Understanding barriers and enablers to training in humanitarian organizations: a SAP-LAP framework

Purpose This study aims to outline a practice-based theoretical model to identify barriers and enablers to training in humanitarian organizations toward improving the efficiency of humanitarian organizations. Design/methodology/approach The situation actor process-learning action performance (SAP-LAP) model has been applied to understand the barriers and enablers to training in humanitarian organizations. The synthesis of SAP leads to LAP, which helps in identifying bottlenecks of training through analysis of present situations and processes. Then, suggested courses of action for enhancing performance are laid down. The data have been collected through discussions with five practitioners involved in past relief operations in India. Findings In all, five barriers and six enablers were uncovered during discussions with practitioners illustrating the complexity involved in training in humanitarian organizations. The results suggest the need for more effective strategic planning much before actual training starts, particularly in the current situation where resources are limited in terms of time, capital and manpower. Research limitations/implications The SAP-LAP model needs further validation through empirical data. Practical implications This study contributes to existing body of literature and helps practitioners by providing a better understanding of barriers and enablers to training in humanitarian organizations. Originality/value This study is the first of its kind that integrates the views of practitioners in identifying barriers and enablers to training in humanitarian organizations toward improving the efficiency of humanitarian organizations.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to first articulate and then illustrate a descriptive theoretical model of documentation (i.e. document creation) suitable for analysis of the experiential, first-person perspective. Design/methodology/approach Three models of documentation in the literature are presented and synthesized into a new model. This model is then used to understand the findings from a phenomenology-of-practice study of the work of seven visual artists as they each created a self-portrait, understood here as a form of documentation. Findings A number of themes are found to express the first-person experience of art-making in these examples, including communicating, memories, reference materials, taking breaks and stepping back. The themes are discussed with an eye toward articulating what is shared and unique in these experiences. Finally, the themes are mapped successfully to the theoretical model. Research limitations/implications The study involved artists creating self-portraits, and further research will be required to determine if the thematic findings are unique to self-portraiture or apply as well to art-making, to documentation generally, etc. Still, the theoretical model developed here seems useful for analyzing documentation experiences. Practical implications As many activities and tasks in contemporary life can be conceptualized as documentation, this model provides a valuable analytical tool for better understanding those experiences. This can ground education and management decisions for those involved. Originality/value This paper makes conceptual and empirical contributions to document theory and the study of the information behavior of artists, particularly furthering discussions of information and document experience.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the relationship between inclusive leadership (IL) and organizational inclusion (OI) in literature and explores the contribution of IL and OI in human resources development (HRD). Design/methodology/approach The systematic literature review was undertaken from peer-reviewed journals. In total, 68 articles were critically analyzed to be included in the review highlighting the relationship between IL and OI. Findings The paper provides insights into leader behaviors that foster IL and how it differs from other styles of leadership. The paper also proposes a theoretical model to show the relationship between IL and OI. Practical implications The study will facilitate creating awareness in practitioners and academicians who think inclusion is mostly concerned with disabled learners, which is misleading. The paper will help the concerned stakeholders to formulate HRD practices to foster an inclusive culture at work. Originality/value The paper explores an area less researched and is among the few review papers investigating through the relationship between IL and OI and how they impact HRD practices in an organizational set-up.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to show how collaborative information technology (IT) tools and a crowdsourcing model can be leveraged for the purpose of strategic planning. To achieve this objective, a formal method of open strategic planning (OSP) is proposed. Design/methodology/approach Based on a review of the literature a set of activities, stakeholders, and governing rules are identified in the form of an OSP method. The proposed planning method is implemented in a case study of strategic planning in an Australian university. Observations by the research team, and archival records were used to ascertain the relevance of the used method. Findings A method for OSP is presented and assessed. The method contains four phases: pre-planning, idea submission, idea refinement, and plan development. These phases cover the activities required from conceptualization to preparing and publishing the strategic plan. The findings clarify how the principles of OSP helped the organization to include more stakeholders and provided the opportunity to make the planning process transparent through use of a collaborative IT tool. Practical implications The study provides managers and planning consultants with detailed guidelines to implement the concept of open strategy. Originality/value This study is among the few to propose a method for OSP based on empirical research. The study also shows how collaborative IT tools can be used for high-level organizational tasks such as strategic planning.

Purpose In the past two decades, the growth in the number and severity of disasters causes a rapid increase in the presence of NGOs for more effective response and efficient management of disasters. The NGOs must spend part of their resources on attracting funds to fulfill their humanitarian goals. However, limited number of donors and received contributions leads to a competition among NGOs for fundraising. Therefore, managing the relationship between these organizations and donors is very important. This paper aims to examine the competitive and coopetitive behavior of NGOs to model the interaction. Design/methodology/approach To achieve this purpose, by using game theory, two mathematical programing models are presented to examine the two inter-organizational interactions among NGOs. Findings The results show that if the NGOs work together, all the organizations, donors and affected people will benefit, and the accrued disaster will be managed more efficiently. Practical implications The expressed benefits of coopetition of NGOs can be an incentive for them to work together to manage disasters effectively. Originality/value To the best of authors’ knowledge, no research has considered the impact of the coopetition of NGOs in achieving their social mission successfully. Therefore, this paper can be seen as a valuable resource in this field.

Purpose The objective of this research is to know the degree of influence that strategic planning (SP) exerts on the tangible and intangible results of business microenterprises in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. Design/methodology/approach The methodological design was quantitative, explanatory, observational and cross-sectional, where a sample of 407 young leaders of microenterprises from the state of Guanajuato, Mexico, was obtained. To evaluate hypotheses, a structural equation model (SEM) was developed. Regarding the goodness and adjustment indices of the SEM, they were absolutely acceptable. Findings The results obtained through Pearson’s correlation show that there is a positive and significant relationship between SP and the tangible and intangible results of microenterprises. In addition, through the results obtained with the SEM model, it is statistically demonstrated that SP positively and significantly influences the tangible and intangible results of microenterprises in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. Research limitations/implications In this research, only SP was valued as a variable that intervenes in the process of achieving tangible and intangible results to achieve the business objectives of entrepreneurial microenterprises in the state of Guanajuato. It is essential to point out that other variables that intervene in the process must be considered to generate tangible and intangible results. It is recommended to carry out further research under these variables to identify strategies for improving entrepreneurial microenterprises for their growth, sustainability and rapid positioning in a highly competitive market. Practical implications SP represents one of the tools to achieve the success of microenterprises through tangible and intangible results. However, microenterprises show a need to involve the use and application of SP to define clear indicators that contribute to obtaining satisfactory tangible and intangible results. Originality/value The findings are relevant and of great value, because there is currently not enough research that focuses on the variables analyzed, in this sense, SP and the tangible and intangible results of young entrepreneurial leaders of microenterprises in the Mexican context. The limitations of this study lie in the low participation and interest of young microenterprise entrepreneurs in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to compare methods of working with pedagogical capital in teacher and mentor education. The authors make an account of the development of the concept of pedagogical capital and relate it to the theoretical context of practice theory. Empirical data will substantiate the theoretical discussion of teachers ' pedagogical capital. Design/methodology/approach – Comparative analyses of the authors ' research and empirical data were undertaken. Findings – Three dimensions of pedagogical capital have been identified: an experience content dimension, an analysis dimension and an acting dimension. Research limitations/implications – The authors find potential in using and further developing the concept of pedagogical capital in its various dimensions and in relation to other similar concepts. Practical implications – The authors ' methods could be used for school development purposes as well as in teacher education. Social implications – The aim of the paper is to underline the value of the contributions people can make to society as a whole and as teachers in school, in particular. The recognition of the ability to analyse and contribute is the essence of this work. Originality/value – The value of the paper is the introduction and development of pedagogical capital in an international context. The value is also the common analyses of educational work in Sweden and Norway.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to outline three analytic tools utilized in the analysis and interpretation of LibQUAL+™ quantitative data.Design/methodology/approachD‐M scores, value rankings, and split‐file cross‐tabulations were used to assess the service items from the 2004 LibQUAL+™ quantitative data. The D‐M score is methodologically superior to other methods used in that it is a single score that takes into account all three LibQUAL+™ perception/expectation scores as dictated by the theoretical model LibQUAL+™ is based upon.FindingsThe paper finds that these tools provide a way to more easily utilize LibQUAL+™ results in taking actions and developing strategic plans designed to improve patrons' perceptions of service quality. These tools also allow for the continuous evaluation of implemented plans.Practical implicationsThe paper discusses how these tools helped produce findings that were informative and in a format that decision makers could easily comprehend and utilize.Originality/valueThis paper outlines three approaches and offers practical recommendation of how to analyze and interpret LibQUAL+™ quantitative data as well as present findings to strategic stakeholders.
