Vital sign monitoring is the process of recording human physiological signals in order to determine the mental stress level. High stress levels can prove to be dangerous especially for certain individuals such as autistic children who are not able to express mounting levels of stress before it leads to a full anxiety attack. This paper presents the prototype design of a real-time embedded device that accurately measures heart rate and galvanic skin response (GSR) in a non-invasive and non-intrusive way which is then used by the intelligent decision making module that uses fuzzy logic to determine the stress level of the user. Such a device could be used with autistic children in order to give early warning of an impending anxiety attack and help adults to prevent it from happening. The prototype was designed using Arduino mega platform and tested with 35 clinical patients in three experimental settings targeted to induce low stress, medium stress and high stress response. Initial results have shown that the device is capable of detecting and displaying the various stress levels efficiently.

A study conducted by Northwestern National Life stated that around 40% of workers experienced work-related stress. One of the professions who has a high risk of stress is nursing. This research aims to analyze the differences in stress levels of male and female nurses, employing a quantitative method and a cross sectional approach. There were 73 respondents, all of whom were nurses at X Hospital. Random sampling was used in this research. Chi Square test was carried out to determine the relationship between gender and work stress levels. The results showed that the majority of nurses were women (78.1% or 57 people) and male nurses accounted for the remaining 21.9% (16 people). A higher number of female nurses experience high stress (15.8%) compared to male nurses (12.5%). The result of the analysis of the gender effect on stress levels in X Hospital nurses generated p-value of 0.745 indicating that p value > 0.05. This result shows that there is no significant effect of gender on the stress level of nurses in Hospital X. Accordingly, from the hypothesis tested, it is proven that there is no significant relationship between the gender of nurses and work stress experienced. Keywords: Stress Level, Nurse, Hospital

Stress plays a critical role in our lives, impacting our productivity and our long-term physiological and psychological well-being. This has motivated the development of stress monitoring solutions to better understand stress, its impact on productivity and teamwork, and help users adapt their habits toward more sustainable stress levels. However, today's stress monitoring solutions remain obtrusive, requiring active user participation (e.g., self-reporting), interfering with people's daily activities, and often adding more burden to users looking to reduce their stress. In this paper, we introduce WiStress, the first system that can passively monitor a user's stress levels by relying on wireless signals. WiStress does not require users to actively provide input or to wear any devices on their bodies. It operates by transmitting ultra-low-power wireless signals and measuring their reflections off the user's body. WiStress introduces two key innovations. First, it presents the first machine learning network that can accurately and robustly extract heartbeat intervals (IBI's) from wireless reflections without constraints on a user's daily activities. Second, it introduces a stress classification framework that combines the extracted heartbeats with other wirelessly captured stress-related features in order to infer a subject's stress level. We built a prototype of WiStress and tested it on 22 different subjects across different environments in both stress-induced and free-living conditions. Our results demonstrate that WiStress has high accuracy (84%-95%) in inferring a person's stress level in a fully-automated way, paving the way for ubiquitous sensing systems that can monitor stress and provide feedback to improve productivity, health, and well-being.

Eye temperature assessed with infrared thermography is an adequate tool for stress level assessment in sport horses’ competitions having a moderate heritability. Serotonin and dopamine signal transduction-linked gene variants have been associated with anxiety-related traits in several species. In this study we examined the association between 10 gene variants in BDNF, COMT, HTR1A, TPH2 and SLC6A4 genes (and the haplotypes at SLC6A4 gene) with stress level (measured with eye temperature and heart rate) in 270 animals, 135 Spanish Trotter Horses (STH) participating in trotting races and 135 ‘Pura Raza Español’ (PRE) horses in dressage. Association analyses were performed using a unified mixed model (counting for population structure and individual relatedness) for the whole population and for each horse breed. The g.43865600G > A intronic gene variant located 11.0 kb downstream from the transcription start site of SLC6A4 gene was associated with an increase in eye temperature before competition with a relative contribution of this gene variant of 38.8% (P = 0.001), 31.8% just after (P = 0.001) and 29.8% 2 h after the competition (P = 0.003). In STH, the g.43865600G > A gene variant showed the same association with eye temperature before (P = 0.001, contribution 27.2%), just after (P = 0.0003, 29.0%) and after the competition (P = 0.002, 17.5%); and the c.*111G > A gene variant located at the 3′UTR region of COMT gene was associated with eye temperature 2 h after the competition (P = 0.001, 22.3%). These results showed that SLC6A4 and COMT gene variants are associated with stress level measured as eye temperature increase during competitions, and may be promising tools for genetic testing against resistance at high stress levels in trotter horses.

Objective This study aimed to examine the association between team stress level and adverse tracheal intubation (TI)-associated events during neonatal intubations. Study Design TIs from 10 academic neonatal intensive care units were analyzed. Team stress level was rated immediately after TI using a 7-point Likert scale (1 = high stress). Associations among team stress, adverse TI-associated events, and TI characteristics were evaluated. Result In this study, 208 of 2,009 TIs (10%) had high stress levels (score < 4). Oxygenation failure, hemodynamic instability, and family presence were associated with high stress level. Video laryngoscopy and premedication were associated with lower stress levels. High stress level TIs were associated with adverse TI-associated event rates (31 vs. 16%, p < 0.001), which remained significant after adjusting for potential confounders including patient, provider, and practice factors associated with high stress (odds ratio: 1.90, 96% confidence interval: 1.36–2.67, p < 0.001). Conclusion High team stress levels during TI were more frequently reported among TIs with adverse events.

Stress is an inescapable element of the modern age. Instances of untreated stress may lead to a reduction in the individual’s health, well-being and socio-economic situation. Stress management application development for wearable smart devices is a growing market. The use of wearable smart devices and biofeedback for individualized real-life stress reduction interventions has received less attention. By using our unobtrusive automatic stress detection system for use with consumer-grade smart bands, we first detected stress levels. When a high stress level is detected, our system suggests the most appropriate relaxation method by analyzing the physical activity-based contextual information. In more restricted contexts, physical activity is lower and mobile relaxation methods might be more appropriate, whereas in free contexts traditional methods might be useful. We further compared traditional and mobile relaxation methods by using our stress level detection system during an eight day EU project training event involving 15 early stage researchers (mean age 28; gender 9 Male, 6 Female). Participants’ daily stress levels were monitored and a range of traditional and mobile stress management techniques was applied. On day eight, participants were exposed to a ‘stressful’ event by being required to give an oral presentation. Insights about the success of both traditional and mobile relaxation methods by using the physiological signals and collected self-reports were provided.

College students deal with various events that can increase stress levels and negatively impact their lives. The study aimed to investigate the effect of solution-focused brief counseling (SFBC) on reducing college students' stress levels. The hypothesis suggested a decrease after comparing the stress level with SFBC before the intervention. The Participants consisted of 6 active postgraduate psychology students with moderate and high-stress levels. Furthermore, the study used a one-group pretest-posttest design, and the data were obtained through the Stress Scale for College Students (SSCS) and interview. The intervention used SFBC, and was conducted in four meetings. In analyzing the data, the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test was used to determine the difference in experimental group values between before and after the intervention. The result showed that there are differences in stress levels before and after the procedure, and its drastic decrease in participants was observed after the intervention.

Patients with diabetes mellitus have a high-stress level, this is because the treatment isundertaken such as diet, blood sugar control, drug consumption, and exercise. In addition, the risk of diseasecomplications that can be experienced by patients will also increase stress. Spiritual mindfulness based on bensonrelaxation affects the formation of positive cognitive (perception) responses in the brain. A good stress perceptionwill stimulate the hypothalamus to release a series of hormones that cause modulation of the physiological barrierof the immune response by decreasing the activation of the HPA axis and increasing activation of theparasympathetic nerve through the vagal stimulation. The purpose of this study was to prove the influence of spiritualmindfulness based on Benson relaxation in reducing stress levels of type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study was aquasi-experimental study using the pretest-posttest with control group design method. Respondents in this studywere 60 type 2 DM sufferers and were taken by simple random sampling technique and divided into two groupsnamely the intervention group and the control group. Stress level data is obtained using a questionnairemeasurement tool. The intervention group was given spiritual mindfulness based on Benson relaxation for fourweeks. The results of data analysis using t-Test with a significance of p <0.05. The stress level test results showeda significant difference between the intervention group and the control group with p-value = 0,000. Mindfulnessspiritual intervention based on Benson relaxation is effective against stress levels of people with type 2 diabetes.

This article is devoted to the problem of the linkage between the workers’ stress level and their level of satisfaction in the organization. The eff ects of negative influence of high stress levels on the level of satisfaction of employees and on the eff ectiveness of working have been revealed. The main stress factors at the workplace and managerial-organizational, medical, socio-psychological consequences have been considered. The results of the study of stress level and the level of satisfaction have been summarized, the causes of stress in the workplace have been identifi ed. The article off ers solutions to identifi ed problems, shows the importance of stress-management and presents comparative data of their eff ectiveness.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 infection is transmitted easily and quickly, and nurses constitute the riskiest group of healthcare workers. Therefore, they may experience high levels of stress and sleep problems. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted in order to evaluate the stress levels and sleep quality of nurses working during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: The cross-sectional study was conducted with 316 nurses working in a pandemic hospital in a city center. A descriptive form, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) were used to collect data. RESULTS: A positive, moderately significant correlation was found between the average PSQI score of nurses and the average perceived stress score (p≤0.001). Multiple regressions determined that shift work, stress level, a coworker having COVID-19, being out of home due to the risk of transmission, and having a person older than 65 in the home were effective predictors of sleep quality (R2 = 33.5, p≤0.001). Age, years worked, fear of infecting the family with COVID-19, receiving COVID-19 education, regular nutrition, and sleep quality were effective predictors of stress level (R2 = 32.2, p≤0.001). CONCLUSION: It was determined that nurses have low sleep quality and high stress levels during the pandemic process.
