Development of an Improved Streamline Curvature Approach for Transonic Axial Compressor

In this paper, an improved streamline curvature (SLC) approach is presented to obtain the internal flow fields and evaluate the performance of transonic axial compressors. The approach includes some semi-empirical correlations established based on previous literatures, such as minimum loss incidence angle model, deviation model and total pressure loss model. Several developments have been made in this paper for the purpose of considering the influences of three-dimensional (3D) flow in high-loaded multistage compressors with high accuracy. A revised deviation model is applied to predict the cascade with large deflection range. The method for predicting the shock loss is also discussed in detail. In order to validate the reliability of the approach, two test cases including a two-stage transonic fan and a three-stage transonic compressor are conducted. The overall performance and distribution of spanwise aerodynamic parameters are illustrated in this paper. Compared with both the experimental and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) data at design and a number of different off-design condition, the SLC results give reasonable characteristic curves. The validation demonstrates that this improved approach can serve as a fast and reliable tool for flow field analysis and performance prediction in preliminary design stage of axial compressors.

This paper presents in detail the improved streamline curvature approach (SLC) to the performance evaluation and internal flow field calculation of subsonic and transonic axial compressors. Based on previous research, the diverse incidence, deviation and total pressure loss models, generally existing in the form of fitting curves and semi-empirical correlations, are discussed respectively. Typically, transonic flow in axial compressor results in the variation of several flow parameters and particularly the appearance of shock waves compared with subsonic flow. In this paper, the revision and improvement of loss models are applied to reach higher accuracy, especially considering the loss component due to actual incidence angle. Several modifications have been made as well considering the influence of three-dimensional flow. For the purpose of validating this approach, two test cases, including a single-stage transonic axial compressor NASA Stage37 and a 3-stage subsonic axial compressor P&W 3S1, are calculated. The overall characteristics and spanwise aerodynamic parameters for blade rows are demonstrated at both design and off-design conditions. Furthermore, the results agree well with both experimental data and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) results. This throughflow method is verified as an applicable and convenient tool for aerodynamic analysis and performance prediction of subsonic and transonic axial compressors.

Abstract Rotating stall is a natural limit to the stable operating range of compressors due to the inverse pressure gradient of viscous gas. Effective prediction of compressor stall boundary is an important guarantee for the successful development of aeroengine. In this paper, a three-dimensional unsteady through-flow model based on body force theory is developed to reflect the dynamic stall process of multistage axial compressors with acceptable computational costs. The influence of blade geometric parameters is fully considered in blade force source terms. The source terms are related to the attack angle and Mach number of the blade inlet using the deviation angle and loss model in the through-flow theory. Meanwhile, the temporal lag response of the source terms to the upstream flow conditions is taken into account. Therefore, it can be utilized for predicting the off-design performance and rotating stall characteristics of multistage axial compressors. The developed model is validated on a two-stage low-speed axial compressor. The calculated performance line and stall cell speed are in agreement with the experimental results. The unsteady flow behavior of the compressor during stall is presented by the model. The results indicate that the developed model has the potential to be applied to the preliminary evaluation of compressor stability in design stage.

Secondary flows involving cross flow and three-dimensional separation phenomena in modern axial compressors at high stage loading contribute significantly to a reduction in overall efficiency. This two-part paper presents a numerical study on the potential aerodynamic benefits of using non-axisymmetric end walls in an axial compressor, involving both the rotor and the stator row. This first paper describes the sequential profiling of stator end walls in a transonic compressor at several operating points to suppress separation. An automated multi-objective optimizer connected to a 3-D RANS flow solver was used to find the optimal end wall geometries. As a design exercise, the stator hub end wall of Configuration I of the Darmstadt Transonic Compressor was first optimized at design conditions, keeping the shroud end wall constant. This led to an increase in efficiency of 1.8% due to the suppression of the hub-corner stall. However, this was accompanied by an increased area of reverse flow at the casing, which was even more distinct at off-design conditions near stall. The numerical surge limit of the datum axisymmetric design could no longer be reached and was then determined by the new separation close to the stator casing. A subsequent optimization of the shroud end wall was carried out using the improved profiled hub as the initial design. An operating point near stall with a strongly developed separation was chosen for this purpose. The second optimization resulted in a further improvement in the characteristic speed line over the entire off-design region. Although the shroud contour was designed at off-design conditions, the optimization gained an additional 0.03% in efficiency for the design point. The lower surge limit of the datum design could also be reached again, even at higher efficiency and pressure ratios. The investigations showed that end wall profiling in high loaded compressor stators can be considered as a good supplement to 3-D blading to control separation areas and improve the entire component’s characteristics.

Measurements have been performed in a low-speed high-reaction single-stage axial compressor. Data obtained within and downstream of the rotor, when correlated with the results of other investigations, provide a link between the existence of suction surface–hub corner separations, their associated loss mechanisms, and blade loading. Within the stator, it has been shown that introducing a small clearance between the stator blade and the stationary hub increases the efficiency of the stator compared to the case with no clearance. Oil flow visualizaton indicated that the leakage reduced the extensive suction surface–hub corner separation that would otherwise exist. A tracer gas experiment showed that the large radial shifts of the surface streamlines indicated by the oil flow technique were only present close to the blade. The investigation demonstrates the possible advantages of including hub clearance in axial flow compressor stator blade rows.

A one-dimensional centrifugal compressor performance prediction technique that has been available for some time is updated as a result of extracting the component performance from three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analyses. Confidence in the CFD results is provided by comparison of overall performance for one of the compressor examples. The extracted impeller characteristic is compared with the original impeller loss model, and this indicated that some improvement was desirable. The position of least impeller loss was determined using a traditional axial compressor cascade method, and suitable algebraic expressions were derived to match the CFD data. The merit of the approach lies with the relative ease that CFD component performance currently can be achieved and adjusting one-dimensional methods to agree with the CFD-derived models.

A three-dimensional (3D) CFD-based design method for high-speed axial compressor blades is being developed based on the discrete adjoint method. An adjoint code is built corresponding to RVC3D, a 3D turbomachinery Navier-Stokes analysis code developed at NASA Glenn. A validation study with the Euler equations indicates that the adjoint sensitivities are sensitive to the choice of boundary conditions for the adjoint variables in internal flow problems and constraints may be needed on internal boundaries to capture proper physics of the adjoint system. The design method is demonstrated with inverse design based on Euler physics, and the results indicate that the adjoint design method produces efficient 3D designs by drastically reducing the computational cost.

Abstract Compared to the traditional casing treatment, the self-recirculating casing treatment (SCT) can improve or not decrease the compressor efficiency while achieving the stall margin improvement. For the bleed port, the main design indicator is to reduce the flow loss caused by suction, while providing sufficient jet flow and jet pressure to the injector. In order to gain a better study of the bleed port stabilization mechanisms, the bleed configuration was parameterized with the bleed port inlet width and the bleed port axial position. Five kinds of recirculating casing treatments were applied to a 1.5-stage transonic axial compressor with the method of three-dimensional unsteady numerical simulation. Fifteen identical self-recirculating devices are uniformly mounted around the annulus. The numerical results show that the SCT can improve compressor total pressure ratio and stability, shift the stall margin towards lower mass flows. Furthermore, it has no impact on compressor efficiency. The optimal case presents that stability margin is improved by 6.7% employing 3.1% of the annulus mass flow. Expanding bleed port inlet width to an intermediate level can further enhance compressor stability, but excessive bleed port inlet width will reduce the stabilization effect. The optimal bleed port position is located in the blocked area of the low energy group at the top of the rotor. In the case of solid casing, stall inception was the tip blockage, which was mainly triggered by the interaction of the tip leakage vortex and passage shock. From radial distribution, the casing treatment predominantly affects the above 70% span. The reduction of tip reflux region by suction effect is the main reason for the extension of stable operation range. The SCT also has an obvious stability improvement in tip blockage stall, while delaying the occurrence of compressor stall.

The regenerative flow compressor used in fuel-cell cars generates high aerodynamic noise, which is the main source of noise. Compared with the research on centrifugal or axial turbomachinery, research on the noise of regenerative flow compressors is far from adequate. This paper presents the on-going work on it at Tongji University based on both experimental and computational works. In this study, a three-dimensional unsteady computational fluid dynamic model of the compressor was constructed with the large eddy approach. The pressure fluctuation, vortex noise source and Ffowcs William-Hawkings (FW-H) method were used to analyze the characteristics of the aerodynamic noise sources. Additionally, the far-field aerodynamic noise generated by the internal flow of the compressor was predicted using the aeroacoustic finite element method. The simulation results were validated with the experimental data. It was found that combining the fluid dynamic model and aeroacoustic finite element analysis promising results for aerodynamic noise prediction of compressors could be produced. The effects of the impeller parameters on the aerodynamic noise of the compressor were also studied.

It has long been known that the energy losses occurring in an axial compressor or turbine cannot be fully accounted for by the skin-friction losses on the blades and annulus walls. The difference, usually termed secondary loss, is attributed to miscellaneous secondary flows which take place in the blade row. These flows both cause losses in themselves and modify the operating conditions of the individual blade sections, to the detriment of the overall performance. This lecture analyses the three-dimensional flow in axial compressors and turbines, so that, by appreciation of the factors involved, possible methods of improving the performance can readily be investigated. The origin of secondary flow is first examined for the simple case of a straight cascade. The physical nature of the flow, and theories which enable quantitative estimates to be made, are discussed at some length. Following this, the three-dimensional flow in an annulus with a stationary blade row is examined, and, among other things, the influence of radial equilibrium on the flow pattern is noted. All physical restrictions are then removed, and the major factors governing the three-dimensional flow in an actual machine are investigated as far as is possible with existing information, particular attention being paid to the influence of a non-uniform velocity profile, tip clearance, shrouding, and boundary layer displacement. Finally the various empirical factors used in design are discussed, and the relationships between them established.
