The effect of leading edge film cooling on heat transfer was experimentally investigated using the naphthalene sublimation technique. The experiments were performed on a symmetrical model of the leading edge suction side region of a high pressure turbine blade with one row of film cooling holes on each side. Two different lateral inclinations of the injection holes were studied: 0° and 45°. In order to build a data base for the validation and improvement of numerical computations, highly resolved distributions of the heat/mass transfer coefficients were measured. Reynolds numbers (based on hole diameter) were varied from 4000 to 8000 and blowing rate from 0.0 to 1.5. For better interpretation, the results were compared with injection-flow visualizations. Increasing the blowing rate causes more interaction between the jets and the mainstream, which creates higher jet turbulence at the exit of the holes resulting in a higher relative heat transfer. This increase remains constant over quite a long distance dependent on the Reynolds number. Increasing the Reynolds number keeps the jets closer to the wall resulting in higher relative heat transfer. The highly resolved heat/mass transfer distribution shows the influence of the complex flow field in the near hole region on the heat transfer values along the surface.

The dependence of heat transfer on film cooling near the leading edge of a blade was investigated using the naphthalene sublimation technique and applying the analogy between heat and mass transfer. Therefore, the local sublimation rate with and without film cooling was measured. The symmetric leading edge was cooled by an air mass flow out of two staggered rows of holes. The measurements were carried out with a constant Reynolds number Re = 80000, different incidence angles φ = 0° to 10° and a blowing rate varying from M = 0.3 to 2.5. The flow without film cooling was visualized around the leading edge with smoke to indicate the existence of separation bubbles. To determine the dependence of incidence angle and blowing rate on jet trajectories, smoke was mixed to the cooling air. The mass transfer coefficient was determined with the naphthalene sublimation technique. Due to the high resolution of the sublimation technique the local mass transfer distribution around the cooling holes could also be measured. Furthermore, the location of stagnation points and separation bubbles were investigated. The results of the tests without film cooling were also compared with those obtained by observing stagnation point mass transfer on a cylinder and with those by laminar flow across a flat plate. The mass transfer coefficient of film cooling experiments was related to the mass transfer coefficient without film cooling to describe the local dependence of heat transfer coefficient on film cooling. An increase on relativ heat transfer near the film cooling holes is obtained by increasing the blowing rate. No further influence on heat transfer along the pressure side is detected for an incidence angle larger than 10° as the cooling films were shifted around the leading edge from the pressure to the suction side.

Pin-fins have been used to enhance the heat transfer near the trailing edge of a turbine airfoil. Previous pin-fin heat transfer studies focused mainly on the array geometry of pin height-to-diameter equal to unity in a stationary frame. This study experimentally examines the effects of pin height-to-diameter ratio (Hp/Dp) from 2 to 4 and rotation number (Ro) from 0 to 0.2. The tested model used a staggered pin-fin array with an inter-pin spacing of 2.5 times the pin-diameter (S/D = 2.5) in both longitudinal and transverse directions. Detailed heat/mass transfer coefficients were measured using the naphthalene sublimation technique with a heat-mass transfer analogy. The data measured suggest that an increase in Hp/Dp increases the level of array heat/mass transfer. Array averaged Sherwood numbers for Hp/Dp = 3 and Hp/Dp = 4 are approximately 10% and 35% higher than that of Hp/Dp = 2. The effect of rotation induces notable difference in heat/mass transfer between the leading surface and the trailing surface. The heat transfer coefficients change a little although the rotating number increases in the tested range because the pin-fins break the rotation-induced vortices.

Heat transfer coefficients and film cooling effectiveness values were obtained numerically on a film cooled 2-D gas turbine blade tip model featuring a cutback squealer. In addition, pressure distributions were obtained at 50% and 98% spans. The calculations were performed for a single blade with periodic boundary conditions imposed along the two mid-passage boundaries formed by the adjacent blades. The calculations were performed with the realizable k-ε turbulence model and non-equilibrium wall function using 1.1 million elements. The numerical results are obtained for 4 blowing ratios and for Reynolds number based on axial chord and inlet velocity of 75,000. Limited experimental measurements of the blade pressure distributions and the uncooled tip heat transfer coefficients were performed for validation of the numerical results. The experiments were conducted in a six-blade low-speed wind tunnel cascade at a Reynolds number of 75,000. The heat transfer experiment involved a transient infrared thermography technique. Experimental heat transfer coefficients were extracted using a transient technique. The predicted pressure distributions agree very well with the measurements while the heat transfer coefficient predictions show qualitative agreement. From the numerical results, it can be seen that as the blowing ratio is increased, larger regions of film cooling effectiveness were seen with higher effectiveness values between the camber line and suction side. Heat transfer coefficients were largest near the leading edge for all cases.

Mass transfer measurements are employed as alternative methods for heat transfer measurement because of the difficulty of heat transfer measurements in thin boundary layers, complicated secondary flows, and large thermal gradients. Even though mass transfer experiments are fast and show detailed local measurement data, the conversion of mass transfer results to heat transfer data requires the heat/mass transfer analogy factors in detail. Therefore, the usefulness of mass transfer data depends on finding a simple analogy factor. The heat/mass transfer analogy on a simulated turbine endwall with fillets is evaluated in the present paper. Since the heat/mass transfer analogy factor may not be always the same, the heat/mass transfer analogy should be verified for other different geometries and experimental conditions. To utilize the heat/mass transfer analogy fully, it is necessary to check that the presence of different aerodynamic conditions caused by the fillets affects the heat/mass transfer analogy on a simulated turbine endwall with fillets. To compare heat transfer data and mass transfer data, heat transfer measurements on the endwall with fillets are conducted with a thermal boundary layer measurement technique and mass transfer measurements employing naphthalene sublimation technique on the endwall with the fillets are extracted from literature with equivalent experimental conditions and a similar geometry. As expected by heat transfer and mass transfer equations, the heat/mass transfer analogy factor is applied and shows a good agreement between heat transfer and mass transfer results on the endwall with the fillets from the leading edge to the trailing edge.

The heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of an array of staggered plates, aligned parallel to the direction of a forced convection air flow, have been studied experimentally. During the course of the experiments, the plate thickness and Reynolds number were varied parametrically. Mass transfer measurements employing the naphthalene sublimation technique were made to obtain the heat transfer results via the heat-mass transfer analogy. For a given operating condition, the per-plate heat transfer coefficients were found to be the same for the second and all subsequent rows. The fully developed heat transfer coefficients increase with Reynolds number for all the plate thicknesses investigated, but in a different manner for the different thicknesses. In general, thicker plates give rise to higher heat transfer coefficients, especially at the larger Reynolds numbers. The measured friction factors also increase with plate thickness. For the thickest plates, the friction factor was found to be independent of the Reynolds number, signalling the dominance of inertial losses.

An experimental investigation is conducted to improve a slot film cooling system used for the cooling of a gas turbine combustor liner. The tangential slots are constructed of discrete holes with different injection types which are the parallel, vertical, and combined to the slot lip. The investigation is focused on the coolant supply systems of normal, inline, and counter-flow paths to the mainstream flow direction. A naphthalene sublimation technique has been employed to measure the local heat/mass transfer coefficients in a slot wall with various injection types and coolant feeding directions. A numerical simulation is also conducted to help understand the flow patterns inside the slot for different injection types. The velocity distributions at the exit of slot lip for the parallel and vertical injection types are fairly uniform with mild periodical patterns with respect to the injection hole positions. However, the combined injection type increases the nonuniformity of flow distribution with the period equaling twice that of hole-to-hole pitch due to splitting and merging of the ejected flows. The dimensionless temperature distributions at the slot exits differ little with blowing rates, injection types, and secondary flow conditions. In the results of heat/mass transfer measurements, the best cooling performance inside the slot is obtained with the vertical injection type among the three different injection types due to the effects of jet impingement. The lateral distributions of heat/mass transfer coefficients with the inline and counter-flow paths are more uniform than the normal-flow path. The average heat/mass transfer coefficients with the injection holes are about two to five times higher than that of a smooth two-dimensional slot path.

This paper presents the effects of downstream film cooling, with and without leading edge showerhead film cooling, on turbine vane external heat transfer. Steady-state experimental measurements were made in a three-vane, linear, two-dimensional cascade. The principal independent parameters—Mach number, Reynolds number, turbulence, wall-to-gas temperature ratio, coolant-to-gas temperature ratio, and coolant-to-gas pressure ratio—were maintained over ranges consistent with actual engine conditions. The test matrix was structured to provide an assessment of the independent influence of parameters of interest, namely, exit Mach number, exit Reynolds number, coolant-to-gas temperature ratio, and coolant-to-gas pressure ratio. The vane external heat transfer data obtained in this program indicate that considerable cooling benefits can be achieved by utilizing downstream film cooling. The downstream film cooling process was shown to be a complex interaction of two competing mechanisms. The thermal dilution effect, associated with the injection of relatively cold fluid, results in a decrease in the heat transfer to the airfoil. Conversely, the turbulence augmentation, produced by the injection process, results in increased heat transfer to the airfoil. The data presented in this paper illustrate the interaction of these variables and should provide the airfoil designer and computational analyst with the information required to improve heat transfer design capabilities for film-cooled turbine airfoils.

Detailed heat/mass transfer distributions are presented inside a two-pass rotating ribbed coolant channel for two profiled-rib configurations. Several profiled-rib configurations have been studied (Acharya et al., 2000), and it was found that the best performance was achieved by saw-tooth ribs, and a pyramid–valley rib combination. The profiled ribs were placed directly opposite to each other on the leading and trailing surfaces. Smooth side walls were used in all the experiments. Heat transfer measurements were compared with straight ribs of equal blockage ratio. The measurements were made in a two-pass rotating facility using the naphthalene sublimation mass transfer technique, which provides highly resolved surface distributions. The results presented are for a Reynolds number of 30,000, two rotation numbers (0 and 0.3), and include average heat/mass transfer over the entire inter-rib module as well as detailed heat/mass transfer contours for two profiled-rib cases. Significant enhancement of up to 25 percent in heat/mass transfer was obtained with the pyramid–valley and saw-tooth shaped ribs under rotating conditions.

The local heat/mass transfer characteristics on the tip and shroud were investigated using a low speed rotating turbine annular cascade. Time-averaged mass transfer coefficients on the tip and shroud were measured using a naphthalene sublimation technique. A low speed wind tunnel with a single stage turbine annular cascade was used. The turbine stage is composed of sixteen guide plates and blades. The chord length of blade is 150 mm and the mean tip clearance is about 2.5% of the blade chord. The tested Reynolds number based on inlet flow velocity and blade chord is 1.5×105 and the rotational speed of the blade is 255.8 rpm at design condition. The results were compared with the results for a stationary blade and the effects of incidence angle of incoming flow were examined for incidence angles ranging from −15 to +7deg. The off-design test conditions are obtained by changing the rotational speed with a fixed incoming flow velocity. Flow reattachment on the tip near the pressure side edge dominates the heat transfer on the tip surface. Consequently, the heat/mass transfer coefficients on the blade tip are about 1.7 times as high as those on the blade surface and the shroud. However, the heat transfer on the tip is about 10% lower than that for the stationary case due to reduced leakage flow with the relative motion. The peak regions due to the flow reattachment are reduced and shifted toward the trailing edge and additional peaks are formed near the leading edge region with decreasing incidence angles. But, quite uniform and high values are observed on the tip with positive incidence angles. The time-averaged heat/mass transfer on the shroud surface has a level similar to that of the stationary cases.

Gas turbine hot gas path components are protected through a combination of internal cooling and external film cooling. The coolant typically travels through internal passageways, which may involve impingement on the internal surface of a turbine component, before being ejected as film cooling. Internal cooling effects have been studied in facilities that allow measurement of heat transfer coefficients within models of the internal cooling paths, with large heat transfer coefficients generally desirable. External film cooling is typically evaluated through measurements of the adiabatic effectiveness and its effect on the external heat transfer coefficient. Efforts aimed at improving cooling are often focused on either only the internal cooling or the film cooling; however, the common coolant flow means the internal and external cooling schemes are linked and the coolant holes themselves provide another convective path for heat transfer to the coolant. Recently, measurements of overall cooling effectiveness using matched Biot number turbine component models allow evaluation of the nondimensional wall temperature achieved for the fully cooled component. However, the relative contributions of internal cooling, external cooling, and convection within the film cooling holes is not well understood. Large scale, matched Biot number experiments, complemented by CFD simulations, were performed on a fully film cooled cylindrical leading edge model to evaluate the effects of various alterations in the cooling design on the overall effectiveness. The relative influence of film cooling and cooling within the holes was evaluated by selectively disabling individual holes and quantifying how the overall effectiveness changed. Several internal impingement cooling schemes in addition to a baseline case without impingement cooling were also tested. In general, impingement cooling is shown to have a negligible influence on the overall effectiveness in the showerhead region. This indicates that the cost and pressure drop penalties for implementing impingement cooling may not be compensated by an increase in thermal performance. Instead, the internal cooling provided by convection within the holes themselves was shown, along with external film cooling, to be a dominant contribution to the overall cooling effectiveness. Indeed, the numerous holes within the showerhead region impede the ability of internal surface cooling schemes to influence the outside surface temperature. The results of this research may allow improved focus of future efforts on the forms of cooling with the greatest potential to improve cooling performance.
