AbstractThis paper describes a portable, prosthetic control system for at-home use of an advanced bionic arm. The system uses a modified Kalman filter to provide 6 degree-of-freedom, real-time, proportional control. We describe (a) how the system trains motor control algorithms for use with an advanced bionic arm, and (b) the system’s ability to record an unprecedented and comprehensive dataset of EMG, hand positions and force sensor values. Intact participants and a transradial amputee used the system to perform activities-of-daily-living, including bi-manual tasks, in the lab and at home. This technology enables at-home dexterous bionic arm use, and provides a high-temporal resolution description of daily use—essential information to determine clinical relevance and improve future research for advanced bionic arms.

Automated traffic signal performance measures (ATSPMs) are designed to equip traffic signal controllers with high-resolution data-logging capabilities which may be used to generate performance measures. These measures allow practitioners to improve operations as well as to maintain and operate their systems in a safe and efficient manner. While they have changed the way that operators manage their systems, several shortcomings of ATSPMs, as identified by signal operators, include a lack of data quality control and the extent of resources required to use the tool properly for system-wide management. To address these shortcomings, intelligent traffic signal performance measurements (ITSPMs) are presented in this paper, using the concepts of machine learning, traffic flow theory, and data visualization to reduce the operator resources needed for overseeing data-driven ATSPMs. In applying these concepts, ITSPMs provide graphical tools to identify and remove logging errors and data from bad sensors, to determine trends in demand intelligently, and to address the question of whether or not coordination may be needed at an intersection. The focus of ATSPMs and ITSPMs on performance measures for multimodal users is identified as a pressing need for future research.

Based on the simplex style of the traditional medical beds at home and abroad presently, a new folding mechanism of multifunctional medical bed was presented. After theoretical analysis, an optimal structure was selected. This mechanism consists of several planar four-bar linkages. It has one degree of freedom, which means it can be driven by only one driving torque to achieve multi-states changes. Therefore, it could save the space and reduce the weight of the bed as much as possible. The analysis of mechanism was carried out, simulation and stability were performed as well. A proto was established in the software named Automatic Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical Systems (ADAMS) to verify feasibility of the mechanism and the correctness of the design principle. It is an ingenious and brief design, which provides useful information for future research about folding medical bed.

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the UK Government provided public health advice to stay at home from 16 March 2020, followed by instruction to stay at home (full lockdown) from 24 March 2020. We use data with high temporal resolution from utility sensors installed in 280 homes across social housing in Cornwall, UK, to test for changes in domestic electricity, gas and water usage in response to government guidance. Gas usage increased by 20% following advice to stay at home, the week before full lockdown, although no difference was seen during full lockdown itself. During full lockdown, morning electricity usage shifted to later in the day, decreasing at 6 a.m. and increasing at midday. These changes in energy were echoed in water usage, with a 17% increase and a one-hour delay in peak morning usage. Changes were consistent with people getting up later, spending more time at home and washing more during full lockdown. Evidence for these changes was also observed in later lockdowns, but not between lockdowns. Our findings suggest more compliance with an enforced stay-at-home message than with advice. We discuss implications for socioeconomically disadvantaged households given the indication of inability to achieve increased energy needs during the pandemic.

Consequently, researchers interested in such competence have increasingly analyzed the study-abroad context to gauge learners’ ability to approximate local norms following a stay abroad, due to the quality and quantity of input to which learners may gain access (Lafford. 2006. Nevertheless, the present study is the first to examine native or learner variation between imperative (e. g. ven ‘come’) and optative Spanish commands (e. g. que vengas ‘come’). We first performed a corpus analysis to determine the linguistic factors to manipulate in a contextualized task, which elicited commands from learners before and after four weeks abroad in Alcalá de Henares, Spain. Their overall rates of selection and predictive factors were compared to local native speakers (NSs) and a control group of at-home learners.Results revealed that the abroad learners more closely approached NS rates of selection following the stay abroad. Nonetheless, for both learner groups conditioning by independent variables only partially approximated the NS system, which was more complex than previously suggested.

Beim Vibrationsgleitschleifen wird der Werkstoffabtrag maßgeblich durch die vorherrschenden Kontaktkräfte zwischen dem Werkstück und den Schleifkörpern bestimmt. Dieser Fachartikel stellt ein Messsystem vor, mit dem die messtechnische Erfassung der Kontaktkräfte beim ungeführten Vibrationsgleitschleifen möglich ist. Ein Alleinstellungsmerkmal ist dabei die vollständig kabellose Ausführung des Messsystems. Somit wurden die Messergebnisse nicht durch Kabel beeinflusst, die üblicherweise für die Energieversorgung und Datenübertragung notwendig sind. Mithilfe dieses Messsystems wurde der Einfluss folgender Prozesseingangsgrößen systematisch untersucht: Schleifkörpergröße, Unwuchtmotordrehzahl, Versatzwinkel der Unwuchtgewichte sowie die Masse des unteren und oberen Unwuchtgewichts auf die Kontaktkräfte.   In vibratory finishing the material removal is influenced by the contact forces between work piece and media. In this paper a measurement system is presented which is able to measure contact forces between work piece and media in unguided vibratory finishing. The unique feature of the measurement system is its completely wireless construction so that the measurement results are not influenced by wires of the force sensor system including the electrical power supply and the data logging. By means of this measurement system, contact forces can be measured in unguided vibratory finishing processes for the first time. Furthermore, the influence of media size and adjustment of the unbalance motor like revolution speed, phase angle and mass distribution between the upper and the lower eccentric weight on the contact forces was investigated.

Abstract. Surface water quality monitoring (SWQM) provides essential information for water environmental protection. However, SWQM is costly and limited in terms of equipment and sites. The global popularity of social media and intelligent mobile devices with GPS and photography functions allows citizens to monitor surface water quality. This study aims to propose a method for SWQM using social media platforms. Specifically, a WeChat-based application platform is built to collect water quality reports from volunteers, which have been proven valuable for water quality monitoring. The methods for data screening and volunteer recruitment are discussed based on the collected reports. The proposed methods provide a framework for collecting water quality data from citizens and offer a primary foundation for big data analysis in future research.

The rise of data science in biology stimulates interdisciplinary collaborations to address fundamental questions. Here, we report the outcome of the first SINFONIA symposium focused on revealing the mechanisms governing plant reproductive development across biological scales. The intricate and dynamic target networks of known regulators of flower development remain poorly understood. To analyze development from the genome to the final floral organ morphology, high-resolution data that capture spatiotemporal regulatory activities are necessary and require advanced computational methods for analysis and modeling. Moreover, frameworks to share data, practices and approaches that facilitate the combination of varied expertise to advance the field are called for. Training young researchers in interdisciplinary approaches and science communication offers the opportunity to establish a collaborative mindset to shape future research.

Abstract. The rewetting of dry soils and the thawing of frozen soils are short-term, transitional phenomena in terms of hydrology and the thermodynamics of soil systems. The impact of these short-term phenomena on larger scale ecosystem fluxes has only recently been fully appreciated, and a growing number of studies show that these events affect various biogeochemical processes including fluxes of soil gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), ammonia (NH3) and nitric oxide (NO). Global climate models predict that future climatic change is likely to alter the frequency and intensity of drying-rewetting events and thawing of frozen soils, highlighting the importance of understanding how rewetting and thawing will influence soil gas fluxes. Here we summarize findings in a new database based on 338 studies conducted from 1956 to 2010, and highlight open research questions. The database revealed conflicting results following rewetting and thawing in various terrestrial ecosystems, ranging from large increases in gas fluxes to non-significant changes. An analysis of published field studies (n = 142) showed that after rewetting or thawing, CO2, CH4, N2O, NO and NH3 fluxes increase from pre-event fluxes following a power function, with no significant differenced among gases. We discuss possible mechanisms and controls that regulate flux responses, and note that a high temporal resolution of flux measurements is critical to capture rapid changes in gas fluxes after these soil perturbations. Finally, we propose that future studies should investigate the interactions between biological (i.e. microbial community and gas production) and physical (i.e. flux, diffusion, dissolution) changes in soil gas fluxes, and explore synergistic experimental and modelling approaches.
