Flow Field Characterization and Visualization of Grid Fin Subsonic Flow

Grid fins are unconventional control surfaces consisting of an outer frame supporting an inner grid of intersecting planar surfaces. Although afflicted with higher drag, these have been credited for their enhanced lifting characteristics at high angles of attack and high Mach numbers, alongside reduced hinge moments accounting for the recent upsurge in their usage on numerous aerospace applications. Present investigations carry out elaborate flow field visualization and characterization underlining the rudimentary physics through a sequence of subsonic numerical simulations performed at different angles of attack and different gap (between the members) to chord ratios on a simplified grid fin variant called cascade fin. The study makes use of a new nondimensionalization technique called cumulative nondimensionalization to decipher the effect of cascading on individual members of the fin. Hence, after a comprehensive examination of the aerodynamic coefficients, pressure coefficient distribution, pressure gradient, velocity gradient, boundary layer velocity profile, and flow field visualization, the study elucidates physics associated with hastened stall angle, augmented lift-drag, and bounded efficiency accretion for gap increment.

Grid fins consisting of a lattice of high aspect ratio planar members encompassed by an outer frame are unconventional control surfaces used on numerous missiles and bombs due to their enhanced lifting characteristics at high angles of attack and across wider Mach number regimes. The current paper accomplishes and compares the effect of different grid fin patterns on subsonic flow aerodynamics of grid fins by virtue of the determination of their respective aerodynamic forces. Furthermore, this study deliberates the impact of gap variation on aerodynamics of different patterns. Results enunciate enhanced aerodynamic efficiency, and lift slope for web-fin cells and single diamond patterns compared to the baseline model. Moreover, the study indicates improved aerodynamic performance for diamond patterns with higher gaps by providing elevated maximum lift coefficient, delayed stall angle, and comparable drag at lower angles. The study established the presence of an additional effect termed as the inclination effect alongside the cascade effect leading to deviations with respect to lift, stall, and aerodynamic efficiency amongst different gap variants of the individual patterns. Thus, optimization based on the aerodynamic efficiency, stall angle requirements, and construction cost by optimum pattern and gap selection can be carried out through this analysis, which can lead to elevated aerodynamic performance for grid fins.

ABSTRACTThis paper dwells upon investigating the effect of aspect ratio (AR) variation on the aerodynamic performance of unconventional control surfaces called grid fins by virtue of a series of subsonic experiments on a simplified grid fin variant called the cascade fin. Wind tunnel tests were performed for different AR (variable span) grid fins. The same had been investigated for different gap-to-chord ratio (g/c) variants. Results demonstrated a tangible increase in the aerodynamic efficiency as well as stall angle reduction for higher AR. Moreover, higher AR leads to increased pitching moment, which emphasizes elevated hinge moment requirements. The study ensued the presence of higher deviation between the low AR fins, that is $AR<2$ compared to the pertinent deviations between the high AR fins, that is $AR\geq2$ . The effect associated with these variations was termed as span effect in this paper. It was established that, the deviations arising due to this phenomena were lesser for higher g/c and higher AR. The analysis of AR variation for different g/c presented a limiting value of AR reduction for stall performance enhancement. Thus, optimised selection of the g/c and AR values can lead to enhanced aerodynamic efficiency alongside an improved stalling characteristic.

The effect of turning angle on the loss generation of Low Pressure (LP) Turbines has been investigated experimentally in a couple of turbine high-speed rigs. Both rigs consisted of a rotor-stator configuration. All the airfoils are high lift and high aspect ratio blades that are characteristic of state of the art LP Turbines. Both rigs are identical with exception of the stator. Therefore, two sets of stators have been manufactured and tested. The aerodynamic shape of both stators has been designed in order to achieve the same spanwise distribution of Cp (Pressure coefficient) over the airfoil surface, each one to its corresponding turning angles. Exit angle in both stators is the same. Therefore the change in turning is obtained by a different inlet angle. The aim of this experiment is to obtain the sensitivity of profile and endwall losses to turning angle by means of a back-to-back comparison between both sets of airfoils. Because the two sets of stators maintain the same pressure coefficient distribution, Reynolds number and Mach number, each one to its corresponding velocity triangles, one can state that the results are only affected by the turning angle. Experimental results are presented and compared in terms of area average, radial pitchwise average distributions and exit plane contours of total pressure losses. CFD simulations for the two sets of stators are also presented and compared with the experimental results.

Abstract The current research focuses on the laminar flow through permeable side-by-side bars of a square cross-section in a channel-confined domain. Vorticity generation on the leeward sides of the permeable bodies further necessitates the study for a better understanding of underlying physics. Reynolds number Re and Darcy number Da are varied from 5 to 150 and 10-6 to 10-2, respectively, at transverse gap ratios s/d=2.5-10. In the perspective of periodic unsteady flow, critical Re for the onset of vortex shedding is analyzed. Streamlines, vorticity, pressure coefficient distribution, and velocity profiles are discussed to identify the wake patterns. In lower permeability level, vortex-shedding from the permeable square cylinders is observed either in synchronized anti-phase mode or a single large vortex street with a synchronized in-phase pattern in the near wake. A steady-state wake pattern symmetric and flocked towards the centerline is observed for all s/d at a higher permeability level regardless of Re. Wake patterns are not altered for Da=10-6-10-3; instead, prompt extermination of the two vortex streets downstream is observed at Da=10-3 as compared to Da=10-6. The impact of s/d, Re, and permeability on the drag is examined. A jump in the flow characteristics and drag forces is noticed at higher Re for the mid-range Da remarkably at lower s/d. For the extent of high permeability, the drag coefficient asymptotically gets closer to zero.

Abstract Three-dimensional effects on slamming loads predictions of a ship section are investigated numerically using the unsteady incompressible Reynolds-Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and volume of fluid (VOF) method, which are implemented in interDyMFoam solver in open-source library OpenFoam. A convergence and uncertainty study is performed considering different resolutions and constant Courant number (CFL) following the ITTC guidelines. The numerical solutions are validated through comparisons of slamming loads and motions between the CFD simulations and the available experimental values. The total slamming force and slamming pressures on a 2D ship section and the 3D model are compared and discussed. Three-dimensional effects on the sectional force and the pressures are quantified both in transverse and longitudinal directions of the body considering various entry velocities. The non-dimensional pressure coefficient distribution on the 3D model is presented.

Abstract Endwall film cooling is a significant cooling method to protect the endwall region and the junction region of endwall and a turbine vane, where usually a relatively high temperature load exists. This work aims to find the optimized arrangement of film cooling holes on the endwall and improve the film cooling in some difficult regions on the endwall, such as pressure side-endwall junction region. Several ideas for film cooling hole arrangement design are proposed, based on the pressure coefficient distribution, the streamline distribution, and the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) distribution, respectively. Four specified designs are built and compared. The results are obtained by numerical calculations with a well-validated turbulence model, the k–ω shear stress transport (SST) model. From this work, the designs based on the pressure coefficient distribution (designs 1 and 2) force the flow from the pressure side to the suction side (SS), especially in design 2, which adopts compound angle holes. The designs based on pressure coefficients have benefit in the cooling of the SS but give worse coolant coverage on the pressure side. In addition, designs 1 and 2 have little influence on the original pressure field. The design based on the streamline distributions (design 3) has larger coolant coverage on the endwall and provides good coolant coverage on the endwall and pressure side junction region. The design based on the HTC distribution provides large overall film cooling effectiveness on both the pressure side and the SS. More film cooling holes are placed on the high temperature regions, which is more effective in practice.

Two-phase cross flow exists in many shell- and tube heat exchangers such as condensers, evaporators and nuclear steam generators. During the last two decades, research devoted to two-phase flow induced vibrations has increased, mainly driven by the nuclear industry. Flow-induced vibration excitation forces can cause excessive vibration which will result in long-term fretting-wear or fatigue. To avoid potential tube failures in heat exchangers, it is required for designer to have guidelines that incorporate flow-induced vibration excitation forces. The phenomenon of the vibration of tubes in two-phase flow is very complex and depends on factors which are nonexistent in single-phase flows. To understand the fluid dynamic forces acting on a structure subjected to two-phase flow, it is essential to get detailed information about the characteristics of two-phase flow. Pressure distributions generated by two-phase flow over tube surfaces yield more general information than the local velocity distribution. The pressure coefficient distribution obtained by experimental test has been evaluated.

The knowledge of heat loads on the turbine is of great interest to turbine designers. Turbulence intensity and stator-rotor axial gap plays a key role in affecting the heat loads. Flow field and associated heat transfer characteristics in turbines are complex and unsteady. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has emerged as a powerful tool for analyzing these complex flow systems. Honeywell has been exploring the use of CFD tools for analysis of flow and heat transfer characteristics of various gas turbine components. The current study has two objectives. The first objective aims at development of CFD methodology by validation. The commercially available CFD code Fine/Turbo is used to validate the predicted results against the benchmark experimental data. Predicted results of pressure coefficient and Stanton number distributions are compared with available experimental data of Dring et al. [1]. The second objective is to investigate the influence of turbulence (0.5% and 10% Tu) and axial gaps (15% and 65% of axial chord) on flow and heat transfer characteristics. Simulations are carried out using both steady state and harmonic models. Turbulence intensity has shown a strong influence on turbine blade heat transfer near the stagnation region, transition and when the turbulent boundary layer is presented. Results show that a mixing plane is not able to capture the flow unsteady features for a small axial gap. Relatively close agreement is obtained with the harmonic model in these situations. Contours of pressure and temperature on the blade surface are presented to understand the behavior of the flow field across the interface.

Velocity distributions within the boundary layer of a swirling flow of incompressible fluid in a convergent conical nozzle have been investigated. Theoretical calculations with boundary conditions more appropriate to physically existent situations discounted the existence of 'super-velocities’ within the boundary layer. Parallel experimental investigations demonstrated an interdependence of core and boundary-layer flows which precluded the maintenance of the flow conditions required by the analysis.
