The demand of parts with low weight, high material properties and relatively low cost leads to lightweight constructions. Especially hollow structures with a high stiffness and minimized weight are expected to have high potentials. In comparison to other manufacturing technologies, e.g. hydroforming or casting, characterized by their limitations of material thickness or mechanical strength, forging is a costeffective way to produce lightweight parts with excellent material properties and a balanced relation between strength and mass. Based on known flashless forging processes, a new technology to produce forged parts with hollow structures is developed at IPH — Institut fu¨r Integrierte Produktion Hannover, Germany. The hollow structure is filled by an incompressible liquid which is removed after the forming process. Maximum deformations are reached by using punches moving into the liquid.

Multi-material solutions represent a promising approach for the production of load-optimised parts. The combination of material-specific advantages of different materials in a single component allows the fulfilment of conflicting requirements e.g. high performance and low weight. Fabrication of hybrid components is challenging due to the dissimilar properties of the individual materials and requires the development of suitable manufacturing technologies. The present paper deals with the simulation-based design of a forming process for the production of a suspension control arm consisting of steel and aluminium. With the focus on material flow, two forming concepts, open-die and closed-die forging, were investigated, in order to ensure the required material distribution similar to the final part. In addition, a tool analysis was carried out to avoid thermo-mechanical overload of the tool system. It was found that the required material distribution can be achieved with both forming concepts. However, a closed-die forging concept is not suitable because of the high stresses in the forging dies exceed the tool steel’s strength.

Coconut shell is an agricultural residue, usually disposed of through open burning. Toxic gases have been emitted from the open burning phase and can therefore be detrimental to human health and the environment. Thus, to reduce the risk of pollution, researchers have developed a new technology by using agro-wastes to produce biocomposites. Coconut shell powder (CSP) is a solid nonfood waste, which can be potentially exploited to reduce the usage of synthetic fiber. Coconut shell is also low-cost and low weight material that can be used to reduce the production cost of and fuel consumption for transportation. This review has focused on the research carried out on the CSP loaded into different types of matrices, highlighting the fundamental, mechanical, physical, and thermal properties of CSP composites. This article also provides critical review of the development for CSP composite and the summary of the results presented in the literature, focusing in the properties of CSP with polymeric matrices and the application design for economical products.

Innovations create both opportunities and dilemmas. Innovations provide new and purportedly better opportunities, but—because of their newness—they are often more uncertain and potentially worse than existing options. There are new drugs, new energy sources, new foods, new manufacturing technologies, new toys and new pedagogical methods, new weapon systems, new home appliances, and many other discoveries and inventions. To use or not to use a new and promising but unfamiliar and hence uncertain innovation? That dilemma faces just about everybody. Furthermore, the paradigm of the innovation dilemma characterizes many situations even when a new technology is not actually involved. The dilemma arises from new attitudes, like individual responsibility for the global environment, or new social conceptions, like global allegiance and self-identity transcending all nation-states. These dilemmas have far-reaching implications for individuals, organizations, and society at large as they make decisions in the age of innovation. The uncritical belief in outcome optimization—“more is better, so most is best”—pervades decision-making in all domains, but this is often irresponsible when facing the uncertainties of innovation. There is a great need for practical conceptual tools for understanding and managing the dilemmas of innovation. This book offers a new direction for a wide audience. It discusses examples from many fields, including e-reading, online learning, bipolar disorder and pregnancy, disruptive technology in industry, stock markets, agricultural productivity and world hunger, military hardware, military intelligence, biological conservation, and more.

Doping heteroatoms such as nitrogen (N) and boron (B) into the framework of carbon materials is one of the most efficient methods to improve the electrical performance of carbon-based electrodes. In this study, N-doped carbon has been facilely synthesized using a ZIF-8/polydopamine precursor. The polyhedral structure of ZIF-8 and the effective surface-coating capability of dopamine enabled the formation of N-doped carbon with a hollow structure. The ZIF-8 polyhedron served as a sacrificial template for hollow structures, and dopamine participated as a donor of the nitrogen element. When compared to ZIF-8-derived carbon, the HSNC electrode showed an improved reversible capacity of approximately 1398 mAh·g−1 after 100 cycles, with excellent cycling retention at a voltage range of 0.01 to 3.0 V using a current density of 0.1 A·g−1.

Closure head forging (SA508, Gr.3 Cl.1) integrated with flange for PWR reactor pressure vessel has been developed. This is intended to enhance structural integrity of closure head resulted in elimination of ISI, by eliminating weld joint between closure head and flange in the conventional design. Manufacturing procedures have been established so that homogeneity and isotropy of the material properties can be assured in the closure head forging integrated with flange. Acceptance tensile and impact test specimens are taken and tested regarding the closure head forging integrated with flange as very thick and complex forgings. This paper describes the manufacturing technologies and material properties of the closure head forging integrated with flange.

AbstractThis paper updates the earlier account of the Forties Field detailed in Geological Society Memoir 14 (Wills 1991), and gives a brief description of the Brimmond Field, a small Eocene accumulation overlying Forties (Fig. 1).The Forties Field is located 180 km ENE of Aberdeen. It was discovered in 1970 by well 21/10-1 which encountered 119 m of oil bearing Paleocene sands at a depth of 2131 m sub-sea. A five well appraisal programme confirmed the presence of a major discovery including an extension into Block 22/6 to the southeast. Oil-in-place was estimated to be 4600 MMSTB with recoverable reserves of 1800 MM STB. The field was brought onto production in September 1975. Plateau production of 500 MBOD was reached in 1978, declining from 1981 to 77 MBOD in 1999.In September 1992 a programme of infill drilling commenced, which continues today. The earlier infill targets were identified using 3D seismic acquired in 1988. Acquisition of a further 3D survey in 1996 has allowed the infill drilling programme to continue with new seismic imaging of lithology, fluids and saturation changes. The performance of the 1997 drilling showed that high step-out and new technology wells, including multi-lateral and horizontal wells, did not deliver significantly better targets than drilling in previous years. In line with smaller targets, and in the current oil price environment, low cost technology is being developed through the 1999 drilling programme. Through Tubing Rotary Drilling (TTRD) is currently seen as the most promising way of achieving a step

The new technology of combined lateral extrusion and simultaneous shifting allows producing eccentric shafts or crankshaft-like components by cold forging. The advantage of lateral extrusion compared to an upsetting and subsequent shifting is the constant web thickness. For this, material is pushed into the forming zone during the forming process. It is expected that this will result in lower tensile stresses and thus lower damage in the crankshaft web. This paper describes the process, tooling concept and numerical simulation of the combined lateral extrusion and shifting process.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to explore the influence of low cost building materials on reduction of housing deficit in Nairobi County, Kenya.Methodology: The study adopted four theories: open innovations theory, the value theory, transformational leadership theory, and institutional theory. Methodologically, the study adopted a descriptive research design, while the population of this study was all the real estate firms registered by Kenya Property Developers Association (KPDA). Census technique was employed to collect data from all 69 real estate firms using questionnaires. Questionnaires were applied to collect primary data, where the researcher trained research assistants to aid the data collection procedure. A pilot-test was conducted as an approach to establishing both the reliability and validity assessments of the questionnaire. Statistical packages for social sciences (SPSS) was used to undertake both descriptive and inferential statistical computations. Results: The findings of the study established that the use of technology enhances the capability and capacity of construction firms to use an array of building materials. The study found that use of modern technology defined skilled labour because most organizations are leveraging technology as a basis of realizing competitive advantage. It also established that real estate firms utilize competent based human resource management firms to hire qualified personnel. In addition, it was evident that personality traits influenced adoption of new technology in the construction of low cost housing, whereas knowledge and attitudes, and skills were significantly attributed to adoption of new technology.Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: In light of the research findings, the study recommends that organizations should leverage modern technology as a basis of realizing efficiency, effectiveness, and sustainability of projects. The study likewise recommends that organizations should build capacities to enhance labour productivity. In addition, the study recommends that organizations should adopt transformational leadership approaches as a basis of enhancing performance. The study recommends the need to revise the legal framework with a view to ensure that it reflects the changing needs of the project requirements.
