The virtual human resource development (VHRD) approach: an integrative literature review

Purpose Given the growing popularity of virtual human resources development (VHRD) in organizations and among human resource development (HRD) professionals, it is highly essential to deeply examine the nature and scope of the affective dimensions of the VHRD approach. Over the past decade, VHRD has become an important part of the HRD process. Design/methodology/approach The present study used an integrative literature review to investigate the nature of VHRD in the literature, present a descriptive analysis of the literature and categorize the existing VHRD research. Findings The results indicated three major themes, namely, VHRD and socialization, VHRD and learning and VHRD and the psychological characteristics of the work environment. In addition, a new conceptual model was developed based on the findings. Research limitations/implications This study has reviewed the main concepts of VHRD. The potential actions which HRD researchers can take to address the identified challenges are discussed. Originality/value This integrative literature review could provide a roadmap for future research. Based on this model, the VHRD position is within the organizational context and different tools and processes in constant interaction are introduced. Finally, a general view of the VHRD approach was provided, which can help human resources experts deal with a wide range of technologies in the organization.

Contemporary business conditions do not impose only need for adjustment of the organization but also the need for adjustment of employees. Human resources, manifested through individual knowledge, skills, individual qualities and achievements, is the basis of competitive advantage of organizations and the main resource for the survival, the growth and development of modern organizations. Treating employees as a decisive factor for the success of organizations, it follows that their primary duty is to provide, maintain and develop the best people through the wide range of human resource activities. Thus, Human Resource Development, designated as a key activity for achieving the projected goals of the organization, can be defined as a set of systematic and planned activities appointed by an organization to provide its members with the opportunities to learn necessary skills to meet current and future job demands. Employees are increasingly accepting the reality that education becomes their responsibility in order to develop their full working potential and to ensure self employment opportunities. On the other hand, encouraging educational programs, organizations strive not only to meet the business needs for education of employees, but also their interests, creating and developing the climate of continuous learning and dissemination of knowledge in all areas. To what extent will the organization attach importance to certain practices that guide and encourage staff development depends on its current situation, activities, goals and adopted development strategy. Adequate choice, the assignment according to their abilities and affinities, continuous training and education, are generally accepted methods without which the development of employees is not possible. The American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) estimates that U.S. organizations spent $134.1 billion on employee learning and development in 2008, and $125.9 billion in 2009.Human resource managers in large organizations ranked training and development as the most important functional area they had to deal with because HRD programs must respond to job changes and integrate the long-term plans and strategies of the organization to ensure the efficient and effective use of resources. Combining different methods and approaches, and referring to all employees in the organization, training and human resources development become a tools for achieving change and the effects they produce are becoming a far-reaching and strategic.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore recent national human resource development (NHRD) practices in China through a literature review focusing on programs and activities that represent the roles and interactions among the government, industry and universities. Design/methodology/approach To effectively consolidate previous work and conceptualize the recent development of the NHRD practices in China, a semi-narrative literature review was used to explore and analyze NHRD-related functions and activities. Findings Findings from the literature review showed that although the central government still plays a predominant role in China, universities and corporations are increasingly playing a critical role in developing an innovative and skilled workforce. At the regional level, NHRD initiatives in China have been increasingly undertaken by universities, industry and government–industry–university collaborations. The authors also found a disparity between developed and underdeveloped regions in terms of NHRD in China. Research limitations/implications This study used the triple helix model as a framework that provides an insightful lens for researchers to examine how various social entities interact with each other and jointly contribute to NHRD. Further case studies are needed to generate evidence-based knowledge to the NHRD literature. Practical implications A more systematic NHRD leadership structure at both the national and local level is desired to unleash the potential of bottom-up development and active government–industry–university collaboration. To counter regional divergence in NHRD in China, intra- and cross-regional collaborations are helpful in improving resources distribution and workforce development. Originality/value Based on open system theory, this study focused on programs and activities that represent the roles and interactions among the government, industry and university in Chinese NHRD through the lens of the triple helix model. In addition, this study offers a conceptual model of Chinese NHRD to help scholars and practitioners understand the transitional efforts in NHRD.

Purpose This study aims to synthesize the rich knowledge on spiritual intelligence (SI) research within the framework of human resource development (HRD) research. Design/methodology/approach Based on the search of multiple electronic databases authors conducted thematic review of the literature on SI and HRD. Themes associated with SI and HRD are extracted while employing the content analysis technique. Findings Five major themes emerged through the process of content analysis on the body of the reviewed literature. The themes which described the presence of SI-related research within the field of HRD, included: Conceptual connections between SI and HRD; SI Holistic Mechanism; SI and Leadership development, SI measurement tools and, finally, the impact of SI on sustainability. Research limitations/implications The inclusion and exclusion criteria are that the search for this review has been limited to peer-reviewed journals that are published SI-related articles. This paper excluded all articles on SI that `do not explicitly discuss the valuable role of human resources. The key words used are spiritual intelligence (SI) and HRD. Originality/value This paper offered new-fangled value and insightful understanding on SI and its implications for other areas, more specifically HRD. It suggests that SI is an important component for organizational development. Such interventions nurture the human resources that can lead to better performance as a whole.

Human Resources is something that is very influential for the progress of an institution. Without quality human resources, an institution will not develop and may even experience setbacks. Therefore, every organization must prepare a program that contains activities that can increase the capabilities and professionalism of human resources so that the organization can survive and develop in accordance with the organizational environment. This program is usually referred to as human resource development. Sharia are the laws that govern the relationship between humans and creators and creatures. This study aims to determine how the Islamic perspective on human resource development. This study is a literature review using sharia as an approach, namely examining the problem with books and scientific works. The results of this study indicate that human resource development in the persective of sharia is a development in the form of training in skills, knowledge, behavior and sharia competence.

Approaching a body of literature from a historical perspective is widely acknowledged as essential to conducting a literature review. Methodological guidance for approaching a body of literature from a historical perspective depends on familiarity with works historians have written about the practice of historical research. This article provides some direction by drawing from the best-known work of one distinguished historian, a work which, upon careful reading, outlines some fundamental tasks for the historically-inclined reviewer of a body of literature. An evaluation rubric is presented that facilitates a progressive appraisal of the integration of history within a literature review. Ultimately, the article serves to stimulate the processes of thought, interpretation and rationalization when historically engaging with a body of literature. Numerous examples from the literature on human resource development are identified that illustrate the issues discussed in the article.

The Problem Initial explorations of virtual human resource development (VHRD) were published in the 12(6) issue of Advances, but these articles were only an initial step toward conceptualization. New perspectives on VHRD have developed over the past 4 years, particularly about human resource development’s (HRD) role in the development of new technology. The Solution This article provides a brief overview of existing published literature on VHRD, offers new conceptualizations of HRD’s role with technology development, and introduces the articles in this issue that advance their own new perspectives. This article argues that HRD must adopt new skills and develop explanatory models for growing organizational learning capacity in virtual work. The Stakeholders This article is of interest to practitioners and managers who lead technology projects and work within technology-enabled professional environments, as well as scholars interested in studying VHRD.

The Problem A number of new perspectives of virtual human resource development (VHRD) have been provided in this issue of Advances in Developing Human Resources ( ADHR) that warrant further discussion. As VHRD is still a nascent area of inquiry in HRD, professionals need more explanatory examples and solutions to consider for determining their own role in working with people and technology. The Solution This article offers a synthesis of key constructs of VHRD from the articles in this special issue. Also, it provides a discussion around two different modes of technology development (TD) needed by HRD professionals in the contemporary technology-enabled environment afforded by VHRD. And, the integration of TD in addition to career development, training and development, and organization development is essential to the future of HRD and is discussed herein. The Stakeholders This article targets primarily practitioners interested in VHRD interventions and processes. It encourages the reader to examine the commonalities across the articles in this issue of ADHR and also to consider the new skills required for HRD professionals when seeking to align organizational mission with all levels of the organization.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to get the perspectives of human resource development (HRD) scholars about connections among HRD, corporate social responsibility sand ethics. The authors also sought to discover if HRD academic programs need to have ethics-related courses for their graduate students. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the authors reviewed the literature and interviewed ten HRD scholars who substantially contributed to the field of HRD and have influential publications related to ethics or corporate social responsibility to find out the relationship between HRD, ethics and corporate social responsibility. A semi-structured interview method was adopted to collect data and purposeful sampling technique was used for analyzing data into identified themes. Findings The results from the interviews were categorized into seven different themes. While some scholars argued that ethics-related discussion needs to be integrated within every course, most scholars stated that ethics can be a required standalone course for HRD graduate programs. Originality/value Despite ongoing consideration of the ethical nature of HRD, little research has been conducted on how ethics and corporate social responsibility are represented in the field of study and practice. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first empirical paper in HRD that collected and analyzed experts’ perspectives in this topic.

GAS (Gemalindo Air Support) Batam. Perumusan masalah, tujuan penelitian ini dan hipotesis pada penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis pengaruh yang positif dan signifikan secara individual antara variabel independen yaitu pengembangan SDM, iklimkerja dan berbagi pengetahuan terhadap variabel dependen yaitu kreativitas SDM di PT. GAS (Gemalindo Air Support) Batam. Pada penelitian ini objek yang diambil adalah karyawan GAS (Gemalindo Air Support) Batam. Sumber data meliputi data primer dan data sekunder. Sampel pada penelitian ini berjumlah 100 responden yang merupakan karyawan PT. GAS (Gemalindo Air Support) Batam melalui teknik nonprobability sampling yaitu dengan tidak menggunakan metode sampling. GAS (Gemalindo Air Support) Batam. In this research object is taken employee GAS (Gemalindo Air Support) Batam. Data sources include primary data and secondary data. The sample in this study amounted to 100 respondents who are employees of PT. GAS (Gemalindo Air Support) Batam through nonprobability sampling technique is not by using the method of sampling. The study aimed to identify the effectiveness of talent management strategies in human resource development at the University of Taibah, And to develop the necessary scientific solutions and recommendations, which can contribute to enhancing the effectiveness of talent management strategies in human resource development. Using the descriptive approach, study sample consisted of 67 leader, the leader of the 95 representing the entire community of the original study, and88member of the faculty members out of 365. The study relied on questionnaire tool, included thirty-eight parts, distributed over four axes, polarization, the discovery, the professional development, and the retention. In addition to an open question. The study found a range of results, which are; The general grade of the effectiveness of talent management strategies in human resources development at the University of Taibah from the perspective of leaders and members of the faculty average, is a mean 3.13.The polarization strategy is the most effective in the talent management in the development of human resources at the University of Taibah, a mean 3.35. The second was professional development with an average (3.17) and third discovery with an average of (3.09) The retention strategy came to be the least strategy in the talent management effectiveness in human resource development at the University of Taibah, a mean 2.93.In light of the results , a number of recommendations and suggestions.
