Kinematics of Experimentally Generated Severe Wave Conditions and Implications for Numerical Models

An experiment was performed to measure and characterize wave kinematics in a large-scale experimental basin. The primary objective was to measure and characterize the wave kinematics of both regular waves of varying steepness and scaled irregular seas with embedded large-amplitude wave groups. The secondary objective was to provide a validation data set for wave theory and numerical simulation tool development. Measurements included free surface elevations and velocity field measurements under the free surface using particle image velocimetry (PIV). A discussion of free surface elevation data, the effect of wave steepness on the velocity profile of regular waves and an introduction to the analysis of the wave kinematics of the embedded wave groups was presented in a previous paper by the authors (OMAE2010-20240). The current paper expands on the analysis presented in the previous paper, providing a discussion of the effect of wave group composition, wave group location within irregular seas, and seaway scaling on the kinematics. This experiment is part of an ongoing effort at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) to improve predictions and measurement of ship motions in waves and assess the dynamic stability and seakeeping performance of naval ships. NSWCCD has developed a deterministic wave generation method to be used in its seakeeping basin facility. The exploration of the above factors provides a better understanding of the employed method and its effectiveness for creating wave groups. Specifically, to model realistic severe conditions that a ship may encounter. These findings, in turn, lead to the possibility of improvements to current model testing methods at NSWCCD. In addition to assessing the experimental methods employed, the experimental data set can also be used to validate and improve current numerical wave models for ship motions prediction. A comparison of the measured wave elevations and kinematics with a pseudo-spectral numerical wave model is also presented and discussed.

Analysis of wave structure interaction problems are increasingly handled by employing CFD methods such as the well known Volume-of-Fluid (VoF) method. In particular for the problem of deck impact on fixed structures with slender substructures, CFD methods have been used extensively in the last few years. For this case, the initial conditions have usually been treated as regular waves in an undisturbed wave field which may be given accurately as input. As CFD analyses become more widely available and are used for more complex problems it is also necessary to consider the problem of irregular waves in a CFD context. Irregular waves provide a closer description of the sea surface than regular waves and are also the chief source of statistical variability in the wave induced loading level. In general, it is not feasible to run a long simulation of an irregular seastate in a CFD analysis today since this would require very long simulation times and also a very large computational domain and sophisticated absorbing boundary conditions to avoid build-up of reflections in the domain. The present paper is concerned with the use of a single transient wave group to represent a large event in an irregular wave group. It is well known that the autocovariance function of the wave spectrum is proportional to the mean shape of a large wave in a Gaussian wave field. The transient nature of such a wave ensures that a relatively small wave is generated at the upwave boundary and dissipated at the downwave boundary compared with the wave in the centre of the domain. Furthermore, a transient wave may be embedded in a random background if it is believed that the random background is important for the load level. The present paper describes the method of generating transient wave groups in a CFD analysis of wave in deck impact. The evolution of transient wave groups is first studied and compared with experimental measurements in order to verify that nonlinear transient waves can be calculated accurately using the present CFD code. Vertical wave induced loads on a large deck is then investigated for different undisturbed wave velocities and deck inundations.

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic (SPH) numerical model is used to investigate wave group effects at breaking and after breaking by comparing individual waves in a group with equivalent regular waves. Regular wave break almost at the same position and with the same wave height. Meanwhile in a wave group, the wave breaks in the variant positions and with variant wave heights. These phenomena cause the breaking point to be more scattered in a wave group rather than in regular waves. Return flow due to the breaking of wave groups appears more significant and is extended to the full depth in the surf zone rather than in regular waves. Swash oscillations of the wave group in the surf zone appear irregular. Meanwhile in regular waves, swash oscillations are almost constant.

The main transport channel of the global economy is represented by shipping. Engineers and hull designers are more preoccupied in ensuring fleet safety, the proper operation of the ships, and, more recently, compliance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulatory incentives. Considerable efforts have been devoted to in-depth understanding of the hydrodynamics mechanism and prediction of ship behavior in waves. Prediction of seakeeping performances with a certain degree of accuracy is a demanding task for naval architects and researchers. In this paper, a fully numerical approach of the seakeeping performance of a KRISO (Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering, Daejeon, South Korea) container ship (KCS) container vessel is presented. Several hydrodynamic methods have been employed in order to obtain accurate results of ship hydrodynamic response in regular waves. First, an in-house code DYN (Dynamic Ship Analysis, “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati, Romania), based on linear strip theory (ST) was used. Then, a 3D fully nonlinear time-domain Boundary Element Method (BEM) was implemented, using the commercial code SHIPFLOW (FLOWTECH International AB, Gothenburg, Sweden). Finally, the commercial software NUMECA (NUMECA International, Brussels, Belgium) was used in order to solve the incompressible unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equation (RANSE) flow at ship motions in head waves. The results obtained using these methods are represented and discussed, in order to establish a methodology for estimating the ship response in regular waves with accurate results and the sensitivity of hydrodynamical models.

AbstractA three-dimensional (3D) time-domain method is developed to predict ship motions in waves. To evaluate the Froude-Krylov (F-K) forces and hydrostatic forces under the instantaneous incident wave profile, an adaptive mesh technique based on a quad-tree subdivision is adopted to generate instantaneous wet meshes for ship. For quadrilateral panels under both mean free surface and instantaneous incident wave profiles, Froude-Krylov forces and hydrostatic forces are computed by analytical exact pressure integration expressions, allowing for considerably coarse meshes without loss of accuracy. And for quadrilateral panels interacting with the wave profile, F-K and hydrostatic forces are evaluated following a quad-tree subdivision. The transient free surface Green function (TFSGF) is essential to evaluate radiation and diffraction forces based on linear theory. To reduce the numerical error due to unclear partition, a precise integration method is applied to solve the TFSGF in the partition computation time domain. Computations are carried out for a Wigley hull form and S175 container ship, and the results show good agreement with both experimental results and published results.

ObjectiveTo develop and validate a simple risk scores chart to estimate the probability of poor outcomes in patients with severe head injury (HI).DesignRetrospective.SettingLevel-1, government-funded trauma centre, India.ParticipantsPatients with severe HI admitted to the neurosurgery intensive care unit during 19 May 2010–31 December 2011 (n=946) for the model development and further, data from same centre with same inclusion criteria from 1 January 2012 to 31 July 2012 (n=284) for the external validation of the model.Outcome(s)In-hospital mortality and unfavourable outcome at 6 months.ResultsA total of 39.5% and 70.7% had in-hospital mortality and unfavourable outcome, respectively, in the development data set. The multivariable logistic regression analysis of routinely collected admission characteristics revealed that for in-hospital mortality, age (51–60, >60 years), motor score (1, 2, 4), pupillary reactivity (none), presence of hypotension, basal cistern effaced, traumatic subarachnoid haemorrhage/intraventricular haematoma and for unfavourable outcome, age (41–50, 51–60, >60 years), motor score (1–4), pupillary reactivity (none, one), unequal limb movement, presence of hypotension were the independent predictors as its 95% confidence interval (CI) of odds ratio (OR)_did not contain one. The discriminative ability (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (95% CI)) of the score chart for in-hospital mortality and 6 months outcome was excellent in the development data set (0.890 (0.867 to 912) and 0.894 (0.869 to 0.918), respectively), internal validation data set using bootstrap resampling method (0.889 (0.867 to 909) and 0.893 (0.867 to 0.915), respectively) and external validation data set (0.871 (0.825 to 916) and 0.887 (0.842 to 0.932), respectively). Calibration showed good agreement between observed outcome rates and predicted risks in development and external validation data set (p>0.05).ConclusionFor clinical decision making, we can use of these score charts in predicting outcomes in new patients with severe HI in India and similar settings.

AbstractOvarian cancer (OV) is a common type of carcinoma in females. Many studies have reported that ferroptosis is associated with the prognosis of OV patients. However, the mechanism by which this occurs is not well understood. We utilized Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) to identify ferroptosis-related genes in OV. In the present study, we applied Cox regression analysis to select hub genes and used the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator to construct a prognosis prediction model with mRNA expression profiles and clinical data from TCGA. A series of analyses for this signature was performed in TCGA. We then verified the identified signature using International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) data. After a series of analyses, we identified six hub genes (DNAJB6, RB1, VIMP/ SELENOS, STEAP3, BACH1, and ALOX12) that were then used to construct a model using a training data set. The model was then tested using a validation data set and was found to have high sensitivity and specificity. The identified ferroptosis-related hub genes might play a critical role in the mechanism of OV development. The gene signature we identified may be useful for future clinical applications.

Reliable predictions of fuel consumption are critical in the eastern United States (US), where prescribed burning is frequently applied to forests and air quality is of increasing concern. CONSUME and the First Order Fire Effects Model (FOFEM), predictive models developed to estimate fuel consumption and emissions from wildland fires, have not been systematically evaluated for application in the eastern US using the same validation data set. In this study, we compiled a fuel consumption data set from 54 operational prescribed fires (43 pine and 11 mixed hardwood sites) to assess each model’s uncertainties and application limits. Regions of indifference between measured and predicted values by fuel category and forest type represent the potential error that modelers could incur in estimating fuel consumption by category. Overall, FOFEM predictions have narrower regions of indifference than CONSUME and suggest better correspondence between measured and predicted consumption. However, both models offer reliable predictions of live fuel (shrubs and herbaceous vegetation) and 1 h fine fuels. Results suggest that CONSUME and FOFEM can be improved in their predictive capability for woody fuel, litter, and duff consumption for eastern US forests. Because of their high biomass and potential smoke management problems, refining estimates of litter and duff consumption is of particular importance.

Abstract In 1996, the NASEM beef cattle committee developed and published an equation to estimate cow feed intake using results from studies conducted or published between 1979 and 1993 (Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle). The same equation was recommended for use in the most recent version of this publication (2016). The equation is sensitive to cow weight, diet digestibility and milk yield. Our objective was to validate the accuracy of this equation using more recent published and unpublished data. Criteria for inclusion in the validation data set included projects conducted or published within the last ten years, direct measurement of forage intake, adequate protein supply, and pen feeding (no tie stall or metabolism crate data). The validation data set included 29 treatment means for gestating cows and 26 treatment means for lactating cows. Means for the gestating cow data set was 11.4 ± 1.9 kg DMI, 599 ± 77 kg BW, 1.24 ± 0.14 Mcal/kg NEm per kg of feed and lactating cow data set was 14.5 ± 2.0 kg DMI, 532 ± 116.3 kg BW, and 1.26 ± 0.24 Mcal NEm per kg feed, respectively. Non intercept models were used to determine equation accuracy in predicting validation data set DMI. The slope for linear bias in the NASEM gestation equation did not differ from 1 (P = 0.07) with a 3.5% positive bias. However, when the NASEM equation was used to predict DMI in lactating cows, the slope for linear bias significantly differed from 1 (P < 0.001) with a downward bias of 13.7%. Therefore, a new multiple regression equation was developed from the validation data set: DMI= (-4.336 + (0.086427 (BW^.75) + 0.3 (Milk yield)+6.005785(NEm)), (R-squared=0.84). The NASEM equation for gestating beef cows was reasonably accurate while the lactation equation underestimated feed intake.
