Development of an Experimental Correlation for a Pressure Loss at a Side Orifice

An experimental study has been carried out to measure the pressure loss at the side orifice of a liquid metal reactor fuel assembly. The characteristics of the pressure loss at the side orifice are investigated using the experimental data measured from 17 different types of side orifices that have different geometric shapes, dimensions, and arrangements of nozzles, and a correlation that covers the whole flow range by one equation is developed. The error range of the correlation is within ±10%, and most of the errors occurred in a region where the Reynolds number is small. The range of Reynolds numbers based on the hydraulic diameter of the orifice is 2000–350,000. It is found that the geometric factor is the most important parameter for the pressure loss when the Reynolds number is >30,000. As the Reynolds number becomes smaller, its effect becomes larger, and when the Reynolds number is small, it is the most important parameter for the pressure loss at the side orifices. The measured data shows a trend that the pressure loss coefficient increases as the number of orifices increases, and the effect of the longitudinal arrangement is small.

In this study, an analysis of the performance of micro nozzle/diffusers is performed and fabrication of the micro nozzle/diffuser is conducted and tested. It is found that the pressure loss coefficient for the nozzle/diffuser decreases with the Reynolds number. At a given Reynolds number, the pressure loss coefficient for nozzle is higher than that of the diffuser due to considerable difference in the momentum change. For the effect of nozzle/diffuser length on the pressure loss coefficient, it is found that the influence is rather small. At a fixed volumetric flowrate, a “minimum” phenomenon of the pressure loss coefficient vs. nozzle/diffuser depth is encountered. This is related to the interactions of velocity change and friction factor. Good agreements of the measured data with the predicted results are found in this study except at a diffuser having an opening angle of 20° . It is likely that the departure of this case to the prediction is due to the separation phenomenon in a larger angle of the diffuser.

A systematic experimental study was carried out to determine how the heat transfer characteristics of a turbulent tube flow are affected by the length and diameter of a cylindrical plenum chamber which delivers fluid to the tube. The net pressure loss due to the presence of the plenum was also measured. The experimental arrangement was such that the fluid experiences a consecutive expansion and contraction in the plenum before entering the electrically heated test section. Air was the working fluid, and the Reynolds number was varied over the range from 5,000 to 60,000. It was found that at axial stations in the upstream portion of the tube, there are substantially higher heat transfer coefficients in the presence of longer plenums. Thus, a longer plenum functions as an enhancement device. On the other hand, the plenum diameter appears to have only a minor influence in the range investigated (i.e., plenum diameters equal to three and six times the tube diameter). The fully developed Nusselt numbers are independent of the plenum length and diameter. With longer plenums in place, the thermal entrance length showed increased sensitivity to Reynolds number in the fully turbulent regime. The pressure loss coefficient, which compares the plenum-related pressure loss with the velocity head in the tube, increases more or less linearly with the plenum length. With regard to experimental technique, it was demonstrated that guard heating/cooling of the electrical bus adjacent to the tube inlet is necessary for accurate heat transfer results at low Reynolds numbers but, although desirable, is less necessary at higher Reynolds numbers.

The pressure drop across 90deg sharp-angled miter elbows connecting straight circular pipes is studied in a bespoke experimental facility by using water and air as working fluids flowing in the range of bulk Reynolds number 500<Re<60,000. To the best of our knowledge, the dependence on the Reynolds number of the pressure drop across the miter elbow scaled by the dynamic pressure, i.e., the pressure-loss coefficient K, is reported herein for the first time. The coefficient is shown to decrease sharply with the Reynolds number up to about Re=20,000 and, at higher Reynolds numbers, to approach mildly a constant K=0.9, which is about 20% lower than the currently reported value in the literature. We quantify this relation and the dependence between K and the straight-pipe friction factor at the same Reynolds number through two new empirical correlations, which will be useful for the design of piping systems fitted with these sharp elbows. The pressure drop is also expressed in terms of the scaled equivalent length, i.e., the length of a straight pipe that would produce the same pressure drop as the elbow at the same Reynolds number.

AbstractThis study looks to find a suitable turbulence model for calculating pressure losses of ventilation components. In building ventilation, the most relevant Reynolds number range is between 3×104 and 6×105, depending on the duct dimensions and airflow rates. Pressure loss coefficients can increase considerably for some components at Reynolds numbers below 2×105. An initial survey of popular turbulence models was conducted for a selected test case of a bend with such a strong Reynolds number dependence. Most of the turbulence models failed in reproducing this dependence and predicted curve progressions that were too flat and only applicable for higher Reynolds numbers. Viscous effects near walls played an important role in the present simulations. In turbulence modelling, near-wall damping functions are used to account for this influence. A model that implements near-wall modelling is the lag elliptic blending k-ε model. This model gave reasonable predictions for pressure loss coefficients at lower Reynolds numbers. Another example is the low Reynolds number k-ε turbulence model of Wilcox (LRN). The modification uses damping functions and was initially developed for simulating profiles such as aircraft wings. It has not been widely used for internal flows such as air duct flows. Based on selected reference cases, the three closure coefficients of the LRN model were adapted in this work to simulate ventilation components. Improved predictions were obtained with new coefficients (LRNM model). This underlined that low Reynolds number effects are relevant in ventilation ductworks and give first insights for suitable turbulence models for this application. Both the lag elliptic blending model and the modified LRNM model predicted the pressure losses relatively well for the test case where the other tested models failed.

Local turbulent convective heat transfer from a flat plate to a circular impinging air jet is numerically investigated. The jet-to-plate distance (L/D) effect on local heat transfer is the main focus of this study. The eddy viscosity V2F turbulence model is used with a nonuniform structured mesh. Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS) and the energy equation are solved for axisymmetric, three-dimensional flow. The numerical solutions obtained are compared with published experimental data. Four jet-to-plate distances, (L/D = 2, 4, 6 and 10) and seven Reynolds numbers (Re = 7,000, 15,000, 23,000, 50,000, 70,000, 100,000 and 120,000) were parametrically studied. Local and average heat transfer results are analyzed and correlated with Reynolds number and the jet-to-plate distance. Results show that the numerical solutions matched experimental data best at low jet-to-plate distances and lower Reynolds numbers, decreasing in ability to accurately predict the heat transfer as jet-to-plate distance and Reynolds number was increased.

Abstract This body of work provides an initial study of modeling both surface roughness and heat transfer concurrently in a numerical simulation of micro-channels representative of those that might be found in a turbine cooling application. Increased use of additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D printing techniques for turbomachinery components enable the manufacture of complex features to achieve higher operational performance. Accurate modeling of flow losses and heat transfer effects are critical to designing parts which achieve optimal efficiency paired with durability. Surface finish is rougher with AM compared to more traditional manufacturing techniques; therefore enhancing the pressure loss and heat transfer effects. Proper implementation of surface roughness within the computational model and correct modeling of the near wall boundary mesh must be maintained to produce accurate results. This study focuses on the comparison of near wall mesh treatment coupled with surface roughness to determine a practice for obtaining accurate pressure loss and heat transfer within a cooling passage, as compared to measurements. Steady-state computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models consisting of a wind tunnel inlet nozzle and outlet diffuser, along with internal cooling passages represented using micro-channels, has been run for a range of Reynolds numbers and simulated roughness levels. Analysis of a baseline configuration with aerodynamically smooth walls is first compared to the measured data to verify the assumption of aerodynamically smooth walls. Surface roughness is then added to the channel walls, from published test coupon measurements, and compared to published experimental data for a range of Reynolds numbers. The metal surrounding the passages is also included as a conjugate heat transfer model providing heat addition to the fluid. Pressure loss and heat transfer is compared to the measured data as a friction factor and Nusselt number for the range of Reynolds numbers. Since surface roughness units and measurements vary, an effect of surface roughness values on pressure loss and heat transfer will also be investigated to determine the importance of using and converting to the correct units for the numerical model. This serves as a starting point for a guideline that will help when both heat transfer and surface roughness are included in a CFD model. Further study is recommended to understand the diminishing levels of increase in friction factor and Nusselt number observed as surface roughness was continually increased in the numerical simulation.

Abstract In this paper, we investigated the effects of herringbone riblets, a type of bio-inspired micro-scale surface patterns, on pressure losses and flow turning angles in a linear cascade over a range of low Reynolds numbers from 0.50 × 105 to 1.50 × 105 and at three different incidence angles. Our experiments showed that despite their micro-scale size, herringbone riblets produced a significant reduction in pressure loss and a substantial increase in flow turning angle except at the low end of the Reynolds numbers tested. In comparison to the baseline case without riblets, the highest reduction in the zone-averaged pressure loss coefficient behind one flow passage was 36.4% which was accompanied by a 4.1 deg increase in the averaged turning angle. The loss reduction was caused by a decrease in γmax at α = −1 deg, a narrower wake zone at α = 9 deg and a mixture of both at α = 4 deg due to the suppression of flow separation on the blade suction surface. It was also noted that such a significant improvement was always accompanied by the appearance of a serrated wake structure in the contours of pressure loss coefficient in which the region with a higher loss reduction occurring directly behind the divergent region of herringbone riblets. The observed improvement in cascade performance was attributed to the secondary flow motion produced by herringbone riblets which energizes the boundary layer. Overall, this work has produced convincing experimental evidence that herringbone riblets could be potentially used as passive flow control devices for reducing flow separation in compressors at low Reynolds numbers.

Exit surveys detailing total pressure loss, turning angle, and secondary velocities have been acquired for a fully loaded vane profile in a large scale low speed cascade facility. Exit surveys have been taken over a four-to-one range in Reynolds numbers based on exit conditions and for both a low turbulence condition and a high turbulence condition. The high turbulence condition was generated using a mock aero-derivative combustor. Exit loss, angle, and secondary velocity measurements were acquired in the facility using a five-hole cone probe at two stations representing axial chord spacings of 0.25 and 0.50. Substantial differences in the level of losses, distribution of losses, and secondary flow vectors are seen with the different turbulence conditions and at the different Reynolds numbers. The higher turbulence condition produces a significantly broader wake than the low turbulence case and shows a measurable total pressure loss in the region outside the wakes. Generally, total pressure losses are about 0.02 greater for the high turbulence case compared with the low turbulence case primarily due to the state of the suction surface boundary layers. Losses decrease moderately with increasing Reynolds number. Cascade inlet velocity distributions have been previously documented in an endwall heat transfer study of this same geometry. These exit survey measurements support our understanding of the endwall heat transfer distributions, the secondary flows in the passage, and the origin of losses.

An experimental study has been carried out to measure the pressure drop in a 271-pin fuel assembly of a liquid metal reactor. The rod pitch to rod diameter ratio (P/D) of the fuel assembly is 1.2 and the wire lead length to rod diameter ratio (H/D) is 24.84. Measurements are made for five different sections in a fuel assembly; inlet orifice, fuel assembly inlet, wire-wrapped fuel assembly, fuel assembly outlet and fuel assembly upper region. A series of water experiments have been conducted changing flow rate and water temperature. It is shown that the pressure drops in the inlet orifice and in the wire-wrapped fuel assembly are much larger than those in other regions. The measured pressure drop data in a wire-wrapped fuel assembly region is compared with the existing four correlations. It is shown that the correlation proposed by Cheng and Todreas fits the best with the present experimental data among the four correlations considered.

The new LP turbine test rig “ATRD” at the Institute of Aircraft Propulsion Systems (ILA) at Stuttgart University has been used to study the detailed effects of Reynolds number variation. The two-stage LP turbine has been developed in a cooperation of ILA and MTU Aero Engines GmbH. Changes in the turbine characteristics are discussed. Five hole probe area traverse data has been acquired at exit from each row of aerofoils across a broad range of Reynolds numbers, over 88,000 down to 35,000. The experimental data is supported by multi-row steady CFD predictions. The behaviour of wakes, loss cores and secondary deviations is identified across the Reynolds number range. The present study is focusing on the effects of Reynolds number variation on the vane of the second stage.
