Tumbling Flow in Loop-Scavenged Two-Stroke Engines

A multidimensional calculation procedure is used to investigate the flow in loop-scavenged two-stroke engine with curved cylinder heads. Five different cylinder heads are considered. The curvature of cylinder head increases from case I to case IV. In case V the head curvature is further increased, but it is shaped in the radially outer region. Calculations reveal that a tumbling vortex forms after the exhaust port is closed and the vortex constantly dominates the flow structure in the cylinder throughout the compression period. With high head curvatures the vortex is well organized and occupies the entire cylinder volume in the late compression stage. Due to compression of the better organized tumbling vortex by the moving piston more energy cascades from mean flow to turbulence in the high curvature cases III and IV. As for case V, the larger clearance in the bowl center region leads to lower shear stresses and, thus, the turbulence augmentation phenomenon is less prominent than that for cases III and IV.

The primary velocity field and pattern of secondary flow are described for nine consecutive bends of the Squamish River in southwest British Columbia.The velocity field largely can be explained in terms of variation in channel form, advective acceleration responses, and water transfers by secondary flow.The pattern of secondary flow accords with the general model of spiral flow in meanders. Divergences from this ideal pattern can be explained by bend–flow interaction induced by the variable planform geometry of the channel.The strength of secondary circulation increases rapidly as the ratio of the radius of bend curvature to channel width (rm/w) declines from 4.0 to the data minimum of 1.41. There is no discontinuity phenomenon in the flow structure over the measured range of rm/w; the Bagnold separation–collapse model does not apply to the Squamish River.As rm/w declines to values less than 3.0, the maximum velocity filament shifts from the concave to the convex bank zone. The resulting high shear stresses over the point bar and declining shear stresses at the concave bank markedly reduce the channel migration rate.Separation zones developed at the concave bank of tightly curved bends provide the mechanism for completely halting (and indeed reversing) the process of channel migration.

The paper deals with an investigation of the fluctuations of pressure, due to piston motion on the exhaust stroke, which occur in the exhaust pipe of a single-cylinder four-stroke engine. Indicator diagrams of exhaust-port and of cylinder pressure, and measurements of air consumption were recorded, using exhaust pipes of three different diameters at three standard engine speeds; the exhaust pipe length was varied over a wide range in each case. In the light of the data thus obtained, the effects on air consumption of progressive alterations in valve timing were studied under known conditions of exhaust port pressure. Further trials were then carried out in which the valve timing which gave the maximum air consumption was determined for the full range of conditions of speed and exhaust pipe dimensions. The experimental results are discussed, and a method is derived by which the pressures in the exhaust port throughout the cycle may be obtained from theoretical considerations; the method is also directly applicable to induction pipe conditions.

A high-head three-bladed inducer has been equipped with pressure taps on the hub along the blade channels with the aim of more closely investigating the dynamics of cavitation-induced instabilities developing in the impeller flow. Spectral analysis of the pressure signals obtained from two sets of transducers mounted both in the stationary and rotating frames has allowed to characterize the nature, intensity, and interactions of the main flow instabilities detected in the experiments: subsynchronous rotating cavitation (RC), cavitation surge (CS), and a high-order axial surge oscillation. A dynamic model of the unsteady flow in the blade channels has been developed based on experimental data and on suitable descriptions of the mean flow and the oscillations of the cavitating volume. The model has been used for estimating at the inducer operating conditions of interest the intensity of the flow oscillations associated with the occurrence of the CS mode generated by RC in the inducer inlet.

To imitate resonances that might occur in the fuel delivery system of gas turbine combustors, the incoming liquid streams of two pressure swirl nozzles were perturbed using a piezoelectric driver. Frequencies of perturbations examined were from 3 to 20 kHz, and water was used as the test fluid. A video camera and a Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA) were used to study the effect of perturbations on the mean flow quantities of the sprays. Various lighting arrangements were used for the video photography: back lighting, front lighting, a strobe synchronized with the input to the piezoelectric, and a laser sheet oriented along the midplane of the sprays. The study showed that the piezoelectric drive had an effect an the spray system at discrete frequencies. At these particular frequencies, by increasing the input voltage, it was found that the piezoelectric drive affected the atomization in the following ways: (1) the mean flow rate decreased, (2) the spray cone angle decreased, (3) the break up length decreased, (4) the peak of the spatial distribution of the mean droplet size decreased, and (5) the mean droplet sizes and velocities increased near the spray center line and decreased in the outer region of the spray. A hysteresis effect of the drive frequency on the spray cone angle was observed. The results indicated that more fundamental research is needed to gain an in-depth understanding of the physical processes induced in the spray by the piezoelectric drive.

This paper focuses on the turbulence structure in a non-uniform, gradually varied, sub-critical open channel flow (OCF) on a rough bed. The flow field is analysed under accelerating, near-uniform and decelerating conditions. Information for the flow and turbulence parameters was obtained at multiple sections and planes using two different techniques: two-component laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) and particle image velocimetry (PIV). Different outer region velocity scaling methods were explored for evaluation of the local friction velocity. Analysis of the mean velocity profiles showed that the overlap layer exists for all flow cases. The outer layer of the decelerated velocity profile was strongly affected by the pressure gradient, where a large wake was noted. Due to the prevailing nature of the experimental setup it was found that the time-averaged flow quantities do not attained equilibrium conditions and the flow is spatially heterogeneous. The roughness generally increases the friction velocity and its effect was stronger than the effect of the pressure gradient. It was found that for the decelerated flow section over a rough bed, the mean flow and turbulence intensities were affected throughout the flow depth. The flow features presented in this study can be used to develop a model for simulating flow over a block ramp. The effect of the non-uniformity and roughness on turbulence intensities and Reynolds shear stresses was further investigated.

Direct numerical simulation of the Navier–Stokes equations is carried out to investigate the interaction of a conical shock wave with a turbulent boundary layer developing over a flat plate at free-stream Mach number $M_{\infty }=2.05$ and Reynolds number $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}}\approx 630$, based on the upstream boundary layer momentum thickness. The shock is generated by a circular cone with half opening angle $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}_{c}=25^{\circ }$. As found in experiments, the wall pressure exhibits a distinctive N-wave signature, with a sharp peak right past the precursor shock generated at the cone apex, followed by an extended zone with favourable pressure gradient, and terminated by the trailing shock associated with recompression in the wake of the cone. The boundary layer behaviour is strongly affected by the imposed pressure gradient. Streaks are suppressed in adverse pressure gradient (APG) zones, but re-form rapidly in downstream favourable pressure gradient (FPG) zones. Three-dimensional mean flow separation is only observed in the first APG region associated with the formation of a horseshoe vortex, whereas the second APG region features an incipient detachment state, with scattered spots of instantaneous reversed flow. As found in canonical geometrically two-dimensional wedge-generated shock–boundary layer interactions, different amplification of the turbulent stress components is observed through the interacting shock system, with approach to an isotropic state in APG regions, and to a two-component anisotropic state in FPG. The general adequacy of the Boussinesq hypothesis is found to predict the spatial organization of the turbulent shear stresses, although different eddy viscosities should be used for each component, as in tensor eddy-viscosity models, or in full Reynolds stress closures.

A direct numerical simulation study of self-similar compressible flat-plate turbulent boundary layers (TBLs) with pressure gradients (PGs) has been performed for inflow Mach numbers of 0.5 and 2.0. All cases are computed with smooth PGs for both favourable and adverse PG distributions (FPG, APG) and thus are akin to experiments using a reflected-wave set-up. The equilibrium character allows for a systematic comparison between sub- and supersonic cases, enabling the isolation of pure PG effects from Mach-number effects and thus an investigation of the validity of common compressibility transformations for compressible PG TBLs. It turned out that the kinematic Rotta–Clauser parameter $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{K}$ calculated using the incompressible form of the boundary-layer displacement thickness as length scale is the appropriate similarity parameter to compare both sub- and supersonic cases. Whereas the subsonic APG cases show trends known from incompressible flow, the interpretation of the supersonic PG cases is intricate. Both sub- and supersonic regions exist in the boundary layer, which counteract in their spatial evolution. The boundary-layer thickness $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{99}$ and the skin-friction coefficient $c_{f}$, for instance, are therefore in a comparable range for all compressible APG cases. The evaluation of local non-dimensionalized total and turbulent shear stresses shows an almost identical behaviour for both sub- and supersonic cases characterized by similar $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{K}$, which indicates the (approximate) validity of Morkovin’s scaling/hypothesis also for compressible PG TBLs. Likewise, the local non-dimensionalized distributions of the mean-flow pressure and the pressure fluctuations are virtually invariant to the local Mach number for same $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{K}$-cases. In the inner layer, the van Driest transformation collapses compressible mean-flow data of the streamwise velocity component well into their nearly incompressible counterparts with the same $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{K}$. However, noticeable differences can be observed in the wake region of the velocity profiles, depending on the strength of the PG. For both sub- and supersonic cases the recovery factor was found to be significantly decreased by APGs and increased by FPGs, but also to remain virtually constant in regions of approximated equilibrium.

The turbulent character of the supersonic wake of a linear cascade of fan airfoils has been studied using a two-component laser-doppler anemometer. The cascade was tested in the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University intermittent wind tunnel facility, where the Mach and Reynolds numbers were 2.36 and 4.8 × 106, respectively. In addition to mean flow measurements, Reynolds normal and shear stresses were measured as functions of cascade incidence angle and streamwise locations spanning the near-wake and the far-wake. The extremities of profiles of both the mean and turbulent wake properties´ were found to be strongly influenced by upstream shock-boundary -layer interactions, the strength of which varied with cascade incidence. In contrast, the peak levels of turbulence properties within the shear layer were found to be largely independent of incidence, and could be characterized in terms of the streamwise position only. The velocity defect turbulence level was found to be 23 percent, and the generally accepted value of the turbulence structural coefficient of 0.30 was found to be valid for this flow. The degree of similarity of the mean flow wake profiles was established, and those profiles demonstrating the most similarity were found to approach a state of equilibrium between the mean and turbulent properties. In general, this wake flow may be described as a classical free shear flow, upon which the influence of upstream shock-boundary-layer interactions has been superimposed.

The incompressible turbulent flow over a backward-facing step in a rectangular duct was investigated experimentally. The side wall effects on the core flow were determined by varying the aspect ratio (defined as the step span-to-height ratio) from 1 to 28. The Reynolds number, based on the step height and the oncoming free-stream velocity, was 26,500. Detailed velocity measurements were made, including the turbulent stresses, in a region which extended past the flow reattachment zone. Wall static pressure was also measured on both the step and flat walls. In addition, surface visualizations were obtained on all four walls surrounding the separated flow to supplement near-wall velocity measurements. The results show that the aspect ratio has an influence on both the velocity and wall pressure even for relatively large aspect ratios. For example, in the redevelopment region downstream of reattachment, the recovery pressure decreases with smaller aspect ratios. The three-dimensional side wall effects tend to slow down the relaxation downstream of reattachment for smaller aspect ratios as evidenced by the evolution of the velocity field. For the two smallest aspect ratios investigated, higher centerplane streamwise and transverse velocities were obtained which indicate a three-dimensional mean flow structure along the full span of the duct.

A theoretical model is developed for the sound generated when a convected disturbance encounters a cambered airfoil at non-zero angle of attack. The model is a generalization of a previous theory for a flat-plate airfoil, and is based on a linearization of the Euler equations about the steady, subsonic flow past the airfoil. High-frequency gusts, whose wavelengths are short compared to the airfoil chord, are considered. The airfoil camber and incidence angle are restricted so that the mean flow past the airfoil is a small perturbation to a uniform flow. The singular perturbation analysis retains the asymptotic regions present in the case of a flat-plate airfoil: local regions, which scale on the gust wavelength, at the airfoil leading and trailing edges; a ‘transition’ region behind the airfoil which is similar to the transition zone between illuminated and shadow regions in optical problems; and an outer region, far away from the airfoil edges and wake, in which the solution has a geometric-acoustics form. For the cambered airfoil, an additional asymptotic region in the form of an acoustic boundary layer adjacent to the airfoil surface is required in order to account for surface curvature effects. Parametric calculations are presented which illustrate that, like incidence angle, moderate amounts of airfoil camber can significantly affect the sound field produced by airfoil–gust interactions. Most importantly, the amount of radiated sound power is found to correlate very well with a single aerodynamic loading parameter, αeff, which is an effective mean-flow incidence angle for the airfoil leading edge.
