Influence of Groove Dimensions on the Tribological Behavior of Textured Cylindrical Roller Thrust Bearings under Starved Lubrication

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to reveal the friction and wear performance of grooves textured cylindrical roller thrust bearings with different groove dimensions under starved lubrication. Design/methodology/approach The groove dimensions include: width of grooves (WOG, 50 µm, 100 µm and 150 µm), depth of grooves (DPOG, 7 µm, 11 µm and 15 µm) as well as groove deflection angle (GDA, 45°). A fiber laser marking system was used to prepare groove patterns on the raceways of shaft washers. The friction and wear properties of grooves textured bearings were researched through a vertical universal wear test rig using a customized roller bearing tribo-pair under starved lubrication. Static finite element analyses were conducted to reveal their surface stresses. Through the comprehensive comparison and analyses, the influence mechanism of grooves on the tribological behavior of cylindrical roller thrust bearings was proposed and discussed. Findings When grooves textured bearings run under starved lubrication, their average coefficients of friction (COFs) and wear losses are all significantly reduced and much lower than those of smooth group. The influence of DPOG on the COF curves is significant, while the influence of WOG on the COF curves is a little weak. The influence of groove dimensions on the surface stresses of grooves textured bearings is weak, whether the WOG or DPOG. In this work, when the WOG is 100 µm and the DPOG is 15 µm, its average COF and wear loss are both the lowest, 0.0066 and 0.61 mg, respectively. Compared with the data of smooth group, its friction coefficient is reduced by 75.3% and its mass loss is reduced by 95.8%, showing a significant improvement in this condition. Originality/value This work can provide a valuable reference for the raceway design and reliability optimization of rolling element bearings.

AbstractTo reveal the effect of vein-bionic surface textures on the tribological behavior of cylindrical roller thrust bearings (CRTBs) under starved lubrication, six kinds of leaves (Forsythia, Clausena lansiu, Ash, Purple leaf plum, Pipal and Apricot) were chose and their simplified patterns were fabricated on the shaft washers of CRTBs using laser surface texturing. The coefficients of friction (COFs) of vein-bionic textured bearings were measured using a vertical universal wear test rig. Their mass losses and worn surfaces were also characterized. The results show that: There is important influence of the symmetry of vein-bionic textures and the number of secondary veins on the friction and wear properties of vein-bionic textured CRTBs under starved lubrication. Compared to the smooth group, the COFs and mass losses of vein-bionic textured bearings are all reduced. Among all groups, the tribological performance of bearings with a pattern inspired from Ash is the best. Its wear loss is reduced by 16.23% and its COF is reduced by 15.79%. This work would provide a valuable reference for the raceway design and optimization of roller rolling element bearings.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the effect of CaF2 (calcium fluoride) addition as a solid lubricant on the friction and wear behaviour of sintered Fe-Cu-C materials under different loads. Design/methodology/approach In this study, the effects of CaF2 added in varying weight percentages on the friction-wear properties of Fe-2Cu-0.8C alloys are investigated. Five Fe-2Cu-0.8C-based compositions comprising CaF2 in 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 Wt.% were prepared using the single-stage compaction and sintering technique. Friction coefficient, wear loss, hardness and compressive strength of the specimens were measured. The worn-out surfaces were analysed using a scanning electron microscope. Friction and wear tests were carried out on pin-on-disc machine under dry sliding conditions at room temperature. Findings The alloy with 3 Wt.% CaF2 was found to be useful in improving wear and friction properties, whereas higher contents of CaF2 resulted in increased wear and friction. Apart from enhanced tribological properties, a slight decrease in the compressive strength was also observed in the 3-Wt.%-CaF2-added sample. Adhesion and abrasion were the prominent wear types observed during this study. Originality/value A new self-lubricating composite is developed where CaF2 is used as a solid lubricant in a Fe-Cu-C-based matrix. CaF2, being a high-temperature lubricant, is tried and tested for friction and wear at room temperature, and the results show that the addition of CaF2 in Fe-Cu-C improved its friction and wear properties. Thus, the developed material can be used for antifriction applications.

A novel Co-WC composite coating was deposited on the surface of high speed steel (HSS) substrate by an energy-efficient method of electrodeposition. The effects of process parameters on friction and wear properties of the composite coatings were evaluated, and the worn morphologies of Co-WC composite coatings were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Results revealed that the incorporation of WC particles can significantly improve the wear resistance of the coating. As the current density was increased to 6.5Adm-2 and the WC concentration was increased to 35g/L, the Co-WC composite coating had the lowest friction coefficient and wear loss.

Purpose This paper aims to obtain high mechanical and good tribological properties of epoxy resin-based coatings under dry friction conditions. Design/methodology/approach Bonded solid lubricant coatings containing Kevlar fibres were prepared by a spraying method. The friction and wear properties of the coatings were experimentally investigated with a face-to-face tribometre under dry friction conditions. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and 3D laser scanning technologies were used to characterise the tribological properties. The action mechanism of the Kevlar fibres on a solid lubricant transfer film was also analysed. Findings Adding Kevlar fibres can significantly improve the wear resistance of the coatings. When the Kevlar fibre content increases, the tribological properties of the coatings improve and then worsen. Superior properties are obtained with 0.03 g of Kevlar fibres. Appropriately increasing the load or speed is beneficial to the removal of the outer epoxy resin and the formation of a lubricant film. During friction, the solid lubricants wrapped in the epoxy resin accumulate on the surface to form a transfer film that shows a good self-lubricating performance. In the later friction stage, fatigue cracks occur on the solid lubricant film but cannot connect to one another because of the high wear resistance and the entanglement of the rod-like Kevlar fibres. Thus, no large-area film falls from the matrix, thereby ensuring the long-term functioning of solid lubricant coatings. Originality/value Epoxy resin-based solid lubricant coatings modified by Kevlar fibres were prepared, and their friction and wear properties were investigated. Their tribological mechanisms were also proposed. This work provided a basis for the analysis of the tribological properties and design of bonded solid lubricant coatings containing Kevlar fibres.

Purpose This study aims to uncover the influencing mechanism of the tilt angles of the cage pocket walls of the high-speed cylindrical roller bearing on the bearing skidding. Design/methodology/approach A novel cylindrical roller bearing with the beveled cage pockets was proposed. Using the Hertz contact theory and the elastohydrodynamic and hydrodynamic lubrication formulas, the contact models of the bearing were built. Using the multibody kinematics and the Newton–Euler dynamics theory, a dynamics model of the bearing was established. Using the Runge–Kutta integration method, the dynamics simulations and analysis of the bearing were performed. Findings The simulation results show that the effects of the tilt angles of the front and rear walls of the pocket on the bearing skidding are remarkable. Under a 5° tilt angle of the front wall of the pocket and a 10° tilt angle of the rear wall, the bearing skidding can be effectively decreased in the rotational speed range of 10,000-70,000 r/min. Originality/value In this paper, a novel cylindrical roller bearing with the beveled cage pockets was proposed; a dynamics model of the bearing was established; the influence mechanism of the tilt angles of the front and rear walls of the pocket on the bearing skidding was investigated, which can provide fundamental theory basis for optimizing the pocket. Purpose Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is adopted in water-lubricated bearings for its excellent performance. This paper aims to investigate the tribological properties of UHMWPE with a molecular weight of 10.2 million (g mol‐1) under different molding temperatures. Design/methodology/approach The UHMWPE samples were prepared by mold pressing under constant pressure and different molding temperatures (140°C, 160°C, 180°C, 200°C, 220°C). The friction and wear tests in water were conducted at the RTEC tribo-tester. Findings The friction coefficient and wear loss decreased first and rose later with the increasing molding temperature. The minimums of the friction coefficient and wear loss were found at the molding temperatures of 200°C. At low melting temperatures, the UHMWPE molecular chains could not unwrap thoroughly, leading to greater abrasive wear. On the other hand, high melting temperatures will cause the UHMWPE molecular chains to break up and decompose. The optimal molding temperatures for UHMWPE were found to be 200°C. Originality/value Findings are of great significance for the design of water-lubricated UHMWPE bearings.

The friction and wear properties of an Al6061 alloy reinforced with carbon fibers (CF) modified with Cu-Ni bimetallic layers were researched. Cu-Ni double layers were applied to the CF by electroless plating and Al6061-matrix composites were prepared by powder metallurgy technology. The metal-CF/Al interfaces and post-dry-wear-testing wear loss weights, friction coefficients, worn surfaces, and wear debris were characterized. After T6 heat treatment, the interfacial bonding mechanism of Cu-Ni-CF changed from mechanical bonding to diffusion bonding and showed improved interfacial bonding strength because the Cu transition layer reduced the fiber damage caused by Ni diffusion. The metal–CF interfacial bonding strongly influenced the composite’s tribological properties. Compared to the Ni-CF/Al and Cu-CF/Al composites, the Cu-Ni-CF/Al composite showed the highest hardness, the lowest friction coefficient and wear rate, and the best load-carrying capacity. The wear mechanisms of Cu-Ni-CF/Al composite are mainly slight abrasive wear and adhesive wear.

In order to improve the wear resistance and extend service life of aluminum alloy parts, the Ni-base alloy anti-wear coatings were prepared on the surfaces of 7A05 aluminum alloy by plasma spraying technology. The microstructure and interface of the coatings were analyzed, and the friction and wear properties of Ni-base alloy coatings and aluminum alloy substrates were investigated under dry friction condition at room temperature. The research results show that the main phases of Ni-base alloy coating are γ-Ni, CrB and Cr23C6. The thicknesses of diffusion layers existing between intermediate layer and coating, intermediate layer and substrate are respectively 15μm and 20μm. The bonding types of the coating and the substrate are mechanical combination accompanied with partially metallurgical combination. When wore against GCr15 steel balls, the average friction coefficient of the Ni-base alloy coatings is 11.6% lower than that of the aluminum alloy substrates, and the average wear loss of the former is 9.3mg, which is only 1/3 of that of the latter. With the increase of loads, the wear mechanisms of the Ni-base alloy coatings change from slightly micro-cutting wear and fatigue wear to abrasive wear and micro-fracture wear, while those of the aluminum alloy substrates are mainly adhesive wear and abrasive wear as well as slight oxidation wear.

A composite layer was prepared on the Ti-6Al-4V alloy surface by ion nitriding, magnetron sputtering Mo and ion sulfurizing composite treatment technique. The phase structure, morphology, and cross-sectional element distribution of composite layer were analyzed. Friction and wear properties of composite layer were tested by MM-200 laboratory tester. XRD analysis showed that the composite layer was mainly comprised of Ti, Mo, MoS2, TiN, and transition layer. This composite layer is perfect wear-resistant surface due to existence of self-lubricating MoS2 on hard Mo and TiN layers with good anti-friction ability. Thereby, the results of friction and wear test showed that anti-wear performance of Ti-6Al-4V alloy after composite treatment was remarkably improved under dry and sliding conditions. Both the friction coefficient and the wear loss of the nitriding-Mo plating-sulfurizing layers were lower than that of the nitriding layer due to the formation of the MoS2 layer on Mo and TiN layers.

To reduce the friction coefficient between impregnated diamond bit and rock, experiments on addition of graphite to the matrix material of bit cutters were conducted. The cutters were made up of diamond contained working layers and binding layers. The friction and wear properties of cutters and binding layers were investigated using a pin-on-disc friction & wear tester with granite as tribopair. The results showed that with addition of graphite, the hardness and friction coefficient of binding layer decreased, but its wear resistance increased; compared to cutters without graphite, those cutters containing graphite had lower wear loss and friction coefficient and their sliding wear process was much steadier, but diamond protrusion was still normal.
