This paper presents input coupled split power transmissions, arrangements and comparisons between the single and dual stage designs. Selection of the shift point between stages is discussed. Mathematical models for the transmission are constructed. An algorithm is developed for an efficiency optimization routine. The effects of the gear material strength, gear module, gear tooth width, and shaft offset on the efficiency are determined. Power loss contributions are presented in conjunction with their effect on the overall transmission efficiency.

Split power continuously variable transmissions can offer clutchless transitions from reverse through park and into the forward driving mode. The advantages of these transmissions can include elimination of a launch device while maintaining the continuous variability and fuel economy benefits of conventional CVTs. This paper offers further improvements to the transmission by providing an efficiency optimization methodology. Models for the transmission are constructed. A genetic algorithm is developed for the optimization routine. The effects of the gear material strength, gear module, gear tooth width, and shaft offset on the efficiency are determined. The bearing diameters and gear parameters are calculated and reviewed. Power loss contributions are presented in conjunction with their effect on the overall transmission efficiency. Recommendation for further improvements to the methodology is made.

Abstract Sustained casing pressure (SCP) is a very costly event for any operator either at production phase or at the end of a well’s lifecycle. SCP is a result of incomplete hydraulic isolation across hydrocarbon bearing zone. In one of the gas fields in Malaysia, notoriously known for shallow gas hazard, drilled development wells which have reportedly been suffering SCP. In the past, various improvements in cement slurry design and placement methods were deployed in order to provide complete zonal isolation, especially at the shallow gas sand, yet SCP issue was encountered occasionally. In the current development campaign, different strategy to providing annulus sealing was adopted. This paper discusses proactive steps taken in the slurry design, fit together with the dual stage cementing approach, as a primary means of placing cement above the shallow hazard interval. During the design phase, essential key parameters that would lead to successful placement of cement in the annulus as well as unique slurry design that suits for two stage cementing methods were studied. Risk involved in first stage cementing is one of the most important steps that should be analyzed in detail and put mitigation measures in place to ensure the second stage cement job can be performed as planned. In addition to the slurry properties, such as fluid-loss value, gas-tightness, etc., thickening time and top of cement (TOC) of the lead slurry in the first stage cement job has become enormously critical in designing dual stage cementing job in order to assure cement ports in the stage collar are not covered with hard cement forcing the termination of second stage job prematurely. Besides cementing design, careful selection of the stage collar location and casing annulus packer in the string is also of significant importance in leading to successful two stage cement job. Two development wells with above approached has been delivered and no sustained casing pressure has been experienced. This proactive approach to use two stage cementing as primary plan has proven to successfully eliminate the risk of SCP, which was a frequent struggle in their sister wells drilled with primary cementing in the past in the same field. The risk analysis combined with careful considerations of critical cementing design parameters and selection of stage tool location have become a novel approach to combat against SCP in this gas field.

Abstract This chapter begins with a review of some of the terms used in the gear industry to describe the design of gears and gear geometries. It then discusses the types of gears that operate on parallel shafts, intersecting shafts, and nonparallel and nonintersecting shafts. Next, the processes involved in the selection of gear are discussed, followed by information on the basic stresses applied to a gear tooth, the strength of a gear tooth, and the most widely used gear materials. Further, the chapter briefly reviews gear manufacturing methods and the heat treating processing steps including prehardening processes, through hardening, and case hardening processes.

Purpose To improve the transmission efficiency and reduce the damage to pipes in the hydraulic systems of tunnel boring machine subjected to random vibration, this paper aims to propose a novel dynamic characteristic analysis method that considers random vibration. Design/methodology/approach A fluid-structure interaction motion equation of the pipe is established by using Hamilton’s principle. The finite element method and discrete analysis method of random vibration are used to construct a model of the dynamic behavior of the pipe. Findings The influences of fluid parameters and external excitation parameters on the dynamic characteristics of pipes are analyzed. The experimental results are found to be in good agreement with the simulation results, which demonstrates that the proposed analytical method can provide a theoretical reference for the design and selection of hydraulic pipes subjected to random vibration. Originality/value The proposed method can be regarded as a future calculation method for pipes subjected to random vibration, and the transmission efficiency of the pipe can be improved.

Feasibility of a multi-purpose testing machine for research studies in gearing has been demonstrated with construction of a unique gear testing machine with a differential planetary gear drive. This machine was used in such interdependent studies as determination of instantaneous gear tooth engagement loads, minimum film thicknesses, and gear efficiencies. With minimal structural and mechanical modifications, this gear research machine can be used for studies of surface durability, thermal distribution in gear meshing zones, and effects of variable torques and torsional oscillations on performance of gearing. Most of these studies could be conducted simultaneously. Upon selection of appropriate gear ratios, this machine was operated either with one or two stationary gears. Presence of stationary gears simplified greatly the measurement techniques and increased the reliability of tests. This machine can accommodate spur, helical or any special type of gearing. Design and operational characteristics of this machine, as well as a short summary of research projects performed on this machine, are presented in this paper.

A practical solution to the problem of determining the configuration of a combined muffler for exhaust noise of a vehicle with maximum acoustic efficiency for a given volume is presented using an integral indicator of acoustic efficiency. Optimization of the geometric parameters of noise mufflers based on the integral indicator of acoustic efficiency makes it possible to reduce the time spent on the selection of the main spatial parameters and characteristics of the applied sound-absorbing materials before starting numerical calculations.

Abstract This paper presents a methodology for the identification of a most promising clutching sequence associated with an epicyclic-type automatic transmission mechanism. First, a methodology for the analysis of torque distribution on the links of an epicyclic gear mechanism is described. Then, the power loss relations associated with various clutching sequences of an epicyclic gear mechanism are derived. Finally, a procedure for the selection of a most efficient clutching sequence associated with a transmission mechanism is developed.

Background: Recent reviews on tooth modification of involute cylindrical gear are presented. Gear pairs are widely employed in motion and power transmission systems. Manufacturing and assembling errors of gear parts, time-varying mesh stiffness and transmission error of gear pair, usually induce vibration, noise, non-uniformly load distribution and stress concentration, resulting in earlier failure of gear. Tooth modification is regarded as one of the most popular ways to suppress vibration, reduce noise level, and improve load distribution of gear pairs. Objective: To provide an overview of recent research and patents on tooth modification method and technology. Methods: This article reviews related research and patents on tooth modification. The modification method, evaluation, optimization and machining technology are introduced. Results: Three types of modifications are compared and analyzed, and influences of each on both static and dynamic performances of gear pair are concluded. By summarizing a number of patents and research about tooth modification of cylindrical gears, the current and future development of research and patent are also discussed. Conclusion: Tooth modification is classified into tip or root relief along tooth profile, lead crown modification along tooth width and compound modification. Each could be applied in different ways. In view of design, optimization under given working condition to get optimal modification parameters is more practical. Machining technology and device for modified gear is a key to get high quality performance of geared transmission. More patents on tooth modification should be invented in future.
