The authors have reported the first case of vaginal infection caused by Enterococcus raffinosus. The latter is a rarely identified species, but some of the infections described in the literature should direct some attention to this, often opportunistic pathogen, and its emerging multidrug resistance.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in children isseldom found. The incidence of thistumor in childhood is estimated to be 0.1-0.3% out of all neoplasms and 2-7% out ofall malignant renal tumors. The Third NationalCancer Survey reported an incidence of only four casesof RCC per year compared to 117 per year of Wilms’tumor.The incidence of RCC has not been reported inIndonesia. This is the first case of childhood RCCfound in our institution. To the best of our knowl-edge, this is the first report of childhood RCC in In-donesia.

SummaryThe present study reports the first case of infection by Pterygodermatites affinis in Lycalopex gymnocercus, and the first report of this nematode in Argentina. Examining 80 foxes from Buenos Aires province, specimens of this species were recovered from 21.25 % of the small intestines and eggs were found in 7.5 % of the fecal samples.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major human opportunistic pathogen, especially for patients in intensive care units or with cystic fibrosis. Multidrug resistance is a common feature of this species. In a previous study we detected the ant(4′)-IIb gene in six multiresistant clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa, and determination of the environment of the gene led to characterization of Tn6061. This 26 586 bp element, a member of the Tn3 family of transposons, carried 10 genes conferring resistance to six drug classes. The ant(4′)-IIb sequence was flanked by directly repeated copies of ISCR6 in all but one of the strains studied, consistent with ISCR6-mediated gene acquisition. Tn6061 was chromosomally located in six strains and plasmid-borne in the remaining isolate, suggesting horizontal acquisition. Duplication-insertion of IS6100, that ended Tn6061, was responsible for large chromosomal inversions. Acquisition of Tn6061 and chromosomal inversions are further examples of intricate mechanisms that contribute to the genome plasticity of P. aeruginosa.

Abstract Background We report the first case of canine Salmonella meningoencephalomyelitis and second case of canine Salmonella bacteriuria, as well as the first reported case of Salmonella enterica subspecies houtenae in a dog. Case presentation Immunosuppressive treatment in a dog for a relapse of steroid-responsive meningitis and arteritis (SRMA) allowed for the opportunistic establishment of a bacteremia with Salmonella enterica subsp. houtenae, ultimately causing meningoencephalomyelitis and subclinical bacteriuria. The bacterial infections were treated with a four-month course of amoxicillin; clinical treatment success was determined by serial negative urine cultures and lack of clinical signs correlated to the meningoencephalomyelitis. Conclusions Both the bacteriuria and meningoencephalomyelitis represented opportunistic infections in a dog immunosuppressed for SRMA. The clinical course of this infectious meningoencephalitis emphasizes the importance of differentiating relapse of initial disease from opportunistic infection occurring in a compromised central nervous system. The novel Salmonella species identified in this case acts as a reminder that infectious disease diagnostics should not be curbed by anecdotal prediction of routine pathogenic suspects.

Beta thalassemia (β-thal) is one of the most common worldwide inherited hemoglobinopathies. Proper identification and diagnosis of hemoglobin (Hb) variants provide a major challenge. In this report, we describe a 1-year-old boy, presented with the diagnosis of β-TM (beta thalassemia major), has received regular blood transfusions. The molecular analysis revealed the presence of rare Hb Castilla [Beta 32(B14) Leu>Arg; HBB: c.98T>G] variant associated with β0 [IVS-I-1 (G>A); AG^GTTGGT- >AGATTGGT beta0] (HBB:c.92+1G>A) Mutation in beta-globin (β-globin) gene. To our knowledge, this is the first report of Hb Castilla [Beta 32(B14) Leu>Arg] in ExonII of β-globin gene which were found in Syrian male proband. However, we should investigate abnormal hemoglobins in patients with beta thalassemia to determine whether they have involvement with β-thalassemia mutations in the clinical case of the patients or not.

ABSTRACT Objectives: To clarify the pandemic status in Western Pacific countries or territories. Methods: The WHO’s daily situation reports of COVID-19 were reviewed from January 20, 2020, to March 24, 2020. Changes in the infections, deaths, and the case fatality rate (CFR) in Western Pacific countries or territories were counted. Results: As of March 24, a total of 17 countries or territories had reported the presence of COVID-19 in the Western Pacific Region, 96,580 people have been infected and a total of 3502 deaths. Fifty-three percent (9/17) of these countries or territories had their first case within 2 wk since the WHO’s first report, most are China’s neighbors with a large and dense population. No other country or territory in this region reported a new infection from January 30 to February 28. However, 8 (47.0%) countries or territories have reported the first cases in 3 wk since February 28, almost all are islands. Many countries maintained a small number of infections for a long time after the first report, but a rapid increase occurred later. Deaths occurred in 8 countries with a total CFR of 3.63%, and the CFR varies widely, from 0.39% (Singapore) to 7.14% (Philippines). Conclusions: The regional spread of COVID-19 urgently requires an aggressive preparedness for the Western Pacific Islands.

We describe a case of Buruli ulcer diagnosed by tissue culture and PCR in a Caucasian male returning from Madagascar where he served as a health-care worker in the Antsiranana region. To the best of our knowledge, this could be the first case of Mycobacterium ulcerans infection reported in Madagascar.

Stenotrophomonasssp. has a wide environmental distribution and is also found as an opportunistic pathogen, causing nosocomial or community-acquired infections. One species,S. maltophilia, presents multidrug resistance and has been associated with serious infections in pediatric and immunocompromised patients. Therefore, it is relevant to conduct resistance profile and phylogenetic studies in clinical isolates for identifying infection origins and isolates with augmented pathogenic potential. Here, multilocus sequence typing was performed for phylogenetic analysis of nosocomial isolates ofStenotrophomonasspp. and, environmental and clinical strains ofS. maltophilia. Biochemical and multidrug resistance profiles of nosocomial and clinical strains were determined. The inferred phylogenetic profile showed high clonal variability, what correlates with the adaptability process ofStenotrophomonasto different habitats. Two clinical isolates subgroups ofS. maltophiliasharing high phylogenetic homogeneity presented intergroup recombination, thus indicating the high permittivity to horizontal gene transfer, a mechanism involved in the acquisition of antibiotic resistance and expression of virulence factors. For most of the clinical strains, phylogenetic inference was made using only partialppsA gene sequence. Therefore, the sequencing of just one specific fragment of this gene would allow, in many cases, determining whether the infection withS. maltophiliawas nosocomial or community-acquired.

This report describes a 14-year-old Pit Bull dog presenting with a soft tissue swelling of 3-month progression in the right sublingual region. Histopathological analysis of the surgically resected specimen revealed large numbers of mature adipocytes and islets consisting of mucin-containing atrophic acini and dilated ducts surrounded by a thin fibrous capsule. Findings were consistent with sialolipoma of the sublingual salivary gland. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first case of sialolipoma affecting the sublingual salivary gland in dogs.
