Purpose The authors consider parallel four-state tandem open queueing network. The queue capacity is infinite. Passenger arrival rate is Poisson distribution and service rate is exponential distribution. The queue is constructed in the form of tandem queue, and each and every queue of tandem queue is single server (M/M/1) queue. In tandem queue, passengers will leave the system once they receive service from both the states. The purpose of this paper is to provide performance analysis for four-state tandem open queue network, and a governing equation is formulated with the help of transition diagram. Using Burke theorem, the authors formulated equation for average number of passenger in the system, average waiting time of passenger in the system, average number of passenger in the queue and average waiting time of passenger in the queue. Design/methodology/approach This paper used Burke’s theorem. Findings In this paper, performance analysis is done for parallel four-state tandem open queueing network and performance measure solved using Burkes theorem formula. K. Sreekanth et al. has done performance analysis for single tandem queue with three states. In this paper, the authors have done performance analysis for two tandem queues parallel with four states. This four-state tandem open queueing network is suitable for real world applications. This paper can extend for more number of service states and multi-server states according to the application, and in such case, the authors have to prove and explain with numerical examples. This analysis is more useful for the applications such as airports, railway stations, bus-stands and banks. Originality/value In this paper, parallel four-state tandem open queueing network and performance measure has been solved using Burke’s theorem formula.

Purpose This study aims to deal with development and performance analysis of high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) thermally sprayed Mo2C-based WC-CoCr (tungsten carbine cobalt chrome) (Co-10% and Cr-4%) cermet coating deposited on the pump impeller steel 316 L. Design/methodology/approach In this work, a study was carried out by modifying the conventional WC-CoCr powder with a small addition of molybdenum carbide (Mo2C). Reinforcement was done by 1–4 wt.% addition of Mo2C feedstocks in WC-CoCr powder by using a jar ball mill process. The design of experiment was implemented for optimization of the percentage of Mo2C feedstock. L16 (4 × 4) orthogonal array was used to design the experiments for erosion output for the input parameters namely velocity, particle size, concentration and Mo2C proportion. Findings Results show that the Mo2C-based WC-CoCr coating provides better microhardness as compared to conventional WC-CoCr coating. The present study also reveals that the deposition of conventional WC-CoCr coating has improved the wear resistance of SS 316 L by 9.98%. However, the slurry erosion performance of conventional WC-CoCr coating was improved as 69.6% by the addition of 3% Mo2C. Practical implications WC-CoCr coatings are universally used for protecting the equipment and machinery from abrasion, erosion and corrosion. So, the 3% Mo2C-based WC-CoCr can be useful in power plants and various industries like mining, chemical, automobile, cementing and food processing industries. Originality/value A new HVOF coating has been developed by the addition of Mo2C feedstock in WC-CoCr powder (Co 10% and Cr 4%) and the percentage of Mo2C feedstock was optimized to improve the tribological behavior of WC-CoCr coating.

PurposeIn this article, we identify various foodservice-related attributes that are important for undergraduate students residing in hostels and avail service from specific foodservice providers. We also investigate the performance of attributes to determine areas where the foodservice providers should maintain a high performance or where improvement is required.Design/methodology/approachWe apply the Kano methodology to design the questionnaire for 24 different attributes. For each attribute, we construct three questions; namely, functional type, dysfunctional type, and performance of the hostel foodservice. We collect a total of 317 responses. We use multiple methods to determine the dominant category. Finally, combining the values of these methods, we study relative positions of the attributes in the importance–performance grid.FindingsBased on the Kano categorization, quality-related attributes are most important, followed by hygiene, comfort, availability, variety, and time, in the descending order. The gender of the respondent plays an important role in categorization of some attributes. Using the importance–performance analysis, we identify the attributes where the foodservice provider should maintain a high performance or where improvement is required. Improvements in some attributes are difficult due to foodservice provider's self-assessment of high performance or high difficulty for improvement.Originality/valueIn this study, we examine the importance of various foodservice attributes among undergraduate residential students. We combine multiple methods of Kano categorization to compute importance values of the attributes. We also investigate the reasons behind the gap between student's and foodservice manager's perception of the performance of these attributes.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to systematically investigate the patient flow and waiting time problems in hospital emergency departments (EDs) from an integrated voice of customer (VOC) and voice of process (VOP) perspective and to propose a new lean framework for ED process.Design/methodology/approachA survey was conducted to better understand patients' perceptions of ED services, lean tools such as process mapping and A3 problem-solving sheets were used to identify hidden process wastes and root-cause analysis was performed to determine the reasons of long waiting time in ED.FindingsThe results indicate that long waiting times in ED are major concerns for patients and affect the quality of ED services. It was revealed that limited bed capacity, unavailability of necessary staff, layout of ED, lack of understanding among patients about the nature of emergency services are main causes of delay. Addressing these issues using lean tools, integrated with the VOC and VOP perspectives can lead to improved patient flow, higher patient satisfaction and improvement in ED capacity. A future value stream map is proposed to streamline the ED activities and minimize waiting times.Research limitations/implicationsThe research involves a relatively small sample from a single case study. The proposed approach will enable the ED administrators to avoid the ED overcrowding and streamline the entire ED process.Originality/valueThis research identified ED quality issues from the integration of VOC and VOP perspective and suggested appropriate lean tools to overcome these problems. This process improvement approach will enable the ED administrators to improve productivity and performance of hospitals.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate the uses of performance measures in startup firms, including perceived importance and performance of those measures. Design/methodology/approachThe survey method is used in this study. Data are collected from founders/chief executive officers/managers of 110 startups in Thailand. The correlation analysis and analysis of variance techniques are used as the analysis tool in this study. FindingsThe results show that there is a positive relationship between the perceived importance and the performance of each metric. However, no significant differences are found in the importance and performance of each metric among the various stages of startups. Research limitations/implicationsBecause there are so few startups compared to large corporations, the sample size of this study is relatively small, which is a limitation for some statistical tests. Practical implicationsStartup should measure and monitor the correct metrics in a particular stage, instead of trying to perform well in all areas, which will lead them to lose focus, and possibly even fail. Results obtained from this study will aid startups in properly monitoring and managing their performance. Originality/valueUnlike large corporations, the performance measures used by startups vary, and depend on a startup’s stage and type. Because of the fact that there are much fewer startups than large corporations, there are a limited number of studies in this area. This research is among the first studies that try to investigate the uses of performance measure for this new type of organizations.

Purposeto evaluate the experiences of knowledge workers who work in shared workspaces and those who moved from single-cell offices to shared workspaces.Design/methodology/approachKnowledge workers were surveyed before and after 34% moved from single-cell offices to shared workspaces. The authors exploit this panel design in the analysis.FindingsShared offices were rated as providing more distraction, less privacy and worsened indoor environment quality (IEQ) (p < 0.05). Perceptions of collaboration and networking also declined in shared workspaces. Distraction and a lack of privacy were negatively associated with self-reported productivity (p < 0.10). Neither IEQ nor collaboration nor networking was significantly associated with productivity. The perceptions of those who moved to shared workspaces and those who had worked in shared workspaces all along were statistically indistinguishable.Research limitations/implicationsThe quasi-experimental control provides evidence that it is the office type, not the experience of moving, that accounts for the evaluative changes. There are limitations inherent in using a self-rating performance measure.Practical implicationsOrganisations should be aware that the positive outcomes ascribed to shared spaces may not be apparent and that demands may outweigh benefits.Originality/valueKnowledge workers are particularly impacted by distraction and interruptions to concentrated work. The quasi-experimental design controlled for the Hawthorne effect, demonstrating that it is the office type, not the move, that accounts for differences in perceptions.

Purpose The purpose of this note is to expose accounting students and others to recent findings in management control, specifically to the relationship between the informativeness of a performance measure and its usefulness in performance evaluation. Design/methodology/approach Numerical examples illuminate key ideas and are easy to follow and replicate by students. Findings Seemingly in contradiction to the controllability principle, performance measures that are informative about actions taken by employees are not necessarily useful for performance evaluation. This occurs when the performance being measured is related to an intermediate task, such as prepping items prior to final assembly. If prepping is an important factor in the quality of not only the intermediate good but also the finished good, and the quality of the finished good can be reasonably measured, it may not be useful to measure the prepping performance. This result holds even if obtaining the intermediate measure is costless and the intermediate measure provides unique information on the effort given to the intermediate task. Originality/value Opportunities to measure employees’ intermediate outputs are ubiquitous; therefore, judicious decisions should be made regarding the use of limited monitoring resources. This note contains intuitive, easy-to-follow illustrations (based on recent findings) that will help students and others identify situations where such evaluations are more and less useful.

Purpose The main purpose of this paper is to conduct an in-depth theoretical review and analysis for the fields of knowledge management (KM) and investigate the future research trend about KM. Design/methodology/approach At first, few theoretical basis about KM which include definitions and stages about KM have been summarized and analyzed. Then a comprehensive review about the major approaches for designing the KM system from different perspectives including knowledge representation and organization, knowledge sharing and performance measure for KM has been conducted. Findings The contributions of this paper will be useful for both academics and practitioners for the study of KM. Originality/value For this research, the focus is on conducting an in-depth theoretical review and analysis of KM.

The object of this research in the queueing theory is theorems about the functional strong laws of large numbers (FSLLN) under the conditions of heavy traffic in an open queueing network (OQN). The FSLLN is known as a fluid limit or fluid approximation. In this paper, FSLLN are proved for the values of important probabilistic characteristics of the OQN investigated as well as the virtual waiting time of a customer and the queue length of customers. As applications of the proved theorems laws of Little in OQN are presented.

Purpose This paper aims to study manipulation and performance persistence in equity mutual funds. To this end, Manipulation-Proof Performance Measure (MPPM) and Doubt Ratio, along with a number of current performance measures are used to evaluate the performance of equity mutual funds in Iran. Design/methodology/approach The authors investigate performance manipulation by 1) comparing the results of the MPPM with the current performance measures, 2) checking the Doubt Ratio to detect suspicious funds. Additionally, the authors investigate performance persistence by forming and evaluating portfolios of the equity mutual funds at several time horizons. Findings The authors conclude that there is no evidence of performance manipulation in the equity mutual funds. Additionally, when comparing the performance of the upper (top) tertile portfolios and the lower tertile portfolios, in all of the studied 1, 3, 6 and 12-month horizons, the authors find performance persistence in the equity mutual funds. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this research is the first study to investigate the performance manipulation in the Iranian equity mutual funds, and also is the first study in Iran that uses the MPPM and the Doubt Ratio in addition to a number of current performance measures to investigate the performance persistence in the equity mutual funds at several time horizons.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to address a fundamental study and performance analysis of a proposed 6Slots-10Poles permanent magnet flux switching machine (PMFSM) using straight rotor (StR) and 6Slots-8Poles PMFSM with spanned rotor (SpR) structure. Design/methodology/approach Design configuration of the proposed machine was developed using commercial finite element analysis package and JMAG-Designer V.14 software, which provides two-dimensional finite element solver throughout the investigation. An electromagnetic performance analysis is carried out and compared over the two proposed topologies which consist of machines no-load and under-load conditions. Findings This paper demonstrates the finding of the proposed StR structure which consist of more favorable three-phase sinusoidal feature, lower cogging torque and higher output torque. Flux density attributes reveal higher established magnetizing flux concentration in StR compared with SpR. Consequently, the StR structure requires low armature current before it may start to rotate and provides better robust construction with less material consumption and cost. Originality/value This paper describes the novel design of a new PMFSM configuration pertinent for high-speed applications.
