First In / First Out (FIFO) accumulating storage systems combine high-density storage with automatic material handling. A traditional FIFO storage system is a flow-through rack which uses gravity to move the pallet from the load end to the unload end. High-density storage installations require a significant difference in height between the load end and the unload end which results in a loss of available storage space. Rack configuration in terms of slope, brake configuration, and roller density is inflexible and are a function of pallet type, size, and weight. Changes in pallet characteristics cannot be easily accommodated by traditional gravity flow storage rack systems. Alternate FIFO storage systems are available that do not use gravity but rather use rollers on a horizontal reciprocating frame with directional flippers to ensure that the load indexes from the load end to the unload end. The limitations of these existing systems have prompted the development of alternative FIFO storage system. This paper details an innovative FIFO storage/handling system and the collaborative effort between a university and private industry to develop this product.

More than six million women worldwide use contraceptive injection and the popular contraceptive method used is contraceptive pill. Combined pill contraceptives have side effects, which are increased triglyceride and total cholesterol levels and changes in carbohydrate metabolism while the DMPA is irregular menstruation/amenorrhea, weight changes and lipid changes.This research is an observational with Cross Sectional Comparative approach to 36 combination pill acceptor and 36 DMPA acceptor. This study was conducted ini the area of Andalas and Lubuk Buaya Health Center. The sampling method used in this research was simple random sampling method. The analysis was used T-Independent test. The results showed that Low Density Lipoprotein levels DMPA (63,97 ± 12,75 mg/dl) vs combined contraceptive pill (89,66 ± 28,39 mg/dl) p = 0,25 and High Density Lipoprotein levels DMPA (63,97± 12,75 mg/dl) vs combined contraceptive pill (60,06 ± 15,57 mg/dl), p = 0,25. Results of this study concluded that there was significant difference in average of Low Density Lipoprotein and High Density Lipoprotein levels in the combined contraceptive pill and Medroxy Progesteron Acetate Depot acceptor but statistically the difference was no significant.

This paper addresses the order picking problem in a material handling system consisting of multiple carousels and one picker. Carousels are rotatable closed-loop storage systems for small items, where items are stored in bins along the loop. An order at carousels consists ofndifferent items stored there. The objective is to find an optimal picking sequence to minimizing the total order picking time. After proving the problem to be strongly NP-hard and deriving two characteristics, we develop a dynamic programming algorithm (DPA) for a special case (two-carousel storage system) and an improved nearest items heuristics (INIH) for the general problem. Experimental results verify that the solutions are quickly and steadily achieved and show their better performance.

This paper studies a design of a puzzle-based storage system. We developed an item retrieval algorithm for our system which has three advantages over the previous counterparts in the literature: (i) we can retrieve items from all sides of our storage system; (ii) the existence of only one empty cell in our system is sufficient to retrieve an item; and (iii) our algorithm never ends in deadlocks. The main feature of our algorithm is to prefer three moves to five moves in the process of moving the seized empty cell toward the optimal side of the requested item. The conventional view in the literature assumes that increasing the number of empty cells always reduces the number of movements required for retrieving items; however, our simulation results show that depending on the size of the puzzle and the number of the requested items, increasing empty cells might make the retrieval process more complicated.

The current paper presents an energy storage system that stores the excessive energy, provided by a hybrid system of renewable energy sources, in the form of compressed air and thermal heat. Using energy storage systems together with renewable energy sources represents a major challenge that could ensure the transition to a viable economic future and a decarbonized economy. Thermodynamic calculations are conducted to investigate the performance of such systems by using Matlab simulation tools. The results indicate the values of primary and global efficiencies for various operating scenarios for the energy storage systems which use compressed air as medium storage, and shows that these could be very effective systems, proving the possibility to supply to the final user three types of energy: electricity, heat and cold function of his needs.

With an increase in renewable energy generation in the United States, there is a growing need for more frequency regulation to ensure the stability of the electric grid. Fast ramping natural gas plants are often used for frequency regulation, but this creates emissions associated with the burning of fossil fuels. Energy storage systems (ESSs), such as batteries and flywheels, provide an alternative frequency regulation service. However, the efficiency losses of charging and discharging a storage system cause additional electrical generation requirements and associated emissions. There is not a good understanding of these indirect emissions from charging and discharging ESSs in the literature, with most sources stating that ESSs for frequency regulation have lower emissions, without quantification of these emissions. We created a model to estimate three types of emissions (CO2, NOX, and SO2) from ESSs providing frequency regulation, and compare them to emissions from a natural gas plant providing the same service. When the natural gas plant is credited for the generated electricity, storage systems have 33% to 68% lower CO2 emissions than the gas turbine, depending on the US eGRID subregion, but higher NOX and SO2 emissions. However, different plausible assumptions about the framing of the analysis can make ESSs a worse choice so the true difference depends on the nature of the substitution between storage and natural gas generation.

Cost-effective integrated storage systems are important components for the accelerated market penetration of solarthermal power plants. Besides extended utilization of the power block, the main benefits of storage systems are improved efficiency of components, and facilitated integration into the electrical grids. For parabolic trough power plants using synthetic oil as the heat transfer medium, the application of solid media sensible heat storage is an attractive option in terms of investment and maintenance costs. For commercial oil trough technology, a solid media sensible heat storage system was developed and tested. One focus of the project was the cost reduction of the heat exchanger; the second focus lies in the energetic and exergetic analysis of modular storage operation concepts, including a cost assessment of these concepts. The results show that technically there are various interesting ways to improve storage performance. However, these efforts do not improve the economical aspect. Therefore, the tube register with straight parallel tubes without additional structures to enhance heat transfer has been identified as the best option concerning manufacturing aspects and investment costs. The results of the energetic and exergetic analysis of modular storage integration and operation concepts show a significant potential for economic optimization. An increase of more than 100% in storage capacity or a reduction of more than a factor of 2 in storage size and therefore investment cost for the storage system was calculated. A complete economical analysis, including the additional costs for this concept on the solar field piping and control, still has to be performed.

Introduction: For Africans living in the United States, the extent to which stress-induced physiologic dysfunction varies by reason for immigration is unknown. Allostatic load score (ALS) is used to assess physiologic stress. ALS has biomarkers in 3 domains: cardiovascular, metabolic and immune. However, there are many ALS equations and the number of biomarkers in each domain varies. In the cardiac domain of ALS, equations use either triglyceride (TG) or high density lipoprotein (HDL). A specific problem for African descent populations is that HDL may be superior to TG as a marker of insulin resistance and cardiac risk. Objective: Our primary goal in 95 African immigrants (71% male, age 42±10, (mean±SD), range 22-62y) was to determine if ALS varied by reason for immigration. Our secondary goal was to evaluate 4 different ALS equations to determine if there was a difference in ALS performance depending on whether HDL or TG was the included biomarker. Methods and Results: For all 4 equations, the reasons for immigration from lowest to highest ALS were: family reunification, lottery for self and immediate family, marriage, asylum, work and study (Figure 1). As the first 3 reasons for immigration promoted family unity, they were grouped together (Group 1). The Africans who came for other reasons were grouped together (Group 2). Equations 1 and 2 included HDL as a biomarker. For these equations, ALS in Group 1 vs. Group 2 were: 1.7±1.3 vs. 2.8±1.7, P <0.01 and 1.4±1.2 vs. 2.3±1.7, P <0.01 resp. Equations 3 and 4 used TG. For these two equations ALS in Group 1 vs. Group 2 were: 2.2±1.6 vs. 2.9±2.0, P =0.08 and 2.1±1.4 vs. 2.9±2.0, P =0.03 resp. In Equations 1 and 2, when HDL was replaced by TG, the significant difference in ALS between groups declined. In Equations 3 and 4, when TG was replaced by HDL, the significant difference in ALS between groups increased. Conclusions: ALS varies by reason for immigration and is easier to detect in ALS equations which use HDL rather than TG.

Abstract Motivation In DNA storage systems, there are tradeoffs between writing and reading costs. Increasing the code rate of error-correcting codes may save writing cost, but it will need more sequence reads for data retrieval. There is potentially a way to improve sequencing and decoding processes in such a way that the reading cost induced by this tradeoff is reduced without increasing the writing cost. In past researches, clustering, alignment, and decoding processes were considered as separate stages but we believe that using the information from all these processes together may improve decoding performance. Actual experiments of DNA synthesis and sequencing should be performed because simulations cannot be relied on to cover all error possibilities in practical circumstances. Results For DNA storage systems using fountain code and Reed-Solomon (RS) code, we introduce several techniques to improve the decoding performance. We designed the decoding process focusing on the cooperation of key components: Hamming-distance based clustering, discarding of abnormal sequence reads, RS error correction as well as detection, and quality score-based ordering of sequences. We synthesized 513.6KB data into DNA oligo pools and sequenced this data successfully with Illumina MiSeq instrument. Compared to Erlich’s research, the proposed decoding method additionally incorporates sequence reads with minor errors which had been discarded before, and thuswas able to make use of 10.6–11.9% more sequence reads from the same sequencing environment, this resulted in 6.5–8.9% reduction in the reading cost. Channel characteristics including sequence coverage and read-length distributions are provided as well.
