The Impact of the Multiple Reference Frame Interface on Modelling the Interaction Between IGVs and the Impeller in Turbocharger Compressors

In this paper numerical investigations are presented of how the axial position of the multiple reference frame (MRF) stator-rotor interface between the inlet guide vanes (IGVs) and the impeller would influence the predicted flow field for a turbocharger centrifugal compressor when simulated by the steady RANS method. In the first step, a total of three different axial positions of the MRF IGV-impeller interface were considered and compared with the results of an unsteady simulation to evaluate their accuracy. The results showed that the choice of the MRF interface location significantly influenced the predicted overall performance. At the lower rotational speed, the peak efficiency varied by 1.3% and the corresponding total pressure ratio varied by 0.022. At the high rotational speed, the different axial locations of the MRF interface varied the predicted choke point by 0.012 normalized mass flow rate. The mass flow rate of the near surge (NS) point was over estimated at both the high and low rotational speed by at least 0.038 normalized mass flow rate. Consideration of the flow field suggested that the MRF interface between the IGV and the impeller should be placed towards the upstream side of the available region to avoid being unphysically influenced by its interaction with the non-uniform pressure in the downstream subsonic flow field and to enable a more accurate prediction of the extent of the inducer shock in transonic operating situations. Based on this understanding, a further improvement was made for the setting of the MRF interface by employing a polyline interface. This achieved a more accurate numerical result for the NS operating point at low rotational speeds. The position of the MRF interface for modelling IGVs in a turbocharger compressor should be suitably chosen according to the objectives of the numerical study.

In this investigation an attempt is made to find the best hub to tip ratio, the maximum number of blades, and the best angle of attack of an axial fan with flat blades at a fixed rotational speed for a maximum mass flow rate in a steady and turbulent conditions. In this study the blade angles are varied from 30 to 70 degrees, the hub to tip ratio is varied from 0.2 to 0.4 and the number of blades are varied from 2 to 6 at a fixed hub rotational speed. The results show that, the maximum flow rate is achieved at a blade angle of attack of about 45 degrees for when the number of blades is set equal to 4 at most rotational velocities. The numerical results show that as the hub to tip ratio is decreased, the mass flow rate is increased. For a hub to tip ratio of 0.2, and an angle of attack around 45 degrees with 4 blades, a maximum mass flow rate is achieved.

Performance of generic rim seal configurations, axial-clearance rim seal (ACS), radial-clearance rim seal (RCS), radial-axial clearance rim seal (RACS) are compared under realistic working conditions. Conjugate heat transfer analysis on rim seal is performed in this paper to understand the impact of ingestion on disc temperature. Results show that seal effectiveness and cooling effectiveness of RACS are the best when compared with ACS and RCS, the minimum mass flow rate for seal of RACS is 75% of that of RCS, and 34.6% of ACS. Authors compare the disc temperature distribution between different generic rim seal configurations where the RACS seems to be favorable in terms of low disc temperature. In addition, RACS has higher air-cooled aerodynamic efficiency, minimizing the mainstream performance penalty when compared with ACS and RCS. Corresponding to the respective minimum mass flow rate for seal, the air-cooled aerodynamic efficiency of RACS is 23.71% higher than that of ACS, and 12.79% higher than the RCS.

Turbocharger compressor, when fitted to a vehicle, usually operates with a curved inlet pipe which leads to distorted inlet flow field, hence deteriorating compressor flow capability. During the measurement of compressor performance, turbocharger-engine matching and controller design, the inlet flow field is, however, assumed to be uniform, which deviates from the real-world conditions. Consequently, the overall system performance could be compromised if the inlet distortion effect is ignored. To address this issue, in this article, a turbomachinery physics-based zero-dimensional model was proposed for the mass flow rate of a compressor with distorted inlet flow field due to 90° and 180° bent inlet pipe. The non-uniform flow is approximated as two-zone flow field, similar to parallel compressors, with the total pressure deviation between two zones modeled as a function of the flow velocity and pipe geometry. For each flow zone, the corresponding mass flow rate is estimated by approximating each sub-compressor as an adiabatic nozzle, where the fluid is driven by external work delivered by a compressor wheel governed by Euler’s turbomachinery equation. By including turbomachinery physics and compressor geometry information into the modeling, the model achieves high fidelity in compressor map interpretation and extrapolation, which is validated in experiments and the three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic simulation.

Abstract Axial flow fans (AFF) are extensively used in various industrial sectors, usually with flows of low resistance and high mass flow rates. The blades, the hub and the shroud are the three major parts of an AFF. Various kinds of optimisation can be implemented to improve the performance of an AFF. The most common type is found to be geometric optimisation including variation in number of blades, modification in hub and shroud radius, change in angle of attack and blade twist, etc. After validation of simulation model and carrying out a grid independence test, parametric analysis was done on an 11-bladed AFF with a shroud of uniform radius using ANSYS Fluent. The rotational speed of the fan and the velocity at fan inlet were the primary variables of the study. The variation in outlet mass flow rate and total pressure was studied for both compressible and incompressible ambient flows. Relation of mass flow rate and total pressure with inlet velocity is observed to be linear and exponential respectively. On the other hand, mass flow rate and total pressure have nearly linear relationship with rotational speed. A comparison of several different axial flow tracks with the baseline case fills one of the research gaps.

Abstract Rotating stall is a non-axisymmetric disturbance in axial compressors arising at operating conditions beyond the stability limit of a stage. Although well-known, its driving mechanisms determining the number of stall cells and their rotational speed are still marginally understood. Numerical studies applying full-wheel 3D unsteady RANS calculations require weeks per operating point. This paper quantifies the capability of a more feasible quasi-2D approach to reproduce 3D rotating stall and related sensitivities. The first part of the paper deals with the validation of a numerical baseline the simplified model is compared to in detail. Therefore, 3D computations of a state-of-the-art transonic compressor are conducted. At steady conditions the single-passage RANS CFD matches the experimental results within an error of 1% in total pressure ratio and mass flow rate. At stalled conditions, the full-wheel URANS computation shows the same spiketype disturbance as the experiment. However, the CFD underpredicts the stalling point by approximately 7% in mass flow rate. In deep stall, the computational model correctly forecasts a single-cell rotating stall. The stall cell differs by approximately 21% in rotational speed and 18% in circumferential size from the experimental findings. As the 3D model reflects the compressor behaviour sufficiently accurate, it is considered valid for physical investigations. In the second part of the paper, the validated baseline is reduced in radial direction to a quasi-2D domain only resembling the compressor tip area. Four model variations regarding span-wise location and extent are numerically investigated. As the most promising model matches the 3D flow conditions in the rotor tip region, it correctly yields a single-cell rotating stall. The cell differs by only 7% in circumferential size from the 3D results. Due to the impeded radial migration in the quasi-2D slice, however, the cell exhibits an increased axial extent. It is assumed, that the axial expansion into the adjacent rows causes the difference in cell speed by approximately 24%. Further validation of the reduced model against experimental findings reveals, that it correctly reflects the sensitivity of circumferential cell size to flow coefficient and individual cell speed to compressor shaft speed. As the approach reduced the wall clock time by 92%, it can be used to increase the physical understanding of rotating stall at much lower costs.

This paper evaluates the on-sun performance of a 1 MW falling particle receiver. Two particle receiver designs were investigated: obstructed flow particle receiver versus free-falling particle receiver. The intent of the tests was to investigate the impact of particle mass flow rate, irradiance, and particle temperature on the particle temperature rise and thermal efficiency of the receiver for each design. Results indicate that the obstructed flow design increased the residence time of the particles in the concentrated flux, thereby increasing the particle temperature and thermal efficiency for a given mass flow rate. The obstructions, a staggered array of chevron-shaped mesh structures, also provided more stability to the falling particles, which were prone to instabilities caused by convective currents in the free-fall design. Challenges encountered during the tests included nonuniform mass flow rates, wind impacts, and oxidation/deterioration of the mesh structures. Alternative materials, designs, and methods are presented to overcome these challenges.

Abstract In this paper, we use various regression models and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to predict the centrifugal compressor performance map. Particularly, we study the accuracy and efficiency of Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) and Artificial Neural Networks in modelling the pressure ratio, given the mass flow rate and rotational speed of a centrifugal compressor. Preliminary results show that both GPR and ANN can predict the compressor performance map well, for both interpolation and extrapolation. We also study the data augmentation and data minimzation effects using the GPR. Due to the inherent pressure ratio data distribution in mass-flow-rate and rotational-speed space, data augmentation in the rotational speed is more effective to improve the ANN performance than the mass flow rate data augmentation.

The aim of this experimental study is to investigate the mass flow rate of the lubricating oil in a hermetic reciprocating compressor. Essential parameters affecting the performance of the lubrication are the rotational speed of the crankshaft, the viscosity of the oil, the operating temperature and the submersion depth of the crankshaft. An experimental setup was built as to measure the oil mass flow rate with respect to the oil temperature variation during different operating conditions. The influence of the governing parameters such as the rotational speed, temperature (viscosity) and the submersion depth on the mass flow rate from crankshaft outlet are studied in detail. In addition, the oil flow visualization from the upper hole of the crankshaft is performed using a high-speed camera in order to observe the effectiveness of the lubrication of the various parts of the compressor. This study reveals that with increasing rotational speed, the submersion depth of the crankshaft and with decreasing viscosity of the lubricant, the mass flow rate from the crankshaft increases.

In Brazil, the National Oil Agency — ANP and the National Metrology Institute elaborated Regulation No 1, on June 19th 2000. This government decree approves the Regulation of the Measurement Technique of Oil and Natural Gas, which establishes the minimum conditions and requirements for the oil and natural gas measurement systems, in order to guarantee accurate and complete results. The natural gas measurement fiscal systems must be projected, calibrated and operated so that the measurement uncertainty does not exceed 1.5%. Based on the norms AGA and ISO, the mathematical model for the calculation of the mass flow rate, depends on quantities that have well known uncertainty such as: orifice plate diameter, pipeline internal diameter, compressibility factor, discharge coefficient, differential pressure, static pressure and flow temperature. However, for the molar mass standard uncertainty fixed values are utilized in Brazil (mainly by IPT and PUC-RJ), around 0.30%, independent of the natural gas composition. The objective of this work is to develop a methodology to calculate the molar mass uncertainty of the natural gas derived from its chemical composition, analyzed by gaseous chromatography and to comparing it with the value currently practiced, evaluating the impact proceeding from this difference in the mass flow rate of the natural gas. Based on this methodology, the molar mass uncertainty is around 0.05% and the fiscal system uncertainty decreases in more than 10% when it is compared with the mass molar fixed value uncertainty.

In core gas turbines relatively cold air is purged through the hub gap between stator and rotor in order to seal the disc space against flow ingestion from the main annulus. Although the sealing mass flow rate is commonly very small compared to the main annulus mass flow rate, it can have significant effects on the development of the passage endwall flows and on the overall loss generation. In this paper, the interaction between annulus and rim sealing flows is investigated using numerical simulations of a generic high-pressure turbine. At first, the numerical approach is validated by comparing the results of calculations to measurement data at the design flow conditions. Following that, results from steady and unsteady calculations are used to describe in detail the aerodynamics in overlap-type rim seals and their effects on the blade passage flow. It is found that the flow interaction at the rim seal interface is strongly influenced by the velocity deficit of the rim sealing flow relative to the annulus flow as well as by the circumferentially non-uniform pressure field imposed by the rotor blades. At typical sealing flow conditions, the flow interaction is found to be naturally unsteady, with periodical vortex shedding into the rotor passage. Finally, the influence of the specific rim seal shape on the flow unsteadiness at the rim seal interface is investigated and the impact on turbine performance is assessed.
