Response Surface Models for Analyzing Planing Hull Motions in a Vertical Plane

A non-linear mathematical model, Planing Hull Motion Program (PHMP) has been developed based on strip theory to predict the heave and pitch motions of planing hull at high speed in head seas. PHMP has been validated against published model test data. For various combinations of design parameters, PHMP can predict the heave and pitch motions and bow and center of gravity accelerations with reasonable accuracy at planing and semi-planing speeds. This paper illustrates an application of modern statistical design of experiment (DOE) methodology to develop simple surrogate models to assess planing hull motions in a vertical plane (surge, heave and pitch) in calm water and in head seas. Responses for running attitude (sinkage and trim) in calm water, and for heave and pitch motions and bow and center of gravity accelerations in head seas were obtained from PHMP based on a multifactor uniform design scheme. Regression surrogate models were developed for both calm water and in head seas for each of the relevant responses. Results showed that the simple one line regression models provided adequate fit to the generated responses and provided valuable insights into the behaviour of planing hull motions in a vertical plane. The simple surrogate models can be a quick and useful tool for the designers during the preliminary design stages.

Further to the studies presented by Sayeed et al. (OMAE2014-23489), response surface models have been improved by including the effects of sinkage and trim to the vertical plane motions of planing hull in head sea. This was achieved by including longitudinal center of gravity (LCG) as an additional factor to the existing model and change in LCG eventually incorporated the effects of sinkage and trim. The validated non-linear mathematical model, Planing Hull Motion Program (PHMP) can predict the heave and pitch motions and bow and center of gravity accelerations with reasonable accuracy at planing and semi-planing speeds. This paper again illustrates an application of modern statistical design of experiment (DOE) methodology to develop response surface models to assess planing hull motions in a vertical plane in head seas. Power-augmented-ram vehicles represent novel air-assisted marine craft that can be used for high-speed amphibious transportation of heavy cargo. These vehicles rely on combined hydrodynamic and aerodynamic support that is also augmented by front air-based propulsors. Dynamic models for these craft in the presence of wind gusts and surface waves are needed for confident design of these vehicles, including motion control systems. This study addresses 3-DOF vertical-plane dynamics. The models for unsteady forces are based on the aerodynamic extreme-ground-effect theory and hydrodynamic added-mass strip theory. Modeling of the vehicle motions are carried out for cases of head and following wind gusts and waves of low and high amplitudes. Simulation results can be used for determining amplitudes of the vehicle responses, peak accelerations, and forward speed degradation.

The prediction of planing hull motions and accelerations in a seaway is of paramount importance to the design of high-speed craft to ensure comfort and, in extreme cases, the survivability of passengers and crew. The traditional approaches to predicting the motions and accelerations of a displacement vessel generally are not applicable, because the non-linear effects are more significant on planing hulls than displacement ships. No standard practice for predicting motions or accelerations of planing hulls currently exists, nor does a nonlinear model of the hydrodynamic forces that can be derived by simulation. In this study, captive and virtual planar motion mechanism (VPMM) simulations, using an Unsteady RANSE finite volume solver with volume of fluid approach, are performed on the Generic Prismatic Planing Hull (GPPH) to calculate the linearized added mass, damping, and restoring coefficients in heave and pitch. The linearized added mass and damping coefficients are compared to a simplified theory developed by Faltinsen [6], which combines the method of Savitsky [12] and 2D+t strip theory. The non-linearities in all coefficients will be investigated with respect to both motion amplitude and frequency. Nonlinear contributions to the force response are discussed through comparison of the force response predicted by the linear model and force response measured during simulation. Components of the planing hull dynamics that contribute to nonlinearities in the force response are isolated and discussed.

Reducing vertical motions of high-speed planing hulls in rough water is one of the most important factors that help a boat to become more operable, and will benefit the structure of the boat and the crew on board. In the recent decade, stepped planing hulls have been investigated with emphasis on their better performance in calm water than that of nonstepped planing hulls. However, there are still doubts about their performance in rough water. In this study, we investigate this problem by providing numerical simulations for motions of a double-stepped and a non-stepped planing hull in a vertical plane when they encounter head waves. The problem will be solved using the finite volume method and volume of fluid method. To this end, a numerical computational fluid dynamics code (STARCCM1) has been used. Accuracy of the numerical simulations is evaluated by comparing their outcome with available experimental data. The dynamic response of the investigated hulls has been numerically modeled for two different wave lengths, one of which is smaller than the boat length and the other which is larger than the boat length. Using the numerical simulations, heave and pitch motions as well as vertical acceleration are found. It has been found that at wave lengths larger than the boat length, heave amplitude decreases by 10–40%when two steps are added to the bottom of a vessel. It has also been observed that pitch of a planing hull is reduced by 18–32% in the presence of the two steps on its bottom. Finally, it has been observed that for wave lengths larger than the boat length, the maximum vertical acceleration decreases by a gravitational acceleration of about .2–.7.

A number of commercial applications have been proposed for rigid sidewall surface effect craft. The transport of crews to offshore operations is an application which is well-suited to the immediate use of moderately sized craft of this type. Because the crews are paid while they are in transit, high speeds are required to minimize the total transportation costs. The characteristics and performance of rigid sidewall surface effect craft suitable for crew transport operations are developed. The major design parameters studied include pay-load, total power, and machinery type. Performance estimates are made for operations in both calm water and waves. An economic model is developed to simulate crewboat operations. Cost estimates are based on current technology and price levels. The total unit transportation cost is used as the economic criterion in the determination of the relative merit of various craft. For the purpose of comparison the characteristics and costs of planing hull crewboats for the same mission are developed. It is concluded that rigid sidewall surface effect craft have the potential of being economically superior to planing boats for crew transport operations.

This paper presents CFD to study the hydrodynamic performance for the high-speed, multi-hull Catamaran advancing in calm water. It uses inhouse computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code to solve RANS equation coupled with six degrees of freedom solid body motion equations. RANS equations are solved by finite difference method and PISO arithmetic. Computations have been made using structured grid with overset technology. Turbulence models used the anisotropic two equations Shear Stress Transport (SST) k-ω model. Single phase level set was used for free surface simulation. A good agreement on the resistance prediction between CFD and experimental fluid dynamics (EFD) has been observed (on the resistance prediction of about 4.0%). Differences between CFD and EFD have been seen for the 3 degrees of freedom (3DOF) motion, whereas larger discrepancy is observed for the sinkage and trim estimation (about 8.0%).

There is an increasing interest in developing direct calculation methods and procedures for determining extreme wave loads on ship girders (e.g. ISSC, 2000 [1]). Ships experiencing bottom and bow flare slamming have heightened the need for computational tools suitable to accurately predict motion and structural responses. The associated nonlinear impact problem is complicated by the complex free surface and body boundary conditions. This paper examines a “blended” linear–nonlinear method by which extreme loads due to bottom impact and flare slamming can be determined. Using a high-speed container ship as an example, comparisons of motions, shear and bending moments, and pressures are made in head and oblique bow-quartering waves. The time-domain computer program used in the comparison is based upon partially nonlinear models. The program, NSHIPMO, is an blended strip theory method using “impact” stations over the forward part of the ship and partially nonlinear stations over the rest. Body exact hydrostatics and Froude-Krylov excitation are used over the entire hull. The impact theory of Troesch and Kang [2] is employed to estimate the sectional nonlinear impact forces acting upon the specified nonlinear sections, while the linear theory of Salvesen et al. (STF) [3] is used to blend the remainder of the hydrodynamic forces, that is the radiation and diffraction components. Results from the simulation are presented with discussions of accuracy and time of computation. Several issues associated with the blended nonlinear time-domain simulation are presented, including modeling issues related to directional yaw-sway control and a vertical plane dynamic instability in long waves that has not previously been recognized.

The present paper investigates the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics of the H-rotor Darrieus vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) combined with very promising energy conversion and steering technology; a fixed guide-vanes. The main scope of the current work is to enhance the aerodynamic performance and assess the noise production accomplished with such enhancement. The studies are carried out in two phases; the first phase is a parametric 2D CFD simulation employing the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) approach to optimize the design parameters of the guide-vanes. The second phase is a 3D CFD simulation of the full turbine using a higher-order numerical scheme and a hybrid RANS/LES (DDES) method. The guide-vanes show a superior power augmentation, about 42% increase in the power coefficient at λ = 2.75, with a slightly noisy operation and completely change the signal directivity. A remarkable difference in power coefficient is observed between 2D and 3D models at the high-speed ratios stems from the 3D effect. As a result, a 3D simulation of the capped Darrieus turbine is carried out, and then a noise assessment of such configuration is assessed. The results show a 20% increase in power coefficient by using the cap, without significant change in the noise signal.

AbstractHigh-speed single-mode fiber-optic communication systems have been presented based on various hybrid multiplexing schemes. Refractive index step and silica-doped germanium percentage parameters are also preserved during their technological boundaries of attention. It is noticed that the connect design parameters suffer more nonlinearity with the number of connects. Two different propagation techniques have been used to investigate the transmitted data rates as a criterion to enhance system performance. The first technique is soliton propagation, where the control parameters lead to equilibrium between the pulse spreading due to dispersion and the pulse shrinking because of nonlinearity. The second technique is the MTDM technique where the parameters are adjusted to lead to minimum dispersion. Two cases are investigated: no dispersion cancellation and dispersion cancellation. The investigations are conducted over an enormous range of the set of control parameters. Thermal effects are considered through three basic quantities, namely the transmission data rates, the dispersion characteristics, and the spectral losses.

The present work focuses on the aerodynamic problems resulting from a high-speed train (HST) passing through a tunnel. Numerical simulations were employed to obtain the numerical results, and they were verified by a moving-model test. Two responses, [Formula: see text] (coefficient of the peak-to-peak pressure of a single fluctuation) and[Formula: see text] (pressure value of micro-pressure wave), were studied with regard to the three building parameters of the portal-hat buffer structure of the tunnel entrance and exit. The MOPSO (multi-objective particle swarm optimization) method was employed to solve the optimization problem in order to find the minimum [Formula: see text] and[Formula: see text]. Results showed that the effects of the three design parameters on [Formula: see text] were not monotonous, and the influences of[Formula: see text] (the oblique angle of the portal) and [Formula: see text] (the height of the hat structure) were more significant than that of[Formula: see text] (the angle between the vertical line of the portal and the hat). Monotonically decreasing responses were found in [Formula: see text] for [Formula: see text] and[Formula: see text]. The Pareto front of [Formula: see text] and[Formula: see text]was obtained. The ideal single-objective optimums for each response located at the ends of the Pareto front had values of 1.0560 for [Formula: see text] and 101.8 Pa for[Formula: see text].
