An experimental study of the influence of oil supply temperature and supply pressure on the performance of a 100mm plain journal bearing with two axial grooves located at ±90deg to the load line was carried out. The hydrodynamic pressure at the mid-plane of the bearing, temperature profiles at the oil-bush and oil-shaft interfaces, bush torque, oil flow rate, and the position of the shaft were measured for variable operating conditions. Shaft rotational speed ranged from 1000 to 4000rpm and two different values of applied load were tested (2 and 10kN). The supply temperature ranged from 35 to 50°C, whereas the oil supply pressure range was 70 to 210kPa. Bearing performance is strongly dependent on the supply conditions. It was found that the existence of the downstream groove significantly affects the temperature profile at the oil-bush interface except for the low load, low feeding pressure cases, where the cooling effect of the upstream groove is significant. Feeding temperature has a strong effect on the minimum film thickness. The increase in maximum temperature is significantly lower than the corresponding increase in supply temperature. Increases in supply pressure lead to a significant rise in oil flow rate but have little effect on the maximum temperature and power-loss, except in the case of the lightly loaded bearing. Shaft temperature was found to be close to the bearing maximum temperature for low applied loads, being significantly smaller than this value for high loads. The mean shaft temperature is only significantly higher than the outlet temperature at high shaft speeds.

This paper aims to present the results of parametric experiments carried out in order to study the influence of groove location and supply pressure on the performance of a steadily loaded journal bearing with a single-axial groove. Hydrodynamic pressure and temperature distributions on the bush surface, shaft temperature, flow rate and bush torque were measured at variable supply pressure, using bushes with a single groove located at three different positions. A series of tests were carried out for variable applied load and rotational speed. The experimental evidence shows that some bearing characteristics are significantly sensitive to changes in groove location and supply pressure. One groove located at 30 degrees in relation to the load line, in the direction of shaft rotation, can conduct to reductions in maximum temperature, maximum hydrodynamic pressure and bush torque, with a moderate increase in oil flow rate. An analysis was made of the oil flows occurring in a full journal bearing with a continuous oil film. The flow rate into the bearing was determined at the section of greatest clearance and the rate of outflow was determined at the section of least clearance. The rate of side flow or leakage rate was determined by considering the flow across the boundary of the positive pressure area only and is the flow resulting from the hydrodynamic pressure gradients. It does not include the effects of any specific oil feed mechanism.

The present study deals with the experimental determination of the performance of a 100 mm diameter plain journal bearing submitted to a misalignment torque. Hydrodynamic pressure and temperature fields in the mid-plane of the bearing, temperatures in two axial directions, oil flow rate, and minimum film thickness, were all measured for various operating conditions and misalignment torques. Tests were carried out for rotational speeds ranging from 1500 to 4000 rpm with a maximum static load of 9000 N and a misalignment torque varying from 0 to 70 N.m. The bearing performances were greatly affected by the misalignment. The maximum pressure in the mid-plane decreased by 20 percent for the largest misalignment torque while the minimum film thickness was reduced by 80 percent. The misalignment caused more significant changes in bearing performance when the rotational speed or load was low. The hydrodynamic effects were then relatively small and the bearing offered less resistance to the misalignment.

Oil feed rate is an important parameter governing the operating characteristics of a journal bearing. In the present paper investigation is carried out to explore the effect of oil groove location and supply pressure on the oil feed rate to the bearing. These results are further used to get variation in Sommerfeld number and attitude angle for different oil groove locations and supply pressures. The results indicate that oil groove location has a great influence on oil feed rate to the bearing. It is also observed that oil supply arrangement does not have a significant influence on Sommerfeld number and attitude angle.

Purpose Large scale is a trend of the ball mill, so the loads on their bearings become very large, bearing operating conditions turn into more severe. The moment of inertia to their pivot of the pad increase significantly, so it leads to the difficult of the pad attitude adjustment and makes the pad tilting angles time response slow, the key factor to effects attitude adjustment is the oil film moment to the pad pivot at unbalance position. the oil film moment and its effect factors must be studied in the design of the bearing used in ball mill. Design/methodology/approach Models about the lubrication of multi-pocket pivoted pad hydrostatic bearing is established, the complicated relationship of the oil flow rate between the oil pockets are taken into account. Finite differential method is used to solv the model, and theroy of finite element method is use to calculate the oil flow rate out of the pocket edges. Newton’s methods are used to determine the pressure of pockets.The pad tilting moment to its pivot is numerically analyzed. Findings The tilting moment to its pivot is set as an indicator of the ability for a pad to adjust its attitude. The effects of the diameter of throttling capillary and the pocket area on the attitude adjusting capacity is studied. Relations between the attitude adjustment capacity for a pad and there effects factors are presented. Practical implications The methods and results have the special reference to the design and operation of multiple pockets tilted pad hydrostatic journal bearing. Originality/value Methods to studied the pad attitude adjustment are given in the article for the multi-pocket pivot pad hydrostatic beairng.The influence factors on pad attitude adjusting capacity are discussed for a this specail kind hydrostatic bearing, the how the factors influence the pad tilting angle adjustment are presented.

In this work a thermohydrodynamic analysis has been developed in order to investigate the influence of oil supply conditions on the performance of a journal bearing. The supply conditions considered were oil supply temperature, supply pressure, groove length and groove location. To carry out this study, the hydrodynamic pressure distribution inside the bearing has been determined using a mass-conserving cavitation model with realistic supply conditions. The energy equation and the heat conduction equation have been used for the determination of oil film and bush temperature distributions. The agreement observed between theoretical predictions and experimental published data is acceptable. Quantitative information shows that the oil supply conditions affect bearing performance parameters in different ways. Oil flowrate was markedly affected by all supply parameters studied. Power loss, maximum bush temperature and minimum film thickness were mainly dependent on oil supply temperature. The effect of supply pressure on minimum film thickness was dependent on groove location. An axial groove located at 90° to the load line gave rise to more favourable bearing performance characteristics.

This numerical study deals with the improvement of the thermohydrodynamic performance of a 100 mm plain journal bearing submitted to a constant misalignment torque under steady-state conditions. The performance of the misaligned journal bearing is improved by adding either a local or a global defect to the bearing geometry. The influence on bearing performance of the local defect, situated in the zone of minimum film thickness, is analyzed by using various widths and lengths of defect. A global defect, which is conical in shape and is located at one end of the bearing, is also studied under varying direction and magnitude of misalignment torque. Our main focus was on hydrodynamic pressure, temperature distributions at the film/bush interface, oil flow rate, power losses and film thickness. The defects significantly improved the performance of the bearing. The minimum film thickness increased by more than 60 percent and the temperature decreased, whilst the axial flow rate was barely affected. Thus, the defects can be an effective solution for misaligned bearings when they are submitted to extreme operating conditions.

Many high-speed, rotating machines across a wide range of industrial applications depend on fluid film bearings to provide both static support of the rotor and to introduce stabilizing damping forces into the system through a developed hydrodynamic film wedge. Reduced oil supply flow rate to the bearings can cause cavitation, or a lack of a fully developed film layer, at the leading edge of the bearing pads. Reducing oil flow has the well-documented effects of higher bearing operating temperatures and decreased power losses due to shear forces. While machine efficiency may be improved with reduced lubricant flow, little experimental data on its effects on system stability and performance can be found in the literature. This study looks at overall system performance of a test rig operating under reduced oil supply flow rates by observing steady-state bearing performance indicators and baseline vibrational response of the shaft. The test rig used in this study was designed to be dynamically similar to a high-speed industrial compressor. It consists of a 1.55 m long, flexible rotor supported by two tilting pad bearings with a nominal diameter of 70 mm and a span of 1.2 m. The first bending mode is located at approximately 5,000 rpm. The tiling-pad bearings consist of five pads in a vintage, flooded bearing housing with a length to diameter ratio of 0.75, preload of 0.3, and a load-between-pad configuration. Tests were conducted over a number of operating speeds, ranging from 8,000 to 12,000 rpm, and bearing loads, while systematically reducing the oil supply flow rates provided to the bearings under each condition. For nearly all operating conditions, a low amplitude, broadband subsynchronous vibration pattern was observed in the frequency domain from approximately 0–75 Hz. When the test rig was operated at running speeds above its first bending mode, a distinctive subsynchronous peak emerged from the broadband pattern at approximately half of the running speed and at the first bending mode of the shaft. This vibration signature is often considered a classic sign of rotordynamic instability attributed to oil whip and shaft whirl phenomena. For low and moderate load conditions, the amplitude of this 0.5x subsynchronous peak increased with decreasing oil supply flow rate at all operating speeds. Under the high load condition, the subsynchronous peak was largely attenuated. A discussion on the possible sources of this subsynchronous vibration including self-excited instability and pad flutter forced vibration is provided with supporting evidence from thermoelastohydrodynamic (TEHD) bearing modeling results. Implications of reduced oil supply flow rate on system stability and operational limits are also discussed.

The effects of oil supply pressure on the temperature and pressure at different groove locations on a hydrodynamic journal bearing were investigated. A journal with a diameter of 100 mm and a ½ length-to-diameter ratio was used. The supply pressure was set to 0.2, 0.5, and 0.7 MPa at seven different groove locations, namely, -45°, -30°, -15°, 0°, +15°, +30°, and +45°. Temperature and pressure profiles were measured at speed values of 300, 500, and 800 rpm with 10 kN radial load. The results show that the change in oil supply pressure simultaneously reduced the temperature and increased the pressure profile.
