Application of quality function deployment for the prioritization of National Board of Accreditation quality parameters

Purpose Owing to high competition in education sector, quality in education has become utmost important criteria to deliver better education service. For this purpose, it is required to monitor the quality of education. This paper aims to prioritize National Board of Accreditation (NBA) quality parameters in engineering education as per student’s needs using quality function deployment (QFD). Design/methodology/approach This study is conducted among students of an institute of National importance in three stages. Stage 1 involves conducting interview with 23 students to find the student’s requirement from an institute. Further Stage 2 involves importance rating collection through questionnaire survey method. In this stage, 228 students have given a rating of each student’s requirement. Finally, Stage 3 involves establishing correlation between student’s requirement and NBA quality parameters that has been done by 20 academic experts and finally making a QFD matrix for ranking of each NBA quality parameter. Findings The result of the study first indicates that among all students’ requirements, job-oriented requirement is the most important need, and ergonomics-based requirement is the least important need of students. Further, to fulfill their needs, an institute has to focus on each NBA quality parameter. But among all NBA quality parameters, student’s performance is highly desirable quality parameter. Practical implications This study will help top management of engineering institutions in making better policies and strategies for preparing their quality framework. These strategies will indirectly fulfill the customer needs that help in attracting more number of students toward those institutes. Originality/value In India, NBA is one of the leading bodies that monitor the quality of education. On the other hand, the institution has to satisfy the need of customer of education sector; therefore, prioritization of NBA quality parameter as per student’s need is one of the important needs that will help engineering institution to focus on a certain parameter to get a good quality certificate and also attract a number of meritorious students.

This study aims to analyze consumer perceptions of the level of importance and performance of companies related to Ice Coconut Long Black products and to develop appropriate strategies for improving the quality of Ice Coconut Long Black products at Titik Temu Coffee Shop, Seminyak, Badung. This study uses a survey method with the distribution of questionnaires, namely an analysis of the importance and performance of Ice Coconut Long Black products and an analysis of the importance of consumers of Ice Coconut Long Black products and competing products namely Coconut Espresso Martini at Missibu Coffee Shop. These analyze use two methods, namely the Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) method and the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) method. In the analysis of the IPA, there are 3 attributes in the first quadrant of cartesius diagram, which is the top priority. Such product taste, product color and product price. While the value of the total suitability obtained is still below 100%, which is equal to 89,15%, which means that the importance of consumers have not been fulfilled by the performance of the company/product. Whereas QFD produces the priority of increasing product attributes starts from the product’s taste because it gets the highest repair ratio value, while the priority of increasing technical parameters starts from controlling the quality of ice cubes, coconut water and espresso because it gets the highest level of technical importance. Purpose This study aimed to determine the effect of role conflict and role ambiguity on job satisfaction, self-efficacy and nurses’ adaptability and improvement in service quality by analysis of quality function deployment. Design/methodology/approach This study used a cross-sectional study design. The research sample of 115 nurses and 299 patients was obtained through the use of probability sampling techniques. Data were statistically analyzed using Spearman’s test to see the correlation between independent and dependent variables. Kruskal–Wallis and one-way ANOVA were used to see the differences and quality function deployment analysis was conducted to improve service quality. Findings The study concluded there is influence of role conflict and role ambiguity on job satisfaction, self-efficacy and nurses’ adaptability. There are differences in role ambiguity in the inpatient unit, critical room and the emergency room. Practical implications The quality of service in the hospital can be improved by evaluating the behavior of nurses on the quality of service perceived by the patient. In addition, the necessary improvement of discipline and commitment between physicians and nurses in improving the quality of services at the hospital. Originality/value With this measure, the management of nursing at the hospital can translate patient’s needs into specific plans to produce products and services that bring together the needs of the patient to service quality.

PurposeThis study aims to integrate the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method with quality function deployment (QFD) which helps to improve the weight of technical attributes by calculating the closeness of particular attributes with the best attributes and farthest from the worst technical attributes simultaneously.Design/methodology/approachFor the fulfilment of the aim of the study, detailed literature is reviewed and a suitable tool for score calculation has been selected. Further, the proposed methodology is applied in a literature-based case study, and a new weight is calculated and compared with the previous weight.FindingsThe finding of the study suggests that higher weightage is assigned to those technical attributes which is very close to the best technical attribute, and lower weightage is assigned to the technical attributes which are very close to worst technical attributes. Therefore, the weight calculated with the help of the proposed methodology will suggest to optimally invest the resources on technical attributes so that the maximum customer satisfaction is achieved.Practical implicationsThe proposed method will help in better score calculation of QFD. Therefore, the use of the proposed method will help in better product and service design for maximum customer satisfaction.Social implicationsProposed methodology aims to help managers, administrators, QFD practitioners and product/service designers to design a new product/service or mange the quality of existing product/services in an effective way.Originality/valueThis is the first kind of study, in which modification in score calculation has been proposed. This modification will help in the better assignment of resources for maximum customer satisfaction.

PurposeThe education sector acts as an input for every other sector and contributes around 7% to the service industry; hence, it is important to identify, measure and analyze the drivers that impact the delivered service quality.Design/methodology/approachThis paper used different approaches to identify measure and analyze the drivers that impact the service quality. In addition to a thorough literature review, qualitative tools like brainstorming, the focused group technique, and the survey technique have been used. Decision-making tools like the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and a quantitative tool, one-sample t-test, with the help of MINITAB software, were used to analyze the inputs received from 179 experts. By using the stated approach, the planned research outcomes have been achieved.FindingsQuality of teachers, quality of students, quality of policies, and quality of facilities have been identified as the key drivers that impact quality of education. The paper highlights that the people quality drivers play a significantly important role in the quality of education when compared to the quality of non-people drivers. From the statistical analysis of the hypotheses, it was inferred that the People quality consisting of the quality of a teacher and the quality of students are the two prominent drivers to the Quality of education. This paper demonstrates the importance of the quality of a teacher and its significance to the quality of education. The recommendations made might be considered for the implementation, which can improve the quality of education in the country.Research limitations/implicationsThis paper is focused on the data collected from the experts in the top-ranked management institutes only. The data from the experts from undergraduate institutions and other management institutes could have added more value.Practical implicationsIn the paper, the drivers were identified and further analyzed to suggest that teacher quality is a dominant driver of education quality. The findings also suggest that there should be a high focus on having a great quality teacher as compared to the facilities. The weights identified will enable the researcher to arrive at the overall quality scores of any Institute. As a part of the process, the user just needs to collect the ratings from the end customers (the parents of the students) against each driver, and the institute level scores can be derived. These scores can then be used by the Institute's management to analyze the results and improve upon the weak areas to improve the delivered service quality in the education sector.Originality/valueA holistic approach to exploring major drivers that impact the quality of education is a new approach. Moreover, using different tools like AHP, hypothesis testing, t-test, using the coefficient of variation in a single paper has not been attempted before. The revalidations of accepted hypotheses with respondents is also a new approach.

AbstrakThe data of year 2006 show that amount of polyclinic patients care unit of BRSUD�45� Kuningan is the most among other polyclinics. The result of observation and interviews tell that the degree of satisfaction got by the patients is in the level(category) of middle (enough) and the degree of importance is in the level of high (important). The purpose of doing this research is to analyze the quality of service to improve the patients satisfaction using Quality Function Deployment method involving 96 respondents. The data were taken from the result of applying quality Function Deployment method in BRSUD�45� Kuningan tells that the attribute owning the highest level of importance is the competence or the skill of the doctors in handling their works while the attribute owning the lowest level is the availability of the public service facilities such as public phones, televisions, and ATM. The attribute that owns the most satisfaction value is the dressy of the officials while the attribute that owns the least satisfaction value is the comfortable, hygiene water closet. PurposeThe aim of the study reported in this article was to establish whether the quality of clothes of a given brand is perceived and assessed by consumers at the same level. An additional purpose was to identify the features that characterize the quality of popular, among Polish young female consumers, clothing brands and to classify them according to their quality level (perceived and assessed).Design/methodology/approachThe article presents two approaches to consumer assessment of the quality of clothes: the survey method, in which the product quality was determined by 320 Polish female young respondents (19–25) based on their own previous experiences and impressions related to a particular clothing brand, and a direct assessment of shirts of selected brands using a sensory quality assessment method, a five-point hedonic scale with the verbal anchor (115 evaluators).FindingsThe research has revealed a significant difference between the perception of selected quality features of brands and the consumer assessment of the products. The perception maps developed based on the PROFIT analysis (PROperty FITting) as well as on cluster analysis provided interesting information about the situation of selected brands and their features in comparison with others and allowed to identify strong and weak features characterizing a given category.Research limitations/implicationsThis study has several limitations. First and foremost, the research results cannot be generalized to all consumers because they encompass the results from one national context and one population of respondents (young females). It should also be noted that the conducted research comprises only the most popular clothing brands available on the Polish market, in particular, the fast fashion segment brands. Furthermore, it would be advisable to carry out a sensory assessment of the quality of other clothing items offered under the brand names investigated.Practical implicationsThis research could be a valuable source of information for clothing company managers, thanks to which they could better manage their brand and its position on the market. When undertaking marketing activities consisting of building positive perceptions about the product, it is important to make sure that the product offers an attractive sensory experience. When real quality deviates from consumer perceptions about the quality, managers should take corrective actions to restore and even improve the brand image in the eyes of the consumer, as well as to ensure the brand and the products offered under it a stable position on the market.Originality/valueBy comparing two approaches to consumer quality assessment, discrepancies between declared and real (sensory) quality of clothes have been identified and the distinctive features that differentiate selected brands regarding their quality level have been indicated.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate to what extent quality function deployment (QFD) can be used in quality improvement rather than design activities. Design/methodology/approach A framework was developed for implementation of QFD as a quality improvement tool. A case study approach is used to test this framework, and quality issues were analyzed using the framework in a ceramic tile manufacturing company. Findings The results showed considerable improvements in the critical quality characteristics identified and sales rates, demonstrating the potential of QFD to be used in assessing and prioritizing areas of improvement, and converting them into measurable process or product requirements. Research limitations/implications One case study was completed. More studies would be beneficial to support current findings. Practical implications This framework provides structured approach and guidelines for practitioners in adapting QFD for quality improvements in existing products or processes. Originality/value This study proposes a new framework to use QFD in quality improvement activities, expanding its application areas. Moreover, the results of the literature study performed provide a valuable collection of practical QFD implementation examples.
