The review presents generalized current data on sperm aneuploidy in healthy (fertile) men and infertile male patients with a normal karyotype and with chromosomal abnormalities. The mechanisms of aneuploidy in germ cells, factors affecting of its level, the relationship with defects of spermatogenesis, meiosis, decreased sperm parameters, as well as the effect of sperm aneuploidy on male fertility, embryo development and gestation are discussed.

Background: The correlation between methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene polymorphisms and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains controversial. Objectives: We performed this study to better assess the relationship between MTHFR gene polymorphisms and the likelihood of HCC. Methods: A systematic research of PubMed, Medline, and Embase was performed to retrieve relevant articles. ORs and 95% CIs were calculated. Results: A total of 15 studies with 8,378 participants were analyzed. In overall analyses, a significant association with the likelihood of HCC was detected for the rs1801131 polymorphism with fixed-effect models (FEMs) in recessive comparison (p = 0.002, OR 0.62, 95% CI 0.43–0.82). However, no positive results were detected for the rs1801133 polymorphism in any comparison. Further subgroup analyses revealed that the rs1801131 polymorphism was significantly associated with the likelihood of HCC in Asians with both FEMs (recessive model: p < 0.0001, OR 0.42, 95% CI 0.29–0.62; allele model: p = 0.004, OR 1.20, 95% CI 1.06–1.35) and random-effect models (recessive model: p = 0.002, OR 0.47, 95% CI 0.29–0.75). Nevertheless, we failed to detect any significant correlation between the rs1801133 polymorphism and HCC. Conclusions: Our findings indicated that the rs1801131 polymorphism may serve as a genetic biomarker of HCC in Asians.

Background: As an infectious disease closely related to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, autoimmunity, inflammation, environment and heredity, the relationship between the single nucleotide polymorphism of elongase 2 gene and the susceptibility to tuberculosis is still unknown. Methods: Between January 2016 and November 2018, a hospital-based case-control study was conducted. This epidemiological survey was conducted in both hospitals every three months. rs3798719, rs1570069, and rs2236212 in ELOVL2 gene were detected by Sanger sequencing. Results: Stratified by gender, the genotypes and allele frequencies of rs3798719, rs1570069 and rs2236212 showed significant differences between the two groups (χ2 = 6.987, P = 0.030), Genetic modeling showed that rs3798719 was statistically different in the overdominance model (χ2 = 4.784, OR = 1.414, 95% CI: 1.036-1.929, P < 0.05). The polymorphism of rs2236212 between male TB patients and healthy controls was statistically different in the dominance model. (χ2 = 4.192, OR = 0.507; 95% CI: 0.262-0.981, P < 0.05). Conclusion: The rs3798719 of ELOVL2 gene may be associated with susceptibility to TB in female population and the rs2236212 of ELOVL2 gene may be associated with TB incidence in male patients.

Both sleep–wake disturbance and malnutrition are common in cirrhosis and might be associated with similar adverse outcomes, such as impaired health-related quality of life, hepatic encephalopathy, and sarcopenia, but there is no study investigating the relationship between these two. We aimed to explore the relationship between sleep–wake disturbance [estimated by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)] and malnutrition risk [estimated by the Royal Free Hospital-Nutritional Prioritizing Tool (RFH-NPT)]. About 150 patients with cirrhosis were prospectively recruited. The nutritional risk is classified as low (0 points), moderate (1 point), and high (2–7 points) according to the RFH-NPT score. A global PSQI &gt;5 indicated poor sleepers. Furthermore, multivariate linear regression analyses were performed to determine the relationship between sleep–wake disturbance and malnutrition. The median PSQI was seven, and RFH-NPT was two in the entire cohort, with 60.67 and 56.67% rated as poor sleep quality and high malnutrition risk, respectively. Patients with cirrhosis with poor sleep quality had significantly higher RFH-NPT score (3 vs. 1, P = 0.007). Our multivariate analyses indicated that male patients (β = 0.279, P &lt; 0.001), ascites (β = 0.210, P = 0.016), and PSQI (β = 0.262, P = 0.001) were independent predictors of malnutrition. In addition, the differences regarding PSQI score were more significant in male patients, as well as those &gt;65 years or with Child-Turcotte-Pugh class A/B (CTP-A/B) or the median model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) &lt;15. Taken together, the sleep–wake disturbance is strongly correlated with high malnutrition risk in patients with cirrhosis. Given sleep–wake disturbance is remediable, it is tempting to incorporate therapies to reverse poor sleep quality for improving nutritional status in patients with cirrhosis.

Introduction: Both premature ejaculation(PE) and erectile dysfunction(ED) are prevalent sexual health disorders that have been inadequately investigated in Malaysia, a multiethnic and conservative nation.The objective of the study was to study the relationship between PE and ED, and other common mental health issues, i.e. anxiety and depression in Malaysian urban population. Methods: The diagnosis for PE was established by clinical diagnosis using DSM-5 and ISSM definition criteria for PE, whereas a diagnosis of ED was established by the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire. Anxiety and depression levels were detected from the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results: Based on DSM-V and ISSM clinical diagnosis for PE, the prevalence of PE was found to be 25%. Erectile dysfunction (p = 0.035, OR = 3.315, 95% CI 1.088, 10.103) and severe anxiety (p = 0.020, OR = 7.656, 95% CI 1.383, 42.396) significantly predicted presence of PE. Conclusion: There was a strong association between PE and ED and between PE and anxiety. Routine examination for PE in male patients should address the issue and the management of both ED and anxiety among PE patients, especially in an urban Malaysian clinical and medical care setting.

Abstract Background: This study compared the relationship between thyroid hormones and lipid metabolism/body fat content in euthyroid male patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in China. Methods: A total of 64 male patients who were diagnosed as T2DM and 64 non-diabetic males who underwent health examination were matched according to age at a 1:1 ratio. Results: The 32 subjects in each sub-group showed differences in age, body mass index (BMI), mean arterial pressure, waist circumference, visceral fat content, body fat percentage, HbA1c, HOMA-IR, FT3, TSH, HDL-c, adiponectin, leptin, visfatin and TNF-α (all P < 0.05). In the overall population, FT3 was positively correlated with body fat percentage (r=0.21, P=0.02), and negatively correlated with HOMA-IR (r=-0.18, P=0.04) and visfatin (r=-0.47, P <0.01); TSH was positively correlated with body fat percentage (r=0.23, P=0.01). In the T2DM-OB group FT3 was positively correlated with BMI (r=0.45, P <0.05), visceral fat content (r=0.50, P <0.05), and body fat percentage (r=0.44, P <0.05); FT4 was positively correlated with visceral fat content (r=0.38, P <0.05); and TSH was positively correlated with HOMA-IR (r=0.39, P <0.05). Conclusion: TSH increased in obese people and FT3 was lower in patients with T2DM.

Introduction: The effectiveness of fertility treatments is influenced by the health care professionals’ knowledge regarding infertility as well as their empathy. Aim: The aim of the study was to examine infertility-related knowledge and perceptions of emotional and mind/body consequences of infertility among medical students. Methods: A questionnaire design was used. Data were obtained from 112 medical university students (76 women, 36 men) who participated involuntary and compensation-free. Results: Medical students’ knowledge concerning infertility proved to be incomplete and ambiguous. Subjects underestimated the presence of mind/body and emotional symptoms caused by infertility in men particularly, and overestimated some emotional concerns in women, e.g. sadness. Conclusions: Medical students have gaps in their subject-specific knowledge, so that they need more (even practical) information regarding infertility during their studies. Students’ conceptions about emotional and physical consequences of infertility are distorted by stereotypes. The risk of these biases is that it could make it difficult to perceive patients in a non-distorted way, especially infertile male patients. Orv. Hetil., 2015, 156(3), 105–112.
