Over the past few years, academic institutions have become aware of the importance of innovation in education, as well as its broader role in strengthening the economy. Creativity and innovative thinking are not easily taught in the classroom, but they can be developed through practice and experience. Evaluating innovation as part of product design courses has thus become very important to increase the probability of students becoming innovators in the real world. Innovation tournaments provide universities with an opportunity to develop innovative design thinking in students while they gain practical experience. Understanding design innovation at a deeper level in the context of student design projects is critical to develop realistic perspectives among students. Determining the appropriate dimensions for understanding and measuring innovation is the main objective of this paper. Toward that objective, we conducted initial experiments in conjunction with an innovation award to develop and assess innovation metrics. The results reveal several dimensions of innovation: differentiability, creativity, need satisfaction, and probability of commercial success emerged as key dimensions. This research also assesses the perception of innovation, contrasting the perceptions of judges from industry with the views of academically oriented judges.

With the rapid development of society and economy, the level of technology and culture in our country is constantly improving, and the content of product design extends from the product appearance design to the design of a whole system of product function, structure, material, production crafts, marketing, maintenance and recycling. The product innovation design thinking should not only consider a single factor, but also integrate the latest achievements in all aspects of the product design ecosystem. The research on innovative thinking and innovative design methods from all walks of life is also constantly systematized and theorized, but the innovative design thinking of products has different thinking characteristics and methods from other fields. This article combines product design examples of intelligent waste paper recycling machines to explore the application of innovative thinking methods in product design.

The fast pace and great pressure of modern life have made people’s psychological problems more and more serious. The outbreak of COVID-19 at the end of 2019 has accelerated the development of depression, anxiety, nervous tension and other emotions in all aspects. In severe cases, it leads to insomnia. In this paper, the impact of the epidemic on people’s psychology is extensively investigated by innovative thinking. Based on the current design status of existing emotional soothing products, this article summarizes the development trends as well as the shortcomings of sleep aid products, and tries to use new technologies and materials to provide new solutions to problems for people with insomnia. Through the design of digital sleep aid products, modern technology is used to meet the practical needs of modern people and to care for the targeted insomniac.•Human-centered computing

This book, hereinafter referred to as the Guide, has been developed for those social analysts (e.g., anthropologists, sociologists, and human geographers) who have had little or no practical experience in applying their knowledge as development practitioners. In the past, development projects would be analysed from a narrow financial and economic perspective. But with the evolution of thinking on development, this narrow financial and economic aspect has now been broadened to include the impact on society as the very meaning of development has now come to symbolise social change. Thus, development is not restricted only to plans and figures; the human environment in its entirety is now considered for analysis while designing and implementing development projects.

The article deals with the concept of flat Earth. There has a adherents and defenders in the modern world, despite the solid age of heliocentric teaching. Flat Earth apologists point out, that the evidence in favor of the scientific heliocentric theory is held on confidence. People should trust the testimony of astronauts, space exploration data, and more. However, the vast majority of people cannot verify this data from their own practical experience. If science is a criterion for truth, then the heliocentric concepts and flat Earth are far removed from this criterion. Moreover, in the cultural experience of the past we can find arguments in favor of the concept of a flat Earth. These testimonies are contained, in particular, in the Old Testament Bible, the sacred texts of Christianity and Judaism. The mythological and religious texts of other nations and cultures also refer to the idea of a flat Earth.

Most engineering design projects focus primarily on the engineering fundamentals. Studying the business case or manufacturability of a design is often left for other courses, if at all. To address this gap, an existing mechanical engineering course project was modified by embedding the interdependent entrepreneurial dimensions. In the past, junior engineering students developed a reciprocating air engines over two semesters. The modified project extended the engineering fundamentals into an entrepreneurial venture. To accomplish this, students were asked to propose an air engine toy for middle schoolers. The proposed toy had to be assembled, provide a learning opportunity, and demonstrate utility. The students had to ensure the product appealed to those interested in the STEM fields. The students, working in groups, created renders of the final product, assembly instructions, and a guided worksheet for the kids to explore the underlying engineering concept. The groups produced a website with a video pitching their toy concepts. This case study exemplifies how any engineering endeavor can be modified to capture a more holistic simulation of the profession.

We think it will be generally acknowledged that the problem which the treatment of noisy, destructive, and dirty patients sets to their medical officers is greatest as regards their management at night. It is then undoubtedly that noise, destructiveness, and dirty habits have the greatest chance of getting free play, and it is then that the efforts for reformation have to be greatest. If these efforts are successful considerably more than half the problem will have been solved. It is to this part of the question, viz. the supervision of such patients during the night, that we desire in this paper to direct attention. At the outset it may be stated that our proposals are not theoretical. They are the result of practical experience gained during the past four years in the Sunderland Asylum. The special arrangements we propose to describe were instituted by one of us at the opening of the institution four years ago. At first a few cases were dealt with tentatively, but, as the first results were so encouraging, the number of cases was gradually increased, until all the patients who were restless, noisy, destructive, or of dirty habits came without exception to be dealt with. The asylum, situated at Ryhope, is a small one, containing only 350 beds, and on this account, as well as because it was new, it was conveniently suited for such an experiment. It may be well before going further to describe the arrangements now in existence there. There are 175 beds for each sex, made up as follows:—45 single rooms, one fully padded, and 2 half-padded; 2 small dormitories of 7 each, 2 of 13 each, 2 of 19 each, and 2 of 26 each. In the last two there is a night attendant, and one also in one of the dormitories for 19, which is the hospital ward. There is, in addition, a head night attendant who visits the patients in these dormitories and also all the remaining patients every hour, or oftener when necessary. There are thus 4 of a night staff for 175 patients. Though this is probably a large proportion compared to most public asylums, it is not claimed as a new departure in asylum management, as we are aware that in a number of asylums the advantage of having a large night staff is fully realised and acted on. The essential feature of the arrangements at Ryhope, to which we wish to direct attention, is the selection of cases placed in dormitories under constant supervision. Of course, all epileptics and suicidal patients are placed there. But, in addition, all recent cases of whatever kind, all dirty and destructive cases, and those who sleep badly and are in consequence inclined to chatter or be noisy, are also placed under constant supervision. Looked at from the other side, all single rooms and dormitories not under constant supervision are reserved for quiet and well-behaved patients who do not require any special attention during the night. This plan has been found to work exceedingly well, and since it was organised we have never had occasion to think of adopting any other. Another testimony to its effectiveness is that those of the staff who have the actual supervision of the patients and have had experience in other asylums are unanimous in their opinion that the arrangement is a very decided improvement. This opinion, let it be observed, is not based on the ground that now their duties are lighter than they were, because, as a matter of fact, they are more onerous.

In Canada the hockey arena has served as a place where individuals would not only gather to play hockey but a place for socializing on and off the ice. With today’s high pace, high demand life styles and with the shift in individual’s needs and desires, the arena has lost all of its interactive and engaging traits with the user and observer. The arena offers nothing besides hockey. This thesis will examine the reconsideration of hockey arena design for a sustainable future. Through literatures on past and present arenas designs, sustainability in sports designs and designing sports facilities for communities as a designer we are able to generate new and innovative design responses. Commencing with case studies on sustainable sports design projects, lessons can be learnt to help gather successful design traits, in addition to learning from mistakes of the past. Through a design proposal which implements a new and innovative scheme, and by challenging design through the three issues of sustainability, will aid in demonstrating how by expanding the role of the arena will provide beneficiary needs and desires for a community. This would potentially add to longevity of the infrastructure while increasing its overall building usage. By addressing these problems as a designer we can recreate the arena back into a destination point in which it once was, but now with new flexible, interactive and engaging community and public spaces.

The many speculative writings found in Finnish architect Alvar Aalto's notes show an interesting array of information about the construction of a knowledge society, and the formation of networks, in which sharing and exchanging new knowledge among different bodies of architectural agencies become possible. These notes reveal insightful remarks, his personal accounts on the Internet and the growing Network Society that could be regarded as pioneering scholarly engagements, which still further stimulate new and profoundly articulated reflections in architectural theory. At the same time, these notes also encourage further scholarly studies on the possible relationships between time and space on philosophical grounds. With respect to his writings, one can summarize Aalto's contribution under three major headings: the future is nestled in the past; often what is sought is located in the unthinkable; and of many, Alvar Aalto will never cease to be new, unexpected and innovative in his design thinking methods and procedures.
