An extension of the dynamic synthesis philosophy given earlier [1] for cam follower systems is made in terms of a two-degree-of-freedom model. Three additional dimensionless parameters η, λ, γ for the distribution of mass, spring, and dashpot content are sufficient to describe this more complex system relative to the single degree-of-freedom coefficients. Charts in terms of η, λ, γ are presented to assist in choosing the best set of these values. Finally, “rules of thumb” are given which are applicable to a wide range of mechanical systems.

This paper explores a two degree-of-freedom nonlinearly coupled system with two distinct potential wells. The system consists of a pair of linear mass-spring-dampers with a non-linear, mechanical coupling between them. This nonlinearity creates fractal boundaries for basins of attraction and forced well-escape response. The inherent uncertainty of these fractal boundaries is quantified for errors in the initial conditions and parameter space. This uncertainty relationship provides a measure of the final state and transient sensitivity of the system.

Two degree of freedom (2 DOF) mass spring damper system is used in representing as building structure that dealing with the earthquake vibration. The real analytical input is used to the system that taken at El Centro earthquake that occurred in May 1940 with magnitude of 7.1 Mw. Two types of controller are presented in controlling the vibration which are fuzzy logic (FL) and sliding mode controller (SMC). The paper was aimed to improve the performance of building structure towards vibration based on proposed controllers. Fuzzy logic and sliding mode controller are widely known with robustness character. The mathematical model of two degree of freedom mass spring damper wasis derived to obtain the relationship between mass, spring, damper, force and actuator. Fuzzy logic and sliding mode controllers were implemented to 2 DOF system to suppress the earthquake vibration of two storeys building. Matlab/Simulink was used in designing the system and controllers to present the result of two storeys displacement time response and input control voltage for uncontrolled and controlled system. Then the data of earthquake disturbance was taken based on real seismic occurred at El Centro to make it as the force disturbance input to the building structure system. The controllers proposed would minimize the vibration that used in sample earthquake disturbance data. The simulation result was carried out by using Matlab/Simulink. The simulation result showed sliding mode controller was better controller than fuzzy logic. In specific, by using the controller, earthquake vibration can be reduced.

The measurement and correct modelling of damping is of crucial importance in the prediction of the dynamical performance of systems for a wide range of engineering applications. In most cases, however, the experimental methods used to measure damping coefficients are extremely basic and, in general, poorly reported. This paper shows that damping is a deceptive parameter which is prone to subtle nonlinear distortion which often appears to satisfy general linear criteria. An efficient experimental method which provides for the measurement of both the linear and nonlinear damping for a single-degree-of-freedom system is proposed. The results from a numerical simulation study of a model with “drag” type quadratic damping are shown to give reliable estimates of parameters of the system when both random and impulse excitation techniques are used.

Abstract The natural modes of free vibrations of a symmetrical two-degree-of-freedom system are analyzed theoretically and experimentally. This system has two natural modes, one in-phase and the other out-of-phase. In contradistinction to the comparable single-degree-of-freedom system where the free vibrations are always orbitally stable, the natural modes of the symmetrical two-degree-of-freedom system are frequently unstable. The stability properties depend on two parameters and are easily deduced from a stability chart. For sufficiently small amplitudes both modes are, in general, stable. When the coupling spring is linear, both modes are always stable at all amplitudes. For other conditions, either mode may become unstable at certain amplitudes. In particular, if there is a single value of frequency and amplitude at which the system can vibrate in either mode, the out-of-phase mode experiences a change of stability. The experimental investigation has generally confirmed the theoretical predictions.

With the continual increasing application requirements of broadband vibration energy harvesters (VEHs), many attempts have been made to broaden the bandwidth. As compared to adopted only a single approach, integration of multi-approaches can further widen the operating bandwidth. Here, a novel two-degree-of-freedom cantilever-based vibration triboelectric nanogenerator is proposed to obtain high operating bandwidth by integrating multimodal harvesting technique and inherent nonlinearity broadening behavior due to vibration contact between triboelectric surfaces. A wide operating bandwidth of 32.9 Hz is observed even at a low acceleration of 0.6 g. Meanwhile, the peak output voltage is 18.8 V at the primary resonant frequency of 23 Hz and 1 g, while the output voltage is 14.9 V at the secondary frequency of 75 Hz and 2.5 g. Under the frequencies of these two modes at 1 g, maximum peak power of 43.08 μW and 12.5 μW are achieved, respectively. Additionally, the fabricated device shows good stability, reaching and maintaining its voltage at 8 V when tested on a vacuum compression pump. The experimental results demonstrate the device has the ability to harvest energy from a wide range of low-frequency (<100 Hz) vibrations and has broad application prospects in self-powered electronic devices and systems.

This paper considers the vibration control of a single degree of freedom mass-spring-damper system when subjected to an arbitrary, unmeasurable disturbance. The idea of a disturbance observer is introduced and it is shown how an estimate of the excitation can be derived and used to generate a control, which reduces the vibration. This control is shown to be robust with respect to the parameters describing the behavior of the system. Experimental results are presented which show the efficacy of the method when the system is excited by periodic, random, and impact forces. Comments are made on the application of the method.
