Purpose The purpose of this paper is to gain a better understanding of the antecedents of the quality of graduates’ jobs when they enter the job market after university graduation. Design/methodology/approach Survey data collected from 173 Spanish bachelor and master’s degree university graduates at two time points (two months before and six months after graduation, approximately) were analyzed by means of path analysis. Findings A moderated mediation model was tested, where the relationship between the horizontal fit (HF) between the university degree subject and the student’s job and the quality of the graduate’s job after graduation is mediated by self-perceived employability and moderated by the time devoted to a student job. Results showed that the relationship between HF and job quality was partially mediated by self-perceived employability. However, contrary to the proposed hypothesis, this relationship did not depend on the time devoted to a student job. Originality/value This study contributes to improving the understanding about how and why university students’ work experience is related to the quality of their jobs as fresh graduates.

We investigated whether a set of indicators of the employability dimensions proposed by Fugate, Kinicki, and Asforth (i.e., career identity, personal adaptability, and human and social capital) are related to university graduates’ employment status and five indicators of the quality of their jobs (pay, hierarchical level, vertical and horizontal match, and job satisfaction). We analyzed a representative sample of university graduates ( N = 7,881) from the population of graduates who obtained their degree from the University of Valencia in the period 2006–2010. The results showed that indicators of human and social capital were related to employment status, whereas indicators of human and social capital and career identity were related to distinct job quality indicators. These results support the validity of the conceptual model proposed by Fugate et al. to investigate employability in samples of university graduates.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the impact of three determinants of organizational identification (OID) on employee performance (EP) in the context of private business institutions. Design/methodology/approach A sample of 175 permanent faculty members from four top universities in Karachi, Pakistan, was interviewed using a five-point Likert scale questionnaire. The data were inserted in SPSS 22 and SmartPLS v 3.2 for performing the analysis. Findings Results of the study showed a significant effect in perceived supervisor support on OID; OID; job satisfaction and EP; and mediating relationship. Conversely, an insignificant effect was observed in workplace incivility. Research limitations/implications It is highly recommended that organizations work on the areas that lead to enhancing their employees’ performance. Also, human resource should create a healthy culture that promotes initiatives, open-door policies and discourages power distance. Lastly, one of the key responsibilities of management is to strengthen their OID because employees are more likely to identify with their supervisors if they invest in the organizations they work for. Practical implications This study will help strengthen the relationship between supervisors and university employees. It will guide the supervisors to acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of their subordinates and develop recreational policies and employee engagement activities. In addition, it will help develop a conducive environment and enhance the quality of education in the university and the society. Originality/value Understanding the determinants of OID on EP in the educational context is very important as it enhances the quality of EP and the overall quality of education of the institution.

The actuality of the problem increases once with the advantages that the university obtains them by applying mechanisms of evidence of the former students’ employability. We have proposed an experimental-practical research, which addresses the problem of the relationship between the educational offer of the university and the labour market, aiming to improve the quality of the educational process by connecting it to social requirements.

PurposeBased on a dyadic perspective, the purpose of this paper is to include the contributions of employee and customer in a service process and to examine the underlying mechanism of customer organization socialization on service performance.Design/methodology/approachThe authors used a unique survey data pertaining to the service industry. The authors collected their data from multiple sources (customers, front-line employees and these employees' managers) in the divisions of a large service organization – Ping An Insurance (Group) Company of China. The authors adopted hierarchical regression moderated path analysis approach to examine our moderated mediation model.FindingsThe authors find that both the quality of customer service and the quality of employee service play as moderators in the relationship between customer organization socialization and service performance. And quality of customer service moderates the relationship between customer organization socialization and quality of employee service.Originality/valueThe literature has focused primarily on service performance improvement based on the dyadic perspective of customer and employee. The research develops a moderated mediation model and contributes to the literature by empirically examining customer organization socialization.

Purpose Guided by social resource theory, this study aims to examine the influence of conflict (i.e. task and relationship) on performance. The authors investigated whether job engagement mediates this relationship and whether social network quality moderates the relationship between conflict, job engagement and performance. Design/methodology/approach The authors built and tested a moderated mediation model, using data from 217 graduate students. Findings Results showed that job engagement operates as a mediating mechanism between task conflict and performance. The authors also found that the indirect effect of job engagement depended upon the quality of the social networks. When the quality of the social network was high, both the task and relationship conflict did not negatively influence the association between job engagement and performance. Research limitations/implications These findings provide new insights into how social embeddedness in the form of social network quality can create a social context in which conflict works out less detrimental. Practical implications Given that employees are interdependent and coworkers are likely to differ in their personal values and opinions, the authors conclude that managers should facilitate the development of meaningful relationships at work. Originality/value Whereas prior research has found conflict (i.e. task and relationship) to negatively associate with performance, the authors show that social networks do affect the strength of the relationship between conflict (i.e. task and relationship) and performance.

Introduction: Labor insertion for young people is probably more difficult nowadays than it was a few decades ago in all productive sectors and in academic education. A few decades ago, having a university degree was a guarantee of quick labor insertion, but nowadays, although having a university degree may somewhat alleviate the unemployment rate, it is still high  among recent university graduates. In this paper, we show the differential profile of the companies who do hire recent graduates as compared to those who do not.Methodology: We worked with a sample of 1,325 employers from the business world of Catalonia, who were administered the questionnaire prepared adhoc during 2014. Results: The main results show that the more workers a company has, the higher the probability that they will hire recent graduates. Companies with a high percentage of graduated  workers are more likely to hire recent graduates. Companies who are willing to work with Agency for the Quality of the University System of Catalonia hire more than those who are not. And finally, the service sector hires more than construction or industry.Conclusions: In the present study we have shown a differential pattern between the companies that hire recent graduates or not, a very important aspect because this could help define university policies to facilitate the transition to the labor market.

Purpose Perceived employability (PE) is considered as a significant psychological resource that aids individuals in tackling the complex career snags he/she faces. The purpose of this study is to develop and empirically test a theoretical model that explains how PE affects two types of job search behaviour (JSB) by bringing in job search learning goal orientation (JSLGO) as mediator and work experience as a moderator. The model is conceptualised in the backdrop of self-regulation theory and conservation of resource theory. Design/methodology/approach Using a cross-sectional study of 319 management graduates, the authors examined the effect of JSLGO and PE on both active and preparatory job search of graduates. Structural equation modelling (SEM) using IBM-AMOS was conducted on the cross-sectional data collected from management graduates in India. Findings An empirical analysis using SEM unravelled that JSLGO mediated the relationship between preparatory job search and PE but did not intervene in the relationship between active job search and PE. The study also looked into the moderating role of work experience and it was found to be a significant moderator in the PE and job search – active relationship. Practical implications Work experience helps students in active job search stage which can lead to quick employment gains. Real job experience could be gained through work-integrated learning and on the job training, as they will enhance the exposure of students to real-life work situations. Higher levels of JSLGO indicate a more strategic approach and aiming a quality career. Learning goal orientation training should be embedded in the curriculum, as management education is all about preparing students for the world of work. Originality/value The current research has uniquely contributed to the limited literature on the importance of developing PE amongst management graduates and its consequence on job search. The study makes an important contribution to the theory and practices on job search by enhancing our understanding of the mechanism that governs PE and JSB relationship through goal orientation.

Este artículo analiza la calidad de la inserción de los graduados catalanes en situación de ocupación tres años después de obtener el título universitario. La inserción se estudia a partir de los indicadores subjetivos del término desde la perspectiva de la equidad. Se ha indagado sobre la satisfacción del egresado con el trabajo, la valoración que hacen de las competencias adquiridas en la universidad y su utilidad en el mercado laboral, y si perciben equilibrio entre la formación y el desempeño laboral. Se ha optado por una metodología cuantitativa, analizando la Encuesta de Inserción Laboral de Graduados Universitarios de la Agència per a la Qualitat del Sistema Universitari de Catalunya (AQU) para los años 2014 y 2017. Se trata de una muestra estratificada por titulación en la que han participado 17.337 y 15.563 respectivamente. Los resultados manifiestan que las características estructurales de los titulados universitarios, especialmente ser mujer, y educativas, como tener buenas notas y haber estudiado un grado que no sea del área de Humanidades, contribuyen a configurar su percepción más positiva sobre la transición al mercado laboral en términos de indicadores subjetivos de inserción. El análisis comparado entre las dos ediciones evidencia el efecto de la crisis económica y los indicios de recuperación, muy pronunciada en el caso del área de Ing. y Arquitectura. Finalmente, Bolonia y el aprendizaje por competencias han dado sus frutos, pese a que será necesario seguir trabajando en políticas orientadas al seguimiento y acompañamiento del estudiante en la transición al trabajo. This article analyses the quality of access to the labour market for Catalan graduates three years after obtaining a university degree. The labour integration process is studied on the basis of subjective indicators of the term from an equity perspective. For this purpose, job satisfaction has been investigated, as well as the assessment of the skills acquired at university and their usefulness in the labour market, and whether students perceive a balance between training and job performance. A quantitative methodology has been chosen, working with secondary data from the Agència per a la Qualitat del Sistema Universitari de Catalunya (AQU) for the years 2014 and 2017. The results show that the structural characteristics of the university graduates, especially being women, and educational characteristics, such as having good grades and having studied a degree that does not belong to the area of Humanities, contribute to configuring a more positive perception of the transition to the labour market. The comparative analysis between the two editions evidences the effect of the economic crisis and the signs of recovery, very pronounced in the case of the area of Engineering and Architecture. Finally, the Bologna reform and competence-based learning have given rewards, even though it will be necessary to continue working on policies aimed at monitoring and guiding student in the process of transition to the labour market.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship of two distinct variants of dispositional shame (internal and external shame) with collaborative, purpose-driven aspects of the patient–provider relationship (working alliance) and patient satisfaction. The aim of this research was to conduct a preliminary investigation into the relevance of dispositional shame in a general healthcare population. Design/methodology/approach In total, 127 community members (mean age 25.9 years) who reported that they had regularly seen a GP over the past year were recruited at an Australian university. Participants were asked to reflect on their relationship with their GP, and completed instruments assessing various domains of shame, as well as working alliance and patient satisfaction. Findings Non-parametric correlations were examined to determine the direction and strength of relationships, as well as conducting mediation analyses where applicable. Small, negative correlations were evident between external shame and working alliance. Both external and internal shame measures were also negatively correlated with patient satisfaction. Finally, the relationship of external shame to patient satisfaction was partially mediated by working alliance. Practical implications Both the reported quality of patient–provider working alliance, and level of patient satisfaction are related to levels of dispositional shame in patients, and working alliance may act as a mediator for this relationship. Originality/value The findings from this preliminary study suggest that internal and external shame are important factors to consider in the provision of medical care to maximise the quality of patient experience and working alliance.
