A total of 72 morphologically different actinomycetes isolates were isolated from samples collected at different regions of Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India and screened for its antibacterial activity against fish and shellfish pathogens. All actinomycetes isolates were screened for antibacterial activity by cross streak method against the selected fish and shellfish bacterial pathogens including Aeromonas caviae, Aeromonas hydroplila, Edwardsiella tarda, Vibrio anguillarum and Vibrio harveyi. Secondary screening of antagonistic isolates by well diffusion method leads to the identification of potential isolate. Culture conditions for the potential isolate were optimized for maximal growth and yield of the ethyl acetate (EA) crude extract. The potential isolate was characterized by molecular taxonomy and phylogeny and identified as Streptomyces species and named as Streptomyces sp. VITNK9. The 16S rDNA nucleotide sequence was searched through the GenBank database and showed 83% similarity to Streptomyces vinaceusdrappus. The EA extract prepared from Streptomyces sp. VITNK9 showed moderate antagonistic activity accessed by the formation of zone of growth inhibition against, Aeromonas caviae (15.33 mm), Aeromonas hydrophila (17.66 mm), Edwardsiella tarda (18.33 mm), Vibrio anguillarum (14.33 mm) and Vibrio harveyi (14.33 mm). The MIC value of EA extract was ranged between 0.03-0.125 mg mL-1. The GC-MS spectrum of the ethyl acetate extract revealed the presence of two major compounds, pyrrolo [1,2-A] pyrazine-1,4-Dione (56.67%) and Hexahydro-3-(2-Methylpropyl) (27.91%), respectively. The results of the study suggest that Streptomyces sp. VITNK9 is a potential source for antagonistic secondary metabolites against fish and shellfish bacterial pathogens.

One of the serious problems faced by health and food security is the spread of drug-resistant zoonotic aquatic bacterial pathogens. For this reason, identification and application of new antibacterial agents are required. In this study, inhibitory effects of thiazole, imidazolidine and tetrahydropyrimidine derivatives and silver/polyvinyl alcohol (Ag/PVA) nanocomposites were evaluated against three important zoonotic fish bacterial pathogens namely Streptococcus iniae, Edwardsiella tarda and Aeromonas hydrophila. Ag/PVA nanocomposite was found to inhibit growth of all tested bacteria, the highest activity was observed against S. iniae with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 256 μg ml-1 and inhibition zone diameter (IZD) of 10.2 mm. No inhibitory effects were observed with imidazolidines10a-c, tetrahydropyrimidines 10d-e and thiazoles 6a-c. Among heterocyclic compounds, only thiazole derivatives 6d and 8 had inhibitory effects onS. iniae and E. tarda with MIC values of 32-256 μg ml-1 but lacked antibacterial activity against A. hydrophila.

Bacterial pathogens are a major cause of infectious diseases in aquatic animals. The abuse of antibiotics in the aquatic industry has led to the proliferation of antibiotic resistance. It is therefore essential to develop more effective and safer strategies to increase the efficacy and extend the life span of the antibiotics used in aquaculture. In this study, we show that six aquaculture bacterial pathogens (i.e., Aeromonas hydrophila, Vibrio alginolyticus, Edwardsiella tarda, Streptococcus iniae, Vibrio harveyi, and Vibrio fluvialis) in the stationary phase can be rapidly killed after immersion in gentamicin- or neomycin-containing, ion-free solutions for a few minutes. Such hypoionic shock treatment enhances the bacterial uptake of gentamicin in an ATP-dependent manner. Importantly, we demonstrate, as a proof of concept, that gentamicin under hypoionic shock conditions can effectively kill A. hydrophila in vivo in a skin infection model of zebrafish (Danio rerio), completely curing the infected fish. Given that pathogenic bacteria generally adhere to the skin surface and gills of aquatic animals, our strategy is of potential significance for bacterial infection control, especially for small-scale economic fish farming and ornamental fish farming. Further, the combined treatment can be completed within 5 min with a relatively small volume of solution, thus minimizing the amount of residual antibiotics in both animals and the environment.

Betta ornamental fish of marble strain is a strain which is prefered by the hobbyists, because of its unique color, expensive price, and difficult to obtain the fish color strains. Therefore strain marble betta fish is still dominant for export quality for national and international contests. The aim of this study was to observe the growth and color performance of the crossedbreed marble strains of wild betta, Betta imbellis crossed with Betta splendens. The hybrids of B. imbellis (f) x B. splendens (m) (D) had a specific length and weight rate, (1,113 ± 0.04%/day; 2,531 ± 0.14%/day; 26.61 ± 2.02 mm) which was better than that of the hybrids B. imbellis (m) x B. splendens (f) (C) (1,099 ± 0.02%/day; 2,244 ± 0.13%/day; 25.97 ± 1.33 mm; and 0.0027 ± 0.0003 mm). However, the survival rate of the C hybrids (42.19 ± 11.42%) was higher than those of D (33.67%-17.08%). Based on the obtained results of the color identification the hybrids had as many as 15 characters of color, homozygous strains of marble which became the target of as much as 1%.

Enteric septicaemia of catfish was first detected in 1976 as an economically significant disease associated with commercial catfish production. Initially, Edwardsiella ictaluri was a host specific pathogen of catfish species but has also been reported from other hosts other than the catfish such as the zebrafish. E. ictaluri has not been isolated in humans hence it is not a zoonotic infection. There has been no previous report of isolation of this organism in humans. This was a case report of a 5 year old boy who presented with fever, vomiting, passage of bloody stool of 6 days and abdominal pain of a day duration. In the case of this 5 year old boy who presented with features of dysentery, blood culture using BACTEC™ grew E. ictaluri. E. ictaluri may be a pathogen which can infect humans just like another closely related species, Edwardsiella tarda. Although, E. ictaluri has not been reported in humans, could this be the first case? Non availability of diagnostic technique appropriate for its diagnosis may explain the rare incidence of the organism in humans, hence many cases would have been treated without isolating the organism.

In the present work Trichodina reticulata and T. nobilis (Ciliophora: Trichodinidae) are morphologically characterised from ornamental freshwater fish culture in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The prevalence of infection and a list of comparative measurements are discussed. We examined "southern platyfish" Xiphophorus maculatus (n = 35), "goldfish" Carassius auratus (n = 31), "guppy" Poecilia reticulata (n = 20), "sailfin molly" Poecilia latipinna (n = 6), "beta" Betta splendens (n = 2) and "spotted headstander" Chilodus punctatus (n = 1). After being anesthetised in a benzocaine solution, fishes were examined for parasitological evaluation. A total of 51.57% fishes were parasitised by Trichodina spp. Carassius auratus was the most parasitised species, followed by X. maculatus and P. reticulata. Beta splendens, C. punctatus and P. latipinna were not parasitised by any trichodinid species. Two species of Trichodina were collected from the skin of fish: T. nobilis was found in C. auratus, P. reticulata and X. maculatus and T. reticulata was only observed in C. auratus. The importance of adequate handling in ornamental fish culture are also discussed.
