Resource based view of internationalization: evidence from Indian commercial banks

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the influence of internal resource drivers on internationalization of commercial banks. Design/methodology/approach – Panel data on 46 Indian commercial banks from 2008 to 2012 were collected from secondary sources to measure how assets size, human resources, branding and advertising, ownership and age influence the international diversification of the commercial bank. Internationalization of the commercial bank was measured in terms of international advances intensity, international borrowing intensity and number of countries served. Regression models were designed with controlled multicolinearity, heterogeneity and exogeneity. Findings – Higher assets’ size, higher human resources, private ownership and higher organizational age led to internationalization of Indian commercial banks. However, higher branding and advertisement expenses and state ownership were found to be negatively related to international diversification. Originality/value – Internationalization is one of the growth strategies of a firm which cannot be unified and generalized due to resource heterogeneity. So this necessitates a large number of studies sector-wise, sub-sector-wise, product-wise, industry-wise and region-wise. There is a dearth of literature on resource view of internationalization of commercial banks. So, this Indian study adds a new finding on resource-based view of internationalization to the existing body of knowledge.

PurposeThis paper aimed to investigate the determinants of loans and advances from commercial banks in the case of Ethiopian private commercial banks.Design/methodology/approachThe study randomly selected seven commercial banks to represent the population stratified on their asset, deposit and paid-up capital amounts. The study utilized an unbalanced panel data model as each bank started operation at a different period of time and considered the period 1995–2016 for secondary details.FindingsThe findings showed that the deposit size, credit risk, portfolio investment, average lending rate, real gross domestic product (GDP) and inflation rate had significant and optimistic effects on the lending and advancement of private commercial banks. On the contrary, liquidity ratio had significant and negative effects on private commercial bank loans and advances. Finally, the study forwarded a feasible recommendation for concerned organs to focus on deposit size, credit risk, portfolio investment, average lending rate, real GDP, inflation rate and liquidity ratio. The results of this study will help banking industry policymakers and planners understand how to minimize inflation and unemployment by improving development and sustainable economic growth.Originality/valueThe findings of this study can also affect the general attitudes of a society by increasing knowledge and improve the quality of life for the general public.

Purpose Efficiency of a commercial bank affects both its competitiveness and the role it plays in the process of economic development. Although great efforts have been exerted in developing the various aspects of banking efficiency, there seems to be a lack of research on examining the impact of the bank efficiency from the employee wage perspective. The mechanism of how employee wage affects commercial bank efficiency and the relationship between the two were analyzed in this paper. Based on the growing body of research on efficiency in banking, the aim of this paper is to examine if competitiveness of employee wages at any commercial bank has any impact on the bank efficiency score. Design/methodology/approach The method used was quantitative analysis, which was based on comparing the evaluated efficiencies of the banks with employee wages published in the bank reports. The empirical data in this paper were based on 16 Chinese listed commercial banks from 2004 to 2012. The per capita wage of commercial banks was selected as the wage indicator, and the efficiency value obtained by the slack-based measure (SBM) model was selected as the efficiency indicator. According to the calculated data, the Tobit regression model was built to analyze the relationship between employee wage and commercial bank efficiency. Findings The research results show that employee wage is the key variable that influences the efficiency of Chinese commercial banks, and the inverted U-shaped relationship between employee wage and commercial banks efficiency shows up. Practical implications The wage structure data of the composition of basic pay and bonus were not available at the time of conducting the research. Per capita wages were used instead to reflect the employee wage levels of Chinese banks. Originality/value This study can provide some help for the banking industry by analyzing the wage levels from the perspective of efficiency and also further enriches the theoretical system of the relationship between employee wage and bank efficiency.


Subject Nigerian banking innovations. Significance After complaints over the slow growth of commercial bank lending specifically to preferred sectors, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) recently proposed a range of new policy measures. This includes a new minimum loan-to-deposit ratio (LDR) target of 60% for all commercial banks, and that loans extended to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), retail, mortgage and consumer lending be weighted at 150%. Banks are required to conform to the new requirements by September 30. Impacts Liquidity outflows from banks that opt to drop expensive deposits may lead to pressure on the naira. The interplay of the new LDR policy and CBN Treasury Bills' maturities will prompt uncertainty in currency and debt markets. Newly created banks are even more unlikely to be able to expand their loan book quickly enough to meet the new requirements.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to know the implications that COVID-19 has presented in the workplace to develop research strategies related to issues of human and organizational behavior on the business perspective. Design/methodology/approach Quantitative, exploratory based on primary and secondary sources, an online questionnaire was designed and applied with 33 items that was applied in the Mexican work environment, during the period from March 7 to 16, that is, in the same week as WHO made the pandemic declaration for COVID-19, obtaining a total of 332 responses. Findings With the descriptive analyzes carried out, it was possible to know the perception that people have of various aspects related to COVID-19, and subsequently the corresponding reliability tests were carried out, obtaining Cronbach’s alpha indexes greater than 0.8. At the beginning of the declaration of pandemic by COVID-19, a relationship was shown between stress and the aspects related to the arrival of COVID-19, showing evidence of its impact on the workforce. Research limitations/implications This work has contributed ideas for academics, managers and areas of human resources that can promote the growth and development of people with the aim of achieving comprehensive well-being in the workplace, generating better working conditions owing to the proposal to make remote work a successful strategy in the function of human resources in the workplace and in the improvement of society in general. Originality/value This research, in addition to being carried out with information obtained in the first weeks of March 2020, presents a model with ideas and themes to design future research projects and to analyze the post-COVID-19 effects in the workplace, with a business perspective, human behavior and organization.


Significance Recent high-profile incidents have called into question the viability of the business model in large parts of Latvia’s banking sector. In February, the US Treasury accused ABLV Bank of laundering money for North Korea. Separately, Ilmars Rimsevics, governor of the Bank of Latvia (the central bank), was accused by a Latvian commercial bank of demanding bribes and taken into custody by the Bureau for Preventing and Combating Corruption (KNAB). Impacts Latvia’s reputation has suffered from the latest revelations and accusations of money laundering and corruption. There will be greater pressure on the Latvian authorities to be stricter on commercial banks whose main business is with non-residents. When this source of revenue dries up, some banks’ business models may have to change, also sparking some consolidation in the sector.

Purpose – The last decade witnessed the reform of China's financial sector, during which Chinese commercial banks’ ownership and operation had been significantly changed in order to improve efficiency. The purpose of this paper is to investigates whether these banks have improved their productivity efficiency during their rapid expansion and growth in the post reform era from 2004 to 2011. Design/methodology/approach – Data envelopment analysis is used to investigate the production efficiency of Chinese commercial banks during 2004-2011. First, the technical efficiency (TE) score is constructed to evaluate bank productivity. The TE score is disintegrated into pure technical efficiency (PTE) and scale efficiency (SE) to examine the effects of technical factors and scale economies. Second, the Malmquist index is constructed to explore the year-by-year productivity. Lastly, regression analysis examines how bank characteristics and ownership structure affect productivity efficiency. Findings – The Big Four banks are less efficient than other commercial banks, and public banks are less efficient than private banks. The low efficiency is primarily due to scale inefficiency, rather than PTE. In addition, ownership structure impacts production efficiency. Specifically, foreign ownership is related to high efficiency while state ownership is associated with lower productivity. Research limitations/implications – There were small observations of public banks in China. Thus, a more comprehensive test is impractical to explore whether or not annual changes in ownership structure improve their production efficiency. With more date, such a test will reveal further information about the relationship between ownership and productivity. Originality/value – The authors are the first to assess the production efficiency of Chinese commercial banks after the recent financial reform during which Chinese commercial banks had undergone significant structural changes. The lower overall productivity of Big Four and public banks is a result of scale inefficiency, although these banks are better than their peers with respect to input-output transformation.

The aim of the research was to investigate the relation of Personal/Human Resource Management in Commercial Banks in Georgia. The effective, transparent and fair managing depends on many different factors and among them the personal/human resources management is one of the most important factors. The guarantee that the people who are properly chosen in the commercial bank, with appropriate skills, competencies and qualifications significantly increases their job effectiveness. It is remarkable that human resources management is being implemented differently in various countries. In some countries a special agency is created, which is centrally managed by the management of all human resources. While in some countries this practice is completely decentralized and each agency or department individually carries out personnel management. However, mainly mixed practices exist in the country where there is a central agency of human resources management, which defines the general strategy of human resource management, and directly implementing relevant activities such as selection and assessment. The results of the research allowed concluding that the main factor related to personal management in the commercial banks was the shortage of professionalism and financial resources. The lack of qualified staff was mentioned by the managers as an insuperable problem to introduce innovations as well. The small projects sector suffers from many constraints, especially in terms of the financial side due to weakness in the finance, the problem of the study occurs based on the presence of obstacles in financing small projects by Jordanian Commercial Banks (Banking Obstacles, Small Projects Obstacles, and Governmental Obstacles). Thus, the study seeks to identify those obstacles, and it founded there is a significant statistical impact of the obstacles (Banking obstacles, Small projects Obstacles, Governmental obstacles) on the financing of small projects by Jordanian commercial banks. Also, there is a good statistical relationship between the obstacles (Banking obstacles, Small projects Obstacles, Governmental obstacles) and the financing of small projects by Jordanian commercial bank. The study recommended that the central bank should make laws that force banks to set aside a portion of the loans portfolio to small projects. Also, there is a need for the government to provide support to small projects, specifically in the training of the human resources and in the making of an economic feasibility study.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the human resources management of regional tourism organizations (RTOs) in Poland as a condition for organization effectiveness and presents a model of RTO operation in destination management organizations for improved effectiveness. Design/methodology/approach The study was of qualitative nature because of the scope of the examined features and analyses of RTO effectiveness (here in relation to human resources). The research involved the following stages: desk research of secondary sources, pilot diagnostic survey and diagnostic survey proper, qualitative and statistical analyses. First, an analysis of secondary sources regarding conditions of RTO operation effectiveness took place. Next, a questionnaire was used to collect empirical data from 137 respondents from the same 13 group types, in equal numbers from each organization in the entire population of 16 RTOs. Findings The research identified 197 organizational effectiveness variables, in four feature groups: the effectiveness of statutory and economic objectives, stakeholders’ benefits from cooperating with RTOs and general characteristics of RTO operation effectiveness. The findings suggest that the characteristics of RTO employees influence organizational effectiveness, especially from the perspective of the organization’s stakeholders. There is a need for strong support for RTO employee structures as a measure to raise organization effectiveness. Practical implications Specific human resources practices are identified for the effectiveness of non-enterprise organizations (employee character and structure) that constitute an essential component of the management system at regional and national levels. New directions for RTO operations are also proposed. Originality/value The study fills a substantial and identified knowledge gap in assessing organization effectiveness level against the quality characteristics of RTO human resources. The analysis allowed the creation of a multidimensional and universal model of RTO effectiveness investigation, which facilitates comparative analysis of organizations despite their strong diversity. It can be implemented in assessing the effectiveness of other non-enterprise organizations in the context of tourism.

The question of whether size influences financial performance of commercial banks has not been conclusively settled empirically. The objective of the study was therefore to establish the effect size has on the profitability of commercial banks in Kenya. The study used an unbalanced panel of all commercial banks in Kenya for the ten year period 2007 to 2016 (the number ranged from 39 to 43). Regression analysis was used to relate size (proxied by log of total assets) against financial performance (Return on assets and return on equity). Size was found to have a positive effect on financial performance of commercial banks in Kenya. In addition, the effect was stronger the larger the commercial bank. The study recommends that policy initiatives geared towards increasing the size of the commercial banks be considered and shareholders/managers could also adopt growth strategies (internally generated, fund raising or mergers and acquisitions).
