A Study of Performance and Flow Mechanism of a Slot-Groove Hybrid Casing Treatment in a Low-Speed Compressor

A “slot-groove” hybrid casing treatment (CT) is proposed elicited from the recent research on the role of axial location for stall margin improvement (SMI). This combination is expected to display the advantages of both slots and grooves while minimizing their disadvantages. A comparative study is conducted among the “slot-groove”, traditional circumferential groove CT (called the “full-groove” CT) and axial skewed slot CT (known as the “full-slot” CT) to evaluate performance and to explore the stability enhancement and efficiency loss mechanisms of the “slot-groove” CT in a low-speed axial compressor. Results of the combination of laboratory tests and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) data demonstrate that the performance level of the hybrid CT lies in between those two traditional CTs. Simulation results indicate that the difference in the SMIs generated by CTs is closely related to their influences on the vortex trajectory of tip leakage. The stronger and tighter the vortex is, the more the vortex trajectory is inclined toward the blade suction side. Consequently, the interface between tip leakage flow and incoming main flow is pushed downstream and stability is enhanced. The flow loss induced by CTs is explored based on the entropy contours, and the high entropy in the “slot-groove” treated casing produces more efficiency decrease than the “full-groove” CT. Incorporating the “full-slot” CT not only increases entropy generation in the axial skewed slots but also induces considerable flow loss in the blade passage near the casing, thus reducing efficiency most significantly.

Circumferential single-groove casing treatment becomes an interesting topic in recent few years, because it is a good tool to explore the interaction between the groove and the flow in blade tip region. The stall margin improvement (SMI) as a function of the axial groove location has been found for some compressors, such a trend cannot be predicted by steady high-fidelity CFD simulations. Recent efforts show that to catch such a trend, multi-passage, unsteady flow simulations are needed as the stalling mechanism itself involves cross-passage flows and unsteady dynamics. This indicates a need to validate unsteady numerical simulation results. In this paper, an extensive experimental study of a total of fifteen single casing grooves in a low-speed axial compressor rotor is presented, the groove location varies from 0.4% to 98.3% of axial tip chord are tested. The unsteady pressure data both at casing and at the blade wake with different groove locations are measured and processed, including the movement of trajectory of tip leakage flow, the evolution of unsteadiness of tip leakage flow (UTLF), the unsteady spectrum signature during the stall process, and the outlet unsteady flow characteristic along the span. These data provide a case study for validation of the unsteady CFD results, and may be helpful for further interpretation on the stalling mechanism affected by circumferential casing grooves.

Abstract Tip clearance of axial compressor blades allows leakage of the flow, generates significant losses and reduces the compressor efficiency. The present paper aims to discuss the axial compressor tip aerodynamics for various configurations of tip gap with trench. The various configurations are obtained by varying the clearance, trench depth, step geometry and casing contouring. In this paper the axial compressor aerodynamics for various configurations of tip gap with trench have been studied. The leakage flow structure, vorticity features and entropy generations are analyzed using RANS based CFD. The linear compressor cascade comprises of NACA 651810 blade with clearance height varied from 0.5% to 2% blade span. Trail of the tip leakage vortex and the horseshoe vortex on the blade suction side are clearly seen for the geometries with and without casing treatments near the stalling point. Since the trench side walls are similar to forward/backing steps, a step vortex is observed near the leading edge as well as trailing edge of the blade and is not seen for the geometry without the casing treatment. Even though the size of the tip leakage vortex seams to be reduces by providing a trench to the casing wall over the blade, the presence of additional vortices like the step vortex leads to comparatively higher flow losses. An increase in overall total pressure loss due to the application of casing treatment is observed. However an increase in stall margin for the geometries with casing is noted.

Slot-type casing treatment generally has a great potential of enhancing the operating range for tip-critical compressor rotors, however, with remarkable efficiency drop. Part I of this two-part paper was committed to develop a slot configuration with desired stall margin improvement and minimized efficiency loss. Steady simulation was carried out in a 1.5 transonic axial compressor stage at part design rotating speed. At this rotating speed this compressor stage operated at a subsonic condition and showed a rather narrow operating range, which needed to be improved badly. Flow fields analysis at peak efficiency and near stall point showed that the development of tip leakage vortex and resulting blockage near casing resulted in numerical stall. Three kinds of skewed slots with same rotor exposure and casing porosity were designed according to the tip flow field and some empirical strategies. Among three configurations, arc-curved skewed slot showed minimum peak efficiency drop with considerable stall margin improvement. Then rotor exposure and casing porosity were varied based on the original arc-curved skewed slot, with a special interest in detecting their impact on the compressor stability and overall efficiency. Result showed that smaller rotor exposure and casing porosity leaded to less efficiency drop. But meanwhile, effectiveness of improving compressor stability was weakened. The relation between efficiency drop and stall margin improvement fell on a smooth continuous curve throughout all slots configurations, indicating that the detrimental effect of casing treatment on compressor was inevitable. Flow analysis was carried out for cases of smooth casing and three arc-curved configurations at smooth casing near stall condition. The strength of suction/injection, tip leakage flow behavior and removal of blockage near casing were detailed examined. Larger rotor tip exposure and slots number contributed to stronger injection flow. The loss generated within the mixing process of injection flow with main flow and leakage flow is the largest source of entropy increase. Further loss mechanisms were interpreted at eight axial cuts, which were taken through the blade row and slots to show the increase in entropy near tip region. Entropy distributions manifested that loss generations with smooth casing were primarily ascribed to low-momentum tip leakage flow/vortex and suction surface separation at leading edge. CU0 slot, the arc-curved slots with 50% rotor tip exposure, was capable of suppressing the suction surface separation loss. Meanwhile, accelerated tip leakage flow brought about additional loss near casing and pressure surface. Upstream high entropy flow would be absorbed into the rear portion of slots repeatedly, resulting in further loss.

The stall margin of tip-critical axial compressors can be improved by using circumferential casing grooves. From previous studies, in the literature, the stall margin improvement due to the casing grooves can be attributed to the reduction of the near casing blockage. The pressure rise across the compressor as the compressor is throttled intensifies the tip leakage flow. This results in a stronger tip leakage vortex that is thought to be the main source of the blockage. In this paper, the near casing blockage due to the tip region aerodynamics in a low-speed axial compressor rotor is numerically studied and quantified using a mass flow-based blockage parameter. The peak blockage location at the last stable operating point for a rotor with smooth casing is found to be at about 10% of the tip chord aft of the tip leading edge. Based on this information, an optimised single casing groove design that minimises the peak blockage is found using a surrogate-based optimisation approach. The implementation of the optimised groove is shown to produce a stall margin improvement of about 5%.

This work focuses its attention on possibilities to enhance the stability of an axial compressor using a casing treatment technique. Circumferential grooves machined into the case are considered and their performances evaluated using three-dimensional steady state computational simulations. The effects of rectangular and new T-shape grooves on NASA Rotor 37 performances are investigated, resolving in detail the flow field near the blade tip in order to understand the stall inception delay mechanism produced by the casing treatment. First, a validation of the computational model was carried out analysing a smooth wall case without grooves. The comparisons of the total pressure ratio, total temperature ratio and adiabatic efficiency profiles with experimental data highlighted the accuracy and validity of the model. Then, the results for a rectangular groove chosen as the baseline case demonstrated that the groove interacts with the tip leakage flow, weakening the vortex breakdown and reducing the separation at the blade suction side. These effects delay stall inception, improving compressor stability. New T-shape grooves were designed keeping the volume as a constant parameter and their performances were evaluated in terms of stall margin improvement and efficiency variation. All the configurations showed a common efficiency loss near the peak condition and some of them revealed a stall margin improvement with respect to the baseline. Due to their reduced depth, these new configurations are interesting because they enable the use of a thinner light-weight compressor case as is desirable in aerospace applications.

Abstract Numerical simulations were carried out with the purpose of investigating the effect of applying circumferential grooves at axial compressor casing passive wall treatment to enhance the stall margin and change the tip leakage flow. The tip leakage flow is pointed out as one of the main contributors to stall inception in axial compressors. Hence, it is of major importance to treat appropriately the flow in this region. Circumferential grooves have shown a good performance in enhancing the stall margin in previous researches by changing the flow path in the tip clearance region. In this work, a passive wall treatment with four circumferential grooves was applied in the transonic axial compressor NASA Rotor 37. Its effect on the axial compressor performance and the flow in the tip clearance region was analyzed and set against the results attained for the smooth wall case. A 2.63% increase in the operational range of the axial compressor running at 100%N, was achieved, when compared with the original smooth wall casing configuration. The grooves installed at compressor casing, causes an increase in the flow entropy generation due to the high viscous effects in this gap region, between the rotor tip surface and casing with grooves. These viscous effects cause a drop in the turbomachine efficiency. For the grooves configurations used in this work, an efficiency drop of 0.7% was observed, compared with the original smooth wall. All the simulations were performed based on 3D turbulent flow calculations using Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations, and the flow eddy viscosity was determined using the two-equation SST turbulence model. The details of the grooves geometrical dimensions and its implementation are described in the paper.

This paper addresses the effect of the recessed blade tip with and without a porous material on the performance of a transonic axial compressor. A commercial flow solver was employed to analyze the performance and the internal flow of the axial compressor with three different tip configurations: reference tip, recessed tip and recessed tip filled with a porous material. It was confirmed that the recessed blade tip is an effective method to increase the stall margin in an axial compressor. It was also found in the present study that the strong vortex formed in the recess cavity on the tip pushed the tip leakage flow backward and weakened the tip leakage flow itself, consequently increasing the stall margin without any penalty of the efficiency in comparison to the reference tip. The recessed blade tip filled with a porous material was suggested with hope to obtain the larger stall margin and the higher efficiency. However, it was found that a porous material in the recess cavity is unfavorable to the performance in both the stall margin and the efficiency. An attempt has been made to explain the effect of the recess cavity with and without a porous material on the flow in an axial compressor.

The detailed evolutionary processes of the tip leakage flow/vortex inside the rotor passage are still not very clear for the difficulties of investigating of them by both experimental and numerical methods. In this paper, the flow fields near the rotor tip region inside the blade passage with two tip gaps, 0.5% and 1.5% blade height respectively, were measured by using stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV) in a large-scale low speed axial compressor test facility. The measurements are conducted at four different operating conditions, including the design, middle, maximum static pressure rise and near stall conditions. In order to analyze the variations of the characteristics of the tip leakage vortex (TLV), the trajectory, concentration, size, streamwise velocity, and the blockage parameters are extracted from the ensemble-averaged results and compared at different compressor operating conditions and tip gaps. The results show that the formation of the TLV is delayed with large tip clearance, however, its trajectory moves much faster in an approximately linear way from the blade suction side to pressure side. In the tested compressor, the size of the tip gap has little effects on the scale of the TLV in the spanwise direction, on the contrary, its effects on the pitch-wise direction is very prominent. Breakdown of the TLV were both found at the near-stall condition with different tip gaps. The location of the initiation of the TLV breakdown moves downstream from the 60% chord to 70% chord as the tip gap increases. After the TLV breakdown occurs, the flow blockage near the rotor tip region increases abruptly. The peak value of the blockage effects caused by the TLV breakdown is doubled with the tip gap size increasing from 0.5% to 1.5% blade span.

This paper deals with the numerical simulation of technologies to increase the compressor performances. The objective is to extend the stable operating range of an axial compressor stage using passive control devices located in the tip region. First, the behavior of the tip leakage flow is investigated in the compressor without control. The simulation shows an increase in the interaction between the tip leakage flow and the main flow when the mass flow is reduced, a phenomenon responsible for the development of a large flow blockage region at the rotor leading edge. A separation of the rotor suction side boundary layer is also observed at near stall conditions. Then, two approaches are tested in order to control these flows in the tip region. The first one is a casing treatment with nonaxisymmetric slots. The method showed a good ability to control the tip leakage flow but failed to reduce the boundary layer separation on the suction side. However, an increase in the operability was observed but with a penalty for the efficiency. The second approach is a blade treatment that consists of a longitudinal groove built in the tip of each rotor blade. The simulation pointed out that the device is able to control partially all the critical flows with no penalty for the efficiency. Finally, some recommendations for the design of passive treatments are presented.

Casing pressure measurements and Stereoscopic Particle-Image Velocimetry (SPIV) measurements are used together to characterize the behavior of the rotor tip leakage flow at both the design and near-stall conditions in a low-speed multistage axial compressor. A three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver is also performed for the multistage compressor and the prediction of tip leakage flow is compared with SPIV data and casing dynamic static pressure data. During the experiment 10 high-frequency Kulite transducers are mounted in the outer casing of the rotor 3 to investigate the complex flow near the compressor casing and Fourier analyses of the dynamic static pressure on the casing of the rotor 3 are carried out to investigate the tip leakage flow characteristics. At the same time, the two CCD cameras are arranged at the same side of the laser light sheet, which is suitable for investigating unsteady tip leakage flow in the multistage axial compressor. The SPIV measurements identify that the tip leakage flow exists in the rotor passage. The influence of tip leakage flow leads to the existence of low axial velocity region in the rotor passage and the alternating regions of positive and negative radial velocity indicates the emergence of tip leakage vortex (TLV). The trajectory of the tip leakage vortex moves from the suction surface toward the pressure surface of adjacent blade, which is aligned close to the rotor at the design point (DP). However, the tip leakage vortex becomes unstable and breaks down at the near-stall point (NS), making the vortex trajectory move upstream in the rotor passage and causing a large blockage in the middle of the passage.
