Analysis of Microwaviness-Excited Vibrations of a Flying Head Slider in Proximity and Asperity Contact Regimes

The vibration characteristics of a thermal fly-height control (TFC) head slider in the proximity and asperity contact regimes attract much attention, because the head–disk spacing (HDS) must be less than 1 nm in order to increase the recording density in hard disk drives. This paper presents a numerical analysis of the microwaviness (MW)-excited vibrations in the flying head slider during the touchdown (TD) process. We first formulate the total force applied to the TFC head slider as a function of the HDS, based on rough-surface adhesion contact models and an air-bearing force model. Then, the MW-excited vibrations of a single-degree-of-freedom (DOF) slider model at TD are simulated by the Runge–Kutta method. It is found that, when the MW amplitude is less than the spacing range of static instability in the total force, the slider jumps to a contact state from a near-contact or mobile-lubricant-contact state. It then jumps to a flying state even when the head surface is protruded further by increasing the TFC power. When the MW amplitude is relatively large, a drastically large spacing variation that contains a wide range of frequency components below 100 kHz appears in the static unstable region. These calculated results can clarify the mechanisms behind a few peculiar experimental phenomena reported in the past.

The flying height of a head slider in hard disk drives has been decreased close to 1 nm but still must be reduced to ∼0.5 nm in order to increase recording density. At such a narrow spacing, variation in head/disk spacing caused by microwaviness (MW) becomes a significant concern [1]. Some comprehensive numerical simulations of slider dynamics in the near-contact and contact regimes have been conducted [2–5]. However, the real physics behind slider dynamics does not seem to be fully elucidated because the head-disk interfacial force changes with differences in interfacial design conditions such as the air-bearing surface, surface roughness, and lubricant layer. In this study, we evaluated head-disk interfacial forces by asperity adhesive contact theories with measured asperity parameter values. The MW-excited vibrations of a thermal fly-height control (TFC) slider in proximity and asperity contact regimes were simulated by changing the design parameters. It was found that the simulated results allow us to understand typical experimental results reported in previous literature.

As an extension of the study presented in ISPS 2016, vibration characteristics of a commercially used head slider in hard disk drives at touchdown are analyzed by using a single degree-of-freedom (DOF) slider model, improved asperity adhesion force model, and air-bearing force model. Using parameter values at the head/disk interface, the total interfacial force was evaluated for various air bearing stiffness ratios r. Microwaviness (MW)-excited slider vibration was simulated near the boundary of instability onset (r = 2.4), and slight instability conditions at r = 2. It was found that the simulated results at r = 2.4 and 2 agree well with the touchdown vibrations of actual slider at ID and MD, respectively. The possibility of surfing recording is discussed.

Three dimensional elastic-plastic contact of two nominally flat rough surfaces is considered. Equations governing the shoulder-shoulder contact of asperities are derived based on the asperity-asperity constitutive relations from a finite element model of their elastic-plastic interaction. Shoulder-shoulder asperity contact yields a slanted contact force consisting of both tangential (parallel to mean plane) and normal components. Multiscale modeling of the elastic-plastic rough surface contact is presented in which asperity-level FE-based constitutive relations are statistically summed to obtain total force in the normal and tangential direction. The equations derived are in the form of integral functions and provide expectation of contact force components between two rough surfaces. An analytical fusion technique is developed to combine the piecewise asperity level constitutive relations. This is shown to yield upon statistical summation the cumulative effect resulting in the contact force between two rough surfaces with two components, one in the normal direction and a half-plane tangential component.

Superimposition of electrical stimulation during voluntary contractions is used to produce functional movements in individuals with central nervous system impairment, to evaluate the ability to activate a muscle, to characterize the nature of fatigue, and to improve muscle strength during postsurgical rehabilitation. Currently, the manner in which voluntary contractions and electrically elicited forces summate is not well understood. The objective of the present study is to develop a model that predicts the forces obtained when electrical stimulation is superimposed on a volitional contraction. Quadriceps femoris muscles of 12 able-bodied subjects were tested. Our results showed that the total force produced when electrical stimulation was superimposed during a volitional contraction could be modeled by the equation T = V + S[(MaxForce − V)/MaxForce]N, where T is the total force produced, V is the force in response to volitional contraction alone, S is the force response to the electrical stimulation alone, MaxForce is the maximum force-generating ability of the muscle, and N is a parameter that we posit depends on the differences in the motor unit recruitment order and firing rates between volitional and electrically elicited contractions. In addition, our results showed that the model predicted accurately (intraclass correlation coefficient ≥0.97) the total force in response to a wide range of stimulation intensities and frequencies superimposed on a wide range of volitional contraction levels. Thus the model will be helpful to clinicians and scientists to predict the amount of stimulation needed to produce the targeted force levels in individuals with partial paralysis.

Impact loads from waves on vessels and coastal structures are highly complex and may involve wave breaking, making these changes difficult to estimate numerically or empirically. Results from previous experiments have shown a wide range of forces and pressures measured from breaking and non-breaking waves, with no clear trend between wave characteristics and the localized forces and pressures that they generate. In 2008, a canonical breaking wave impact data set was obtained at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, by measuring the distribution of impact pressures of incident non-breaking and breaking waves on one face of a cube. The effects of wave height, wavelength, face orientation, face angle, and submergence depth were investigated. A limited number of runs were made at low forward speeds, ranging from about 0.5 to 2 knots (0.26 to 1.03 m/s). The measurement cube was outfitted with a removable instrumented plate measuring 1 ft2 (0.09 m2), and the wave heights tested ranged from 8–14 inches (20.3 to 35.6 cm). The instrumented plate had 9 slam panels of varying sizes made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and 11 pressure gages; this data was collected at 5 kHz to capture the dynamic response of the gages and panels and fully resolve the shapes of the impacts. A Kistler gage was used to measure the total force averaged over the cube face. A bottom mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) was used to obtain measurements of velocity through the water column to provide incoming velocity boundary conditions. A Light Detecting and Ranging (LiDAR) system was also used above the basin to obtain a surface mapping of the free surface over a distance of approximately 15 feet (4.6 m). Additional point measurements of the free surface were made using acoustic distance sensors. Standard and high-speed video cameras were used to capture a qualitative assessment of the impacts. Impact loads on the plate tend to increase with wave height, as well as with plate inclination toward incoming waves. Further trends of the pressures and forces with wave characteristics, cube orientation, draft and face angle are investigated and presented in this paper, and are also compared with previous test results.

A nonlinear dynamic model is developed to analyze the bouncing vibration of a partial contact air bearing slider, which is designed for the areal recording density in hard disk drives of 1 Tbit/in2 or even higher. In this model the air bearing with contact is modeled using the generalized Reynolds equation modified with the Fukui-Kaneko slip correction and a new second order slip correction for the contact situation [1]. The adhesion, contact and friction between the slider and the disk are also considered in the model. It is found that the disk surface roughness, which moves into the head disk interface (HDI) as the disk rotates, excites the bouncing vibrations of the partial contact slider. The frequency spectra of the slider’s bouncing vibration have high frequency components that correspond to the slider-disk contact.

In this document, using the anti-squeezed force model in the narrow parallel plate when fluid is squeezed, the equivalent stiffness and damping model is derived. It is further verified that it can increase the stiffness and damping while there are oil between the joint interfaces theoretically. Because the contact state of oily porous material can divide into liquid and solid parts, the document supposes that it is correct and effective to think the stiffness and damping of the two parts as shunt connection.

Intermolecular and surface forces contribute significantly to the total forces acting on air bearing sliders for flying heights below 5 nm. Their contributions to the total force increase sharply with the reduction in flying height, and hence their existence can no longer be ignored in air bearing simulation for hard disk drives. Various experimentally observed dynamic instabilities can be explained by the inclusion of these forces in the model for low flying sliders. In this paper parametric studies are presented using a 3-DOF model to better understand the effect of the Hamaker constants, suspension pre load and pitch angle on the dynamic stability/instability of the sliders. A stiffness matrix is used to characterize the stability in the vertical, pitch, and roll directions. The fly height diagrams are used to examine the multiple equilibriums that exist for low flying heights. It has been found that the system instability increases as the magnitude of the van der Waals force increases. It has also been found that higher suspension pre load and higher pitch angles tend to stabilize the system.
