This paper is the natural follow-up of the paper [6] also presented at OMAE 2012 by the authors. In [6] the authors describe various linear reconstruction methods for short-crested seas. Each of them is based on a specific analysis technique for the spectral components obtained when applying a 3D Fourier Transform to a series of snap shots of the ocean surface. The efficiency and the accuracy of each method is investigated in [6] for the reconstruction of synthetic images of linear short-crested wave fields. The purpose of the second part of the paper is to test the most accurate methods described in [6] for the prediction of synthetic linear waves. The predicted wave fields are calculated within a specific area in space and time called the prediction zone, which is determined theoretically. The method for determining the theoretical prediction zone is also described in this part of the paper.

Automatic Transmission (AT) system is efficient in the aspects of vehicle safety, comfort, reliability and driving performance. The objectives of this paper are to collect the oil samples from AT systems of engine bus according to manufacturer's recommendations and analyse collected oil samples using oil analysis technique. The sample transmission fluid which was taken from the AT gearbox has been experimentally analyzed. The oil samples were taken with an interval of 5,000km, 30,000km, 50,000km, 80,000km, 180,000km and 300,000km for AT bus operation. These samples then have been analyzed by comparing between new and used transmission fluid using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Oil analysis by FTIR is a form of Predictive Maintenance (PdM) to avoid major failure in machine elements. Most machine elements are not easily accessible in the transmission system. Having a reliable technique would avoid the needs to open the components unnecessarily, hence, help to prevent catastrophic failure which are very costly, and ease of regular monitoring. In order to identify the major failures of automatic gearbox, forecasts can be made regarding the lube transmission fluid analysis test. By using this test, the minor problems can be determined before they become major failures. At the end of this research, the wear particles profile for interval mileage of AT system was obtained. Keywords: Wear, Automatic Transmission (AT), Transmission fluid, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Oil analysis.

Compressive sensing has emerged as an area that opens new perspectives in signal acquisition and processing. It appears as an alternative to the traditional sampling theory, endeavoring to reduce the required number of samples for successful signal reconstruction. In practice, compressive sensing aims to provide saving in sensing resources, transmission, and storage capacities and to facilitate signal processing in the circumstances when certain data are unavailable. To that end, compressive sensing relies on the mathematical algorithms solving the problem of data reconstruction from a greatly reduced number of measurements by exploring the properties of sparsity and incoherence. Therefore, this concept includes the optimization procedures aiming to provide the sparsest solution in a suitable representation domain. This work, therefore, offers a survey of the compressive sensing idea and prerequisites, together with the commonly used reconstruction methods. Moreover, the compressive sensing problem formulation is considered in signal processing applications assuming some of the commonly used transformation domains, namely, the Fourier transform domain, the polynomial Fourier transform domain, Hermite transform domain, and combined time-frequency domain.

A fast and robust method for T1 estimation in MRI is the so-called variable flip angle technique. We introduce a novel family of T1 reconstruction methods from data acquired with various flip angles and propose a family member which combines the robustness of a nonlinear- with the computational advantages of a linear reconstruction. The constructed family contains the most common approaches for T1 estimation, namely a linear and a nonlinear approach. A general sensitivity analysis for arbitrary members of the family is established. Advantages of the optimized reconstruction are demonstrated on phantom- as well as real data, showing improvements of up to 24% as compared with the linear method. As a further means to stabilize T1 estimation, spatial stabilization methods are compared. We demonstrate on phantom and on real data that improved results can be obtained if not only T1 but also a second unknown M0 in the reconstruction is stabilized.

Abstract. A numerical model for long-term simulation of gravity surface waves is described. The model is designed as a component of a coupled Wave Boundary Layer/Sea Waves model, for investigation of small-scale dynamic and thermodynamic interactions between the ocean and atmosphere. Statistical properties of nonlinear wave fields are investigated on a basis of direct hydrodynamical modeling of 1-D potential periodic surface waves. The method is based on a nonstationary conformal surface-following coordinate transformation; this approach reduces the principal equations of potential waves to two simple evolutionary equations for the elevation and the velocity potential on the surface. The numerical scheme is based on a Fourier transform method. High accuracy was confirmed by validation of the nonstationary model against known solutions, and by comparison between the results obtained with different resolutions in the horizontal. The scheme allows reproduction of the propagation of steep Stokes waves for thousands of periods with very high accuracy. The method here developed is applied to simulation of the evolution of wave fields with large number of modes for many periods of dominant waves. The statistical characteristics of nonlinear wave fields for waves of different steepness were investigated: spectra, curtosis and skewness, dispersion relation, life time. The prime result is that wave field may be presented as a superposition of linear waves is valid only for small amplitudes. It is shown as well, that nonlinear wave fields are rather a superposition of Stokes waves not linear waves. This study aimed to identify difficulties diabetic patients face during treatment in controlling the disease. A total of 24 diabetic patients, attended in the Nurse Educational Center for Adults and Elders in 2003, participated in the study. The data was collected individually, through a written report guided by a question previously elaborated, on a pre-scheduled date. The Content Analysis technique was used in the data analysis. The results showed several difficulties related to the treatment follow up: rejection and denial of the patient's condition, suffering and revolt due to restrictions imposed by the diet, physical activity and medication. It is possible to infer that the focus of the education approach should not be restricted to the transmission of knowledge; it should also include emotional, social and cultural aspects that also influence in the treatment follow up.

A digitization of the TEM pictures of fluorine-intercalated graphite fibers has been used to carry out quantitative measurements of the defect structure of this material. Emphasis is given to both the computer analysis technique and to the characterization of the defects. The amount of intercalation-induced disorder increases with increasing fluorine concentration. The fast Fourier transform of the digitized TEM image exhibits two diffuse spots, corresponding to the c-axis repeat distance of the intercalation compound. The length and width of the spots are a measure of the out-of-plane and in-plane disorder present in the fibers. From the fast Fourier transform, the distribution of interlayer repeat distances and the fraction of unintercalated graphite regions throughout the material is obtained. By selecting a small range of repeat distances and carrying out an inverse fast Fourier transform, the spatial distribution of material with a given repeat distance is determined. Regions with the same repeat distance are found to form islands. This particular feature of fluorine graphite intercalation compounds, as well as the nature of the microscopic defects and the staging behavior of fluorine-intercalated graphite fibers, are discussed in connection with the dual covalent and ionic nature of the carbon-fluorine bond in fluorine-intercalated graphite.
