In this research, a new application of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-MEMS infrared (IR) sensor and emitter is proposed. Thorough investigations of IR properties including absorption and emission were proceeded with careful calibration and measurement with a CMOS thermoelectric sensor. The thermocouples of the sensor consist of aluminum and n-polysilicon layers which are fabricated with the TSMC 0.35 μm CMOS process and MEMS post-process. In order to improve the adhesion of rGO, a sensing area at the center of the membrane is formed with an array of holes, which is easy for the drop-coating of rGO material upon the sensing region. To evaluate the performance of the IR sensor with rGO, different conditions of the IR thermal radiation experiments were arranged. The results show that the responsivity of our proposed CMOS-MEMS IR sensor with rGO increases by about 77% compared with the sensor without rGO. For different IR absorption incident angles, the measurement of field of view shows that the CMOS-MEMS IR sensor with rGO has a smaller view angle, which can be applied for the application of long-distance measuring. In addition, characteristics of the proposed thermopile are estimated and analyzed with comparisons to the available commercial sensors by the experiments.

Metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE) is applied for fabrication of silicon nanowires (SiNWs). We have shown the effect of amorphous sheath of SiNWs by treating the nanowires with SF6 and the resulting reduction of absorption bandwidth, i.e. making SiNWs semi-transparent in near-infrared (IR). For the first time, by treating the fabricated SiNWs with copper containing HF∕H2O2∕H2O solution, we have generated crystalline nanowires with broader light absorption spectrum, up to λ = 1 μm. Both the absorption and photo-luminescence (PL) of the SiNWs are observed from visible to IR wavelengths. It is found that the SiNWs have PL at visible and near Infrared wavelengths, which may infer presence of mechanisms such as forbidden gap transitions other can involvement of plasmonic resonances. Non-radiative recombination of excitons is one of the reasons behind absorption of SiNWs. Also, on the dielectric metal interface, the absorption mechanism can be due to plasmonic dissipation or plasmon-assisted generation of excitons in the indirect band-gap material. Comparison between nanowires with and without metallic nanoparticles has revealed the effect of nanoparticles on absorption enhancement. The broader near IR absorption, paves the way for applications like hyperthermia of cancer while the optical transition in near IR also facilitates harvesting electromagnetic energy at a broad spectrum from visible to IR.

Abstracta-Si:H films were prepared by hot wire chemical vapor deposition. One group was deposited at a substrate temperature of Ts=250°C with varied hydrogen-dilution ratio, 0<R<10; the other group was deposited with fixed R=3 but a varied Ts from 150 to 550°C. IR, Raman and PL spectra were studied. The Raman results indicate that there is a threshold value for the microstructure transition from a- to μc-Si. The threshold is found to be R ≈ 2 at Ts = 250°C and Ts ≈ 200°C at R=3. The IR absorption of Si-H at 640 cm-1 was used to calculate the hydrogen content, CH. CH decreased monotonically when either R or Ts increased. The Si-H stretching mode contains two peaks at 2000 and 2090 cm-1. The ratio of the integral absorption peaks I2090/(I2090+I2090) showed a sudden increase at the threshold of microcrystallinity. At the same threshold, the PL features also indicate a sudden change from a- to μc-Si., i.e. the low energy PL band becomes dominant and the PL total intensity decreases. We attribute the above IR and PL changes to the contribution of microcrystallinity, especially the c-Si gain-boundaries.

The aqueous environment and ionic surrounding are the most important factors determining the conformation of DNA and its functioning in the cell. The specificity of the interaction between DNA and cations is especially pronounced with a decrease in water activity. In this work, we studied the B-A transition in high molecular weight DNA with a decrease of humidity in the film with different contents of Na+ ions using FTIR spectroscopy. The IR spectrum of DNA is not only very sensitive to the state of its secondary structure, but also allows us to estimate the amount of water bound to DNA. Upon dehydration of the DNA film, changes characteristic of the B-A transition were observed in the IR absorption spectrum. Using thermogravimetric analysis, it was shown that the degree of DNA hydration reaches the saturation level at a relative humidity of 60% and decreases slightly upon further drying. It has been established that with increasing Na+ concentration, the amount of water strongly bound to DNA decreases. Along with it, sodium ions destroy the hydration shell of DNA and are able to interact directly with phosphate groups.

Background and Objective: The top approach to deliver poorly soluble drugs is the use of a highly soluble form. The present study was conducted to enhance the solubility and dissolution of a poorly aqueous soluble drug nevirapine via a pharmaceutical cocrystal. Another objective of the study was to check the potential of the nevirapine cocrystal in the dosage form. Methods: A neat and liquid assisted grinding method was employed to prepare nevirapine cocrystals in a 1:1 and 1:2 stoichiometric ratio of drug:coformer by screening various coformers. The prepared cocrystals were preliminary investigated for melting point and saturation solubility. The selected cocrystal was further confirmed by Infrared Spectroscopy (IR), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and Xray Powder Diffraction (XRPD). Further, the cocrystal was subjected to in vitro dissolution study and formulation development. Results: The cocrystal of Nevirapine (NVP) with Para-Amino Benzoic Acid (PABA) coformer prepared by neat grinding in 1:2 ratio exhibited greater solubility. The shifts in IR absorption bands, alterations in DSC thermogram, and distinct XRPD pattern showed the formation of the NVP-PABA cocrystal. Dissolution of NVP-PABA cocrystal enhanced by 38% in 0.1N HCl. Immediate release tablets of NVP-PABA cocrystal exhibited better drug release and less disintegration time. Conclusion: A remarkable increase in the solubility and dissolution of NVP was obtained through the cocrystal with PABA. The cocrystal also showed great potential in the dosage form which may provide future direction for other drugs.
