A method using virtual reality and finite element techniques corporately for simulation of tower crane is presented. A training and safety assessment system based on the method is created, which can be used for training operators and assessing the structural safety for a tower crane. The system can help the enterprises using tower crane reduce the training cost and work risk. Virtual reality software Virtools and finite element analysis software ANSYS are corporately used to construct the system.

Advantages and disadvantages of present tower crane's upper structures are analyzed in this paper. According to the theory of prestressing jib, through combination design, a kind of structure is presented which can realize multiple use and greatly improve the hoisting capacity. Mechanical analysis and contrasts are done for old and new designs by finite element analysis software ALGOR. Finally, an example is given to verify the validity and feasibility of the design

After a major seismic event, structural safety inspections by qualified experts are required prior to reoccupying a building and resuming operation. Such manual inspections are generally performed by teams of two or more experts and are time consuming, labor intensive, subjective in nature, and potentially put the lives of the inspectors in danger. The authors reported previously on the system for a rapid post-earthquake safety assessment of buildings using sparse acceleration data. The proposed framework was demonstrated using simulation of a five-story steel building modeled with three-dimensional nonlinear analysis subjected to historical earthquakes. The results confirmed the potential of the proposed approach for rapid safety evaluation of buildings after seismic events. However, experimental validation on large-scale structures is required prior to field implementation. Moreover, an extension to the assessment of high-rise buildings, such as those commonly used for residences and offices in modern cities, is needed. To this end, a 1/3-scale 18-story experimental steel building tested on the shaking table at E-Defense in Japan is considered. The importance of online model updating of the linear building model used to calculate the Damage Sensitive Features (DSFs) during the operation is also discussed. Experimental results confirm the efficacy of the proposed approach for rapid post-earthquake safety evaluation for high-rise buildings. Finally, a cost-benefit analysis with respect to the number of sensors used is presented.

Welding residual stress is one of the main factors that affect the strength and life of components. In order to explore the effect on residual stress of welding line by laser shock processing, finite element analysis software ANSYS is used to simulate the welding process, to calculate the distribution of welding residual stress field. On this basis, then AYSYS/LS-DYNA is used to simulate the laser shock processing on welding line. Simulation results show that residual stress distributions of weld region, heat-affected region and matrix by laser shock processing are clearly improved, and the tensile stress of weld region effectively reduce or eliminate. The simulation results and experimental results are generally consistent, it offer reasons for parameter optimization of welding and laser shock processing by finite element analysis software.

The explicit dynamic finite element theory is applied on the collision of ships with buoys for computer simulation. Using ANSYS/LS-DYNA finite element analysis software, the numerical simulation of the collision between the ton ship and the buoy with different structures and impact points. The collision force, deformation, displacement parameters and the weak impact points of a buoy are obtained. Based on the numerical simulation results, analysis of buoys and structural collision damages in anti-collision features are discussed, and several theoretical sugestions in anti-collision for the design of buoy are provided.

According to uncertainty of the design parameters for large span truss of installing wave-maker, in order to avoid the waste of materials, the truss is analyzed based on the finite element analysis software ANSYS to find out its weaknesses and various parts of the deformation. On the premise of ensuring the intensity and stiffness, the weight of the truss is reduced by adjusting its sizes and selecting different profiles, so as to achieve the optimization of the truss of installing wave-maker.

A new experimental fluidized bed reactor was investigated and designed which has been widely utilized for fast pyrolysis under different temperatures (T=727–973 K).The stresses of the reactor cylinder are analyzed using finite element method(FEM, ANSYS Inc., U.S.A ) based on the safety assessment, and the cylinder is designed for installing scheme. The result of ANSYS analysis shows that the stress unstable positions are nearby both ends of the cylinder. The results of analysis are shown that the designing stresses are not beyond the allow able ones. So the designing parameters can possess sufficient reliability, and the design scheme can completely satisfy the strength requirement. Certainty of the stress could offered the valuable instruction for the application of the equipment on industrial scale-up.

For the high hoisting height, wide using range, tower crane is widely utilized in the architecture construction, while there are some deficiencies in the high rising architecture such as chimney, so the performance can’t exerted. By virtue of computer aided technology, the finite element static analysis of metallic structure of unconventional dedicated tower crane is conducted in this paper, and the figures of stress and displacement are achieved for the two working conditions and two structures. It is proved that the results are satisfied the requirements of stiffness and strength, and also foundation is established for the further analysis.
