Obesity caused by a high-fat diet leads to an altered reproductive hormonal profile, including impaired semen quality. Antioxidants can overcome these conditions. One of the well-known sources of antioxidants is in the rambutan fruit peel extract. This research aimed to figure the effect of rambutan fruit peel extract towards total sperm count in Wistar rats induced with high-fat feed. The study design used post-test only control group,  subjects were 30 male Wistar rats divided into five groups: Group I (Positive Control) was given high-fat feed, Group II (Treatment Control Group) was given 15mg/kg BW rambutan fruit peel extract, whereas group III, IV, V (Treatment Group) were given an extract of rambutan skin with a dosage of 15, 30, and 60 mg/kg BW, respectively. Treatment was administered for 81 days. This study showed that rambutan fruit peel extract with doses of 15, 30, and 60 mg/kg BW has significantly increased total sperm count in Wistar rats induced with high-fat feed. The outcome using Kruskal Wallis shows a result of p-value 0,010 (CI 95%). Antioxidant compounds found in rambutan fruit peel extract significantly increase total sperm count in Wistar rats induced with high-fat feed, with the highest efficacy on the dose of 15mg/kg BW.   Keywords: Fruit Peel Rambutan Extract; ; ;

Sow mortality is a great challenge in intensive pig production worldwide. The aim of this study was to forensically examine the reason of sow death for a two-year period on two farms with intensive pig keeping, based on available data. In sows with a greater number of farrowings (over VII) greater number of deaths was found. Seasonality has an impact on sow mortality, in the summer period a larger number of sow death was found. Poor sow condition that usually occurs in the second half of lactation and after weaning, are the predisposition to the factors that lead to the sow death. On both examined farms in more than 60% of dead sows Clostridium spp. and Escherichia coli were isolated. In order to reduce the mortality of sows more attention should be paid to the older sows with a larger number of farrowings, provide better conditions in summer, cooling, and pay more attention to sows during the period from farrowing to the next insemination, respectively.

Purple sweet potato has the high anthocyanin content. The anthocyanin content in purple sweet potato skin is higher than the anthocyanin in the tubers, namely 52.84-729.74 mg/100g while the tubers are 110.51 mg/100g. Natural dyes that have the potential to be extracted include anthocyanins. This research aimed to test anthocyanin dyes in purple sweet potato peel extract as the substitute for crystal violet in gram staining. The type of research used Quasi Experiments. This research was conducted in the Microbiology Laboratory of the Hasanuddin University Medical Faculty. In this research, extraction was carried out by using the solvent of Ethanol : Acetic Acid : Water (25: 1: 5). Furthermore, gram staining was carried out by using purple sweet potato peel extract using a concentration of 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, 100% and crystal violet as positive control. The results of this research indicate that the staining used purple sweet potato peel extract concentrations of 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% in gram-positive Staphylococcus bacteria isolates showed poor bacterial staining results because the bacteria were not purple when compared to crystal violet dye. Where as at the concentration of 100% it showed good bacterial staining results because the bacteria was purple. Meanwhile, gram-negative e.coli bacteria isolates at the concentration of 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, 100% showed good bacterial staining results because the bacteria were red. Suggestions for further research to do maceration longer.

Abstract. Androgens and estrogens play a key role regarding sexual life and reproduction. Along with hypotestosteronemia, obese men exhibit a 2-fold increase in estradiol concentration, adversely infl uencing these parameters. Estrogens and adipokines also infl uence bone metabolism, exerting a direct effect on vitamin D, calcium homeostasis and bone health. Bariatric procedures normalize some sex hormones, and may reverse several obesity-related conditions. Estrogens levels may remain elevated postoperatively, and despite its protective effect on the skeleton, bariatric patients are more prone to fractures when compared to the general population. Multiple nutritional defi cits are common after bariatric interventions, and hypozincemia is the most likely to negatively infl uence reproductive parameters. Zinc is an essential element for normal spermatogenesis, and severe hypozincemia is associated with infertility in both sexes. Vitamin D also acts as a regulator of several enzymes involved in steroid hormone production, and its defi ciency could impair reproductive function. Few studies have addressed changes in sex hormones and in reproductive function in the male bariatric population, as they represent a minority of surgical candidates. Although obesity rates and burden are similar for both sexes, society is more lenient with the obese male. Moreover, 73 % of overweight/obese men are satisfi ed with their health, causing body weight and obesity-related health problems to increase when they opt for bariatric surgery. In the present article, we discuss shifts of sex hormones before and after bariatric surgery, surgery impact on semen quality, skeletal health and nutrients, and new research directions regarding links between vitamin D, zinc, androgens and reproduction.
