PurposeCOVID-19’s attack on the system of education left the learning of many students in limbo. For minimizing this effect, the current study sought to probe how Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) can facilitate English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ vocabulary knowledge. In so doing, a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest research design was adopted to check the effect of a newly developed application (i.e. visual vocabulary learning, hereafter VVL) in an EFL classroom.Design/methodology/approachTo complying with the objective, a number of intermediate students (N = 40) were considered to participate in the study. They were assigned into a visual learning group (VLG) and a nonvisual learning group (NVLG) comprising 20 students in each. The VLG was directed to learn vocabulary by a VVL, and the NVG, a conventional method was employed for vocabulary instruction. An independent samples t-test was run to screen the efficacy of the intervention.FindingsThe finding revealed that participants in the VLG outperformed significantly in the posttest. The finding is beneficial for EFL teachers, syllabus designers, and material developers to take advantage of mobile applications in teaching vocabulary.Originality/valueThis study was conducted during COVID 19 between two groups in Iran.

Role-playing games develop the ability to organize and implement educational and cognitive activities in the field of vocational education. The article defines the role-playing game, its scenario features, methodical orientation. It also reveals its difference from business games. The author provides a description and analysis of several role-playing games that can be carried out at an early stage of language learning for the purpose of language professionalization. The selection of material for games involves both lexical units necessary for linguo-cultural communication, and grammatical rules that can help the development of a given topic. To analyze the results, the author uses data from a survey conducted among students who participated in the game. On the basis of these data, the charts demonstrating the readiness of students to work with Italian partners and in a multicultural environment are constructed. The carts show an increase of students’ confidence in their business communication skills with foreign partners. Knowledge of professional discourse and the ability to deal with it relieves stress, contributes to personal development. At the end of the article the author concludes that the use of a role-playing game as a productive modern technology for training international economists in a foreign language at an early stage contributes to the development of professional competencies.

Since vocabulary learning plays a crucial role in the journey of language learning, various programs and mobile applications have been developed to assist vocabulary learning. However, the effectiveness of MALL-based (mobile-assisted language learning) tools can be determined by examining the perception of users, who are learners in this case, because, as Beres (2011) emphasized, learners do not always perceive learning tool effectiveness in the same way as educators. Thus, the primary purpose of this study is to investigate the perspectives of learners regarding the use of one of the programs that can be used for vocabulary learning — Quizlet. The perceptions of thirty-eight Saudi EFL (English as a Foreign Language) freshmen college students regarding the use of Quizlet for fourteen weeks were examined using questionnaires and interviews. The main findings of the study show that the students demonstrated positive attitudes towards the use of Quizlet in English vocabulary learning. They perceived it as a useful program that was easy to use, and they reported the intention to use it in the future. The present study highly recommends the use of MALL-based tools for vocabulary learning for their usefulness inside and outside the classroom.

Purpose Based on consideration of learner needs for expanding vocabulary and the complexity of educational content, this paper introduces a model aimed at facilitating English vocabulary learning. Design/methodology/approach By measuring a set of effective variables regarding simplicity of English sentences, a ranking algorithm is presented in the proposed model. According to this ranking, the simplest sentence in the recommender system (RS) is selected and recommended to the user. Furthermore, Pearson correlation coefficient was used for checking the degree of correlation among the respective parameters on sentence simplicity. For evaluating the efficiency of the recommended algorithm, a prototype was designed by programming using Embarcadero Delphi XE2. Findings The results of the study indicated that the correlation among the parameters of word frequency, sentence length and average dependency distance were 0.723, 0.683 and 0.589, respectively. The computed final score is considered to be more accurate. Practical implications The application of RS in language learning and education sheds light on the theoretical validity of system thinking by highlighting its key features: its multidisciplinary nature, complexity, dynamicity and the interdependence and relation of micro and macro levels in a system. Social implications The proposed method has significant pedagogical implications; it can be used by second language teachers and learners for checking the degree of complexity/learnability of discourse and text. Originality/value This paper proposes an alternate model with a significantly higher speed for computing final sentence score.

Online teaching and learning activities are no longer ‘a nice-to-have extracurricular facility’ but an answer to what, how, when people learn, and where they learn it from. Digitization of education helps us to find answers to how technology can enable teachers and students to access specialized materials outside the classroom, in various formats and ways that help to utilize both time and space. Educators all over the world are trying to overcome the limitations of being physically separated by moving onto online learning platforms. This paper attempts to find out the feasibility of using technology for teaching language to learners of English as a second language in the present-day context. The findings of this research are based on responses to a questionnaire answered by both the Language teachers and the Undergraduate students of Middle East College, Muscat and through literature review. Gen Z, the ‘digital natives’ do not want teachers to be replaced entirely by computers as they need motivation, inspiration, and emotional support. Virtual education is feasible, but its success depends upon the effective content generation, designing and planning for its delivery, and the effective use of teaching/learning tools that can supplement the efforts of the teachers. For online teaching and learning not only do the colleges and educational institutions need to be well-equipped, the learners also need to adapt to the changing scenario.
