1.SummaryAll approaches to biodiversity monitoring have inherent biases in the taxa captured, yet, as environments, sampling goals, and conventions vary, it is not uncommon for sampling approaches to be customized to reflect the study objectives, optimizing findings to be locally relevant but at the cost of transferability. Here, we developed a calibration study to directly examine how researcher trap choice affects observations made in insect biodiversity sampling. Sampling efficiency of four types of traps: pitfalls, yellow ramp traps, a novel jar ramp trap, and yellow sticky cards, were compared with respect to an array of biodiversity metrics associated with the arthropods they captured. We found that trapping efficiency and functional groups of arthropods (flying versus ground-crawling) varied by trap type. Pitfalls and jar ramp traps performed similarly for all biodiversity metrics measured, suggesting that jar ramp traps provide a more comparable measurement of ground-crawling arthropod communities to pitfall sampling than the yellow ramp traps and should be considered when pitfall sampling cannot be used. This study illustrates the implications for biodiversity sampling of arthropods in environments with physical constraints on trapping, and the importance of directly comparing adapted methods to established sampling protocol. Future biodiversity monitoring schemes should conduct calibration experiments to provide important information on performance and potential limitations of sampling methodology.

The concept of a “flow network”—a set of nodes and links which carries one or more flows—unites many different disciplines, including pipe flow, fluid flow, electrical, chemical reaction, ecological, epidemiological, neurological, communications, transportation, financial, economic and human social networks. This Feature Paper presents a generalized maximum entropy framework to infer the state of a flow network, including its flow rates and other properties, in probabilistic form. In this method, the network uncertainty is represented by a joint probability function over its unknowns, subject to all that is known. This gives a relative entropy function which is maximized, subject to the constraints, to determine the most probable or most representative state of the network. The constraints can include “observable” constraints on various parameters, “physical” constraints such as conservation laws and frictional properties, and “graphical” constraints arising from uncertainty in the network structure itself. Since the method is probabilistic, it enables the prediction of network properties when there is insufficient information to obtain a deterministic solution. The derived framework can incorporate nonlinear constraints or nonlinear interdependencies between variables, at the cost of requiring numerical solution. The theoretical foundations of the method are first presented, followed by its application to a variety of flow networks.

Commonly used commercial simulation software SYSNOISE and ANSYS is run on a single machine (can not directly run on parallel machine) when use the finite element and boundary element to simulate muffler effect, and it will take more than ten days, sometimes even twenty days to work out an exact solution as the large amount of numerical simulation. Use a high performance parallel machine which was built by 32 commercial computers and transform the finite element and boundary element simulation software into a program that can running under the MPI (message passing interface) parallel environment in order to reduce the cost of numerical simulation. The relevant data worked out from the simulation experiment demonstrate that the result effect of the numerical simulation is well. And the computing speed of the high performance parallel machine is 25 ~ 30 times a microcomputer.

The development of computer-generated synthetic environments, also calleddistributed virtual environments, for military simulation relies heavily upon computer-generated actors (CGAs) to provide accurate behaviors at reasonable cost so that the synthetic environments are useful, affordable, complex, and realistic. Unfortunately, the pace of synthetic environment development and the level of desired CGA performance continue to rise at a much faster rate than CGA capability improvements. This insatiable demand for realism in CGAs for synthetic environments arises from the growing understanding of the significant role that modeling and simulation can play in a variety of venues. These uses include training, analysis, procurement decisions, mission rehearsal, doctrine development, force-level and task-level training, information assurance, cyberwarfare, force structure analysis, sustainability analysis, life cycle costs analysis, material management, infrastructure analysis, and many others. In these and other uses of military synthetic environments, computer-generated actors play a central role because they have the potential to increase the realism of the environment while also reducing the cost of operating the environment. The progress made in addressing the technical challenges that must be overcome to realize effective and realistic CGAs for military simulation environments and the technical areas that should be the focus of future work are the subject of this series of papers, which survey the technologies and progress made in the construction and use of CGAs. In this, the first installment in the series of three papers, we introduce the topic of computer-generated actors and issues related to their performance and fidelity and other background information for this research area as related to military simulation. We also discuss CGA reasoning system techniques and architectures.

Abstract Dairy farm margin has continued to be a challenge for the dairy industry. Several years of challenging milk prices with limited relief from high feed costs and increasing production cost have continued to erode the net margin of US dairy farms. As dairy producers continue to operate in a challenging economic environment, discoveries are being made in various farm efficiencies to improve farm margin. Increased management intensity on all aspects of the dairy farm is resulting in the discover of and improvement of many individual efficiency factors. Key areas of economic efficiency include feed, animal reproduction, replacement animals, labor and resource allocation. Often the answer to improved efficiency involves more than just reduced production cost, but also in the improvement of production to reduce the cost per unit of milk produced. Identifying and focusing on the important factors that can improve overall farm efficiency will enable producers to weather the economic challenges. For dairy producers, one of the complications is the biology of the dairy cow and understanding how to utilize the biology correctly for improved efficiency of milk production. Improved efficiency of milk production requires attention to details in many areas of the dairy. Identifying the correct areas of deficiencies, establishing corrective plans of action and then careful evaluation of the impact of changes are all key to the overall success of improving dairy farm margins and efficiencies.

Gula semut adalah produk inovatif dari pengolahan nira kelapa dalam bentuk bubuk atau butiran bewarna kuning sampai cokelat. Sebanyak 433.820 kg produksi gula semut dibuat di Desa Hargotirto. Penelitian bertujuan untuk menganalisis pendapatan usaha, pola saluran pemasaran, biaya, keuntungan, marjin pemasaran, dan efisiensi pemasaran secara ekonomi masing-masing saluran pemasaran di Desa Hargotirto. Metode dasar yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif analisis. Metode penentuan lokasi secara <em>purposive</em> di Desa Hargotirto, Kecamatan Kokap, Kabupaten Kulon Progo. Metode pengambilan responden secara random dengan teknik undian sejumlah 93 responden. Pengambilan responden saluran pemasaran dengan <em>snowball sampling</em>. Analisis data yang digunakan dalam menghitung analisis usaha dan pemasaran untuk mengetahui biaya, penerimaan, pendapatan usaha, biaya pemasaran, keuntungan pemasaran, dan marjin pemasaran. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan rata-rata penerimaan sebesar Rp51.366,22, biaya total sebesar Rp25.401,16, danrata-rata pendapatan sebesar Rp25.959,05. Terdapat tiga pola saluran pemasaran di Desa Hargotirto. Total biaya pemasaran masing-masing saluran pemasaran yaitu Rp5.845,30, Rp5.374,72, dan Rp3.407,73. Total keuntungan pemasaran masing-masing saluran pemasaran yaitu Rp7.640,39, Rp7.343,56, dan sebesar Rp9.960,95. Total marjin pemasaran pada masing-masing saluran yaitu Rp6.636,36, Rp5.000,00, dan Rp4.849,91. The optimization problem for multistage machining systems has been investigated. Due to uneven time requirements at different stages in manufacturing, there could be idle times at various stations. It may be advantageous to reduce the values of machining parameters in order to reduce the cost at stations that require less machining time. However, optimization techniques available through the literature do not effectively utilize the idle time for the different stations generated during the balancing of the system. Proposed in this paper is an optimization method which utilizes the idle time to the full extent at all machining stations, with the intention of improving tool life and thus achieving cost reduction. The mathematical analysis considers the optimization of the production cost with an equality constraint of zero idle time for the stations with idle time. Physical constraints regarding the cutting parameters, force, power, surface finish, etc., as they arise in different operations, are also considered. The aforementioned problem has been theoretically analyzed and a computational algorithm developed. The advantages and effectiveness of the proposed approach are finally established through an example.

This chapter takes a look at a sermon by Sabato Morais. Its structure is fairly straightforward. An introductory section focuses on what may appear to be a relatively minor issue but was apparently one that Morais considered to be of symbolic significance: the wording of the presidential proclamation of the national fast-day (made in response to a request by the Senate, possibly in response to the Southern day of prayer on 27 March). The body of the sermon presents two major themes. The first is introduced by the celebrated verses from the fifty-eighth chapter of the Book of Isaiah in which the prophet, speaking in God's behalf, castigates the people for the insincerity of their observance of a day of fasting and prayer. The chapter then turns to the second major theme: the repudiation of a dishonourable, ignominious peace that would come at the cost of dissolution of the American body politic.

This chapter discusses value added tax (VAT) in the UK. VAT is charged on supplies of goods and services made in the UK. Where a person makes taxable supplies in excess of a set limit in any one-year period, he must register with Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC). He must then account to HMRC for VAT on all taxable supplies made. The total amount payable may be reduced by the amount of VAT paid on certain taxable supplies made to him. The liability to pay VAT to HMRC rests on suppliers of goods and services. However, the cost of the tax is actually borne by suppliers’ customers who are charged VAT on the goods and services they purchase. VAT is charged in the UK under the Value Added Tax Act (VATA) 1994.

Traditionally, probate lawyers have been reluctant, when challenging wills, to allege misconduct and the leading case of White v. Nye has caused general confusion by attempting to disguise a plea of fraud as though it were a plea of lack of knowledge and approval.
