Influence of Tip Shroud Cavity Detailing on Turbine Blade Forcing Calculations

Forced response in turbomachinery refers to the vibration of a component due to an excitation originating from another component. Obstacles, such as struts and blade rows in the upstream and downstream flow path of a turbomachine engine lead to engine order (EO) excitations. To be able to predict the severity of these excitations, both aerodynamic and structural calculations are performed. There is a risk of critical high cycle fatigue (HCF) failure when the force acts at a resonance frequency. Customarily, forcing calculations exclude detailing features, such as leakage flows. The current investigation uses a two stage subsonic model steam turbine configuration with shrouded rotor blades to demonstrate the influence of neglecting flow through seal cavities for blade forcing predictions. Upstream and down-stream vanes are the excitation sources on the rotor blade. Calculation results are compared for a configuration including and excluding the tip shroud cavity. Computed data is compared to available pressure data from tests in the model turbine. The investigation shows for the first blade passing excitation at design point that the axial and circumferential rotor forcing change by +22%, respectively +4% when including the tip shroud cavity for the investigated configuration. The change in forcing arises from the interaction of the leakage flow with the main stream flow. For highly loaded designs this can be of importance if there is a critical excitation.

Abstract The effect of the tip-shroud seal on the flutter onset of a shrouded turbine rotor blade, representative of a modern gas turbine, is numerically tested and the contribution to the work-per-cycle of the aerofoil and the tip-shroud are clearly identified. The numerical simulations are conducted using a linearised frequency domain solver. The flutter stability of the shrouded rotor blade is evaluated for an edgewise mode and compared with the standard industrial approach of not including the tip-shroud cavity. It turns out that including the tip shroud significantly changes the stability prediction of the rotor blade. This is due to the fact that the amplitude of the unsteady pressure created in the inter-fin cavity, due to the motion of the airfoil, is much greater than that of the airfoil. It is concluded that the combined effect of the seal and its platform tends to stabilise the rotor blade for all the examined nodal diameters and reduced frequencies. Finally, the numerical results are shown to be consistent with those obtained using an analytical simplified model to account for the effect of the labyrinth seals.

This paper deals with performance, forced response and surge issues arising in ice-damaged IP compressor assemblies. In addition to the inherent blade-passing excitation, damaged rotor blades may cause low engine-order excitation for both upstream and downstream blade rows, the strength of which depends on the severity, location and circumferential distribution of the damage. Similarly, performance and surge stability are related to the nature of the blockage caused by the damaged blades. Several symmetric and asymmetric damage configurations were studied using a 49-bladed rotor assembly in order to quantify the consequences of ice damage and assess the maximum amount of damage that can be tolerated. Both single-row part-annulus and multi-row whole-annulus models were used in the numerical study.

Abstract The accurate prediction of high cycle fatigue (HCF) is becoming one of the key technologies in the design process of state-of-the-art axial compressors. If they are not properly designed, both rotor blades and stator vanes can be damaged. There are two main factors to cause HCF. One is low engine order (LEO) and the other is high engine order (HEO) excitation by fluid force associated with adjacent rotor-stator interaction. For the front stages of axial compressors for power generations and aero engines, the inlet Mach number of a rotor tip typically exceeds the speed of sound and strong shock waves tend to be induced. This can be the source of HEO excitation fluid force, and adjacent stator vanes are sometimes severely damaged. Thus, the aim of this study is to establish an efficient method for predicting the vibration response in this type of problem with high accuracy. To achieve this, numerical investigations are carried out by one-way fluid structure interaction (FSI) simulation. To validate the accuracy of FSI simulation, experiments are also conducted using a gas turbine engine for power generation. In the experiment, the vibration level is measured with strain gauges mounted on the surface of stator vanes and the data are compared with the predicted results. In the first part of the study, efficient prediction methods of excitation fluid force on the stator vane are investigated by time transformation (TT) and harmonic balance (HB) methods. Their accuracies are evaluated by comparing the results with those calculated by transient rotor stator (TRS) simulation whose pitch ratio is one between rotor and stator computational domains. It is found that the TT method can accurately predict the excitation fluid force with lower computation load even when there are pitch differences between rotor and stator regions. In the second part of the study, forced response analyses are carried out using the excitation fluid force obtained in the unsteady flow simulation. To obtain the total damping of the system, both hammering test and flutter simulations are carried out. Computed results are validated with experimental data and it is found that the predicted vibration level is in good agreement with experimental results. Through this study, the effectiveness of one-way FSI simulation is confirmed for this type of forced response prediction. By utilizing the combination of efficient unsteady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods and harmonic response analysis, vibration amplitude can be predicted accurately and efficiently.

This paper provides an extended design criteria toolbox, as well as validation data, for control-stage design based on experimental data to reduce HCF incidents in partial-admission turbines. The upstream rotor in a two-stage air test turbine is instrumented with pressure transducers and strain gauges. Admission degrees extend from 28.6% to 100%, as one or two admission arcs are simulated by blocking segmental arcs immediately upstream of the first stator vanes with aerodynamically shaped filling blocks. Sweeps across a speed range of 50%–105% of design speed are performed at a constant turbine pressure ratio during simultaneous high-speed acquisition. A forced-response analysis is performed and results presented in Campbell diagrams. Partial admission creates a large number of low-engine-order forced responses because of the blockage, pumping, loading, and unloading processes. Combinations of the number of rotor blades and low-engine-order excitations are the principal sources of forced-response vibrations for the turbine studied here. Altering the stator and/or rotor pitches changes the excitation pattern. We observed that a relationship between the circumferential lengths of the admitted and nonadmitted arcs dictates the excitation forces and may serve as a design parameter.

A comprehensive investigation is presented related to leakage-induced blade excitation from shrouded vane segments found in industrial gas turbine compressors. The focus of the investigation is to explore the excitation mechanism acting on downstream rotor blades that stem from the particularly complex leakage flows around the hub inter-segment gaps. The aerodynamic forces are here determined using 3D nonlinear time-marching CFD simulations. The employed computational model encompasses the two rear-most stages in an existing industrial gas turbine compressor. The inter-segment gap is implemented in the next-to-last stator, varying from no gap to twice the nominal gap size. Obtained results indicate that the excitation induced by the inter-segment gap leakage flows is distinctly multi-harmonic and unexpectedly strong. As much as five times the excitation strength of upstream wakes was observed already for the nominal gap. The induced unsteady forces were found to derive from two different sources: (i) a large separation producing local forcing in the hub region; and (ii) circumferentially varying flow speed resulting in distributed forcing over the entire blade. The findings imply that the excitation induced by inter-segment gap leakage flows can be a significant contributor to blade vibratory responses in the intermediate engine order range, and thereby add to the knowledge base related to blade dynamic integrity.

Second, the effect of the outer shroud of the rotor blade, which usually is not included either in the simulations, has an opposite trend with the nodal diameter than the airfoil reducing the maximum and minimum damping. It is concluded that the combined effect of the seal and its platform tends to stabilize the edgewise mode of the rotor blade for all the examined nodal diameters and reduced frequencies. Finally, the numerical results are shown to be consistent with those obtained using an analytical simplified model to account for the effect of the labyrinth seals.

Extensive investigations have been conducted to study the vibration localization phenomenon and the excessive forced response that can be caused by mistuning in bladed disks. Most previous researches have focused on analyzing∕predicting localization or attacking the mistuning issue via mechanical tailoring. Few have focused on developing effective vibration control methods for such systems. This study extends the piezoelectric network concept, which has been utilized for mode delocalization in periodic structures, to the control of mistuned bladed disks under engine order excitation. A piezoelectric network is synthesized and optimized to effectively suppress vibration in bladed disks. One of the merits of such an approach is that the optimum design is independent of the number of spatial harmonics, or engine orders. Local circuits are first formulated by connecting inductors and resistors with piezoelectric patches on the individual blades. Although these local circuits can function as conventional damped absorber when properly tuned, they do not perform well for bladed disks under all engine order excitations. To address this issue, capacitors are introduced to couple the individual local circuitries. Through such networking, an absorber system that is independent of the engine order can be achieved. Monte Carlo simulation is performed to investigate the effectiveness of the network for a bladed disk with a range of mistuning level of its mechanical properties. The robustness issue of the network in terms of detuning of the electric circuit parameters is also studied. Finally, negative capacitance is introduced and its effect on the performance and robustness of the network is investigated.

Even though interest in labyrinth seal flows has increased recently, an analytical model capable of predicting turbine flow response to labyrinth seals is still lacking. Therefore, this paper presents a new model to predict flow response in an axial turbine stage with a shrouded rotor. A concentric model is first developed, and this model is used to develop an eccentric model. Basic conservation laws are used in each model, and a nonaxisymmetric sealing gap is prescribed for the eccentric model. Thus, the two models can predict the evolution of a uniform upstream flow into a nonuniform downstream flow. In turbines with concentric shrouded rotors, the seal flow is retarded in the axial direction and tangentially underturned. In turbines with eccentric shrouded rotors, flow azimuthally migrates away from and pressure reaches its peak near the maximum sealing gap region. Finally, the rotordynamic implications of such flow nonuniformities are discussed and compared against eccentric unshrouded turbine predictions.

Recent demands for a reduction of specific fuel consumption of jet engines have been opposed by increasing propulsive efficiency with higher bypass ratios and increased engine sizes. At the same time the challenge for the engine development is to design safe and efficient fan blades of high aspect ratios. Since the fan is the very first rotor stage, it experiences significant distortions in the incoming flow depending on the operating conditions. Flow distortions do not only lead to a performance and stall margin loss but also to remarkable low engine order (LEO) excitation responsible for forced vibrations of fundamental modes. Additionally, fans of jet engines typically suffer from stall flutter, which can be additionally amplified by reflections of acoustic pressure waves at the intake. Stall flutter appears before approaching the stall line on the fan’s characteristic and limits its stable operating range. Despite the fact that this “flutter bite” usually affects only a very narrow speed range, it reduces the overall margin of safe operation significantly. With increasing aspect ratios of ultra-high bypass ratio jet engines the flutter susceptibility will probably increase further and emphasizes the importance of considering aeromechanical analyses early in the design phase of future fans. This paper aims at proving that intentional mistuning is able to remove the flutter bite of modern jet engine fans without raising issues due to heavily increased forced vibrations induced by LEO excitation. Whereas intentional mistuning is an established technology in mitigating flutter, it is also known to amplify the forced response. However, recent investigations considering aeroelastic coupling revealed that under specific circumstances mistuning can also reduce the forced response due to engine order excitation. In order to allow a direct comparison and to limit costs as well as effort at the same time, the intentional mistuning is introduced in a non-destructive way by applying heavy paint to the blades. Its impact on the blade’s natural frequencies is estimated via finite element models with an additional paint layer. In parallel, this procedure is experimentally verified with painted fan blades in the laboratory. A validated SNM (subset of nominal system modes) representation of the fan is used as a computational model to characterize its mistuned vibration behavior. Its validation is done by comparing mistuned mode shape envelopes and frequencies of an experimental modal analysis at rest with those obtained by the updated computational model. In order to find a mistuning pattern minimizing the forced response of mode 1 and 2 at the same time and satisfying stability and imbalance constraints, a multi-objective optimization has been carried out. Finally, the beneficial properties of the optimized mistuning pattern are verified in a rig test of the painted rotor.
