A field description of spin-density-wave (SDW) in a quasi-two-dimensional metal with open Fermi surface in magnetic field, is proposed. The SDW transition temperature, T c (H), and the Hall conductivity σxy, are calculated. The dependence T c (H) is found to be different from that of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer model, in particular, a threshold field, H c , found its natural explanation. It is proved that the quantized Hall conductivity arises from the chiral anomaly terms in the effective action provided there is pinning of chemical potential in the gap of extended states.

We discuss how a magnetic field can affect the equation of state of a many-particle neutron system. We show that, due to the anisotropy in the pressures, the pressure transverse to the magnetic field direction increases with the magnetic field, while the one along the field direction decreases. We also show that in this medium there exists a significant negative field-dependent contribution associated with the vacuum pressure. This negative pressure demands a neutron density sufficiently high (corresponding to a baryonic chemical potential of μ = 2.25 GeV) to produce the necessary positive matter pressure that can compensate for the gravitational pull. The decrease of the parallel pressure with the field limits the maximum magnetic field to a value of the order of 10 18 G, where the pressure decays to zero. We show that the combination of all these effects produces an insignificant variation of the system equation of state. We also found that this neutron system exhibits paramagnetic behavior expressed by the Curie’s law in the high-temperature regime. The reported results may be of interest for the astrophysics of compact objects such as magnetars, which are endowed with substantial magnetic fields.

At zero temperature and finite chemical potential, the gap equation of cold dense quark matter under external magnetic field is studied with NJL model in the mean-field approximation. By introducing new methods, it is found that the Nambu phase has sophisticated structures which have not been studied before. As a consequence, the phase diagram is expanded and divided into five areas, in each area the condensate has unique behaviors with chemical potential varying. Furthermore, the expanded phase diagram is used to predict the order of phase transition between the Nambu phase and the Wigner phase, it can also be used to explain the relations of dynamical mass and chemical potential. Meanwhile, the metastable states and cascade effect of dynamical mass are studied in this paper.

In the context of the theory of generalized thermoelastic diffusion, a two-dimensional generalized electromagnetothermoelastic problem with diffusion for a rotating half-space is investigated. The rotating half-space is placed in an external magnetic field with constant intensity and its bounding surface is subjected to a thermal shock and a chemical potential shock. The problem is formulated based on finite element method and the derived finite element equations are solved directly in time domain. The nondimensional temperature, displacement, stress, chemical potential, concentration, and induced magnetic field are obtained and illustrated graphically. The results show that all the considered variables have a nonzero value only in a bounded region and vanish identically outside this region, which fully demonstrates the nature of the finite speeds of thermoelastic wave and diffusive wave.

Change of the chemical potential of electrons in a GaAs-AlxGa1−xAs heterojunction was measured in magnetic fields up to 6.5 T at several temperatures from 2.17 to 12.3 K. A thermodynamic equation of state of two-dimensional electron gas well describes the experimental results.
