Floatover Deck Installation: Case Study — Structural Efficiency of Longitudinally and Transversely-Recessed Structures

Conventional floatover deck (FOD) installation on a jacket substructure requires the top of the structure to be recessed appropriately, either in the longitudinal or transverse direction to accommodate the vessel transporting the deck. The recess direction is very important to the design of the jacket and influences the outfitting of appurtenances, the shape of the deck and the floatover concept as a whole. This study investigates the structural integrity of typical longitudinal and transverse jackets suitable for FOD installation under both inplace and installation conditions. The study also assesses the structural efficiency of the two options under various installation conditions and benchmarks their structural performance against more conventional jackets associated with lift-installed decks.

AbstractWhile scholarship suggests that improving tenure security and housing significantly reduces disaster risk at the household level within urban settings, this assertion has not been adequately tested. Tenure security can be conceived as being composed of three interrelated and overlapping forms: tenure security as determined by legal systems; de facto tenure security; and tenure security as perceived by residents. This article traces the relationship between tenure security, the quality of housing, and disaster risk on the basis of a mixed methods comparative case study of the settlements of Kawangware and Kibera in Nairobi. Although the findings suggest that owner-occupancy is associated with the structural integrity of dwellings to a greater extent than tenantship, no association was found between the length of occupancy by households and the structural integrity of the dwelling. Moreover, tenantship is not found to be closely associated with fires and flooding affecting the dwelling as extant scholarship would suggest. Formal ownership is linked with greater investment and upgrading of property with significant implications for disaster risk. Our findings highlight the complex relationship between tenure security and disaster risk in urban informal settlements and provide impetus for further investigation.

Debonding behaviors of CFRP strengthened RC beams were experimentally investigated under the influence of weak interfaces, which are induced either by defective bonding of replaced cover or expansive cracks. Shown by test results, weak interfaces impaired considerably the structural integrity of strengthening systems during loading, and easily led to CFRP debonding failure. U-strips worked effectively in preventing the integral debonding and guarantee the structural performance of flexural sheets. However, local cover delamination in the loading process and premature rupture of flexural CFRP could still take place due to the weak interface effects. Therefore, allowable tensile strain of flexural CFRP should be reduced, and more strict confinement and anchorage measures should be taken in this case.

Performance-Based Plastic Design (PBPD) is a structural analysis that can be used to review structural performance. This method is increasingly popular to be used in the earthquake-prone area. This method is based on energy method that can be applied to steel or concrete structures. Meanwhile, Indonesia has already SNI 1726:2102 to be used as a guide in designing the thrust load to review the level of structural performance. Both of these things need to be used as a reference in areas that were initially considered safe from the earthquake but based on the development of earthquake micro zonation maps, it is very possible to become potential areas that also become earthquake regions. For this reason, the case of the structure that was built in the Pekanbaru area was taken. From the analyses of structural behavior, the structure that applied PBPD has greater displacement than the structures that apply the thrust load of SNI 1726: 2012. The percentage of displacement that occurred was 8-37 %. Based on performance analysis, the structures according to PBPD shows a better level of performance to the application of SNI 1726: 2012 thrust load.

This case study describes a structural integrity assessment of a 220 kV overhead power line. The line comprises 70 pylons over a distance of approximately 30 km, predominantly in a valley location. The pylons are spaced at intervals of approximately 400 m and each pylon is approximately 32 m in height. The line was originally constructed in the 1950’s, approximately 50 years prior to the requested structural integrity assessment. This paper describes the independent assessment that was carried out. The review established site-specific safety factors at the time of original design and construction; at the time of the review (2007), accounting for the possible presence of the “Thomasstahl” steel; and in the future, at the anticipated end of pylon life (in 2012).

Partial factors are commonly based on expert judgements and on calibration to previous design formats. This inevitably results in unbalanced structural reliability for different types of construction materials, loads and limit states. Probabilistic calibration makes it possible to account for plentiful requirements on structural performance, environmental conditions, production and execution quality etc. In the light of ongoing revisions of Eurocodes and the development of National Annexes, the study overviews the methodology of probabilistic calibration, provides input data for models of basic variables and illustrates the application by a case study. It appears that the partial factors recommended in the current standards provide for a lower reliability level than that indicated in EN 1990. Different values should be considered for the partial factors for imposed, wind and snow loads, appreciating the distinct nature of uncertainties in their load effects.

The Mahavira Hall of the Jade Buddha Temple in Shanghai, China is a century-old traditional timber structure with a post-and-lintel construction. To improve the temple’s architectural layout and enhance the lintel structural integrity, the Mahavira Hall was moved 30.66 m and then elevated 1.05 m in September 2017. To assist in the structural translocation and uplift, the authors designed a monitoring system to continuously measure the relative displacement and inclination of the overall structure, individual components, and inside statues to ensure the integrity of the hall and its contents. This article presents and summarizes the priority issues and principles of monitoring the ancient Chinese timber structure. The time series of monitored data are decimated in order to minimize the fluctuation of data. The structural integrity of the Mahavira Hall was evaluated based on the inclination angle of its vital members. Finally, combined with the limit value regulated by code and the predicted early warning threshold values, which are based on extreme value theory, the effect of the translocation on the structural performance was obtained using fuzzy logic.

A vibration-based energy harvester (VEH) utilizes vibrations originated from various structures and specifically maximizes the displacement of its moving parts, using the resonance between the frequency of external vibration loads from the structure and the natural frequency of VEH to improve power production efficiency. This study presents the procedure to evaluate the structural performance and structural integrity of VEH utilized in a railway vehicle under frequency domain. First of all, a structural performance test was performed to identify the natural frequency and assess the structural response in frequency domain. Then, the static structural analysis was carried out using FE analysis to investigate the failure critical locations (FCLs) and effect of resonance. Finally, we conducted a frequency response analysis to identify the structural response and investigate the structural integrity in frequency domain. Based on these results, the authors assessed the structural performance and integrity of VEHs in two versions.

There has been increasing interest across the industry to better understand the possible long term risks associated with out of service pipelines. In Canada, the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA), Petroleum Technology Alliance of Canada (PTAC), and the National Energy Board (NEB), have undertaken multiple studies to identify and assess the threats related to pipeline abandonment. [1][2][3] The primary hazards typically identified across industry for pipeline abandonment are associated with long term corrosion degradation, potential for creation of water conduits, possible environmental impacts, and potential for pipeline collapse and associated soil subsidence. Unfortunately, little guidance is presently available to the industry for determining remaining structural capacity of a heavily corroded pipeline to establish likelihood, and possible timeline, of collapse, nor for determining possible subsidence magnitudes associated with large diameter transmission lines. This paper presents a technical case study for an assessment approximating the remaining strength of an abandoned pipeline subject to long term corrosion degradation, considering both general metal loss, and randomized pitting and perforation growth. The work presented used a combination of finite element analyses, and existing industry models for determining load bearing capacity of an abandoned pipeline under varying levels of degradation.
