Background: Diabetes mellitus, a major lifestyle disease is undoubtedly the most challenging public health problem of 21st century with a worldwide prevalence of 387 million (8.3%).  The objective of this study was to get an estimate of the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and associated factors in a sample of adult population in a peri-urban area of West Tripura.Methods: In a cross-sectional study, prevalence of diabetes mellitus was found among adult population of a peri-urban area (Dukli) of west Tripura from April 2016 to May 2016. Multistage random sampling was followed to include 76 participants. Taking house as a sampling unit, every 5th house was chosen for this study. From every selected house, one adult participant was chosen by simple random sampling until desired sample size was attained. Collected data was compiled and analyzed with the help of statistical package for social sciences (SPSS 16.0.). Chi-square, Fischer exact test was applied to find out association.Results: The mean age of the study participants was 42.21±17.65 years, comprised of 23.7% male and 76.3% female. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus was 17.1% among study participants. Diabetes was found highest in 39-58-year age group (37.5%). Males were more affected with diabetes mellitus (22.2%) compared to females (15.5%). The study also revealed a significant association of diabetes mellitus with family history of diabetes mellitus (p value 0.00).Conclusions: Present study showed very high prevalence of diabetes mellitus among adult population. Healthy lifestyle measures might reduce burden of diabetes mellitus which could be evaluated in future research.

Aims and Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension in the young adults of age 18-39 years, who have undergone pre-employment screening at a tertiary care hospital and document their parameters. Materials and methods: Records of all candidates of either gender belonging to the age group 18 completed years to 39 completed years, who had st th undergone pre-employment screening during the period of 1 January 2016 till 30 June 2020, preserved in the Department of Medical Examination were examined for the purpose of this study. The candidates who had been diagnosed as hypertensive or diabetic or both were tabulated. The results and values were tabulated in MS Excel. The statistical software JASPwas used for calculations. Results: Records of 12257 candidates were scrutinized, out of which 9176 were males and 3081 were females. Atotal of 182 candidates were found to be Diabetic, Hypertensive or both. Majority of the candidates were males (175 out of 182, 96.15%). The prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus was 179 and that of Hypertension was 1362 per 100,000 population. Conclusion: Diabetes and/or Hypertension are not uncommon in the young population of 18 to 39 years of age. Most of them are males. End organ affection can start early. Proper screening programmes can identify these cases early and ensure timely intervention.

To estimate the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) among the patients with acromegaly residing in the Moscow region (MR). A total of 93 patients aged from 48.0 to 64.5 (mean 57.5) years presenting with acromegaly from 7.5 to 20.25 (mean 13.0) years in duration were available for the examination. Twenty seven of these patients developed diabetes mellitus prior to acromegaly. Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) for diagnostics of DM was performed in 66 patients. The overall prevalence of diabetes mellitus among the patients with acromegaly was estimated at 51.6% which is higher than that in the general population of the Moscow region and worldwide (2.3% and 8.3% respectively). The prevalence of DM among women was higher than in men (55.1% and 33.5% respectively; p<0.05). It increased with age (from 14.3% in the patients aged between 36 and 45 years to 48.3% at the age above 56 years) and with duration of acromegaly (from 40.6% in the patients with the duration of the disease up to 8 years to 60.5% in those with acromegaly during more than 15 years; p<0.05). Asymptomatic diabetes was diagnosed in 34.8% of the 69 patients which is also higher than the prevalence of asymptomatic type 2 diabetes mellitus in a random sample from the adult population of MR and in the group with the enhanced risk of DM2. The prevalence of DM among the patients in the controllable and uncontrolled phases of acromegaly was 57.1% and 49.2% respectively (p>0.05). The prevalence of DM2 among the patients with acromegaly is significantly higher than in the world's general population; it depends on the patients' age and sex and as well as on the duration of acromegaly.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in the Japanese-Brazilian community of Mombuca in relation to risk factors (FR) for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study with 131 individuals of Japanese ancestry (69% first generation), aged 20 years or more, submitted to socio-cultural, anthropometric, and biochemistry evaluation. RESULTS: Of the individuals studied (n = 131, age = 55.1 ± 15.9 years), 58.8% were women. The prevalence of DM2 and IGT were 13.7% and 14.5%, respectively. Regarding RF, 76.3% presented dyslipidemia, 52.7% abdominal obesity, 48.1% arterial hypertension, and 42.3% whole body obesity. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of DM2, IGT, and RF in this Japanese-Brazilian community was higher than in the adult population of the city of Ribeirão Preto-SP, Brazil, suggesting an increase in risk conditions for these morbidities.
