Rectangular prismatic bodies can assume either a translatory or an auto-rotating mode of motion during free motion in the atmosphere. The translatory mode is stable only when the dimensionless moment of inertia of the bodies is large, however, large perturbations will always start auto-rotation. The characteristics of the auto-rotational mode are shown to depend primarily on the aspect ratio of the bodies which determines the dimensionless rotational speed and the lift coefficient. Both the average drag and lift-coefficients of auto-rotating bodies are estimated, but it is shown that secondary effects make it impossible to determine their exact trajectories in atmospheric flows.

We study experimentally the behaviour of a bubble injected into a horizontal liquid solid-body rotating flow, in a range of rotational velocities where the bubble is close to the axis of rotation. We first study the stretching of the bubble as a function of its size and of the rotation of the cell. We show that the bubble aspect ratio can be predicted as a function of the bubble Weber number by the model of Rosenthal (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 12, 1962, 358–366) provided an appropriate correction due to the impact of buoyancy is included. We next deduce the drag and lift coefficients from the mean bubble position. For large bubbles straddling the axis of rotation, we show that the drag coefficient $C_D$ is solely dependent on the Rossby number $Ro$, with $C_D \approx 1.5/Ro$. In the same limit of large bubbles, we show that the lift coefficient $C_L$ is controlled by the shear Reynolds number $Re_{shear}$ at the scale of the bubble. For $Re_{shear}$ larger than 3000 we observe a sharp transition, wherein large fluctuations in the bubble aspect ratio and mean position occur, and can lead to the break-up of the bubble. We interpret this regime as a resonance between the periodic forcing of the rotating cell and the eigenmodes of the stretched bubble.

A single bubble is placed in a solid-body rotating flow of silicon oil. From the measurement of its equilibrium position, lift and drag forces are determined. Five different silicon oils have been used, providing five different viscosities and Morton numbers. Experiments have been performed over a wide range of bubble Reynolds numbers (0.7 ≤ Re ≤ 380), Rossby numbers (0.58 ≤ Ro ≤ 26) and bubble aspect ratios (1 ≤ χ ≤ 3). For spherical bubbles, the drag coefficient at the first order is the same as that of clean spherical bubbles in a uniform flow. It noticeably increases with the local shear S = Ro−1, following a Ro−5/2 power law. The lift coefficient tends to 0.5 for large Re numbers and rapidly decreases as Re tends to zero, in agreement with existing simulations. It becomes hardly measurable for Re approaching unity. When bubbles start to shrink with Re numbers decreasing slowly, drag and lift coefficients instantaneously follow their stationary curves versus Re. In the standard Eötvös–Reynolds diagram, the transitions from spherical to deformed shapes slightly differ from the uniform flow case, with asymmetric shapes appearing. The aspect ratio χ for deformed bubbles increases with the Weber number following a law which lies in between the two expressions derived from the potential flow theory by Moore (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 6, 1959, pp. 113–130) and Moore (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 23, 1965, pp. 749–766) at low- and moderate We, and the bubble orients with an angle between its minor axis and the direction of the flow that increases for low Ro. The drag coefficient increases with χ, to an extent which is well predicted by the Moore (1965) drag law at high Re and Ro. The lift coefficient is a function of both χ and Re. It increases linearly with (χ − 1) at high Re, in line with the inviscid theory, while in the intermediate range of Reynolds numbers, a decrease of lift with aspect ratio is observed. However, the deformation is not sufficient for a reversal of lift to occur.

In this work, numerical simulations are performed in order to study the effects of aspect ratio (AR) and Reynolds number (Re) on flow characteristics of three side-by-side rectangular cylinders for fixed spacing ratio ( g ), using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). The Reynolds number varies within the range 60 ≤ Re ≤ 180, aspect ratio is between 0.25 and 4, and spacing ratio is fixed at g  = 1.5. The flow structure mechanism behind the cylinders is analyzed in terms of vorticity contour visualization, time-trace analysis of drag and lift coefficients, power spectrum analysis of lift coefficient and variations of mean drag coefficient, and Strouhal number. For different combinations of AR and Re, the flow is characterized into regular, irregular, and symmetric vortex shedding. In regular and symmetric vortex shedding the drag and lift coefficients vary smoothly while reverse trend occurs in irregular vortex shedding. At small AR, each cylinder experiences higher magnitude drag force as compared to intermediate and large aspect ratios. The vortex shedding frequency was found to be smaller at smaller AR and increased with increment in AR.

Non-pneumatic tyres (NPT) provide a greater advantage over the pneumatic type owing to their construct which increases the reliability of the tyre operation and effectively reduces maintenance involved. Analysing the aerodynamic forces acting on a NPT becomes a crucial factor in understanding it’s suitability for practical implementation. In the present work, the aerodynamic performance of a NPT using CFD tool – SimScale® is studied. This work includes a comparative study of a pneumatic tyre, a NPT with wedge spokes and a NPT with hexagonal spokes (NPT-HS). The effect of air velocity, steering (yaw) angle and camber angle on the aerodynamic performance of the NPT-HS is evaluated using CFD. By increasing the steering angle from 0° to 15°, the lift coefficient decreases by 37% approximately at all velocities. Whereas drag coefficient initially decreases by 21% till 7.5° steering angle and then starts increasing. Increasing camber angle from 0° to 1.5°, both drag and lift coefficients goes on decreasing by approximately 7% and 27% respectively.

The drag and lift forces acting on a rotating impenetrable spherical suspended nano-particle in a homogeneous uniform flow are numerically studied by means of a three-dimensional numerical simulation with slip boundary condition. The effects of both the slip coefficient and rotational speed of the nanosphere on the drag and lift forces are investigated for Reynolds numbers in the range of 0.1 < Re < 100. Increase of rotation increases the drag and lift force exerted by flow at the surface of nano-sphere. By increasing slip coefficient the values of drag and lift coefficients decreases. At full slip condition, rotation of the nano-sphere has not significant effects on the drag and lift coefficient values moreover the lift coefficient of flow around the rotating spherical particle will be vanished. Present numerical results at no-slip condition are in good agreements with certain results of flow around of rotating sphere.

Flywheel is a rotating mechanical device, which is generally used on four-wheeled vehicles. Flywheel has a moment of inertia that is able to withstand changes in rotational speed. The energy in flywheel is mechanical energy. This mechanical energy will be converted by generators into electrical energy. At the flywheel-based power plant, tests are carried out in the form of rotation, the generator power of the generator under no load or load conditions, and the time needed for this generator to survive. The results showed that the ability of the flywheel-based power plant in the condition without a backup supply to the motor in the condition of a generator without a load is able to generate power of 860.1 W for 22 seconds, while in a load-bearing generator capable of generating electricity by 708.75 W for 18 seconds

The influence of circumferential inflow distorted on the performance and flow behavior of a high aspect ratio, low speed contra rotating fan is reported in this paper. The total pressure at the inlet is artificially distorted by means of 90 deg mesh sector with a porosity of 0.70. The performance of the contra rotating fan was studied under different speed combinations of the two rotors under clean and distorted inflow conditions. Detailed flow analyses were conducted under design and off-design conditions. In order to understand the effect of distortion and its extent, the distortion sector was rotated circumferentially at intervals of 15 deg to cover the entire annulus. Detailed measurements of the total pressure, velocity components, and flow angles were carried out at the inlet of the first rotor, between the two rotors, and at the exit of the second rotor. The study reveals a few interesting aspects on the effect of inflow distortion on the performance of a contra-rotating stage. For the design speed combination and lower rotational speed of rotor-2, a reduction in the overall operating range with a shift of the peak pressure point towards higher mass flow rate, was observed. It is observed that the effect of inflow distortion at the inlet of rotor-1 gets transferred in the direction of rotor-1 rotation and spreads across the entire annulus. The opposite sense of rotation of rotor-2 causes the distortion effect to get transferred in the direction of rotation of rotor-2 with an associated reduction in the total pressure near the hub. It is observed that a higher rotational speed of the second rotor has a beneficial effect on the overall performance due to the strong suction by generated higher rotational speed of rotor-2.

Lentink & Dickinson (2009 J. Exp. Biol. 212 , 2705–2719. ( doi:10.1242/jeb.022269 )) showed that rotational acceleration stabilized the leading-edge vortex on revolving, low aspect ratio (AR) wings and hypothesized that a Rossby number of around 3, which is achieved during each half-stroke for a variety of hovering insects, seeds and birds, represents a convergent high-lift solution across a range of scales in nature. Subsequent work has verified that, in particular, the Coriolis acceleration plays a key role in LEV stabilization. Implicit in these results is that there exists an optimal AR for wings revolving about their root, because it is otherwise unclear why, apart from possible morphological reasons, the convergent solution would not occur for an even lower Rossby number. We perform direct numerical simulations of the flow past revolving wings where we vary the AR and Rossby numbers independently by displacing the wing root from the axis of rotation. We show that the optimal lift coefficient represents a compromise between competing trends with competing time scales where the coefficient of lift increases monotonically with AR, holding Rossby number constant, but decreases monotonically with Rossby number, when holding AR constant. For wings revolving about their root, this favours wings of AR between 3 and 4.

The paper presents an experimental study of convective heat transfer in radially rotating isothermal rectangular ducts with various height and width aspect ratios. The convective heat transfer is affected by secondary flows resulting from Coriolis force and the buoyancy flow, which is in turn due to the centrifugal force in the duct. The growth and strength of the secondary flow depend on the rotational Reynolds number; the effect of the buoyancy flow is characterized by the rotational Rayleigh number. The aspect ratio of the duct may affect the secondary flow and the buoyancy flow, and therefore is also a critical parameter in the heat transfer mechanism. In the present work the effects of the main flow, the rotational speed, and the aspect ratio γ on heat transfer are subjects of major interest. Ducts of aspect ratios γ=5, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.2 at rotational speed up to 3000 rpm are studied. The main flow Reynolds number ranges from 700 to 20,000 to cover the laminar, transitional, and turbulent flow regimes in the duct flow. Test data and discussion are presented.
