Granular Damping in Forced Vibration: Qualitative and Quantitative Analyses

Granular damping is a passive vibration suppression technique which attenuates the response of a vibrating structure by the use of a granule-filled enclosure attached to or embedded in the structure. While promising in many applications especially under harsh conditions, the granular damping mechanism is very complicated and highly nonlinear. In this paper, we perform correlated analytical modeling and numerical studies to evaluate qualitatively and quantitatively the energy dissipation in granular damping. First, an improved analytical model based on the multiphase flow theory is developed for the description of granular motion inside the damper, which accounts for the complete effects of collisions/impacts and dynamic frictions among the granules and between the granules and the enclosure. This model can efficiently characterize the damping effect with high fidelity over a very wide range of parameters, and thus can be used to develop guidelines for parametric studies. With this as a basis, detailed numerical studies using the discrete element method are also carried out to analyze the underlying mechanisms and then provide mechanistic insight for granular damping. In this paper, we focus our attention on the granular damping effect on forced vibrations, which has potential application to a variety of systems.

Particle damping has the promising potential for attenuating the unwanted vibrations in harsh environment. However, the damping performance of the conventional particle damper (PD) may be ineffective, especially when the acceleration of the particle damper is less than gravitational acceleration (1g). In order to improve the damping performance of the traditional PD, the tuned mass particle damper (TMPD) which utilizes the advantages of both the tuned mass damper and particle damper is investigated in this paper. The TMPD can act as the tuned mass damper to not only absorb the vibration of the primary structure but also amplify the motions of the particles in the enclosure, which will significantly enhance the particle damping effect. To analyze the damping effect of the TMPD, a new coupling method to integrate the TMPD into the continuous host structure is first developed. The 3D discrete element method is then adopted to accurately describe and analyze the motion of particles in the enclosure. Furthermore, the analysis is validated by correlating the numerical and experimental results. With the new method as basis, detailed numerical studies are further carried out to verify the damping effectiveness of the TMPD compared with conventional PD under various excitation levels. The results demonstrate that the TMPD can significantly improve the damping effect of the conventional PD on suppressing the vibration of the primary structure under both the low and high excitation levels.

Wind-induced vibration of power lines has been a major challenge for design engineers for decades. Hitherto, there is no effective devices that can suppress these vibrations throughout a wide range of resonant frequencies. This paper presents a promising vibration suppression technique using an energy harvester moving vibration absorber (EHMVA), which can simultaneously harvest energy and suppress the vibrations. The vibration-based energy harvesting can be achieved using an electromagnetic transducer, which replaces the viscous damping element of conventional absorbers. This harvested energy can then be utilized to power small sensors and electronic devices required for EHMVA to adapt to wind characteristics and move to an optimum location, thus leading to potentially superior vibration control. The coupled dynamics between a single conductor and EHMVA is presented and numerical examples are carried out to investigate the performance of the proposed absorber. The findings are very promising and open a horizon of future opportunities to optimize the design of EHMVAs for superior performance.

AbstractInteractions between light and matter during short-pulse laser materials processing are highly nonlinear, and hence acutely sensitive to laser parameters such as the pulse energy, repetition rate, and number of pulses used. Due to this complexity, simulation approaches based on calculation of the underlying physical principles can often only provide a qualitative understanding of the inter-relationships between these parameters. An alternative approach such as parameter optimisation, often requires a systematic and hence time-consuming experimental exploration over the available parameter space. Here, we apply neural networks for parameter optimisation and for predictive visualisation of expected outcomes in laser surface texturing with blind vias for tribology control applications. Critically, this method greatly reduces the amount of experimental laser machining data that is needed and associated development time, without negatively impacting accuracy or performance. The techniques presented here could be applied in a wide range of fields and have the potential to significantly reduce the time, and the costs associated with laser process optimisation.

Formulating the dynamics equations of a mechanical system following a multibody dynamics approach often leads to a set of highly nonlinear differential-algebraic equations (DAEs). While this form of the equations of motion is suitable for a wide range of practical applications, in some cases it is necessary to have access to the linearized system dynamics. This is the case when stability and modal analyses are to be carried out; the definition of plant and system models for certain control algorithms and state estimators also requires a linear expression of the dynamics. A number of methods for the linearization of multibody dynamics can be found in the literature. They differ in both the approach that they follow to handle the equations of motion and the way in which they deliver their results, which in turn are determined by the selection of the generalized coordinates used to describe the mechanical system. This selection is closely related to the way in which the kinematic constraints of the system are treated. Three major approaches can be distinguished and used to categorize most of the linearization methods published so far. In this work, we demonstrate the properties of each approach in the linearization of systems in static equilibrium, illustrating them with the study of two representative examples.

Using theoretical parametric studies covering a wide range of cable (and wire) diameters and lay angles, the range of validity of various approaches used for analysing helical cables are critically examined. Numerical results strongly suggest that for multi-layered steel strands with small wire/cable diameter ratios, the bending and torsional stiffnesses of the individual wires may safely be ignored when calculating the 2 × 2 matrix for strand axial/torsional stiffnesses. However, such bending and torsional wire stiffnesses are shown to be first order parameters in analysing the overall axial and torsional stiffnesses of, say, seven wire stands, especially under free-fixed end conditions with respect to torsional movements. Interwire contact deformations are shown to be of great importance in evaluating the axial and torsional stiffnesses of large diameter multi-layered steel strands. Their importance diminishes as the number of wires associated with smaller diameter cables decreases. Using a modified version of a previously reported theoretical model for analysing multilayered instrumentation cables, the importance of allowing for the influence of contact deformations in compliant layers on cable overall characteristics such as axial or torsional stiffnesses is demonstrated by theoretical numerical results. In particular, non-Hertzian contact formulations are used to obtain the interlayer compliances in instrumentation cables in preference to a previously reported model employing Hertzian theory with its associated limitations.

Abstract This paper reports a structural modification of an auxetic metamaterial with a combination of representative re-entrant and chiral topologies, namely, a re-entrant chiral auxetic (RCA). The main driving force for the structural modification was to overcome the undesirable properties of the RCA metamaterial such as anisotropic mechanical response under uniaxial compression. Additively manufactured polyamide 12 specimens via Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) were quasi-statically compressed along the two in-plane directions. The experimental results confirmed that the modified structure was less sensitive to the loading direction and the deformation was more uniform. Moreover, similar energy absorptions were obtained when the modified metamaterial was crushed along the two in-plane directions. The energy absorptions were improved from 390 to 950 kJ/m³ and from 500 to 1000 kJ/m³ compared with the RCA when they were crushed along the X and Y directions, respectively. The absorbed energy per unit mass (SEA) also improved from 1.4 to 2.9 J/g and from 1.78 to 3.1 J/g compared with that of the RCA under the axial compression along the X and Y directions. Furthermore, parametric studies were performed and the effects of geometric parameters of the modified metamaterial were numerically investigated. Tuneable auxetic feature was obtained. The energy absorption and Poisson’s ratio of the modified metamaterial offer it a good alternative for a wide range of potential applications in the areas such as aerospace, automotive, and human protective equipment.

Abstract Vibration suppression of distributed parameter systems is of great interest and has a wide range of applications. The dynamic performance of a primary system can be improved by adding dynamic vibration absorbers (DVA). Although the relevant topics have been studied for decades, the trade-off between capability of suppressing multiple resonant peaks and complexity of absorbers has not been well addressed. In this paper, the vibration suppression problem of a uniform Euler-Bernoulli beam with closely spaced natural frequencies is investigated. To achieve desired vibration reduction, a two-DOF DVA is connected to the beam through a pair of a spring and a dashpot. By introducing a virtual ground spring, the parameters of the absorber are determined via extended fixed point theory. The proposed method only requires univariate optimization and is computationally efficient. Numerical examples conducted verify the viability of the proposed method and the effectiveness of a two-DOF DVA in suppressing double resonances.

This paper considers a passive target localization problem in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) using the noisy time of arrival (TOA) measurements, obtained from multiple receivers and a single transmitter. The objective function is formulated as a maximum likelihood (ML) estimation problem under the Gaussian noise assumption. Consequently, the objective function of the ML estimator is a highly nonlinear and nonconvex function, where conventional optimization methods are not suitable for this type of problem. Hence, an improved algorithm based on the hybridization of an adaptive differential evolution (ADE) and Nelder-Mead (NM) algorithms, named HADENM, is proposed to find the estimated position of a passive target. In this paper, the control parameters of the ADE algorithm are adaptively updated during the evolution process. In addition, an adaptive adjustment parameter is designed to provide a balance between the global exploration and the local exploitation abilities. Furthermore, the exploitation is strengthened using the NM method by improving the accuracy of the best solution obtained from the ADE algorithm. Statistical analysis has been conducted, to evaluate the benefits of the proposed modifications on the optimization performance of the HADENM algorithm. The comparison results between HADENM algorithm and its versions indicate that the modifications proposed in this paper can improve the overall optimization performance. Furthermore, the simulation shows that the proposed HADENM algorithm can attain the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) and outperforms the constrained weighted least squares (CWLS) and differential evolution (DE) algorithms. The obtained results demonstrate the high accuracy and robustness of the proposed algorithm for solving the passive target localization problem for a wide range of measurement noise levels.

To Darwin, parasites were fascinating examples of adaptation but their significance as selective factors for a wide range of phenomena has only been studied in depth over the last few decades. This work has had its roots in behavioural/evolutionary ecology on the one hand, and in population biology/ecology on the other, thus shaping a new comprehensive field of ‘evolutionary parasitology’. Taking parasites into account has been a success story and has shed new light on several old questions such as sexual selection, the evolution of sex and recombination, changes in behaviour, adaptive life histories, and so forth. In the process, the topic of ecological immunology has emerged, which analyses immune defences in a framework of costs and benefits. Throughout, a recurrent theme is how to appropriately integrate the underlying mechanisms as evolved boundary conditions into a framework of studying the adaptive value of traits. On the conceptual side, major questions remain and await further study.
