for Shanghai. The daytime trend of anomalies for Vaisala RS92 and RO temperature at 50 hPa is equal to 0.00 K/5 yrs over United States, −0.02 K/5 yrs over Germany, 0.17 K/5 yrs over Australia, 0.23 K/5 yrs over Canada, 0.26 K/5 yrs over England, and 0.12 K/5 yrs over Brazil, respectively. Although there still exist uncertainties for Vaisala RS92 temperature measurements over different geographical locations, the global trend of temperature anomaly between Vaisala RS92 and RO from June 2006 to April 2014 is within +/−0.09 K/5 yrs globally. Comparing with Vaisala RS80, Vaisala RS90 and sondes from other manufacturers, the Vaisala RS92 seems to provide the best RAOB temperature measurements, which can potentially be used to construct long term temperature CDRs. Results from this study also demonstrate the feasibility to use RO data to correct RAOB temperature biases for different sensor types.

In this context, aim of this study is to determine the effect of Çekişte olive oils in different locations and show differences on geographical locations while taking geographical indication label. Çekişte olive oil variety which cultivated in six different locations (Birgi, Bademli, Beyazit, Yeniceköy, Zeytinlik, Uzumlu) were evaluated the effects of geographical locations on the chemical characterization of in the southwest of Turkey. The agricultural ecological map of each location was created using GIS. Olive oil samples were analyzed fatty acid, sterol and phenolic. Moreover, LC IMS Qtof spectrometer and Progenesis QI software were used to determine the geographical fingerprints of olive oil samples in different locations. Results showed that oil qualities of some locations differ significantly depending on olive growing area (p <0.05), some of them not. The Principal Component Analysis of the different locations analyzed revealed that "geographical location" factor significantly affects the olive oil quality.

Sabkha is an inferior and indigenous type of soil which forms widely in the Arabian Gulf and in many parts of Saudi Arabia, especially in the coastal areas. Several studies over the last 25 years have been conducted to develop a better understanding and characterization of Sabkha soil and to improve its strength and durability. Different studies from different perspectives, different geographical locations, and particular types were discussed with specific treatment for its improvement. The main purpose of this study is to conclude Saudi Arabian Sabkha Soil characteristics, its associated problems, and to recapitulate the current technologies and practices for the improvement of it. The relative advantages and some of the drawbacks of currently available techniques have also been discussed. Scope and future development regarding this field have also been summarized. Preloading technique was found to be effective for stabilization and consolidation of Sabkha soil over longer period of time. Another study revealed characterizing Saudi Arabian Sabkha soil using seismic refraction technique. Other comparative research was studied which focused on the improvement of Sabkha soil for road construction using geotextile and cement additives. The results suggest that both of the techniques have similar effect on the improvement of subgrade but the geotextile application is more economical as compared to others. Geotextile (grade A-400) with greater strength and thickness exhibits higher load carrying capability which leads to less deformation settlement on the subgrade.

Xylella fastidiosa is a bacterial pathogen causing severe diseases and asymptomatic colonization in more than 600 plants worldwide. Copper (Cu) is a widely used antimicrobial treatment for various plant diseases, including those affecting X. fastidiosa hosts. Cu homeostasis among X. fastidiosa strains from different geographical locations and host species has not been characterized. Here, we assessed minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Cu for 54 X. fastidiosa strains. We observed strain-level variation in MIC values within each subspecies. We hypothesized that these differences could be explained by sequence variation in Cu homeostasis genes. Phylogenies based on copA, copB, copL, and cutC were created using 74 genomes (including 43 strains used in vitro) of X. fastidiosa, showing that the phylogenetic clustering of Cu homeostasis associated with clustering was based on core genome phylogenies, rather than on pattern of MIC. No association was found among Cu MIC, subspecies classification, and host and location of isolation, probably due to uneven and limited group of strains whose genomes are available. Further analysis focused on a subgroup of isolates from Georgia’s vineyards that shared similar Cu-related phenotypes. Further research is needed to better understand the distribution of Cu homeostasis for this pathogen.

The nature and frequency of mutations in the rpoB gene of M. tuberculosis (MBT) vary considerably in various geographical locations. There is no information on the prevalence of specific mutations in the rpoB gene of MBT isolated from patients in Kyrgyz Republic. In this work, we analyzed a distribution of the rpoB gene mutations in Kyrgyz Republic. A total of 380 rifampicin-sensitive and 225 rifampicin-resistant MBT cultures were analyzed to identify and to characterize mutations in the rpoB gene using a biological microchip assay. The biochip test determined 18 different mutation types in 8 codons of the rifampicin-resistant samples. The majority of mutations (180 of 225, or 80 %) were in the codons 531 and 526, mainly in the codon 531 (137 of 225, 60.8 %). The Ser531>Leu mutation (134 of 225, 59.4 %) was by far the most common. Another group of mutations were in the codon 526 (43 of 225, 19.1 %). Five different types of mutations were found in the codon 526 which were: His526®Tyr (4.9 %), His 526®Asp (4.9 %), His526®Arg (4.0 %), His526®Leu (3.5 %), and His526®Pro (1.8 %). The third group of common mutations were Leu511®Pro (6.3 %) and Asp516®Tyr (4.4 %). Other mutations found in the codons 533, 522, 513, and 512 were less frequent and had a very low rate comprising about 1.8 % of the total mutation number among 225 rifampicinresistant samples.
