Modeling a maintenance management framework for asset management based on ISO 55000 series guidelines

PurposeMaintenance management is perceived as fundamental for ensuring that physical assets contribute to business outcomes. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to elaborate a novel maintenance management framework for asset management (MMFAM) based on ISO 55000 series guidelines.Design/methodology/approachThe paper proposes an MMFAM that intends to translate the technical requirements set out in the ISO 550001 standard to the maintenance stage of asset management. First, the framework is modeled using consideration based on the analysis of the ISO 55000 series and the review of previous maintenance management frameworks. Then, support tools are presented that collaborate for the implementation of the processes and activities provided for in the MMFAM.FindingsThe proposed MMFAM was modeled using a Business Process Model and Notation since it is a standardized graphical notation for process modeling and contributes to the understanding of the framework. In addition, the applicable tools were presented for the practical implementation of MMFAM processes and activities.Practical implicationsThe paper is expected to contribute to maintenance practitioners and researchers in understanding and disseminating a novel maintenance management framework that is in line with asset management through the international ISO 55000 series.Originality/valueAs it is essentially multidisciplinary and complex, asset management has still been little explored. Moreover, the requirements for implementing an asset management system, as explained in the ISO 55001 standard, only provide what needs to be done, but not how to do it. Accordingly, the paper fills a gap in maintenance management literature, as it addresses the ISO 55000 series for asset management in depth.

Maintenance is one of the main stages to deliver business outcomes from physical assets over their life cycles. However, as unexpected events and performance may occur in maintenance management, organizations shall be aware of how to address them as well as other opportunities for improvement. Accordingly, this chapter intends to present an improvement framework for maintenance management. The first two sections provide an introduction to maintenance management improvement and its interface with the ISO 55000 series for asset management and the maintenance management model (MMM). Then, the proposed framework and its activities for improvement in maintenance management are discussed in the third section. The fourth section addresses an overview of the main RCA techniques to support the framework implementation. Finally, a hydroelectric power plant case study is discussed to demonstrate the framework in a real operational context.

Enterprise asset management (EAM) systems are used by asset owners and/or operators to manage the maintenance of their physical assets. These assets, including equipment, facilities, vehicles, and infrastructure, need maintenance to sustain their operations. An EAM system provides the means to have less unplanned downtime and extended asset longevity, which offers clear business benefits that improve the profit and loss statement and balance sheet. Particularly for capital-intensive industries, like drilling and exploration, the failure of on-time delivery of critical equipment or processes is disruptive and costs nonproductive time and customer satisfaction. Organizations understand these issues and employ an appropriate asset management system to engineer their asset maintenance and management. An EAM system is needed to manage the people, assets/equipment, and processes. EAMs are used to plan, optimize, execute, and track the needed maintenance activities with associated priorities, skills, materials, tools, and information. Similarly, nondestructive testing (NDT) is used as a tool for integrity assessment of assets in drilling and exploration. The main advantage of using NDT is that the item’s intended use or serviceability is not affected. The selection of a specific technique should be based on knowledge and skills that include design, material processing, and material evaluation. Validating the purpose of this paper, we emphasize the importance of optimizing the asset utilization and serviceability to enhance overall efficiency by integrating EAM software that manages assets, the operation management system (OMS) controlling the processes, and asset inspection management systems (AIMSs).

PurposeThis paper proposes a theory-based process model for the generation, articulation, sharing and application of managerial heuristics, from their origin as unspoken insight, to proverbialization, to formal or informal sharing, and to their adoption as optional guidelines or policy.Design/methodology/approachA conceptual paper is built using systematic and non-systematic review of literature. This paper employs a three-step approach to propose a process model for the emergence of managerial heuristics. Step one uses a systematic review of empirical studies on heuristics in order to map extant research on four key criteria and to obtain, by flicking through this sample in a moving-pictures style, the static stages of the process; step two adapts a knowledge management framework to yield the dynamic aspect; step three assembles these findings into a graphical process model and uses insights from literature to enrich its description and to synthesize four propositions.FindingsThe paper provides insights into how heuristics originate from experienced managers confronted with negative situations and are firstly expressed as an inequality with a threshold. Further articulation is done by proverbialization, refining and adapting. Sharing is done either in an informal way, through socialization, or in a formal way, through regular meetings. Soft adoption as guidelines is based on expert authority, while hard adoption as policy is based on hierarchical authority or on collective authority.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings are theory-based, and the model must be empirically refined.Practical implicationsPractical advice for managers on how to develop and share their portfolio of heuristics makes this paper valuable for practitioners.Originality/valueThis study addresses the less-researched aspect of heuristics creation, transforms static insights from literature into a dynamic process model, and, in a blended-theory approach, considers insights from a distant, but relevant literature – paremiology (the science of proverbs).

Purpose – The current maintenance management method has affected the efficiency of the building facility management at Polytechnics. Many issues such as poor service delivery, inadequate finance, poor maintenance planning and maintenance backlogs have emerged due to the usage of conventional method application (paper-based form and unsystematic database). Therefore, the proposed system improvement is intended to be used for maintenance management practices at Malaysian Polytechnics in order to provide high quality of building facility with safe and healthy environments. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Eight Polytechnics were selected based on major problems of using conventional method in the comparison to investigate the maintenance management practices in each Polytechnic. Findings – The overall findings of this research indicated; poor service delivery, inadequate financial, poor maintenance planning and maintenance backlogs. The system architecture and the conceptual process model are presented to integrate the information database and maintenance management processes in improving the building diagnosis approach and decision-making process for managing building maintenance. Originality/value – This new system development provides a better maintenance assessment for identifying symptoms, causes and reasons of building defects without depending on the expensive instruments, for instance, non-destructive testing (NDT) and sensor technology. It also has the potential to become the successful technology in assisting the maintenance contractors, clients and developer for effective management of maintenance defects at Polytechnic.

Purpose – The aim of this paper is to propose solutions for improving internal controls and transparency to alleviate concerns of international community over alleged linked with terrorist groups. Design/methodology/approach – The authors explore the counter-insurgency theory and political process model to explain the current state of counter-terrorism activities aimed at Islamic NGOs after 9/11. Findings – The authors believe the idea of money flow disruption to be of greater importance than freezing the accounts to suppress terrorism financing. Practical implications – Islamic NGOs established for philanthropic and humanitarian aid in third world Muslim countries have been accused of being involved in terrorism financing. This revelation is to the disadvantage of the donors who do not channel their donations for such activities. The authors propose risk management framework useful at operational level to detect and prevent welfare activities financing warfare activities. Originality/value – The proposed risk management framework is to complement various regional and international initiatives championed by Asia/Pacific Group on Money Laundering and Financial Action Task Force to combat money laundering and terrorist financing.

Purpose This paper will aim to explain two strategies for digital preservation of law reviews, informing law librarians of the options which might best suit their needs. Design/methodology/approach On November 7, 2008, the Durham Statement on Open Access to Legal Scholarship was released to the public. One of its main tenets – that law schools and libraries “stop publishing journals in print format and rely instead on electronic publication coupled with a commitment to keep the electronic versions available in stable, open, digital formats” – was an open call to law libraries to start thinking about digital preservation strategies for their law reviews. The Legal Information Preservation Alliance responded to the need by developing the Law Review Preservation Program, an initiative, which archives law reviews hosted on the Bepress Digital Commons (DC) platform in Controlled LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) or CLOCKSS. Findings For those law libraries without subscriptions to DC, there is an open-source, freely available alternative solution for ingesting digital law reviews into any preservation platform. This application, called the Submission Information Metadata Packaging, or SIMP tool was developed at the J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah, initially as a solution for ingesting content into the Ex Libris Rosetta Digital preservation platform, as part of a CONTENTdm digital asset management workflow. Though the development of the SIMP tool was inspired by Marriott’s need to ingest digital files from CONTENTdm to Rosetta, they built it to work with any Digital Asset Management System and Digital preservation platform. Originality/value Digital Preservation of law reviews is in its infancy. This is one of the first articles of its kind to provide specific solutions and technical advice for law libraries.

Purpose In order to increase productivity and create added value in ceramic and tile industries of Iran, the role of physical assets including machinery, equipment and utilities is very important in these industries, and management of those take an important role. Organizational culture and its role in physical asset management implementation are very important in the Iran ceramic and tile industries. In these industries, there is a secret force called culture, which must be changed if the organization wants to grow up and improve physical assets management. The purpose of this paper is to identify organizational cultural, technical and reliability variables and structure of these variables in form of a combined structural model. Design/methodology/approach In order to present a structural combination model, a development model type, the mixed research method is used, and expert’s comments are also used. This model was implemented at Apadana Ceram Company, and its results, in comparison with previous models on physical assets, have shown that consideration of four culture elements can be of great help to reach an optimal point in maintenance and excellence. Findings In this paper, analysis of previous research studies, project documents and expert’s opinions in ceramic and tile industries have been used. In the presented model, special attention has been paid to organizational culture and its four elements including values, patterns, rituals and procedures and cultural infrastructure in order to achieve excellence and reach an optimal point in maintenance. Also, governing structure between organizational culture and technical and reliability variables was nominated, which could help companies in physical asset management. Furthermore, eight components of change management were expressed, which are important in order to implement this model. Originality/value This model with special consideration of four culture elements can be of great help to industries to reach an optimal point in maintenance and excellence.

Purpose With the emergence of ranking of universities by organizations, one major factor considered in the rankings is the intellectual output of the universities. For universities to remain part of the global academic competitive society, intellectual output of universities can no longer be stored on shelves in libraries. Academic libraries have engaged in digitization of the intellectual works of their institutions which is a core mandate of any academic library. The purpose of this study is to ascertain the state of digitization initiatives among university libraries in Ghana. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative approach was adopted. Nine top universities in Ghana were selected to participate in this study. Interviews were conducted with heads of libraries. Findings The findings of the study revealed that seven out of the nine libraries studied have embarked on some sort of digitization initiative, and all libraries studied are using the same digital asset management system (Dspace). Major challenges reported by the participants that are common to all the libraries studied are lack of adequate and modern equipment, lack of trained personnel and lack of cooperation from faculty members. Originality/value This study brought fore the initiatives undertaken by academic libraries in Ghana to establish and maintain institutional repositories (IRs) amidst a number of challenges. It is a major contribution to the literature from West Africa as not much literature on IR is found from this part of the world.
